    WP 3.0.1 would be the best install with BuddyPress 1.2.6 (released this coming weekend).

    But before walking through too much detail, is there a reason you want BuddyPress on a subdomain? Is WordPress installed on the main domain?

    Now, it is possible to install BP and have members create blogs using subdomains .. but maybe you have a different purpose for putting the whole community on the subdomain .. which is also possible.

    There are a growing number of great themes for BuddyPress:

    http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/buddypress-magazine-theme

    http://bp-tricks.com/

    Also, you can take any WP theme and modify it to match the community by using the template pack.

    I have a few questions that seem not to fit any particular category. If the site mods move the post would they please leave me a forwarder so I knbow where to look on my return.

    I am keen to use buddy press in a subdomain of an existing site. I would like to create an online community using buddypress. I would like to allow users to set up their own blogs as well as well as use the functions of buddy press. Do I need to install wordpress MU in the subdomain first or is wordpress mu now redundant ?

    Also can anyone recommend a good magazine / cms theme for use with buddy press, or a theme that showcases a lot of content on the home/landing page.

    Many thanks for your time and patience with me.

    Thanks much for the suggestions. But I tried them and get the same results.
    I deleted the plugin, reverted back to the WordPress Twenty Ten theme, and am working with the initial wordpress installation, that is, I have never posted or created any pages. The problem persists. When I go to edit the About page without actually editing it, just clicking on the “View Page” button. I get this message:

    Forbidden
    You don’t have permission to access /about/ on this server.
    Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache/1.3.33 Server at neighborsconnect.us Port 80

    Same thing if I am on the home page and click on the About in the horizontal menu beneath the header.
    That happens with any permalinks other than the default including the custom /%category%/%postname%/ .
    And the browser window reads” url/About.

    I don’t get any messages when I change the permalinks.

    Why do they find they can’t post anything?

    You need to take a little more time to play and test your install, create a user ensure you have enabled create user blogs in the main options under super admin on the main blog then logged in as that new user create a new blog or register a new user and create a blog at same time., and re read my post above re upping the users capabilities/role, you don’t for a user blog.

    I too have this same exact issue, and I have tried every template known to buddy press and word press, and even tried the wordpress 2010 with the buddy press template pack, without success.

    I am very frustrated by this error :(

    I think the best approach for me is the one with users having their own blogs. I feel that a single (main) blog for everybody would be limited.
    Now, where I’m at is with users that have to go to wp-admin to their wp-profile (which doesn’t seem too bp-like) and find that they can’t post anything.
    My take is that the solution would be to up the level of the user to author. But then, that just gives them rights to post, not to create a blog.

    I guess my question is: now that I have BP and MS installed, what is the normal process for user blogs?

    Thanks!

    Hi there I’m not currently a buddypress user and need to ask a few questions about available functionality before jumping in. I work in web support for an academic department and one of the projects we are involved in deals with a large email list which we were considering changing over to a private community format. the current administrator of the list collects statistics on list members as the board of the research project find it useful. So anyway on to the actual questions.

    Is it easy to add custom fields (tickboxes) to the signup form and automatically add new members to specific groups according to the boxes they tick?
    Is there any statistic reporting that would allow an admin to see how many members of each group we have, how many members in each country, how many members from each university, etc?

    The academic in charge requires this functionality or using buddypress is a no go and well have to go the joomla, drupal or aMember route. Id prefer to use buddypress if possible as I’m a bit of a wordpress evangelist in the university and would like to get a great example of an academic community in buddypress out there for my peers to see.

    Sorry for wittering on so much, Cheers

    BTW, I’m using wordpress 3.0.1. I’m totally stuck. I’ve found some discussions online regarding this error message but they’re way to technical for me to even begin to understand. If there’s a solution can somebody please walk me through it?

    Not utterly sure why.

    Ideally we need to be testing this proposed release candidate as much as possible I’ve run 1.2.6 or more accurately the 1.2 branch on local test installs for a while and it feels solid, if others wish to try on test installs and they can grab a zip from:

    In reply to: Zlib compression

    LPH2005

    Yes, enabling zlib compression by placing code in the header.php of a child theme will improve performance.

    `<?php
    ini_set(’zlib.output_compression’, ‘On’);
    ini_set(’zlib.output_compression_level’, ‘1?);
    ?>`

    Source: WPMU.org

    Additionally, you could enable W3-Total Cache as a plugin and gain other benefits, ie. CDN, Minify, database caching, object caching, browser caching, and user agent groups.

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/w3-total-cache/

    You cannot do both the plugin and the enabling of zlib compression in the header :)

    Right, its private.
    I have to login as admin, and then go to My Account, My Groups, then I see the link to the Students group, click that I then I can finally click the Forum link. I also can use the WP main menu Groups link, and find the Students group. Our members are lazy, they want to hit the main page, one click and they are in the forum (assuming they are logged in).
    I tried the link you provided above and it keeps redirecting me to what I belive is the WP general blog/comment diaglogue. The buddypress install went OK as I can tell. In the WP admin backend I still have the msg:

    “BuddyPress is ready. You’ll need to activate a BuddyPress compatible theme to take advantage of all of the features. We’ve bundled a default theme, but you can always install some other compatible themes or upgrade your existing WordPress theme.”

