I have the WordPress Creator Plan.

    – Activity Pub
    – Akismet
    – BP Auto Group Join
    – BP MPO Activity Filter
    – BP Profile as Homepage
    – BuddyPress
    – BuddyPress Username Changer
    – BuddyPress Xprofile Custom Field Types
    – Crowdsignal Forms
    – Crownsignal Polls & Ratings

    – Page Optimize
    – rtMedia for WordPress
    – WordPress.com Editing Toolkit
    – WP Headers And Footers WP User Login Notifier

I have disabled Youzify and BuddyPress Xprofile Custom Field Types to see if they made the Member Types possible to create but no.

I can confirm JetPack Lazy Loading Images is what causes this error most of the time.

Before diving into technical or feature suggestions since as a developer I’m automatically wired to go via that route, I thought about asking non-technical people about the product, BuddyPress, itself.

I recently participated in the WordCamp US and had the chance of talking to a few people, besides conversations I had online (Slack, etc). I think the overall feedback I gathered is that BuddyPress needs to find its product-market fit.

    ## Product-market Fit

The overall argument is that BuddyPress made sense when it was created because organizations needed a unique social network. Nowadays this is easily solvable with other tools that weren’t available at the time like Slack, Discord, Telegram, Facebook Groups, etc.

It’s much easier now to create social communities/networks using those tools than using BuddyPress. So as a project, we are not only competing against other open source projects but also with big companies which provide a solution to this problem in a much better way.

So far, all the conversation I’ve read about this issue sort of understands this new reality but the solutions presented miss this important point. So finding a new “place” for BuddyPress in this new scenario might actually be the most important thing we can do and that will define how we spend our resources going forward.

    ## BuddyPress’ problems

    ### Complexity

Before I became a BuddyPress contributor, I used to build small communities for clients. One of the first things I noticed about this niche was that all communities were the same but different. There was always a small tweak or a small feature on top of an existing component needed. BuddyPress was perfect for business. Clients didn’t know how to do it, so they hired me to build or extend it for them.

Even to this day, I still think BuddyPress suffers from this “problem”. If you are not a developer, BP is too hard to change. In BuddyPress’ marketing, it sells itself as flexible software, which is, but only if you are a developer extending or building something on top of it. Not to the regular users that install or try to use it.

I think this is an area where other tools thrive in comparison. People don’t usually build social networks with BuddyPress because it is open source. That also includes WordPress. They use WordPress because it is easy, a good solution for a problem at hand: “how do I make my own dam website?”.

    Quoting feedback I got recently:

Every good product is a tool that helps people execute their creative vision, saves them time on boring tasks, or entertains in some way.

On top of that, BuddyPress is still considered expensive to many, be that due to the need to hire developers, to buy themes and plugins to accomplish their creative vision.

    ### Feature Set

I think BuddyPress has a strong foundation of features to create a social community. But as mentioned before, users are trying to execute this creative vision, so there is always something more needed.

This is an area where BuddyPress lacks as a project and in extensions (plugins that add features to BuddyPress) as well.

The most emblematic examples are the Follow Feature and the Media component. The first one because it is so basic in the land of social networks. And the latter in the lands of Instagram and photo apps. But the core BuddyPress plugin lacks both.

On top of that, features/components are pretty hard to integrate or extend as mentioned. Whereas other tools, provide an almost seamless experience, a rich set of features in a Jetpack-like style where you only need the click of a button to get something working and showing in the default theme.

    ### Conservatism

Here speaking as a contributor and observer of both WordPress and BuddyPress.

BuddyPress is still too conservative when it comes to changes or new features, however small they are. There seems to be a philosophy or approach that it’s practiced not against change but I’d argue that it is an almost “orthodoxical” concern to changes and new features which in my opinion is impeding the project to evolve.

A recent example was the introduction of PHPCS support which to me it would be considered a no-brainer but that it took more time to convince than I anticipated or expected.

And this is also an overall theme with BuddyPress. I see a willingness of the project to experiment and a desire to evolve but we still move at a very slow pace (even in the heyday of the project).

There is a “desire” to change and evolve but over years I also see a hesitation which “drags” the project a little bit.

    ### Low number of contributors

BuddyPress has been suffering from a low number of contributors in recent years. The reasons for that could be varied. It is also not clear if that’s actually a big problem for the project. I’d argue that it is not that big.

But it is clear that identifying what’s turning possible contributors away is a very good first step. And what we can do to revert that.

