    I am setting up a new site for families, and we would like to setup the site so that each user account represents a family. To do this we are thinking that we would like to add a new Xprofile Field Group to the user profile for each family member (Parent #1, Parent #2, Child #1, Child #2, etc.). However, when we are displaying the profile on the front end, we would like to replace the Profile Group Name with the value of a specific field from that group (i.e. ‘Name’).

    I have added a filter to our functions.php file to accomplish this:

    add_filter( 'bp_get_the_profile_group_name', 'child_update_profile_group_name' );
    function child_update_profile_group_name( $name ) {
    	global $group;
    	//echo '<pre>' . print_r($group, true) . '</pre>';
    	if ( $group->fields[0]->name == 'Name' ) {
    		$name = $group->fields[0]->data->value;
    	}
    	return $name;
    }

    I will admit that this is sort of a hack. I have also noticed that the bp_get_the_profile_group_name filter is not used on the profile group tabs when the user is editing their profile. I am sure there are other areas where the group name is being displayed that are not filtered that I haven’t found yet.

    Does anyone have any suggestions for a better filter or function to use to help us replace the profile group name when displayed on the front end?

    When I search for editing profile template, it seems like the file structure might have changed since some of those answers were written. Where do I go to edit the template for the user when I go to sitename.com/members/user.

    Right now it shows: http://cl.ly/image/270b440B2G3x

    I know how to display some profile fields if I can find the right page to edit then I wanted to do some styling to divide thing into two columns.

    Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Hello together,

    I am using WordPress 3.8.1 with BuddyPress 1.9.2 as a plugin.
    Have a problem and don’t know, howto solve it. I need a custom profile field in the extended profile, that can see all users, but only an admin can edit.

    Can anyone recommend me a plugin or another workaround?

    Thanks for help,

    Okay, so first off I’m new to the WordPress platform, as I’ve been using Joomla for the past 7+ years. But anyway, I am building a site for an Ambulance service and we are using the extended profile fields in order to store some additional information such as certifications, refreshers, immunizations, etc. With this, I’ve created an officer role in WP and somehow need to need to give this role the same access as a site admin in this case for viewing the extended profile, as well as editing it, but I don’t want to make the users an actual site admin and have all the back-end access.

    Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this? I’ve seen multiple posts on things similar, but nothing quite the same.

    The desired end result is to have those that are a member of the WP role officers be able to view and edit all the extended profile fields for any user on the site.

    The field is not hidden.
    It doesn’t exist in the form because you skipped it.
    But it is included in the hidden input ‘field_ids’, near the bottom of the form.
    BP will try to save it, based on the fields ids, but not find it and then throw the error.

    Instead of skipping, try changing the field type to hidden.

    If you don’t want it in the form at all, then skip it AND remove it from the string of included ids.
    Use bp_get_the_profile_group_field_ids() and do your removals and then put the new string in the ‘field_ids’ input field.

    Hi. I have 3 custom fields (required). I want that users can not edit one of them so i put this code as suggested:
    while ( bp_profile_fields() ) : bp_the_profile_field(); if ( get_current_user_id()=#ADMIN ID OR bp_get_the_profile_field_id() != 'ID # YOU WANT TO SKIP' ) :
    But when a user try to edit another field, it pops out this error

    Please make sure you fill in all required fields in this profile field group before saving.

    I think it occurs because the user can not see the hidden fields.

    How can I handle that?
    Regards.

    Hi. I have created 3 custom fields(required) with BP.
    I use this modification
    while ( bp_profile_fields() ) : bp_the_profile_field(); if ( get_current_user_id()=#ADMIN ID OR bp_get_the_profile_field_id() != 'ID # YOU WANT TO SKIP' ) :
    to deny that user can change a specific field.
    But If a user try to change another field, I have an error that
    ”
    Please make sure you fill in all required fields in this profile field group before saving.
    ”
    If think it pops out because I hide a field, but how can i handle this?
    Regards

    Hello,
    I’m running the latest versions of both WP and BP. I’m also using BP Xprofile Custom Fields Type, BP Security Check, and Spam Master – and I’m still getting nailed with spam – even with the BP Security Check working.

