The fatal error is no longer generated in bbPress 2.5.1, so it looks like something new was introduced in bbPress 2.5.2.

Currently on my staging site I am running bbPress 2.5.1 and buddyPress 1.9.2, but unfortunately even though errors aren’t being generated anymore with this configuration, not all notifications are being displayed either. It looks like friend request notifications are working correctly, but user-to-user message notifications are not working. In addition, I am still getting “blank” notifications from the forum (even though I’m not seeing any fatal errors).

    Any thoughts about next steps?

    Thanks much

I have done some additional investigation and it looks like the problem may be that when someone replies to a topic in a bbPress forum, they are receiving the following error message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_notifications_add_notification() in /nas/wp/www/staging/cbblogers/wp-content/plugins/bbpress/includes/extend/buddypress/notifications.php on line 124

I tried to revert to buddyPress 1.8.1 and bbPress 2.5.2, but unfortunately this didn’t resolve the issue.

Any thoughts about what I should try next?

    Thanks much,

With the actual BBPress +Buddypress releases it is STILL no solution there :/
It´s a bit frustrating, for the “Activity Wall” should be a central function of a group driven community.

Perhaps anyone has a solution meanwhile?

The emails are sent but not received. It is a live site. I am self-hosted. I’m only using 3 plugins, BuddyPress, bbPress, and Members.

Looks like 3 of them are from the same topic (15959). Go into the db and do a search on the activity table for secondary_item_id = 15959. That will give you a link to the topic. Go to it and 1: see if it exists still (probably does) and 2: see if there is something weird about it.

OH. Is bbpress up to date? Maybe there is a bbpress plugin causing issues?

I just tested this on my site. I created a topic as one user. I logged in as another and replied to the top. Notification was sent… no problem. I logged in as administrator and deleted the topic completely. The notification title still showed up, so I doubt deletions are your issue.

Sorry that I’m grabbing at straws. It would help if I was having this problem (glad I’m not) 🙂

    Hi guys !

Most of the publishing stuff is regulated from within WordPress settings.
And allowing blog and forums activity comments is a setting of BuddyPress.

If you don’t want your users writing notices (what’s new ?), the only thing that is published by buddyPress, you can remove the notice form from the template or add a conditionnal if/else for the allowed members…

    @boblebad
, FYI buddypress is not a forum software. The forum plugin is bbPress.

OK, the menu options have disappeared again, on some of my sites, but not all.
If I change this in bbpress.php

    'show_ui'             => current_user_can( 'bbp_topics_admin' ),

    to

    'show_ui' => current_user_can( 'manage_options' ),

I can see the Topics menu. Same if I change the permissions for the Forums and Replies menu.
Why should it be that the Forums, Topics and Replies menus are showing in some of my sites, but not others? I am administrator and keyholder in all of my sites.

Wow. Just installed Buddypress and it complements nicely with BBpress.

    Hi 🙂
Did you enable the messaging system in the first place?
If not you can activate it in : Settings/Buddypress/ and on the first page, check the messaging box

If you enabled this option already you should have a tab in your profil to send private message

[Edit] Wait what do you mean by “forums”? there are no forums on buddypress, are you talking about bbpress?

Hmm, looks like it was a temporary glitch – switching BBPress off and on again made the menus re-appear for site admins … :/

I am having the same problem. After I enter the group name and description and click submit the page goes to the next step but the form does not render.

I have tried deactivating all plugins, using the twenty fourteen theme, and tried dozens of other fixes people have tried, nothing works. Editing groups works fine, only creating a new group does not work. Once my group is created and I can navigate to the groups list, choose the group I just made and administer it fine.

Wordpress 3.8.1, bbPress 2.5.3, Rackspace virtual cloud hosting, dedicated server.

    Please help!

Adding a forum to a group when BuddyPress and bbPress are installed is part of the group creation process,so you – or anyone with Admin level capabilities – would make the choice either when the group is set up or later as part of a review process.

bbPress works without buddypress so it is possible to add forums without installing BuddyPress. You would have to evaluate the features of each plugin that are essential or optional and then make a judgement about the combination.

The easiest way to evaluate the features is to set up a test site and play with different combinations.

Ok I just read modernloopers list of questions so I want to make this as clear as possible. First this problem is not a plugin problem. I disabled and deleted all and it didn’t fix the problem. I also tried a different theme and it didn’t fix the problem so it is not a theme problem. TJ at Buddyboss tried valiantly to figure out the problem to no avail.

