    Will this do what you need… it lets you (as admin) directly add members to a group:

    1 – WP Version 3.0, BP version 1.2.5.2
    2 – I cannot locate an .htaccess file anywhere. I did some reading online and found that the .htaccess file doesnt exist unless needed by wordpress for permalinks? If this is the case perhapos the godaddy permissions are not allowing this file to be created? If thats true, I can call godaddy and ask them about this, unless you know how to enable this functionality?
    3 – Theme – Standard BP Theme | Plugins: A lot, but I had tried disabling them and getting the same error. Here is the list: Add Logo to Admin, Akismet (disabled), AWPCP, BP Events (Disabled), BuddyPress, BuddyPress Community Stats, Email Login,
    Fast and Secure Contact Form, Google XML Sitemaps, Jet Event System for BuddyPress (Disabled), Members Only, Secure WordPress,
    SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam, Welcome Pack, WP-Mail-SMTP
    4 – Godaddy, shared, Windows ( ica change off of windows if needed, this is not critical for me)

    Oh man, barking like a dog would have fixed it ;) Oh well…

    1) What versions of WordPress and BuddyPress?
    2) What are the file permissions on .htaccess? Can the webserver write to it? If you do have to change the permissions, then after doing so, go back into WordPress and change the permalink settings to something else. Then set it back to what you wanted the permalink to be and try again (this will re-write the relevant part of the htaccess).
    3) What other plugins are you running? What theme are you using? If it’s custom, what sort of thing do you have in its functions.php?
    4) What type of GoDaddy hosting are you using?

    If you’re using WPMU aka Multisite on GoDaddy, as far as I can tell, you’re in for a lot of trouble :(

    I was looking for the exact same thing as @rossagrant when I found this thread (a basic empty custom tab that admins can add content to). I’ve tried using the Group Extension API per the documentation, but the code seems to be unaware of the API when it gets processed. I get an error saying it doesn’t know what BP_Group_Extension is. If I remove the extends from my class, it falls over at the bp_register_group_extension call.

    I have put the sample code word-for-word in my bp_custom.php file (per @boonebgorges).

    I am a developer, but am new to wordpress/buddypress dev. I’m using latest versions of WP/Buddpress.

    Thanks for any pointers.

    @bennadler The problem with doing it that way (in BuddyPress core) is for installs where /wp-content/ is moved out of the WordPress root and located somewhere else, which is a common configuration for the more security minded folks.

    That fix will work for most everyone else however.

    @dlittle800 Try disabling all plugins and use default settings.

    What version of wordpress and buddypress are you using?

    @hnla You raise an interesting point about plugin development vs core development. Speaking from the point of view of someone who makes a living off of WP and BP-related development, I can note that it’s often quite easy to justify the development of plugin-type functionality for a client. The client’s job needs a specific type of functionality not available in, or appropriate for, the core of BP, so it makes sense for them to pay to have it developed as an add-on. From there it generally takes just a bit of extrapolation and cleanup to turn that add-on into something that can be released as a plugin in the WP repo. (If you’re really lucky, like I am, you have paying clients who actually *encourage* these cleanup and extrapolating steps in plugin development.)

    It’s a bit harder to bill for core-type development, since so much of core development involves extensive bug testing on a wide variety of different server and software configurations – something that isn’t really required for a specific client project.

    Still, this all makes me think about Andy’s awesome post from last year, “Give a Little”: http://apeatling.wordpress.com/2009/09/25/give-a-little/. Now that I’m starting to catch up from my month-long break from BP (honeymoon ftw), I personally am going to start devoting more time to the core project, which I understand broadly as this buddypress.org community as well as the ongoing core development on trac.buddypress.org.

    There are a couple ways to make themes for BuddyPress.

    One way is to make a child theme for bp-default. Instructions can be found here: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/ This is a good option because it’s relatively simple, but it will restrict you to some extent to the general structure of the bp-default theme.

    Another way is to integrate BP features into your own Svelt theme. The BuddyPress Template Pack will help you do that. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/ Basically, it provides the extra templates necessary (on top of your existing WP templates) to run BuddyPress functionality. Follow the Template Pack instructions carefully on a test installation, and see what you think. Once you’ve gone through the Template Pack setup, you can start customizing the way that BP integrates with your theme to your liking – but BPTP will give you a nice headstart.

    I also have the same problem as u Ky, but Im running it on a local server. I also check my email account and there are no whatsoever emails from bp after I finished filling up the form in the registration, do we need to run bp online to test it, although there is an online demo, i need to check it b4 doing it on an actual online site?? BTW, It also shows up in my dashboard’s users.

