Curious to see how it looks with the new default BP-theme

Ah…sorry to spam you somewhat but I was also wondering if there were any plans to enable easy “quoting” within the forums with this theme/BP version (or a future theme/etc). We’ve finally convinced ourselves that flat forums are good but I think we’re definitely going to have to get some sort of quoting mechanism working.
edit:
I’ve just seen this post: http://testbp.org/groups/buddypress-testers-614548248//forum/topic/forum-or-wire-with-comments/
Hopefully I’ll be able to get that sorted as a plugin sometime soon.

KeymasterThe sidebar will be widgetized. It should be quite simple to mix it up with your own sidebar and make extra widget areas that only show on certain pages.

I don’t suppose you could give us any info in regards to the planned widget options for the site? It would be quite nice to be able to specify different widgets for some pages (for example, the group pages/group components) but from the sounds of what you’re aiming at in terms of a site with a consistent interface, that might not be what you’re going for.
Obviously we can mod anything we need in but the lazy and selfish part of me hopes that you’re designing stuff exactly as I want it :p
edit:
Also thought I’d mention that it might be nice to change the theme so that clicking on your avatar also directs you to your profile page (in addition to clicking on your name). Several of our users have requested this. As before, we can mod this in if need be, but it seems like something that would be a nice feature for most installations.

ParticipantSorry to bother, but do I have to do any customisation? Do I need to buy thesis? And if so, is the customisation on the thesis theme difficult to do?

Keymaster@David Lewis – I will probably play with a few child themes over Xmas and produce some new color schemes with a bit more “flair”. Putting that stuff in the default is just annoying for people who want to extend it.

ParticipantI agree that it’s a big step forward from a usability point of view. The two column side navigation confuses everyone at first (and second) glance. And constancy is critical in user interface design. Floating the admin bar is a great usability idea too. And the “New Post” and “New Group” buttons on those directory pages is absolutely brilliant. That’s a huge leap in usability. People are always very confused with the current Forums directory page. So that’s all great! Very good work.
What I’m really missing though is all the beautiful little details from the previous design. Those ‘speech bubble’ arrows on the title backgrounds (although they were somewhat overused). The nice gradients on the title backgrounds. The beautiful (and useful) little icons in the navigation. The beautiful rounded buttons with their little arrows, icons, checkmarks and busy cursors. And just the overall brand feel of the yellow orange and grey. It really was (and still is) a beautiful design. But generic makes more sense for a default theme. Like the Kubrik theme for WordPress. And easier theme development is always good. I also recognize the the new theme is a work in progress.

ParticipantWIth the new theme for 1.2 I think that the forums are very secondary to the “what’s new”-box for the personal profile and groups.
If “what’s new”-messages in the activty feed at the frontpage and groups would appear at the top of the list when commented, there’d be no use of the forums at all.
If you’d be able to tinyMCE or attach files to the “what new”-input you’d be another step away from having the forum component.
I guess BP is made for thousands of users. But those of us having about 1000 registered users at the very most (and about 1/5 active of them) will have to make lesser avenues for the users (no blogs, no forums, only personal and groups “whats new”/status update) so that the activity isn’t diluted.

ParticipantLovely!
I like what I see. Much more Facebooky.
The main thing is that the userbar/optionsbar is no longer vertical. It’s a huge improvement for me! Now I won’t have to edit that much of the code.

ParticipantNone of these help. My subdomains are working fine for everything except registration. I’ve done a clean install.
My problem is with the registration page on the subdomain. My users should be able to register from the subdomain blogs. I’ve installed the buddypress default theme on the subdomain to see if it makes a difference. No change.
sub.domain.com works just fine.
sub.domain.com/register does not work.

Participant@Bpisimone , et, all..
i love the default answer of: “its not a BP issue, its a wp or wpmu issue” — i see that thrown around here way too often.
first, –i get it.. “..its outside the scope…” but the default.. “go elsewhere” as an answer just makes me cringe..
second, — please consider that.. to many enduser-installers (not a developer)of BP.. such as myself… to us, BP is the main product and NOT just a plugin. –and WP/WPMU is just an afterthought…
thanks…

InactiveNope. For an xtra profile page you’ll need to use something like this:
/**
* Setup update location nav item
* @since 1.0
*/
function sv_xprofile_xtra_nav()
{
global $bp;
$profile_link = $bp->loggedin_user->domain . $bp->profile->slug . '/';
bp_core_new_subnav_item( array( 'name' => __( 'Update Location', 'scuba' ), 'slug' => 'update-location', 'parent_url' => $profile_link, 'parent_slug' => $bp->profile->slug, 'screen_function' => 'sv_screen_update_location', 'position' => 15 ) );
}
add_action( 'xprofile_setup_nav', 'sv_xprofile_xtra_nav' );
/**
* Display location update screen
* @since 1.0
*/
function sv_screen_update_location()
{
if ( !bp_is_home() && !is_site_admin() )
return false;
/* Check to see if any new information has been submitted */
if( isset( $_POST['save'] ) )
{
/* Check the nonce */
check_admin_referer( 'sv_profile_update_location' );
if( $_POST['user_lat'] && ! $_POST['user_long'] || ! $_POST['user_lat'] && $_POST['user_long'] )
{
bp_core_add_message( __( 'You need to provide both a latitude and a longitude.', 'scuba' ), 'error' );
$error = true;
}
if( ! $error )
{
$lat = apply_filters( 'sv_sanitize_user_input', $_POST['user_lat'] );
$long = apply_filters( 'sv_sanitize_user_input', $_POST['user_long'] );
$id = apply_filters( 'sv_sanitize_user_input', $_POST['user_id'] );
$loc = array(
'user_lat' => $lat,
'user_long' => $long
);
update_usermeta( $id, 'user_location', $loc );
bp_core_add_message( __( 'Your location has been updated!', 'buddypress' ) );
do_action( 'sv_successful_location_update' );
}
}
bp_core_load_template( apply_filters( 'sv_xprofile_template_update_location', 'profile/location' ) );
}Then you obviously need a template file as well in your theme in the profiles folder. I use the above code to let the user pick his geo position on a google map and then I display the users on a flash map on the members directory page.

Participant“That” page is actually a WordPress page and as such has not much to do with BP. Let Andy take care of the more important things…
With basic skill level however you should be able to do that yourself like so: http://www.problogdesign.com/wordpress/custom-wordpress-login-screen/
Are there any important hardcoded theme changes in this one Andy (apart from the obvious total css renewal?

KeymasterThe colors are easily customized. It’s also possible to upload a custom background image for the header. This theme is supposed to provide a much simpler and more usable base for people to create themes from. The old default was not a good base at all.
