Participant@karmatosed, the issue is that, for me at least, the template pack instructions are too vague. It basically says that if you have issues with alignment, to look at your themes page.php and your activity/index.php (and all other buddypress created indexes) and figure it out.
The template pack instructions give you a second option: copy and rename your themes header.php, footer.php, and sidebar.php to header-buddypress.php, footer-buddypress.php, and sidebar-buddypress.php.
Well, then what? There are no files in buddypress to replace a header-buddypress.php. The instructions just end and don’t give the average user any idea of what needs to be replaced and where. Granted, every theme is different, but they don’t even give you a general idea. Just a vague description of a solution.
The theme I’m using, and it’s subject to change, is called “The Secret World” and is located here. http://l3cdn.funcom.com/tsw/download/wordpress-template.zip
I tried editing what I thought the template pack asked to do wut it didn’t work. I tried other methods posted that worked for others. None worked. I’m not sure where to go.
A link to a live-test site I’m tinkering with is http://forcedreality.net/members
Thanks for looking into it.

ModeratorProbably a good first step would be to ease some of the load and one by one remove those plugins – or remove them all add back in one by one. I find with errors like this often stripping back will help.
You could also ‘sanity’ check your theme by setting to the default BuddyPress theme – of course if a live community you may not be able to do this.

ModeratorIt’s a little hard to follow but my suggestion would be to follow the template pack instructions and not dip into two tutorials which unless I’m mistaken you are a little. The guide to the template pack also is just a guide there are so many ways of doing it theme wise that your theme may be structured differently.
If you are still having issues a good help may be to let us know what theme are you using and maybe a link so we can see the issue (if that is possible) for ourselves?
You should be fine with the last method as you say if that appears in your index.php. I do have one question on that though – did that appear after you did steps in template pack? If it was always there perhaps your theme is designed for BuddyPress anyway and won’t need the template pack? You only need it if your theme doesn’t support BuddyPress.

ParticipantBuddyPress supports private messaging ‘straight out of the box’ by default (‘send message’).
Do you mean ‘instant messaging’?

Participant@michaeljdornan – there’s a job board group on this site (not easy to find though!)
It makes sense to post your requirement there: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-jobs-board/forum/
Your costs could vary considerably – from just a few hours work to add basic BuddyPress capabilities to an existing ‘news’ theme (dependent on amount of HTML restructuring, styling), through to several weeks development to build a fully fledged news site with full backend workflow support and tight ‘site function related’ BP integration.
Having an indicative budget when you add to the jobs board would help.
If you don’t get it sorted through the job board, feel free to drop me a line.

Participant@workingman just so we can align the structure in one go, please post the codes for header.php, page.php, sidebar.php and footer.php as well.

ParticipantMembers can’t write on each other’s walls in BuddyPress anyway. Not unless you are using a plugin / bespoke theme that supports that.
If you are, you’ll have to disable the bp_is_friend() check in that code to enable the function in all cases.
July 3, 2012 at 7:45 pm #136746In reply to: BBPress Forums- sitewide and for groups not working
frostdawn
MemberOkay, I started from scratch.
BuddyPress upgraded to 1.5.6.
WordPress upgraded to 3.4.1.
bbPress v 2.0.3 (removed the old instance and rebuilt with this version to make sure and wiped out all old forums, topics and replies)
I’m using the BP Default theme for testing.
I deleted all my old pages so I had the bare bones pages to work with.
I deleted all old groups to make sure I also had a clean slate there.I’ve followed the codex to the letter here:
https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/I attempted to create JUST group forums and NOTHING else, using an existing bbPress Installation. I confirmed that the following were created:
wp_bb_forums
wp_bb_meta
wp_bb_posts
wp_bb_terms
wp_bb_term_relationships
wp_bb_term_taxonomy
wp_bb_topicsGroup forums failed. All I get is “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.” whenever I attempt to access forums from the (newly created, with forums enabled) groups page.
Then I went back to older postings about tricks other users have tried as noted here:
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/this-group-does-not-have-a-forum-setup-yet-1/?topic_page=1&num=15Post #7 was hailed as a the silver bullet by some users. Didn’t work for me. I went into my test group, edited it, removed forums, saved it. Renamed bb-config.php, reinstalled group forums. Went back in, re-enabled forums, saved again. Nothing.
I’ve performed about 4-5 different iterations and combinations of everything referenced in the above posts over the past several days now. Nothing. Groups forums is STILL not working. Can I offer money to someone to possibly help with this? Please? Anybody?

ParticipantSo I found the css solution:
I just added the following into my themes css:
.display-name h4 { display: none !important; }
.display-name table { display: none !important; }This will not show the base profile fields in the public view but will still allow the member to change username.
Hope this helps.

Member@mercime sorry to revive this topic, I followed your instructions, but buddypress is not correctly aligning yet (eg. http://www.linkin-park.it/newsite/members/linkin-park-italy/activity/). I’m using WordPress 3.4.1, Buddypress 1.5.6 and InStyle Theme 2.7. I’ve attached some code from my theme. Let me know if you can help me out, thanks in advance!

Help is much appreciated @karmatosedJuly 2, 2012 at 9:17 pm #136711Tammie Lister
ModeratorHave you used the template pack for BuddyPress? You need to either use that or make your theme a child theme of BuddyPress default. This is because the theme you are using is not a BuddyPress compatible theme from what I can see.

ParticipantMany thanks for the tip. I presume adding the line to the functions.php of a child theme would have the same effect.
Crazily enough the plugin still works perfectly. Haven’t tried the linking to social networking bit yet. But otherwise all good. Separate words can be links with square brackets, and you can exclude fields altogether.
July 2, 2012 at 1:48 pm #136694xprt007
ParticipantThe problem seemed to be the Precisio theme. It seems buddypress works only with specific themes or at least the one it suggests during configuration. So I changed to one suggested above. During installation, I changed yet again to the buddypress default theme suggested configuration. Later, I tried to revert to Precisio & all pages created by the buddypress plugin where blank.
At least I now know where the problem lies
Thank you & regards

ParticipantHave you started by doing all the basic steps:
1. Make a copy of your site (so you are not working on the live server)
2. Deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress
3. Switch to bp-default theme
4. [Ideally make sure you have updated WP / BP to the latest versions]
5. Then uninstall multisite [which instructions did you follow to do that?]Does it work correctly if you do this?
If so, the problem is in your theme or your plugins. If not, the problem is more general.
If working after these steps, switch to your theme, then activate plugins one by one, checking functionality at each stage.
If you can report back on that, it should be possible to give more help (if needed!)
[Edit: it would also be helpful if you gave the exact error message you received – with that information, finding the problem may be much simpler]

modemlooper
ModeratorI disagree, by using a child you are guaranteed to have a working site on upgrades aside from the few changes made which are usually mostly cosmetic. The good thing is you can do either to fit your needs.

Jaja..
MemberThanks,
I don’t like the idea behind Child Themes either,
People who start fresh with WP don’t understand the logic, and developers know what’s going on with new releases of WP so they know how to upgrade a theme to get new features.July 1, 2012 at 1:41 pm #136658Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterIt’s a problem with your “Decor” theme. Switch to twentyeleven or another theme, then go back to complete BuddyPress setup.

MemberHi just did a uninstall and reinstall but didn’t get any log errors. The errors below were the last errors that i received, but i don’t think they have anything to do with buddy press. Where should i go to get help with this?
I am running wordpress locally on a mamp server could that be the problem?