    Also, I wanted to ask if BP needs to have MU enabled?? Im using it in wordpress 3 (they say it has MU in it also) and buddypress.1.2.5.
    I tried using Buddypress on wordpress 3 (wwithout enabling mu) and it works fine and the only prob was that the registration doesn’t work the way it did like when I register here at BP forum.

    I hope someone can help us with the problem. Thanks to u all.. ^_^V
    Really sorry if this is a super newbie question..

    Right – so I found it but I have to bloody FTP into my server to get to it? WHat the heck is buddypress doing here? If I go into my theme editor in wordpress, the only index.php file I see is some buddypress shenenegins, and not my real front page. Am I going to have to use FTP from now on to edit it?

    What if I want to get rid of buddypress?

    here is the feedback directly received from PollDaddy.com / Automattic:

    BuddyPress should be able to use the Polldaddy WordPress plugin ( https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/polldaddy/ ) but its not officially supported.

    Ok, I just figured out I can disable the blog nav tabs by simply turning them off in the Admin Dashboard, Buddypress, Component Setup screen. Wondering if this will affect the functionality of the plugin BuddyPress Group Wiki from https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-wiki/ . The author seems away. I have diabled the blog tracking and it seems to work, but worried that it might be affecting something I am unfamiliar with.

    Go to settings – permalinks and then choose one from common settings

    You can also use own custom type

    At the most straightforward level of theming you shouldn’t really need to get too involved at a PHP level, creating a child theme will simply allow you to start overwritting or adding your own CSS styles via the style.css sheet in your new theme directory while still using the default themes files and styles – but you perhaps realise that :)

    You will probably need to check that plugin doesn’t have any known issues reported (there should be a group plugin page for it?)
    See you have found and joined that group. I’m afraid I don’t know the current state of play with that plugin, but it may well need updating by the author before it’s fully compatible with all current WP/BP?

    From an earlier comment : this line worries me:
    for example I have Register Globals off via .htaccess on another site I have on that host.
    Register Globals should never be on really – it was and is a very insecure and dangerous thing and PHP changed it’s default status in php.ini years ago. I hope your host doesn’t have that set ‘On’ as default for all their client sites

    OK they fixed it. They had to disable php safe mode to get it working

    Yep safe mode was the issue (essentially it’s what controls open_base )

    File and directory permissions do need to be set correctly and safely. Generally directories need to be 755 and files 644, and I think if you need to be able to edit theme files from the backend/dashboard then those theme files need to be 666. Always avoid 777 as that is world writable and dangerous.
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

    However permissions are only one half of the story, you can have them all set correctly and still not be able to create directories such as /group-avatars/. What is essential is that ownership permissions are correct and for these directories to be writable or for files to be able to be moved to their correct location you must have the correct groups set such as ‘apache’ for the parent wp-content directory.

    Glad it’s solved, I was planning to create an account this morning to have a look but sounds like things are now ok.

    Best place to start – if you haven’t already – is the ‘Creating a child theme’ page

    Re: ETA on BP 1.3 – Jeff has a good estimate for when BP 1.3 is coming out. There’s still quite a bit of work to be done.

    Re: Theme changes in BP 1.3 – Nothing is changing for themes (as of yet).

    The only main change (that I know of so far) in BP 1.3 is how BuddyPress pages are now integrated into regular WordPress pages.

    I have actually done a fresh install of WP to enable the network and so far it seems to work. I have to test it out to see if every user gets their own blog. Not really sure how it all works with BP.

    When I did the fresh install the forums worked. It must have been some sort of error on my part or a conflict as I had done a lot of messing about to get a nicer theme. This time I used a fresh install of WP, activated Network and then used BP default theme. I will have to spend some time learning BP themeing to get a nicer looking theme for my site. That will take some time I am sure.

    Thanks for all your help!

    hnla:

    From what I can see on the backend, it’s set up.

    See screenshot: http://i28.tinypic.com/2nsnij4.jpg

    It says: “bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install

    NOTE: The forums directory will only work if your bbPress tables are in the same database as your WordPress tables. If you are not using an existing bbPress install you can ignore this message.”

    Any ideas? It’s really a weird thing!

    Nope. Although, it’s often good to consult the WordPress codex as well since all of those functions can be used also.

    I’ve also learned to love this piece of code to output what’s being stored in various vars (just replace $bp with the var you want to see):
    echo ”

     ";
    var_dump($bp);
    echo "

    “;
    die;
    (the echo should be the pre html code since this won’t display code right)

    Otherwise, I look at plugins that do similar things to what I want to do to find new code or ask in the forums and sometimes people will answer with the code.
