Have you tested the plugin with all other plugins other than BP and bbPress deactivated because it works pretty sweet for me and I am not just saying it because it is my plugin? When I say deactivate all but BuddyPress and bbPress it means all and not just the ones you choose to leave activated. This is basic troubleshooting procedures!July 24, 2013 at 4:22 am #168682In reply to: BP Groups and Forums

Participant@faramarz let’s start at the beginning, WP/BP versions? Is this a new installation or did you upgrade from previous BP/WP versions? Where are you hosted?
– Did you follow the steps at https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/ ?
– Try basic troubleshooting procedures like changing to Twenty Twelve theme and deactivating plugins except BuddyPress and bbPress and let me know what happens.
The same setting works just fine on my local XAMPP but it doesn’t work on production server.
How did you install WordPress in production server – via webhost’s one-click install or did you install it manually e.g. FTP? If via webhost’s one-click install then you could encounter some hiccups in your production site see https://codex.buddypress.org/user/before-installing/#system-and-server-requirements

ParticipantI log in to my admin area I see this message “Go Daddy Quick Setup ™
More than 5 years since I used GoDaddy, when you say admin area, are you referring to the GoDaddy admin area or your WP install’s admin area? If in WP install admin area, then there’s an issue. Otherwise, let’s move on.
I am just trying to fix some issues with it before I launch
I don’t know what aspect of your site was developed by the person you hired.
– Note that your avatar at http://www.techknowledgic.com/members/techknowledgic/ is showing up humongous in Chrome.
– And the avatar under freshness in Forums index page is showing too big.
– Why is #.Ue8yX43rw80 appended to your forums slug when I go http://www.techknowledgic.com/forums/ ? strange.
– Let’s test. Create a new Page named Discussions and place the forums shortcode there. Go to Settings > Forums and change archive slug to discussions. Then go to technowldgic.com/discussions/ and check out your forumsGoing back to logging in. I added the bbPress login widget to the sidebar of Twenty Twelve theme and it’s working fine even with BuddyPress activated. What are you using for your users to log in?

Participant@hnla, Hugo, I was able to figure it out! (Jumping up and down!)
I got it to work! Whew!
I did a lot of different things, including installing an older version of bbPress, but I don’t know if that matters. Actually, it probably does, because I was then able to see the forums on the backend again.
What did seem to make a difference was downloading the Members Plugin and changing the roles for Administrator. A bunch of them were not checked, including the role of a Participant. I checked everything and was able to post again. I then updated to the latest version of bbPress.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/members/
I hope that it doesn’t do this again. A major pain! It took me all day to try different things and get it to work.

ParticipantI tried to deactivate bbpress and the forum got deleted and the page which is mywebsite.com/forums became not available and giving 404 error and when I activated it again it worked again and in both cases I can’t see log in or register or anything in the page
and about the second question actually there was someone that was developing my website and he is done now with the website and now I am just trying to fix some issues with it before I launch it so idk if he used GoDaddy or not but when I log in to my admin area I see this message “Go Daddy Quick Setup ™
Build your WordPress site in just a few clicks.Get Started No thanks, I’m good.” and sure with pictures and stuff but this is in general so maybe he didn’t use GoDaddy and also I have an FTP account to upload files or images but I just edit my site by the admin area mywebsite.com/wp-admin
and here is the link of the forum if you wanna check it clearly and see the details http://www.techknowledgic.com/forums

Participant@techknowledgic re your #3 answer – do you mean that even you cannot log in or that only users cannot log in? If you deactivate bbPress, can you/users log in or register?
Going back to basics. Did you by any chance create your WordPress installation via webhost’s script i.e., via GoDaddy WP one-click install? If so, that’s not going to work with BuddyPress, see https://codex.buddypress.org/user/before-installing/

Edit your first post, add [Resolved] to front of title. For your own forums, you can install a cool plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddy-bbpress-support-topic/July 23, 2013 at 8:18 pm #168654aces
ParticipantI just found http://tompenney.com/updating-buddypress-legacy-forums-on-multisite-to-bbpress/ is it any help?
My forums converted ok but there wasn’t much material, however I found the above while trying to solve my messed up menu and theme customisation….