    ## Finally, some suggestions for the project

    ### Decide on a product market fit

This should have a high priority. Whatever we decide here will dictate how resources will be spent. What features will be built. What areas will have the most attention. IMO, this might be the most consequential decision for the future of the project.

    ### Improve the feature set

As mentioned previously, basic features of a social network are still missing in BuddyPress. Privacy, social networking, and following features are all missing. In the past, the argument I’ve always heard/read was that those features were better off served by plugins. Whereas users would be more likely to expect them inside the core plugin.

So I think BuddyPress needs a more complete set of social networking features. And that those features should be more integrated with each other and other parts of the site.

    h3. Improve the project’s marketing

I think we need to do a better job of marketing what we offer. Not only look and feel but also of presenting information to the user.

That’s it! Not a lot of suggestions but I’m purposefully not adding technical suggestions to the project because I feel this is secondary. As long as we do not get into a new product market fit, we might not be addressing the real issue of the project.

    =)

    Hey,

thank you for the prompt reply!

    1) we are using the BP Nouveau template
    2) no errors in the inspector
    3) no errors in the Network – AJAX – Response

As I did the upgrade to BuddyPress v7.0, I am fairly positive that was the one change that triggered the member directory getting “stuck” – and with it the Buddypress Widget, which we (used to) use prominently.

However, we did several upgrades all around WP 5.6 (we document everything). Here is an excerpt of our Change Log:

    12 DEC 2020 – Saturday
☠ [08:40 UTC – @kerrie ] Filed a support request / bug inquiry here regarding the Buddypress membership / widget bug
☠ [07:45 UTC – @scaffiesadmin ] Replaced the Buddypress “Recently Online” widget with the GD “Currently Online” widget (much fewer displayed) on the newspaper, and added the “Find New Friends” widget, until the Buddypress widget has been fixed (member list does not update, it is a bigger issue than just the widget displaying it). Sadly, with Buddypress updates something goes wrong regularly – but it is usually fixed quickly.
    11 DEC 2020 – Friday
☠ [12:30 UTC – @kerrie ] The Buddypress “Recently Online” widget on the newspaper seems to have stopped working. Must be connected to the v7.0 upgrade hours earlier (not that there is a choice to upgrade or not, really — security issues are also always fixed with those).
☠ [01:40 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated Advanced Editor Tools (previously TinyMCE Advanced) to v5.6.0
    ☠ [01:35 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated WordPress to v5.6 – ‘Simone’ … “Code is Poetry”
    ☠ [01:34 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated Autoptimize to v2.8.0
☠ [01:33 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated BP Better Messages (Premium) to v1.9.7.60 (no public change log) – “other bugfixes and improvements”
    ☠ [01:32 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated Buddypress to v7.0 – “a major BuddyPress feature release” .. named “Filippi“
    ☠ [01:31 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated EU Cookie Law to v3.1.6
☠ [01:30 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated GP Premium (GeneratePress theme plug-ins) to v1.12.3 (no public change log)
    ☠ [01:29 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated Jetpack to v9.2.1

    ☠ [01:27 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated Newsletter to v7.0.0
☠ [01:26 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated Paid Memberships Pro – Gift Levels v0.3 (no public change log)
☠ [01:25 UTC – @kerrie ] Updated UpdraftPlus Premium to v2.16.42.24 (no public change log)
    07 DEC 2020 – Monday
    ☠ [22:46 UTC – @scaffiesadmin ] Updated WP Maintenance Mode to v2.3.0
☠ [22:45 UTC – @scaffiesadmin ] Updated BP Better Messages (Premium) to v1.9.7.59 (no public change log) – PM Pro incompatibility fix (affected Scaffies)

Turning off the Lazy Load functionality actually worked for me too! Thanks @eduardof

I was using the functionality on one of my clients’ site via the JetPack plugin which can be turned off from [your-site-url]/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack#/performance

    Hi again,

I have to apologise to all.

The captcha ‘problem’was caused by Jetpack plugin, not by BuddyPress.

As far as the second problem goes, I removed the tab from the menu and now all is good.

    Stay safe!

…..how to show the problem is resolved? …. 🙂

    Hi Everyone,

Im thinking of installing Jetpack to take advantage of the CDN (for images) built in.
Is the Jetpack plugin recommended companion for Buddypress?

I solved this problem like this.
In the WP Admin go to Jetpack / performance and dastive the following function: “Enable slow loading of images” Never leave this function disabled.

If it had already been resolved, I hope it will be valid for other people.