    Even though I activated the default BP template several times. Possibly something to do with the issue here?

    Go back to a base WordPress install with the default 2010 theme. Then try to set custom permalinks to /%category%/%postname%/

    Does that work? Can you go to categories and posts without problem?

    If not, it is a problem with your server setup for WordPress and nothing to do with BuddyPress. You should fix that problem before attempting to use BuddyPress

    wordpresss but this filter can override the jpeg default (which is 90) `apply_filters( ‘jpeg_quality’, $jpeg_quality, ‘image_resize’ )`

    The image quality of my users’s avatar is very poor. When they use gravatars the quality is much better. It looks like the compression is set too high. Is this set somewhere in Buddypress or WordPress or a server setting?

    #95091

    Alright, concrete feedback now that I’ve played with your features.
    1) Header image is too small. I would like options to have a larger image. I like 275 px
    2) Remove the search from the header. I’d like options to remove that. It’s unneeded for my site.
    3) Title. It’s currently behind the gray bar for the buddypress. Move it down?

    Now, I’m just learning PHP, been using HTML for years. New to WordPress in last year. Can I make the above changes somehow in the style.php? I hate to make changes and break it.

    I like that it uses the custom menus, so much of my information needs to be accessed in it’s categories.

    Thanx for the hard work!

    I eventually built a plugin that allow people to rate forum posts: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-rate-forum-posts/

    Hello,

    I’ve been working on a MU site and I’ve had some issues with the avatars. When I go to change an avatar, I can go in, upload a graphic, and crop it fine. When I click “crop image” it returns an “Your new avatar was uploaded successfully!” and “The new group avatar was uploaded successfully!” message but it doesn’t actually change the avatar.

    It seems like it starts to create the various folders in wp-content for this purpose, but it never actually creates the cropped files.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?

    WP 3.0.1
    BP 1.2.5.2 (from WordPress plugin repos).

    Thanks.

    I used WP-DB-Backup (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/), which can export all the tables specified, to successfully export — and re-import via the phpMyAdmin panel — the whole megillah, including BP-specific data.

    ok, with thanks to http://cleverness.org/2010/08/08/add-user-types-to-wordpress-and-buddypress/ found another starting point:

    Put this in you BuddyPress theme /registration/register.php file:

    `

    User Type A
    User Type B
    User Type C

    `

    Put the following code in your theme’s functions.php:

    `<?php
    /* Add sign-up field to BuddyPress sign-up array*/
    function bp_custom_user_signup_field( $usermeta ) {
    $usermeta = $_POST;

    return $usermeta;
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_signup_usermeta’, ‘bp_custom_user_signup_field’ );

    /* Add field_name from sign-up to usermeta on activation */
    function bp_user_activate_field( $signup ) {

    update_usermeta( $signup, ‘signup_type’, $signup );

    return $signup;
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_core_activate_account’, ‘bp_user_activate_field’ );

    function synchro_wp_usermeta($user_id, $password, $meta) {
    global $bp, $wpdb;

    $type = $meta[signup_type];

    update_usermeta( $user_id, ‘signup_type’, $type );

    }
    add_action( ‘wpmu_activate_user’, ‘synchro_wp_usermeta’, 10, 3);
    `

    This should create selection of account types on the signup page.
    If anyone knows how to update profile-loop.php, so that every account type would have different profile group, please share your opinion.

    thanks.

    It means the plugin will only work for regular WordPress installs but not for WordPress MU or WordPress Multisite.

    Hi

    I intend to build a little website providing an open source application, pretty much like buddpress with support forums, a bug tracking system, svn repo… I can see myself using wordpress + buddypress since it has everything I need to instead of coding the site from the scratch. However, like buddypress, the app also has plugins and skins. I see that in the “Extend” tab, buddypress allows users to download the plugin file and each plugin is actually a group with its forums

    So I would like to ask if there is any plugin that already does the similar thing, creating plugins/files and link them to groups and forums. If there isnt, can somebody please shed light on the approach of doing it (customize buddypress / create a plugin) ?

    These are my active plugins, which one do you think would affect something like this?

    Adrotate

    After the Deadline – Adds a contextual spell, style, and grammar checker to WordPress. Write better and spend less time editing.

    Akismet – checks comments against akismet web sercvice to see if they look like spam

    Autochimp – mailchimp plugin

    Automatic WordPress backup

    BP Disable Activation

    BP Group Managment

    Buddypress – this does have an upgrade to 1.2.5.2 – would this affect things perhaps?

    Buddypress Like

    Buddypress Admin Bar Mods

    Buddypress Rate Forum Posts

    Buddypress Templete Pack

    Configure SMTP

    Google analytics for wordpress

    Invite anyone

    Lab Photobooth

    Lab Photo

    Lap Protect Plugin

    Mailchimp

    Microkids Related Posts

    OEMBED FOR BUDDYPRESS

    Cinocopa viewer

    Theme my Login – which I dont even know if its working

    TinyMCE advanced