    Spam Master is blocking tons of it – mostly hotmail’s – but it still allows some hotmails through, as well as others that are on the “blocked” list.

    Tried just about every Captcha plug-in there is but they don’t seem to work with the Xprofile Custom Fields – and I really need to get first name, last, company, and title, as well as the standard username and email.

    I can get rid of the Xprofile plugin if there’s another way to get that information?

    Google reCaptcha doesn’t work at all. It shows up on the page but if you don’t fill it in it will still allow you to register.

    I’m completely stumped…these spam registrations are driving me crazy and I can’t stop seem to stop them!!!

    What is everyone else using/doing out there? Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    I’m looking for some guiding principles here about the best way to deal with some relatively complex queries.

    I have a location-based site running WP and BP (latest of each) that geo-tags everything as it is created (users, activity, some CPTs etc.)

    On the front end, when a user browses the members directory, for example, they see only the other users within an x-mile radius (there is a slider for x).

    Similarly, activity status updates, they see only those updates within a given radius.

    At the moment I construct a custom $sql query which includes testing the lat & lng I have stored as extra xprofile fields or fields in wp_bp_activity_meta plus one or two other filters.

    This works, but I don’t know whether it is optimal, or scaleable.

    An alternative would be to do it in 2 steps: to use the normal bp loop functions to return all potential results regardless of location, and then write a PHP function to apply the radius test.

    Would the database be more efficient at running that test or does it choke on complex queries and it would be beneficial to break it up? The core BP functions are presumably highly optimised already.

    Doing it in 2 steps would mean there was some scope for caching the first set of results, doing it all in 1 rules out caching as every query will be different, barring someone refreshing the page.

    I’m asking this now because I’m about to dip my toes into adding Groups, with similar location-awareness. It shouldn’t be too difficult to replicate what I’ve done with Members and Activity, so that users only see Groups within a certain radius. But where it might get tricky is I’m contemplating going more granular. That is to say, having some universal groups and/or forums where, for example, individual forum posts are geo-tagged, so users in one area will see some of the posts and users in another area will see different posts within the same group/forum.

    I imagine the queries might get a bit hairy, and hence the question about whether to continue with custom queries or to use the BP loops as a starting point for a function which then applies the location radius test.

    Phew. Thanks.

    I would like to have a better control over xprofile fields creation.
    Specially maxlength and is_numeric declaration avaible on the editor page.

    Something like:

    Add a new field (select field type) > single line textarea
    Maxlength ? [] Numeric ? []

    Filtering bp-get-xprofile-field-data for each custom field is not always pertinent IMO. 😉

    I know there are multiple plugins that allow you to login with Facebook instead of WordPress, but are there any that allow you to require additional fields when registering with BuddyPress, like ‘zip code’, ‘reason for joining’ or ‘date of birth’?

    WordPress 3.8.1
    BuddyPress 1.9.2
    GravityForms 1.8.4 with User Registration Add-on
    Website: https://partnersimple.com/

    Is there any way to force BuddyPress to use the User Registration form I created in Gravity Forms? First, I can prepopulate the fields with information already provided by my members’ payment page. Second, User Registration forms have cool features like prepopulated states and country names. The question is how to pass to BP the information provided in GF. Any ideas?

    Just a heads up, because I know a lot of people have asked and not gotten anywhere, but you can use this feature + Buddypress Xprofile Custom Fields Type plugin to create a forum badges feature. That was my goal with this and it works. You just need to display:none; the field# class so that users dont see it as an option to edit in their profile. Then you have complete control and can give users badges that show up in the forums 😀

    Hello,
    I am new to this and I am trying to get the BuddyPress plugin to work correctly. I installed the plugin from the wordpress dashboard. Then I created some user profile fields. Next, I was trying to create new groups, but when I am in dashboard, I go to ‘Groups’ then push the ‘add new’ button it takes me to a page with a 404 error. Im not real sure why it is doing this or what I need to do. I am wondering if I missed something when installing. Any help will be greatly appreciated! If you need more info just let me know.