ParticipantHello @notpoppy,
Yes, with Ray’s help, I was able to resolve this. I had posted this problem in this (buddypress.org) and CBOX (commonsinabox.org) forums.
The details can be found in the http://commonsinabox.org/groups/help-support/forum/topic/problems-migrating-old-forums-to-bbpress-2-2/ thread in the CBOX forum. Look for my post dated February 6, 2013 at 5:18 pm and read on.
I did document my successful BP->bb forums migration process. And, I can send it to you as pdf if needed.
Hope this helps and good luck.

For bbPress issue, you’d want to search/google for WP SEO with Custom Post Types

What should I do, Hugo?

ParticipantThanks, Hugo. I do appreciate the dialog, but now there is another issue and I’m at my wits end. I was trying different editors the skinny one that BuddyPress provides now is not so great. All of a sudden, I could not post in forums. I had lost my permissions as an administrator. I was already tired and worked on it for two hours, scouring the forums again, even finding you in the threads I was looking at, and finally got it fixed by using an old bbpress file in your repository and then doing an update as one guy suggested. The forum was back, I could post again, I went to sleep.
Woke up and it’s the same thing. This is really awful. I would love to get involved, volunteer, etc., but I already sit at the computer 10 hours a day for very little income and last night I lost a $100 ad because the site wasn’t working. Hopefully, she will still do it, but now I am really nervous about BuddyPress’s stability. I’ve invested hundreds of hours in the last six months getting this thing to work and now it finally seemed like we were moving forward and this happens. I really am overwhelmed.
Is there a fix that is working to restore admin privileges?

ParticipantJust update the result.
By referencing http://buddydev.com/buddypress/making-wordpress-seo-plugin-compatible-with-buddypress/, BP SEO works well now, even though the BBpress doesn’t work well still.
Anyway, thanks @mercime!

ParticipantThanks for ur reply!
1-I create sitewide forum as written here https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/#a-set-up-sitewide-forums-only but without the bbpress group part because I only want forum and not groups
2-Yes I can create topics now maybe there was something wrong before
3-Yes its enabled and I still can’t register or log in

ParticipantThanks, Hugo. But, is there a way to disable commenting on the Activity Streams without knowing code? That is exactly what I want to do.
If not, can you point me somewhere where there is info on how to do it? There is just too much info to dig through.
The only thing that I have found is in BuddyPress>Settings where it says:
Blog & Forum Comments Allow activity stream commenting on blog and forum postsI unchecked the box and the Reply option still shows on the Activity Streams page and on the Group Home pages.
I worked with FrontPage for years, then with DreamWeaver and have navigated around on many different types of platforms. I do understand a bit of code and I do understand all of the work that goes into all of this. But, I don’t have the confidence to mess with the files and with the constant updates from WordPress, plugins, and theme, I would much prefer to work with settings than to mess with things that might later conflict with future updates, etc. I did a lot of reading and looked at many options before choosing to go with BuddyPress, but I had no idea that it would be so hard. I set up WordPress sites for other people and am a good tweaker, so it’s not like I am totally green. But, there are some major flaws as can be seen by all of the distressed people flooding the forums here and on bbPress.
When I started up in January, everything was a mess with the new updates. The theme I had bought took several months to work out their incompatibilities, various plugins were going through revisions, etc. Now, finally, almost everything seems to work, but our members are totally confused and I just want to make it as simple as possible for them.
So, when you say, “Commenting on items in the activity stream such as forum entries has always had issues and the advice and best practise generally has been to disable commenting on such items in the activity stream in order to avoid this confusion.”, then, yes. I do expect that issues that come up regularly for you developers should be addressed and fixed, especially when it can cause so much confusion for the end users. If it’s an inherent problem, then we should have a button in the settings area where we can turn off that problem.
I also provide loads of free technical assistance to my people, so I do appreciate what all of you do. I believe in the WordPress model, encourage other people to use it, and now have had these months to try to learn BuddyPress. Would I recommend it to other groups and organizations? Not unless they have the money to hire their own code people (which I don’t). Are there better options out there? I ran a Ning group for a couple of years and it did what I want this forum to do: groups with topical discussions. But, I hated how it looked, found it clunky and wanted the freedom that BuddyPress offers in adding on WordPress pages. I tried several other platforms, too. All were a mess. There are some very nice cloud options but they are expensive and I’m doing the “starving artist” routine, so it’s not fun. So, I think BuddyPress has the potential to be the top model, but it’s not there yet, at least not “out of the box”. IMHO
Anyway, if there is a fix for this, please point me the way and I’ll try to make it happen. Thank you.

