ParticipantFound the problem – it was plugin based.
I am using the Genesis theme and had a plugin called Genesis Tabs. This allows for you to have category posts tabbed on your front page and would have to be network activated in order to use it. At any rate, this was causing the issue. I am going to follow up with the folks at Studiopress and see if they have any solutions.
Hope this helps somebody!

ParticipantHere’s what my developer came up with, though I sure would prefer this solution in the long term: http://csplacemaking.com/images/profile-questions.png. I can’t understand why anyone would be OK with their birthdate publicly displayed. Anyway it’s a hack, but it works…
She put it in the CSS file, and you have to know the numeric field IDs. Scroll to the end of the themes/[your theme, in my case, Tachyon from Rocketthemes]/css/template.css file and adjust the following code:
.controlwidget {display: inline-block; float: left;margin-left: 1px;}
html body table.profile-fields tr.field_3, html body table.profile-fields tr.field_3 * { display: none !important; }
html body table.profile-fields tr.field_2, html body table.profile-fields tr.field_2 * { display: none !important; }
html body table.profile-fields tr.field_15, html body table.profile-fields tr.field_15 * { display: none !important; }March 1, 2012 at 2:08 pm #130696heyshamsw
MemberI’ve not managed to fix this but I have discovered a work-around.
I’ve installed the Widgets on Pages plugin, add the necessary widgets to the widget area I’ve named “bpSidebar”, then in the child theme’s functions.php file added:This uses one of the theme’s hooks to place the widget area on the page.
As I say, this is a work-around rather than a fix.March 1, 2012 at 10:57 am #130693jamesmcbennett

I take your advice and choose a)

@jamesmcbennett Not at this time.
== Below are codes as asked for. ==
Checked the code and you have two options
a) Create two files, header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php, add some code and upload to your theme folder in server and you’re done.
– Con: your BP page titles will be within content area and not how it appears per product page.
– Pro: When BP is upgraded, no worries about upgrading the two files. Only need to check files when your WP theme is upgraded.b) Change 16 BP template files where changes to top and bottom areas are the same except for register.php. In this set up, you would have to change each template file’s page title containers yourself.
– Con: You would have to revise 16 template files each time BP/BP template pack plugin is upgraded
– Pro: You could have your page titles in BP pages looking like the rest of the site’s page titles.I would opt for a) but it’s up to you, a) or b) ?

MemberHi yadigit
Many thanks for your reply.
I’m afraid I do not know the Avatar upload is controlled.
I have no special plugins.
The 2 plugins I use are BuddyPress template pack and bbpress plugin.
The avatar control is probably through those (except WordPress always has had avatar control so possibly it is inbuilt from my WP theme?).
I don’t know exactly as I am so new to BuddyPress!-sorry…I am more concerned still about my BP site functionality and have several questions on that eg
1.How do I create a forum topic?2. Why is settings>general returning a blank browser page?
In short how do I use BuddyPress and what can I do with it on my site given that I mainly want to use it as a forum?
I am grateful for more helpful replies, comments and feedback-thanks

Member@mercime Apologies for delay, I will be checking this routinely from now on. (Is there a way to subscribe getting an email post each time somebody responds?)
Below are codes as asked for. Thanks so much in advance.
header.php http://pastebin.com/J4rfMENC
Index.php http://pastebin.com/h7ZNctwD
page.php http://pastebin.com/gcEwUsSr
sidebar.php http://pastebin.com/EZJV9Xeu

MemberThank you for the help – it is most appreciated.
I tried both methods of making the theme compatible with BuddyPress. Neither worked.
Here are the pastebin.com URIs:
header.php
http://pastebin.com/hEeQyBz4index.php
http://pastebin.com/KxvBqhQmpage.php
http://pastebin.com/uDa4eLp4sidebar.php
http://pastebin.com/0QS9ffewfooter.php
http://pastebin.com/hSq7wVkFAlso, a correction to my initial set-up information – the site is on a sub-domain: http://demo.e-learning-rules.com
As I mentioned in my initial post, when I look at the HTML displayed in the browser, the sidebar code is completely missing, as if the sidebar function is just not being called.
Thanks again for your help.

