or maybe something with unserialize&stripslashes?

    I found this in reference to the code mentioned above:

    * xprofile_format_profile_field()
955 *
956 * Formats a profile field according to its type. [ TODO: Should really be moved to filters ]
957 *
958 * @package BuddyPress Core
959 * @param $field_type The type of field: datebox, selectbox, textbox etc
960 * @param $field_value The actual value
961 * @uses bp_format_time() Formats a time value based on the WordPress date format setting
962 * @return $field_value The formatted value
963 */
964 function xprofile_format_profile_field( $field_type, $field_value ) {
965 if ( !isset($field_value) || empty( $field_value ) )
966 return false;
967
968 $field_value = bp_unserialize_profile_field( $field_value );
969
970 if ( 'datebox' == $field_type ) {
971 $field_value = bp_format_time( $field_value, true );
972 } else {
973 $content = $field_value;
974 $content = apply_filters('the_content', $content);
975 $field_value = str_replace('', '', $content);
976 }
977
978 return stripslashes( stripslashes( $field_value ) );
979 }

    and this

    function bp_unserialize_profile_field( $value ) {

    522 if ( is_serialized($value) ) {

    523 $field_value = maybe_unserialize($value);

    524 $field_value = implode( ', ', $field_value );

    525 return $field_value;

    526 }

    527

    528 return $value;

    529 }

    Hey All!

    I am trying to figure out how to exclude certain blogs/comments from recent activity. I have a private blog on my wordpress mu instance running buddypress and it is showing up posts and comments on the blog on my recent activities stream…

    Can I exclude certain blogs somehow from that stream?

    You should make it a plugin, then add this to the plugin and activate. If you’d like to see a working implementation then check out these plugins:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-twitter

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-groupblog

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/external-group-blogs

    You should be saving extra group information as groupmeta:

    bp_groups_update_groupmeta( $group_id, 'name', $value );

    There’s a plugin in the WP repository to favorite posts (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-favorite-posts/). The favorites are stored in the database so they can be retrieved with the user id for the profile. I agree this concept should be expanded to other components (groups, blogs) in BP. I plan to create a custom post type and use this plugin (possibly modified) to show favorites of that post-type on the profile (e.g. favorite bars). For example, Tastykitchen.com could use to track favorite recipes as recipes are just posts with custom fields.

    This functionality is needed and if it doesn’t exist when I get to that stage of my project, I’ll add it and shsre. The more people think of WP/BP as a CMS, the more the need for these types of functionalities becomes apparent.

    Upgrade to the latest version of WPMU and this will be fixed.

    If you don’t want to upgrade immediately, you can edit one file to fix it:

    This could increase usage from mobile users for updating their status on BP.

    If we could use ping.fm api or adapt something like this for activity stream?

    I’m also curious as to how larger sites upgrade. We only have 100 users presently but need to potentially support thousands.

    1. Yes I backup db and files. sql file is now about 40MB.

    2. No announcement but may need to when site sees more activity.

    2. Use Maintenance Mode plugin during upgrade:

    That’s because there is no buddypress theme for your users blogs, they just take the standard wordpress theme, just like when you would make a WPSA install.

    I thought it would be good to alert people to take a look at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/336953?replies=1. Whilst contributing to that discussion is a good idea, does anyone have any ideas how this could apply to the BuddyPress site/project?

    Ah right. I’d copy/pasted that from a standard WordPress theme. Thanks for the correction.

    I have an installation of wordpress mu that I have been running for a few years. I just installed and activated the buddypress plugin and themes for the first time.

    When i click on the blog link from the front page,

    I get an error message saying:

    “The page you were looking for was not found. “

    I figured that the blog posts already in the system would show up under that link.

    Is there something else I need to do?

    I am running mu 2.86 and Buddypress 1.1.3

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff

    Thanks for the great advice. I will def incorporate an IDE in the future; that sounds like a great idea. I guess you understand where im at with wordpress mu and buddypress. Im just trying to grasp how this thing works

    http://codex.wordpress.org is probably the best place to start when trying to figure out what functions perform what tasks for what purposes. Also, think about using an IDE like NetBeans so you can reference functions and trace their usage to get an idea of why you would or wouldn’t want to use a specific function, action, or filter.

    WordPress has a steep learning curve, and it uses an action oriented code structure rather than an object oriented one. There are objects out there, but you rarely interact with them directly, and in the WordPress world interacting with those objects is typically left to plugin developers to tinker with, and best left out of the template files.

