In reply to: permalinks don’t work
Hi @wh82,
why should this be a permalink problem ? Or even a problem ?
BP’s ago links are correct:
your-site/?p=123
Links to blog posts are also correct:your-site/?p=456
And all other links too !For example
your-site/evenementen/bier-xperience/-> use your permalink structure. This is how permalinks work between WP and BP. Here it links to a dynamic content related to Events plugin/page/contentThere is no need to modify the member loop. You just have to add the function into one of the file i mentionned.
By doing this with bp-custom.php, you don’t need to alter your curent theme and by the way, it will also work in case you use another theme.
Hi @mfalk75,
try this snippet – in bp-custom.php or child’s functions.php
function bpfr_truncate_latest_update( $update_content ) { if( 150 < strlen( $update_content ) ) { $update_content = str_replace( '[…]', '', $update_content ); return trim( substr( $update_content, 0, 10 ) ). ' […]'; } else return $update_content; } add_filter( 'bp_get_activity_latest_update_excerpt', 'bpfr_truncate_latest_update' );Tsted as OK with BP 2.5.2
In reply to: Special characters changing: e.g. ä >> u00e4Hi @xrossgg,
which language do you use on your site and which server type (apache, nginx, iis,..)? Also can you tell exactly what you mean by BP names ?
A priori your issue has nothing to do with BuddyPress, but with the way gettext is excuted or how device are handled (charset…) in your language.
In reply to: Update Fail on 2.5.2I can’t help you about confusion. What should be private and what should be public ?
BP handle with members, not with blog privacy. In reply to: Composing bug with new BP v2.5.2Hi,
i tested and cannot confirm the described issue. The link of a name suggestion is normally
http://site-name/members/USERNAME/messages/compose/#and AJAX provide autocomplete CSS and username. Your slug contains the word ‘undefined’. No idea where it cames from… perhaps a js conflict somewhere.Have you checked with different browsers ?
That said, i have some questions:
why do you say (only friends connected) ? By default, you can send a message to any of your friends – they don’t need to be connected. Did you enabled a special setting so you can only communicate with connected members ?The other question is the strange output of Testleher example. The name comes up with additionnal (demo) and (lehrer). Are both member types or similar you added, manually or with a third party plugin ?
If you have a local test install, i would recommand you to install bp-default-data plugin and heavily test the message component, without any other plugins at first, and to activate the other plugins one by one.
Thank you for sharing ! If you want to help out more, read also this topic from @djpaul.
In reply to: Update Fail on 2.5.2Hi,
you need to network activate, even if you have only one subsite and what ever the sub option (sub-dir or sub-domain) is.Mostly, BP is activated on the main site.
your-site.com/ – here sit WordPress and BuddyPress and depending your options:
your-site.com/my_second_blog/(sub-dir)
or
my_second_blog.your-site.com(sub-domain)In reply to: User login doesn´t work properlyOla,
BP doesn’t handle login and has no captcha system. BP offers only a login widget. Do you use it ?
Apparently, some stylesheets aren’t loaded properly.
Deactivate Total cache and bwp-minify and see if it remains.
Once done, enable Twenty Fifteen or Sixteen and give a try.If it works, you have to check the theme AND your child-theme.

In reply to: Insert a join group button in a postit’s always the same for each link ? YES
Groupes is french. If you use your mentionned code, you have to enter the slug used on your site, in your language. If it’s english, try ‘groups‘ instead.
Also this will never work like you expect.
bp_loggedin_user_domain() output gives your-site.com/members/username/groups/And i suppose there is no utility to invite from within a post, a user to join a group of which he’s already member of ?!!!
Can you better explain the relation between post, author and join group ?
Do you mean, an author can invite readers to join (selectively) a group he’s member of ?In reply to: Insert a join group button in a postHi,
you tried the complicated way. 😉 Let’s do it simple & stupid (it’s easter).
Assuming you want to link only to one group, whatever the post.
1) simplest way
Pick up the join group url by hovering over the button on the group directory.