ParticipantThis is an issue that has arisen it seems with the bp groups extension re-write, it’s been mentioned on bbpress support but the solution or workarounds suggested best not followed, in due course @jjj will doubtless look into it and put a fix in place.

Participantbuddypress and bbpress
Two completely different apps/plugins, bbpress is a forum plugin that integrates with BP groups if desired. Activity streams are designed to try and record and display as much site activity as possible. Commenting on items in the activity stream such as forum entries has always had issues and the advice and best practise generally has been to disable commenting on such items in the activity stream in order to avoid this confusion.I don’t write code and I think that this needs to be set up with backend controls so that people like me can use it. Otherwise, you should have a notice saying that BuddyPress and BBPress are only useful to programmers.
Uttered out of frustration!. Sorry but BP does a lot out of the box but works best when taken and modified to suit the individual site. You always have the option of learning some level of coding ability, stating you don’t want to learn code somewhat limits your ability to use and manage these apps really, it’s not simply a case that they MUST be written for absolute non coders, these are open source apps that represent thousands of hours of work that people get to use for gratis, expecting more than that a little unfair? Also both these two plugins really do do a remarkable job of working out of the box with both teams having put a lot of effort in on that side of things (too much imho)

ParticipantOK I restored the database from the backup but the conversion failed again. It got about as far as “Converting topics 600” then just hung.
I restored from backup again, this time I set the rows limit to 50 and the delay time to 2 seconds. It got to “Converting topics 700” then hung again.
So my question now is why do my attempts to convert the forum keep failing?
I read @johnjamesjacoby’s post here which is similar to the instructions posted above – perhaps he could shed some light?
My set-up is WordPress 3.5.2, BuddyPress 1.8, BBPress 2.3.2

ParticipantThanks for the response!
I did use the shortcode from the bbPress codex, but I did not use the codex instructions for the installs. I used a few videos – one from my theme creator (which ended up being out of date) and some I found on YouTube. I’m a visual person, so I tend to go with video first.
Question:
Could there be an issue using a responsive design with a static front page instead of the WordPress default page?I’ll go over the bbPress codex link above this afternoon, do a clean install and see if that makes a difference.
Appreciate it!

ParticipantHi, thank you for quick answer.
I looked but couldn’t find in which .php file I should make those change.
I am using BuddyPress 1.6.1 as part of a template that I bought from Themeforest, template is called “reviewit”. ReviewIt is built as a BuddyPress/bbPress theme as far as i know.July 21, 2013 at 10:55 pm #168511notpoppy
Participant@aces Thanks very much for the reply.
The “reset forum” option indicates that “data will be removed” which doesn’t sound like what I want – that says to me it’s going to get rid of my data, not restore it to what it was.
The “purge previous import” option looks a bit more likely. But when I tried it I got the “Starting Conversion” message with the loading wheel next to it and it stayed that way for about 15 minutes and gave no indication that anything further was happening.

Alternatively have you tried resetting ( > Tools > Forums )…