    Since you’re just learning, the best advice I can give you is not to edit any “core” file, or rather any file that comes included in WordPress or any plugin that you might use. If something isn’t doing exactly what you want it to, chances are you can adjust it somehow. If you can’t adjust it, make your own plugin and copy/paste the code that isn’t good enough and make your own functions out of them. If someone would have told me that 3 years ago I would have been a much happier person then. :)

    To be honest, there really isn’t one, at least not on paper. I can’t say that WordPress has one either.

    It isn’t really about how the pieces fit, as much as it’s about how you adapt them to fit your needs. This is similar to WordPress, where it started as blogging software but people bend it around backwards to work in other ways.

    Without sounding too much like a broken record, the about page sums up almost all of the functionalities of BP; none of them are more important than the others. It’s up to a good theme designer and code slinger to bring those components out and emphasize their importance to a community website.

    #57845

    Out of the box, BuddyPress is designed for all elements to be created equal. Groups are no more important than friends are no more important than activity are no more important than forums are no more important than directories are no more important than… You get the idea… It’s up to a good theme designer and a great developer to make the functions of BuddyPress pop-out and turn a WordPress site into a meetup.com or linkedin.com.

    All of the elements exist in the core and in external plugins to do it, it just has yet to be done. :)

    Hi there,

    on my fresh install of WordPress mu with Buddypress only the homepage is being displayed. For any other Buddypress page I get an error “Object not found!”

    I put the install on new webspace until we assign our actual domain to the new provider, so the adress is “raw” and thus lengthy:

    http://wp1168531.wp198.webpack.hosteurope.de/www/wordpress-mu/

    Any ideas on what might be the problem here? Any hint would be appreciated!

    (I used the current Buddypress 1.1.3/Wordpress-mu bundle from buddypress.org.)

    Every wordpress theme needs at least a style.css file, bloginfo(‘stylesheet_url’); tells the theme to get it’s style.css file. If you want another one, change the style.css or just add another stylesheet underneath your style.css sheet.

    If your totally new to WordPress, try downloading a theme from the wordpress theme directory on wordpress.org and see how it’s made. Maybe then you’ll have a better understanding on how to do things in wordpress, like calling multiple stylesheets.

    Here’s an example.

    <link href="<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/css/style2.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

    Story:

    Recently, I have time to investigate on my servers memory usage, I found that most of wordpress running site was taken about 20MB to 30MB memory, and the buddypress site is 60MB (WHAO!).

    Actually, it still not yet hit the bottleneck what i seen in daily, becoz they’re not busy site, but somewhat when i try to stress it with 50 concurrent user loading on the BP site, it was unbelievable slow!

    Next:

    Without questioning it, there may hitting some setup issue.

    1. Looking at the vmstat

    It’s quite normal, without all the way high, swap is not in use. Eliminate the memory problem is not server-wide.

    2. Looking at the iostat

    It’s quite normal, without R/W all the time. Eliminate the I/O issue is not server-wide.

    3. Looking at the MySQL CPU usage.

    Stress it with 50 concurrent, monitor with “top”, mysql process still not bumped up yet.

    Eliminate SQL query issue.

    4. PHP itself.

    Memory limit is 300MB, exec time is 180. ZendOptimizer 3.3.9 enabled

    5. Apache

    25 min spare server

    75 max spare server

    256 max client

    Stress it again.. 12 httpd process, they all didn’t bumped up to 100%CPU

    Why?:

    It was PHP code run-time performance, once I switch the Optimizer to eAccelerator, the performance just come back at once.

    WP from 20MB to 10MB

    BP from 60MB to 17MB (WHAO!!!)

    It’s not conclude that ZendOptimizer is suck, but eAccelerator with WP/BP is greater.

    Howto:

    Monitor your WP/BP memory usage:

    Put this in your theme footer.php

    <?php echo memory_get_usage() . “\n”; ?>

    How to install eAccelerator:

    I am thinking about wordpress.com and how many users they might be running. If it's in the thousands than good.

    It is in the multi-millions.

    The bp-default theme is a “child theme” of bp-sn-parent theme, and you copy the bp-default theme and rename the theme folder to e.g. mythemename to make a child theme of your own. It’s not easy. If you have strong CSS foundation and Firebug, this process will take a few hours to tweak if you already have a design in mind.

    https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/ Plus google “create wordpress child themes” or check out ” free BuddyPress child themes”

    Btw, you can download latest BP 1.1.3 already :-)
