    You can create your own css class function to do this… similar to how WP’s Thematic, Sandbox and Hybrid themes have their own css class output function.

    Here’s a few lines to get you started:

    global $bp;
    echo $bp->current_component; //outputs current component

    echo '<br />'; // redundant line break! don't worry about this line!

    echo $bp->current_action; // outputs current action

    Hope that helps!

    [EDIT]

    For directories… you’ll have to check if the page is either BP_MEMBERS_SLUG, BP_GROUPS_SLUG, BP_BLOGS_SLUG.

    eg. if ( bp_is_page( BP_MEMBERS_SLUG ) ) echo ' members';

    It sounds interesting but I doubt it would be possible.

    Tried checking your site out but I can only see a wp-theme. Clicking registration gets me this:

    http://current_site_domaincurrent_site_path/

    Have you disabled it or is more things not working?

    Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for the reply…

    Unfortunately it doesn’t.

    I tried deleting the skeleton member theme but it still shows that ugly page with no design. What else could be wrong?

    yes, just the home theme is affected to my knowledge. I got the 404 to work when clicking a hard link inthe site that was not real, but if I type in an arbitrary page that was never created then I get the search page. I am using the default theme from the last version of WPMU, but slightly modified. I guess I will copy those functions and see what happens. thanks.

    I have the “Theme My Login” plugin installed, obviously when a user clicks on the “profile” link it goes to wp-admin/profile.php page instead of /members/[username]/profile. There are options to put a new URL, and I tried to copy John’s but it’s not workin, any ideas?

    My site is momchatter.com

    but when I click on any member or go to the members page, the template for members doesn’t load.

    Elisheva-

    Welcome to the BuddyPress forums!

    When I went to your site and clicked on the “Members” button, it did bring up a members’ theme. However, it seems like you have selected the “Skeleton BuddyPress Member Theme” and not the “BuddyPress Default Member Theme”.

    Please go back into the admin panle to “Buddypress > General Settings”, select “BuddyPress Default Member Theme” and then make sure to hit the “Save Settings” button at the bottom.

    If the default member theme is already selected, deselect it by selecting a different theme, hit the “Save Settings” button, and then reselect the “BuddyPress Default Member Theme” once again and hit the “Save Settings” button one more time.

    Does that fix the issue?

    Try switching back to the default BP home theme and see if that theme’s 404 page works. If it does, then that means the theme you are using is not up to date with the BP theme file changes.

    If that is the case, you can do two things:

    1. Try copying over the functions.php file from the bphome file into your custom theme and see if that solve the issue.

    2. Contact the theme designer and ask when they plan to update their theme to be WPMU 2.8.1 compatible–I assume you are talking just about the home theme and not the member theme.

    There’s not too much you can do–unless you made a backup of your MySQL DB before messing with it in the backend.

    You should always make a backup of your DB before you do anything to it that may result in changes to the data or the data schema. In fact, make a backup of your DB at the end of each coding day just incase the unexpected happens.

    I assume that you did zero customizations to the data schema of your MySQL DB. If so, then just delete your current DB and then create a new one with the exact same username and password. But, if you do this, you’ll need to reinstall BuddyPress so that BP’s tables get created in the DB. You will also have to reenter any test data, but it should get you back up an running.

    Also, I’m not sure why this is an issue:

    I’ve customized so much code on the back end that reinstalling buddypress would be a huge pain.

    Do you mean that you have hacked the core or WPMU and / or BuddyPress? If so, you should stop doing that as every time BuddyPress is updated, your hacks will be lost.

    Instead of hacking the core BP files, either create your own custom plugin(s) to hold your code, or use the bp-custom.php file. That way, if and when you need to delete your install and start from scratch, you can easily do so. Just make sure you have back ups of any custom theme files, a listing of all your plugins, a copy of your bp-custom.php file, and a copy of your wp-config.php file assuming that you want to use the same MySQL DB.

    The theme used on this site will not be made available. This question is asked about once a week. Here was the first thread that posed that question. See Andy’s response.

    You can design your own theme to accomplish a similar effect–use Firefox with Firebug and see how Andy styled the theme.

    I read about some plug-in that would give you the ability to do this. Search for buddypress in the plug-ins repository.

    If you translate the default theme, that’s all you do – you don’t have to change any of the images *unless you want to*. Good luck!

    @JJJ: I see your point. Thinking of it now, it makes sense. BP isn’t meant to be a finished product design wise like Jomsocial, it’s supposed to be themed like K2.

    @ David: In my opinion users above 35 who are used to forums and are already unsure what such social networks are for need the simplest navigation possible. As you said, I think that drop-down with fly-outs (when they work properly, as for example on linux.com) give you a sense of how the site is organised, and that’s precisely why I find it would be particularly useful in this case. Especially if the BP community is part of a lager site with front page news, directories, etc, and that there is a higher navigation level.

    If I use BP for my site, I will definitely seek to simplify it’s navigation to the bare minimum, and try to figure out how to intelligently combine the utility of BP and a forum, which in my view is the other big issue.

    You go to the themes admin and turn it off from there.

    Does anyone know how much (server) memory is used by a single user visiting an integrated bbPress+BuddyPress installation (assuming standard installs and themes)? This could be a big impact on the ability of the system to scale to many users and lots of traffic.

    I remember _ck_ (moderator on the bbPress forum) saying that it would be about 1MB, but that was before BackPress integrated a lot of the overlapping functionality.

    How would one measure something like this?

    It won’t break any functionality. You’re not modifying the core. You’re just creating your own theme based on the default theme. When you update, just make sure you don’t overwrite the entire wp-content directory (there the themes are kept).

    Haven’t touched themes… I edited original post above… it looks as though there’s actually zero buddypress code being loaded in sub-domain headers… hence no buddy bar…. so that’s the problem, the buddybar is merely a symtom….

    Erm, it’s working on my hosted blogs. No immediate ideas. Have you changed/upgraded the themes the member blog(s) have used?

    On a side note, is there any chance of the bp.org theme appearing as an option?

    Nope. Search the forums if you want a bit more story on why; this question is asked at least once a week!

    You would edit profile fields like this via /wp-admin/admin.php?page=buddypress/bp-xprofile.php on your installation, but it looks like you can’t add a description for the default Name theme (which you can’t edit or remove).

    Nice catch. Report it as an enhancement suggestion on https://trac.buddypress.org/; use your username and password from this site to log in.

    Uho… DJPaul, are you saying there’s a possibility of a conflict between a customised theme and the update, or is it certain?

    #50415

    Will I risk having to have the whole thing redone at every update?

    Yes – because you’ll essentially be customising the default BuddyPress themes.

    I’m new to this but I think that you have to add a sidebar into the member-page. I haven’t got the solution you’re searching for but this is a lead to follow:

    You have to modify the theme you’re using so that a sidebar shows. You can do this in

    /bp-themes/yourtheme/header.php

    Add:

    <?php get_sidebar( );

    At the end of the file.

    This will probably not work so well with uncustomized themes. There’s no room for the sidebar to show up. You’ll have to modify the look so that the sidebar shows correctly.

    The problem must be in the facebook theme, as when I switched to the default bphome theme, the groups directory appears as expected. I’ll inform the facebook theme developer of the glitch.

    On a side note, is there any chance of the bp.org theme appearing as an option?

    If you can build a WordPress theme, building a BuddyPress theme is not very hard – it is just larger.
