BuddyPress has no forums. If you use bbPress, you can ask on their support.

Oh okay, so since it’s working from your end, maybe you can help me. Any suggestions on what I can do or should do to get it to work on my end? I’m still running into the same issue of the users not being created, even while I’m still on the Twenty Fifteen theme with only the BuddyPress plug in (now at the 2.3.1 version), the bbPress plug in (now at the 2.5.7 version) and the W3 Total Cache (still at the 0.9.4.1 version) activated. Also, I went and checked the back end again from my hosting plan provider (as well as talked to a representative of my hosting plan service over the phone) and he noticed that there was actually a lot of errors listed for my sites link. The only thing is that the representative said all the other errors listed have been resolved because he doesn’t see any other error messages on those that are listed in the error log. The only one he still sees on there (and I just realized this as well) was this message:

PHP Warning: strstr(): Empty needle in /hermes/bosweb26d/b246/ipg.sjfgraphixcom/myloopnetwork/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-filters.php on line 781

Could this be the reason why the registration page is still not working? Because I never did any changes to that bp-core-filters.php file, I’ve only been working on the post pages and customizing my website theme that I wanted to use from before (which was the Magnus WordPress Theme). But as I was saying before, even though I’m still currently on the Twenty Fifteen theme, I’m still having issues. Please let me know what else I need to do to resolve this. My hosting plan server is iPage (which uses NGINX), running a 5.0 PHP version. I hope this additional information helps out.

Yes, you need to install bbPress in order to have forum functionality within BuddyPress groups.

Okay @henrywright, I’ll check about that error message with that bbPress plugin through their forum.

So I did what you recommended and turned off all the plugins (including the bbPress plugin) where I only have the BuddyPress plugin activated, with me still using the TwentyFifteen theme, went ahead and filled out the registration form once more, and it still took me right back to that registration page with my same information filled out that I did but left the password boxes empty and this is all still showing up each time the page loads up instead of creating the new user profile or redirecting me somewhere else.

Possibly, but it may be unrelated. In order to investigate that particular message, try opening a topic on the bbPress support forum

So as I deactivated all the plugins (except the BuddyPress and bbPress plugin) I noticed this error message from my Dashboard just now about the bbPress plug in. Could that be the one that causing the registration page to not work?

We’re on the same page. I think this is the right direction. I believe relevant filter hooks for bbPress include bbp_get_displayed_user_field( ‘name’ ), bbp_get_current_user_name, etc. Within a hook I can get a name from an XProfile field.

I’ll continue to look in this direction – and I have a lot to learn.

Thank you very much for your time and patience.

I can’t create a profile field for every possible group.

You can create a custom profile field by extending BP_XProfile_Field_Type.
That custom field could pull in the group names for that member and allow them to enter a name per group name.

You can filter the member name by using the filter hook in bp_member_name(), found in:
    buddypress\bp-members\bp-members-template.php

How, when and why you apply that filter is up to you.

The same filter may not work for bbPress, but they probably have something equivalent.

Well, group meta allows meta data to be applied to groups. I’m thinking along the lines of data in the usermeta table which is only consumed by specific groups. This might be expressed as a name/value pair in the profile. So with reference to my original example, a GroupName profile value would include:
    school:Robert
    home:Bobby
    coolGame:Zarcon

The BuddyPress Profile Shortcodes plugin allows for custom fields and related shortcodes to be used. This is much closer to my needs but still not quite there. I can’t create a profile field for every possible group. Ideally there would be a pulldown of groups to which the user belongs, where they can enter the name they wish the use for that group, and the group/name pairs would be displayed in a grid.

Now I’m thinking one of the better user meta plugins could handle that. But I would also need to customize it so that there can only be one WP user with a specific value for a specific group. This is a unique key per group, as some reference to @Bobby can’t apply to more than one person, but the @Bobby in one group can be different from @Bobby in another group.

On the client side, I would then need to modify bbPress to get the user name that’s specifically for the current group, rather than using wp_get_current_user()->display_name or whatever it has there. For example:
    get_user_meta($user_id,’groupName_’.$group_id,true)
    or better
    get_user_meta($user_id,’groupNames’,false)[$group_id]

Actually I’d rather abstract all requests for a user name to a function which can then be replaced with custom code just once. I don’t suppose anyone has already done that, or it’s been proposed as a BP/BBP enhancement?

I’m a noob with coding into WP, haven’t touched BP/bbP, and know little about the APIs, so please bear with me on the syntax and other specifics and focus on the concepts. Thanks.

The more I try to flesh it out above the more it seems possible for me to do this myself. But it would be really helpful if someone has already done it. Or if someone with knowledge in this area can see a more direct line from an exiting plugin to the solution I’m describing.

    Thanks for your time!!

    Update:
I have to add I have a set up of Buddypress/bbpress on another site on same server & sharing same account (Justhost.com) & there is no issue, with those pages. WordPress & ALL used plugins are up-to-date.

    Regards

    Hi
It is over a month since I requested for some assistance, but probably either my case is unusual or has been overseen.

I remembered this, right after writing a newly registered person to login & if they want edit their profile by going o the link top-right. However as mentioned in the original post, ALL these links lead to a page not found error.
As said, I have no link-related errors outside buddypress/bbforum (where they told me the issues are bbpress & not bbforum-related & referred me here).

    Links not working include /members/abc/, /groups/xyz/ & /members/abc/profile/.
As mentioned, I have no idea when the the problem started or what triggered it.

I would appreciated some help as these links not working defeats the purpose of Buddypress.

    Kind regards

    add_post_type_support('forum', array('thumbnail'));

and im trying to do the same with buddypress groups and members

but I had a look in the docs for buddypress and couldn’t find the class/function/method to use

is thier any easy way to do this or am I better to make custom headers for the two pages

thanks guys any insite on this will be much appreciated

I’m experiencing the same issue. After I visit BuddyPress pages and then navigate to any standard or template page, except the homepage, but including the blog, I get a 404. Sometimes a simple refresh will work. Sometimes navigating to a new page will work. Sometimes the issue will not be fixed unless I refresh Permalinks or log-out and log-in again.

    WordPress 4.2.2
    BuddyPress 2.2.3.1
bbPress 2.5.7 (though, the issue continues even when bbPress is deactivated)

This issue was asked on another post that was closed before an answer was provided:
    https://buddypress.org/support/topic/buddypress-iis-and-randomreoccurring-404-errors/

    This post had a resolution:
    https://buddypress.org/support/topic/page-not-found-error-on-static-pages/

I have checked and Mod_Rewrite is enabled through htaccess as defined here:

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /higher/
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /higher/index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
    # END WordPress

Am I missing anything here? This appears to be an issue with BuddyPress. Does anyone have a resolution?

Forums are handled by the bbPress plugin.
Have you tried asking your question on the bbPress support forums?

Groups are a BuddyPress thing are they not?

I am requesting that the Group Forum selector in the Group Forum Settings in BuddyPress be able to support more than one forum NOT forums supporting multiple groups.

Yes, but BuddyPress doesn’t do anything with the bbPress plugin. bbPress integrates itself into BuddyPress. bbPress handles all the BuddyPress group integration.

What you’re requesting should be a bbPress feature.

bbpress ticket 2191 is not really talking about what I am talking about here. They are talking about creating subgroups to go with the forums (which is not what I want to do).

Also the bbPress forums is the first place I looked into and it seems that posts talking about group involvement are being directed to post at the BuddyPress support.
