ParticipantHm, well I switched to the default theme but I still got the same error. It might be a problem with one of my plugins but I’m not sure. I think I’ll just hold off on upgrading for now hopefully they’ll become compatible.

ParticipantI am using the Custom Community theme. Looking through the files on the back end, but I am not used to handling things from this end. I really need someone to give me some ideas of what to look for. I did find the line mentioned in the error, but I don’t think that is where the adjustment needs to be made? I do not know how to disable plugins or adjust things outside of the Admin Page. It is really bad here…anyone have a few to help me? I am unable to monitor or even approve comments. Our website is pretty much out of control right now.
I am concerned about re-installing Buddy Press, when I am not even sure how to make sure my members accounts are not compromised. Will be up trying to get this resolved before tomorrow! It looks like the upgrade was successful, but there is a code somewhere that is locking me out of the WP dashboard.

ParticipantThank you, @Paul Gibbs. I am new to Buddy Press, and I am assuming that my theme which I chose to go with Buddy Press is the issue. What can I do? It seems that everything is working accept the admin page and the interaction among members. Any ideas where I should look first? Thank you for your assistance.

MemberA few days ago I had added a few widgets to give more to look at, but they are messed up right now from the BP update. Going to be working more on that front page, you are right it needs to show the features better.
Just been tweaking the theme since I am a total noob, but thank you for the input it really helps.

ModeratorHi k12onos, it’s weird you say you get this with the default theme as well. Could you provide a link perhaps to se this on your site – I understand it may not be live though.
Just as a check, are you using any plugins on top of BuddyPress? If you are have you made sure they are also updated for BuddyPress 1.6? I’m thinking there perhaps could be a scripting error from those.

KeymasterWait, it looks like you I need to purchase the theme before I can write them a support question. Nuts

Can you do that, and point them to this discussion, too? I’m happy to talk to them directly and work with them to understand the issue. We’re keen to know if it’s a theme-specific bug or something we broke in BuddyPress 1.6. Thanks for your help.

ParticipantIndeed switching to the BP default template does not show the issue. I would think that since salutation is one popular theme for buddypress you would want BP 1.6 to work smoothly. Any ideas how I can adjust the theme to the new BP? It was issue free with the previous version of BP 1.5. Do you think I should go after the theme makers?
Thanks for looking over this this far.
August 7, 2012 at 8:05 pm #138699Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterIIRC, there’s a lot of custom templating inside Salutation. ceric, are you able to switch your site over to the BP-Default theme for 1 minute – then test the admin bar again, and see if the problem is cleared or not? You can re-enable Salutation right after.
August 7, 2012 at 7:56 pm #138698Norman
ParticipantMind you this is the Salutation theme, I am sure you would know which theme.
I found this on functions.php:
define('AVATAR_SIZE', 35);
avatar size
There is a bp-custom.php, with the following code in it:
if ( !defined( 'BP_AVATAR_THUMB_WIDTH' ) )
define( 'BP_AVATAR_THUMB_WIDTH', 35 ); //change this with your desired thumb width
if ( !defined( 'BP_AVATAR_THUMB_HEIGHT' ) )
define( 'BP_AVATAR_THUMB_HEIGHT', 35 ); //change this with your desired thumb height
What should I do now?
Thanks,

KeymasterI’m guessing you have a rogue code snippet that is overriding BuddyPress’ avatar code.
Check your theme’s functions.php file located at /wp-content/YOUR-THEME/functions.php also check /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php. Look for any code snippet that references avatars. Can you find any?
Also check any BuddyPress plugins you may have.

KeymasterMy guess would be a theme or another plugin: look at google.
What plugins are you running.
August 7, 2012 at 6:53 pm #138673Paul Wong-Gibbs
Keymaster@kmtrent – you probably have some code in a plugin or a theme that assumes BuddyPress is always loaded. This isn’t always the case, and obviously causes problems like this.
@ezcs – if you read your error line, you see it is coming from from plugins/buddypress-like/. That plugin hasn’t been updated for almost two years. Which version of BuddyPress did you upgrade from? Regardless, go into your site via FTP (or however you normally upload files), go into plugins, and rename the “buddypress-like” folder into something else. This should let you log back in to your site, go to the plugins page and it should display a message about a “broken plugin”.

ModeratorCan you activate BP-default to test? It may be a issue that the filter is not working on a child theme

ParticipantYes…problem still occurs, even after disabling all plugs and switching themes.
Strange issue. The WLW is attributed to something with the xmlrpc.php file, and so is the JetPack connection issue. So, I assume, based on that, there’s a problem with looping through user accounts, or accessing user accounts, when displaying groups/members/forums pages.

Keymaster@rodtrent – Disable all 3rd-party plugins you are using except BuddyPress – this includes JetPack, BP Gallery, etc. Next, change your theme to the bp-default theme. Now, retry your BP pages. Does your problem still occur?
August 7, 2012 at 4:54 pm #138655r-a-y
Keymaster@dacai – It sounds like these shortcodes rely on javascript to work.
There maybe a conflict between your plugin’s javascript, BuddyPress’ javascript and/or your theme’s javascript (assuming you are not using a variant of the bp-default theme).
I would try to find out the culprit by debugging the javascript with your browser’s developer tool.
If you’re using Firefox, try installing Firebug.
Here’s a video tutorial on how to use Firebug:
http://www.dev4press.com/2010/tutorials/wordpress/various/use-firebug-to-track-ajax-requests-and-responses/Once you have it installed, turn on the Firebug console and reload your page. If there are errors, the Firebug console will tell you which javascript files are failing.

MemberI’ve upgraded to 1.6 but the new WP Bar isn’t really what I’m looking for. I’d like to find a way to copy the code that initiates the WP Bar into my Theme header.php and work on the styling customizations from there.
The little bit I’ve tried didn’t work yet. Any thoughts or suggestions on where I should start?

ModeratorI’d suggest you give BuddyPress 1.6 a whirl – it’s kind of similar to that mockup for the bar

ModeratorIf it’s already a WordPress theme then you’re starting point probably would be the https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/. If you follow a guide like this https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-dev-bp-template-pack-walkthrough-twenty-ten-bp-1-5/ – that’s for Twenty Ten but can adapt.

ParticipantSame here. Read through the upgrade steps, went through all the same troubleshooting procedures, i.e., update them, tried default theme, cleared cache, disabled all plugins, resaved permalinks, tried creating new launch pages for groups, profiles, etc.

MemberHi Paul,
yes I did read through the page and have taken the appropriate steps to check things at my own end.I updated my theme, tried to use the default buddypress theme for testing, cleared my cache, disabled plugings, even repaired and optimised my db thru cpanel. But the 404 error persist!

ParticipantI found the quick solution! I clicked Appearance > Theme Options in the WP dashboard, there was a little tip that talks about the new WP admin bar. So I added `define(‘BP_USE_WP_ADMIN_BAR’, false);` to my wp-config.php file right above “/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */” and it worked perfect!
Personally I was disappointed in the absence of a quick option to just go back to the BuddyBar, the new WP admin bar just didn’t appeal to me. Happy BuddyPressing!

ModeratorHi Manswab, Would it be possible to see a link to your site? It could without seeing be one of two things:
– a too wide elements/wrong clearing
– a missing div/too many div closuresHowever, it would help to have a link to your site to confirm if that is possible?