    Thanks for your reply Henry 🙂

    I can’t find anything that looks like that in the database, and when going through the table names, there isn’t anything that sounds like having something to do with xProfile ?

    I need to find the ID of the fields, so i can use them with BuddyPress Profile Progression “bppp_progression_block($user_id)”.

    All the best

    No, they’re not treated as posts. They are called xProfile fields and form part of the xProfile component. They’re saved in their own table which I do believe is called wp_bp_xprofile_fields

    Hi

    I’m trying to get some progression bar working on filling out profile fields on a dating site, and need to know how they are treated.

    Are the single fields treated as posts, or as something else ?

    Two more methods that help. I recently had a crazy spam attack – probably 300 fake signups per day. I implemented these two methods and it dropped to near 0.

    1. Change the /register/ slug to something unique. An example would be /create-your-account/, or something of that nature. It just needs to be unique and also make sense in a URL for your user. Spammers targeting BuddyPress look for /register/ as the signup page. It’s all automated so you want to filter them out at the first step.

    2. Add this to your functions.php file in your theme or child theme.

    It presents a dummy field that humans don’t see. Spambots will fill it out, and if the field captures a value it will reject the signup.

    // BuddyPress Honeypot
    function add_honeypot() {
        echo '';
    }
    add_action('bp_after_signup_profile_fields','add_honeypot');
    function check_honeypot() {
        if (!empty($_POST['system55'])) {
            global $bp;
            wp_redirect(home_url());
            exit;
        }
    }
    add_filter('bp_core_validate_user_signup','check_honeypot');

    Credits for #2 go to:
    http://mattts.net/development-stuff/web-development-stuff/wordpress/buddypress/anti-spam-techniques/registration-honeypot/

    I edited it slightly to remove the required redirect. Add that back from his tutorial if you want to. It requires that you make an extra page to send the spammer to, and I personally think that’s not necessary. I actually want them to have no indication their signup failed.

    After snooping around I can see that the tables for the profile fields are created in profile-loop.php and bp_the_profile_field_value is defined in bp-xprofile-template.php I’m not sure about editing these files though…

    I can’t seem to find the file that directs the items in a profile field to be separated by a comma, however I did find this topic: bp_the_profile_field_value and separating values

    Instead of separating the items in the <td class="data"><?php bp_the_profile_field_value(); ?></td> by commas, I want to make them into an un-ordered list.

    Any thoughts on how?

    Hello!

    I need help regarding BuddyPress xprofile fields visibility. While setting up profile fields I choose – Per Member Visibility – Let members change this field’s visibility

    Only for some particular fields irrespective of what settings a user has, I want the fields viewable by

    1. profile owner (bp_is_my_profile)
    2. admin
    3. S2member level / Custom Role

    I know, irrespective of the settings the fields will still be available to the first 2 candidates. How can I add the 3rd?

    Also, I don’t want all fields available to the 3rd candidate (custom role). There are fields like contact number, email etc which I don’t want to be viewable by the 3rd candidate. So the customization is required to certain fields only.

    Kindly guide or please advise if a plugin can do this.

    Thank you in advance 🙂

    I am modifying my members-loop.php to display some additional profile fields. I want to show the “Bio” field, however I want to limit the length of it to make an excerpt.

    Here’s what I currently have:
    <span class="short-bio"><?php echo bp_member_profile_data('field=Bio...'); ?></span>

    How can I make it so that it only displays a certain length of it (like 200 characters or something)?

    I have mostly completed my registration form, but cannot get certain profile field groups to post to a users profile once submitted.

    as you can see in the code below, I have 4 sections. The first one is the default fields, which will submit. I can get the first and last section to submit, no matter if i rearrange section 2 or 3 and move it to section 4, somehow only section 1 & 4 will only get submitted. Section 2-4 are all the same code, with only the id changed. EG: ‘profile_group_id=1’

    CODE: http://pastebin.com/1rJBjyqj

    You can see it live here. http://ngx2gaming.com/register

    I have a feeling it is something simple, but am unable to figure it out. Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks!