Something likeyour-site.com/groups/group_name/join?_wpnonce=5b8355ee81d
Above the post, write “Join group X” as text and add the url. You’re done !2) lazy way
add a shortcode button on the text editor (not visual), with button text and url.Add both snippet to bp-custom.php or child-theme’s functions.php
In this example, my group page is named groupes and the group name is Horseshoe
Change that to your credentials for$hrefvar (see 1) to get the url).function my_join_button($atts, $content='') { extract(shortcode_atts(array( 'class'=>'post-join-group' // css class name ), $atts)); $href = get_home_url().'/groupes/horseshoe/join?_wpnonce=6b826ee77d'; $output = '<span><a href=" '. $href .' ">Join the Horse group</a></span>'; if ( $content != '' ) { $output = "$class $content"; } return $output; } add_shortcode('join_my_group','my_join_button'); /* Add a shortcode button to html (text) editor */ function add_quicktags() { ?> <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"> QTags.addButton( 'aq_jmg', 'Join my group', '[join_my_group]', '', '', 'Join my group' ); </script> <?php } add_action( 'admin_print_footer_scripts','add_quicktags');In reply to: Some translated texts aren’t shownHallo,
when you’re on the email admin page, you’ll see a link at the top to the repair tool.
Have you used it ? (select the last option to repair emails).
This constant is not explained on the above codex page. Why do you use it ?
define ( ‘BP_IGNORE_DEPRECATED’, true );In reply to: New activity tabHi,
first of, read the doc about activities customization.
If i understand you correctly, you want to allow your users to comment about other users on a extra tab. BP allows activities commenting by default on all activity feeds.
Also “allow other users to comment on a specific user” can be done by simply using @mention.
Why and where an extra tab ? On Activity, group or profile activity tab ? How do you imagine such a tab showing up ?
Please, explain exactly what you want to do. 🙂
Hi,
guess you do it wrong and BuddyPress is not a network.
Please read from here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installation-in-wordpress-multisite/#d-activate-buddypress-in-only-one-of-the-secondary-sites-of-the-network
In reply to: htpasswd wp-adminThat’s a WP question. Read from here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress
You can then use a plugin, like this one.

In reply to: [Resolved] Database schema descriptionHi,
Correct columns name are sender_only and is_deleted.
The recipients table has an is_deleted column, which is used to mark when a user has deleted a given thread. The thread and its messages are only deleted from the db when every participant in the thread has marked is_deleted. (#3912)
sender_only is used to get the sender user_id (#3520)
Hi,
There is, but take in account that registering is done in 2 steps.
1) a user enter some profile information. His account is registered but not activated. This means that at this stage, the user doesn’t really exist.2) To accept it as member, the account must be activated.
In what you want to do, is the fact that you’ll give him the right to upload a picture before activation. This can lead to security issues and the reason why it works (by default) like it does actually. Here two plugins you can use. Read carefully their documentation before install one and take in mind what i said previously.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-upload-avatar-ajax/Hi,
you have to debug your install. It’s probably a theme conflict or a cache issue, related to a content.
Activate a twenty theme and deactivate all your plugins except BuddyPress and clear your cache. Test WP+BP+Theme. If ok, reactivate plugins one by one untill you find a culprit.
Please take advice from here.
In reply to: Member pages won’t display members. Please help!Hi @kory27,
checked your site and found that you haven’t setup correctly BP/WP.
The link to members page you use is:
../gamma.rabbitholeconsulting.com/index.php/activity/Same path error for activities…
The path should be ../gamma.rabbitholeconsulting.com/members/ When you use this path you’ll see your members (actually 2)
I suggest that you read carefully WP’s install documentation.
https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions
and for BuddyPressIn reply to: How to display a “My Profile” pageHi,
which theme do you use ? The blue navigation menu is not a BP reference.
On a first install, you enable BP and all pages related to default activated components are created. These pages are not ordinary pages, but dynamical pages intended for internal use only. A kind of placeholders where BP applies a specific template, depending the context.
Out of the box you have 3 BP pages in BP’s settings: Members (mandatory), Site activities, Groups.
These pages and any other created later if you use other components in addition to defaults, should stay empty, without shortcodes, content or template sssignation, CPT’s or whatever.
Just a page and a title. Anything that should appear on such pages is handled by BP’s templates (bp-themes/bp-legacy/buddypress).
For now, delete the profile page you created and clear it from trash (important).
Profiles are handled by/on the mandatory Members page. No need to create an extra page for them.
Read the install documentation for more details.
Now the user profile link. This is a dynamic link who varies for each user. Something like (your_site/members/USERNAME/profile).
Read here how you can do that.
And as you’re trying to customize BP, read the documentation about child-theme first.
may sound silly, but have you some previous register pages in trash ? If yes, you should delete them permanently. Once done, go to permalinks and register your setting again.