One of your other plugins or settings is redirecting to the login page to wordpress.com

    https://wordpress.com/log-in?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.com%2Fwp-login.php%3Faction%3Djetpack-sso%26site_id%3D174597912%26sso_nonce%3Dplltnhijkxdjtkh3ckbz

You’ll need to disable other plugins or check their settings to find which is doing this.

    Hi there,

I have started building wp community using BP.

I created a test account using the BP register function. When I try and login it redirects me to:
    https://wordpress.com/log-in?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.com%2Fwp-login.php%3Faction%3Djetpack-sso%26site_id%3D174275720%26sso_nonce%3Dtzrqdu6inkxwmhwn0upe

Is there some code I need to configure to get to redirect to home page or activity page? I downloaded and installed the redirect plugin for roles but doesn’t seem to work either.

I assume there is a line of code overriding this but not sure where to find.

    Thanks in advance

    Ben

    Howdy, BuddyPress friends!

I have been working on a project for fun and have been enjoying the laying out of items and adding plugin functionality a bit much here lately. So much so, in fact, that I put the testing phase on the back shelf for a bit.

When I was attempting to request membership from a test account to a private group that my admin account was the creator of, I ran into an issue: I can get to the request page (/groups/test-group/request-membership/?_wpnonce=47febc75fe) by clicking the link to do so and then am presented with a textarea for request comments, however when I submit the form (with or without comments) I am taken back to the group’s main page (/groups/test-group/) and am presented with “There was an error sending your group membership request. Please try again.” The request does not come through (not in BP’s notifications, e-mail, pending requests, etc.) at all.

At first this was a minor irritation because I could go to the group as the admin and invite the test account to join the group. There I am presented with a checkbox for my test account’s name, as well as a submit button; however when clicking on the checkbox, the form instantly submits without ever sending an invite. I even attempted to modify the live source to set the field to checked, attempted to submit, and received a success message stating my invite was sent, but of course it never was.

I have checked the list of plugins I have on my site, disabled a few I didn’t necessarily need, and have checked each of the remaining to see if there’s any sort of conflict between plugins affecting groups, but to no avail. This functionality is key to the use of groups for my project, so I would sincerely appreciate any advice from more knowledgeable members of the BP community.

Some support information, including a list of active plugins, can be found below. Please note that any plugin with ** beside it came bundled with the theme.

Yes I’m afraid Jetpack is a bit notorious in not fixing bugs caused in BuddyPress, for BP sites it’s best avoided in my experience.

After doing some research I found another article with the same error, it was jetpack lazy load causing the issue. When enabled it doesn’t show profile picture preview when prompted to crop but when disabled it fixes it right away. Thank you again

    Thanks for the tip!
I finally found the solution to the problem. Follow these steps: In admin backend, go to JetPack settings > performance and deselect “lazy loading option for images”. And now the cropping works – Please enjoy.

@samyliu thank you so much for posting this. I was not able to crop the uploaded Avatar file for my buddy press groups. I would upload a jpg file and it was be the size of a pin head.

I went in to Jetpack plugin settings and turned off load lazy images and it fixed it for me to be able to upload and crop the image.

Many questions about issue with updating group Avatar. I discover something and hope this will stop you from starching your head.

I found that when Jetpack Lazy image is activate, group avatar/photo cannot be shown and cannot crop image at all. Turned off Jetpack Lazy image option, crop image works alright, but upload always error.

I finally de-activate JetPack to be able to update my group Avatar.

I am having the same issue that just started recently. Our site is still in development so only Beta testing comments.

NOTE: When I first add a comment it ‘nests’ and looks fine in the comment hierarchy also showing ‘Comments (1)’. When I refresh the page the comment is moved to the top of the activity feed and becomes it’s own post. The original post commented on shows ‘Comments (0).

I’ve been looking all around the BP support topics and tried the following troubleshooting:
    • Activated a separate theme clean theme (Twenty Sixteen), same issue.
    • Deactivated JetPack which had caused issues with BP previously, same issue.
    • Checked Settings > Discussion > Enable threaded (nested) comments, deactivate and reactivated.
    • Found these two discussions but wasn’t able to fix. https://buddypress.org/support/topic/improve-comments-in-activity-stream/ & Try database reset? https://buddypress.org/support/topic/replies-disappear-when-i-try-to-reply-on-activity-stream-page/page/2/#post-95758
    • There is reference that this may be a corrupt database but not sure how to even start testing or resolving that.

    Thank all for any help!
