ParticipantA little background information would have helped, yes the image shows things are not right, and by looks of things shows you are using a custom theme or a WP theme that you are trying to make compatible with BP? if that’s the case have you used the template pack? have you followed all the steps exactly i.e step 3

ParticipantThis is a WP question really you can add links via the nav menus if your theme has a menu registered for the footer area, create a WP page as usual and then add it to your footer nav menu.

Participantlook in footer.php – make any adjustments in a child theme rather than in bp-default files.

Participant-1 for all those theme options. At least 2 can be handled by plugins if the admin wants all that extra functionality.

Participantlink to your site please.
I suspect it’s either permalinks or you haven’t finished setting up compatibility in your theme.

ParticipantHi,
thanks @djpaul for the instructions. We will write a patch hopefully until Friday.
I guess some things were misunderstood… to switch from right to left is easy done by css, but has nothing to do with the double sidebar conflict we need to avoid, if a plugin comes with a sidebar and we add one in the footer too.
I guess best is just to write the patch and check if it fits the needs.
To have an option page is a great idea, but more a feature for me than a bugfix. I’d like to concentrate on the basics first. Actually, to move the sidebar in the footer is one step to have options built in much more easy.
For the future, I believe the bbpress way of handling templates files is a good example and like I understood, the idea behind is that we will have no need of header, footer, sidebars and so on, we just deliver the content part and make themedesign much easier this way.
looking forward

MemberHere are a few:
A area for adding custom CSS.
Layout Manager (post area size, sidebar size, sidebar location, number of sidebars) (should also be able to have different layouts for each page/posts)
Sidebar Manager (different sidebars on different pages)
Hook Manager (a place to input php and html without needing to edit the functions.php)
Several Widget Locations
That’s just off the top of my head.
I know many that are not well versed in css would like custom H tags, text size, color, etc., but for me if there is a easy way to add custom css I can do without other css options.
The options should not necessarily make customizing easier. The goal should be making upgrading easier. Most people that use the theme will have some basic understanding of css and php, unlike most WP users. You don’t want to get carried away with it and end up like those slow, bloated premium WP themes full of endless database calls.

KeymasterFor the future, if it would be appropriate for the bundled BuddyPress theme to have an options panel (with the same type of idea as twentyeleven), I think it could make sense. However, always keep in mind Decisions not options. But for BP 1.3, bearing in mind that we want to have a beta as soon as we can manage, I am not convinced there is enough development time*.
What are the options that you would propose to have in a theme options panel?

Participant@boonebgorges I’m a pretty much advanced-level BP template wrangler at this point, but I am confused about the instructions for upgrading this, or even if it’s necessary. Everything seems to be working fine as it is, so I’m a little leery.
I’m using a custom theme I put together, and I’ve got the older BP Template pack enabled. I’ve made major customizations to most of the BP-specific template files in my theme in MyTheme/activity, /groups, /members and so on.
What I’m very unclear on is what the process would be in upgrading the template pack plugin, and what exactly is going to happen when (if) I do so.
I’d very much appreciate some detailed guidance on this. Thanks!

MemberI’m not sure this is the right place for this but….
What the default theme really needs is a Theme Options Panel like many “premium” WP themes.
The only thing harder than modifying a BP theme is updating it later. Typically I’m not a fan of Theme Options Panels because they add extra bloat and database calls, but in the case of BP that would be a trade-off I would take. You can just make your changes and not have to worry about keeping track of all of them at update time.

Participant1. https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network first with all plugins deactivated and using twentyten theme
2. Then allow Blog Creation in dashboard BuddyPress > General Settings

Participant@LPH2005 theme looks nice and clean.
WP themes will look similar at one point or another. I’ve seen freebies with similar design as well, though I suspect many/all of them would warrant a visit to the Theme Decoding Thread https://wordpress.org/support/topic/posts-requests-for-theme-decoding-in-here-1?replies=424

Participant“and there is no such directory…”
t will not make a directory on the server. They are *virtual* the same way pretty permalinks work.
@ppdesigns please give a link to your site. You don;t move the bp templates to the top level folder of your install. This is all *theme* based. Any templates files you move from the default BP theme go in the theme you want to use.
And yes, buddypress is what I would call intermediate usage.

ParticipantAre you using the default buddypress theme? If not, you need the bp template pack to put the bp template files in your theme. that’s why they won’t work.