Participant@heyshamsw we can only try our best to resolve such issues.
So what method did you try to use to make your theme compatible with BuddyPress, the first method which changes 16 template files or the second method with the xxx-buddypress.php files? https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/wordpress-to-buddypress-theme/
To help you evaluate which method is good for your WP theme, open up your theme’s header.php, copy code, paste code in pastebin.com, click submit, and post the generated pastebin.com uri here. Do the same thing for index.php, page.php, sidebar.php and footer.php.
Site URI with said thematic child theme would be helpful as well.

ParticipantB. At the bottom of the same 16 files, replace:
`
`
with the following (except for registration/register.php):
``
with the following for registration/register.php:
`jQuery(document).ready( function() {
if ( jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).length && !jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).hasClass(‘show’) )
jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).toggle();
jQuery( ‘input#signup_with_blog’ ).click( function() {
jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).fadeOut().toggle();
});
});`
C. Save files. Upload 6 BP folders to your server wp-content/themes/mantra/
D. You might also want to check out the style modifications made in BP Twenty Ten for reference. https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-dev-bp-template-pack-walkthrough-twenty-ten-bp-1-5/3/

ParticipantOk, I didn’t see that sidebar with the analog clock earlier on the registration page.
You will need to change 16 template files within the 6 BP folders transferred to your weaver theme in server during the compatibility process.
If you’ve changed any of the BP template files in your theme folder, replace all of them by deleting the 6 BP folders in server – /activity, /blogs, /forums, /groups, /members, and /registration – then re-run Appearance > BP Compatibility
Download the 6 clean BP folders to your computer hard drive.
A. At the top of each of those 16 template files I linked to above, replace
``with
`<div id="post-” class=”hentry”>`February 29, 2012 at 9:16 am #130643heyshamsw
MemberHi,
Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
I’m completely at a loss.
Thanks

MemberIt seems to be tied to the child theme I’m using. When I switch themes, buddypress works. I’ve put in a note to the author. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Memberokay deactivated every plugin except BuddyPress. Am using BP-Mag theme built for BuddyPress…
no activation email still! I am screwed!

KeymasterIf you don’t want to use multisite, the only other way is to use a single blog, and set each user up as Author role (so they can only edit and publish their own posters). Look at how something like Automattic’s P2 theme works (bpdevel.wordpress.com for an example).
February 28, 2012 at 8:57 pm #130616@mercime
ParticipantDeactivate BP Template Pack plugin by renaming folder in wp-content/plugins/bp-template-pack to something like bp-template-pack-xx”
BP Corporate theme, if it’s the same theme I’m thinking of, does not need and/or would have conflict with BP Template Pack. Please contact theme developer to confirm.

Memberhi,
thanks for having a look.
no, i haven’t fixed it yet. actually, the sidebar (including analog clock) is supposed to be on the right side. content in the middle, (and calendar on the left)February 28, 2012 at 5:26 pm #130597In reply to: cant post in sitewide forums

KeymasterBpd/theme compat issues shouldn’t affect bbPress 2 at all. Maybe go on the bbPress.org forums and see if there are similar problems reported.

ParticipantHave you tried to change bp-default theme?
February 28, 2012 at 4:52 pm #130591@mercime
Participant@egehlhaar looks like you’ve fixed the sidebar issue. I see the sidebar in the right location in your register page.

see this…

maybe something with mod_rewrite?February 28, 2012 at 9:50 am #130577kuching
Participantoh ok I see.. well I guess I’ll turn off altogether all profile activities at this point because I don’t use groups, forums with bb2.0 are not supported and commenting on posts is neither
I’ll look forward for BP1.6

is much code going to change from bp1.5.x to 1.6? right now I’m developing some custom theme for wp/bb/bp and customising the profile pages as well (like inserting new tabs…) I hope it won’t break when I’ll upgrade to 1.6
thanks

ParticipantBump.
Could a file be overwriting my style.css for my theme somehow? I am really scratching my head here as to why no changes I make to my style.css take effect.