Here are the questions that modernlooper wanted answered.

Please try to supply answers to the following questions.

    1. Which version of WordPress are you running? 3.81

    2. Did you install WordPress as a directory or subdomain install? directory

    3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? root

    4. Did you upgrade from a previous version of WordPress? If so, from which version? every one for the last year

    5. Was WordPress functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes

    6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.92

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? Every one for the last year until 1.9 and then it broke. I just went back to my backup and waited. Upgraded to 1.92 and it is still broken. Went through all the normal troubleshooting processes until figuring out it was the notifications that is causing the error.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? If so, which ones?
    Ads Manager WP/BB
    Akismet
    BBpress
    BB Force Profile
    BuddyPress Tiny group chat
    BuddyPress Links
    Easy Album
    Facebook Friends Inviter
    IFlyChat
    Invite Anyone
    Social Login
    Wanguard

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? BuddyBoss

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No, or at least none I am aware of that was put in there personally

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? 2.5.3

    13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files.

[Fri Feb 28 14:41:05 2014] [warn] [client xxx] mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_notifications_toolbar_menu() in /var/www/vhosts/xxx/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-members/bp-members-adminbar.php on line 148, referer: xxx/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=bp-components

    simple-man,
I prefer to run the bbPress forum plugin as it integrates well with Buddypress.Using a forum plugin is a way to get your site members and visitors to engage in the discussion and encourage them to return to the site regularly.

It really depends on the specific community, some prefer to comment on a blog or podcast, others prefer forums. All you can do is set up one forum and invite people to take part and then make a judgement about whether the level of interaction justifies a forum per group or just a forum for certain groups.

Just thought I’d update for anyone else with a similar problem. It has turned out that my Possible Solution #1 above has solved this for me completely. It does behave differently for Administrators (as it should) which caused me some confusion.

Other Plugins I would recommend people look at if they have similar needs to mine:
Theme My Login by Jeff Farthing: integrates user login screens into you Wordpres site/theme.
    Plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/theme-my-login/
    Website: http://www.jfarthing.com/extend/wordpress-plugins/theme-my-login/

Global Hide/Remove Admin Bar Plugin bye Don Fischer: hides the WordPress Toolbar/admin bar
    Plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/global-admin-bar-hide-or-remove/
    Website: http://www.fischercreativemedia.com/plugins/global-hideremove-toolbar-plugin//

Finally bbPress WP Tweaks: so popular I’m not going to leave links.

All these plugins are essential to my gaming clan site: http://ducesoforion.com

Right, and to anyone else reading this, you also have to install bbPress first and make sure to adjust your forum settings to allow BuddyPress groups to have forums.

Rick, glad that we’re clearing up some confusion. To confirm, yes, messaging is totally different than posts. Please read the codex links provided. Also, if you really want to take buddypress for a test drive, set up a development site either on a live site or right on your own computer using http://www.instantwp.com/ and then add some “fake” users and messages, and data using this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-default-data/

And then jump in there and click around like crazy, edit, message, post, and see what happens! this is the best way to really check things out without doing any damage to your own site. Nothing compares to getting your hands dirty and mucking about (in a safe test environment).

This way you can really understand what messaging is, what private messaging is, broadcasting from admin to all members, etc. You can also add/remove plugins and check out their functionality, all in the comfort of your own computer’s hard drive or a test environment set up at a test domain/host that you control/own.

Also, keep in mind that buddypress has many features but you do not have to enable them! for example, there is a feature for groups. But you don’t have to enable it! you can add a forum (using bbPress) but you don’t have to! you can have private messaging so members can send private messages to each other… but, you guessed it, you don’t have to enable this feature. Also, another powerful feature is that you can give members of your site the ability to start their own blogs! this is called “multisite” but you can choose to enable this or not. Same goes for “friend connections” feature… etc.

My suggestion is to start with a very simple starting point and then as your community grows, add features that they require or need. It is a far too common mistake for new buddypress users to just turn everything on at the start.

If you don’t want to restrict your membership in any way or to collect money online from them then you don’t need anything else other than buddypress and wordpress. But look through the membership plugin links I provided to familiarize yourself with them and their features just in case. A few are completely free and still have tonnes of features.

Finally, keep in mind that spam registrations do happen. There are many guides and tools to mitigate spam membership registrations. Here’s a good start:

    Preventing Spammer Registration

Google is your friend for more info on spam fighting.
