In reply to: GRA4 – BuddyPress plugin or replacement?
Arrogance is Bliss
ParticipantInteresting ‘plugin’ that GRA4.. it is a connection to their website. A little more than phoning home. Your members get included into their website. Wherever their ‘plugin’ is activated, all the members show up on all the other websites. They have a plugin for oscommerce, phpbb and wordpress and they are working on a plugin for drupal. All members are gathered to their website and you have NO admin privileges. You have NO control over the content on the website and I don’t know for sure, but I think there could be some major security (and privacy) concerns for all of your website members.
They don’t tell you straight out that you aren’t adding functionality to your WordPress website, they are providing a portal to their website, which shows up on your website making it appear like it’s your website. Quite crafty. – A FACADE-
They are using ‘elgg’ social software on their server. They authenticate using cookies and they secretly provide your website with a ‘secret key’ and their coding changes the .htaccess rewrites for your website to redirect your members to their website. The page they tell you to add, is the same name as the directory of their plugin and the rewrite for permalinks makes it appear that your members are looking at a page, but they are looking at another website. The shortcode they tell you to put on the page you create for their plugin calls the function that imports the data from their website to display on that page. So, basically.. it’s an interface with their website gra4.com. Their website shows up on an ip address in the United States, but they are Russian (no prejudice, just an observation), to share the information. Part of their coding calls a another website virturossiya.org/c (which shows up as ‘GRA4SetConfigValue(‘GRA4_remote_url’… in one of the files. That website also shows up on an ip in the USA, but the page title is in Russian and the favicon is a red star. (looking at that last domain name I can see ‘virtual russia’).
In conclusion, from my perspective, it’s a scam. You do NOT get your own social network with their ‘plugin’, you get to include your members into their website, without your members knowing it.. I don’t think that would be consistent with the spirit of WordPress or BuddyPress. I would stick with BuddyPress or one of the other true WordPress plugins that provide social networking within WordPress, unless you want to find yourself answering questions you have no answer for sometime in the future.. Let alone the risk of your own website and hosting information somehow being hacked. The concern I have is, if they are being honest, why hide all of this from WordPress users of their plugin? With their obvious ability to rewrite and redirect, who knows (really) where your website and member information is going?
If they do get back into the WordPress Repository, I would really be careful of these people. Always check to see if a plugin requires a connection with remote servers before you consider using a plugin.

Member@shaista here is the link to that conversation: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/installing-buddypress/forum/topic/buddypress-1-6-multisite-help/
In my case, I had to add ( ‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’, $blog_id ); with “2” replacing “$blog_id”. Hope that helps.I’m running out of time for a solution so I hope one is found soon. I’ve been building an online class website and classes start in about a week.

ParticipantThere’s a WordPress app that allows iPhone uploads for blogs. Just the straight WordPress app in the store. But you can’t do it via Buddy. You just have to connect your blog to the app and it works out. You have to enable atom publishing.

Member@ mercime
Ok I followed your steps however there is one slight issue.
Steps #1-4 works fine. However Im unable to sync it with buddypress.According to this thread: https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-integration-where-is-bb-config-php-in-bbpress-v-2-0-2/
If that thread is right… I wont be able to because 2.x versions of bbpress dont use bb-config.php.
Of course there is no way to install a 1x series of bbpress in wordpress (or at least I couldnt figure out how its possible).my bbpress works great, so… am I basically sol until the Buddypress people do the merging expected in v1.7?
EDIT: As explained, I have installed Buddypress but since I couldnt figure out how to integrate the existing bbpress install I turned off the forums option inside buddypress (I didnt want any conflicts). my BBpress forum still works fine.
After digging around for a while I noticed a few things.
1) If I open up a user profile in Buddypress I can see the topics the user created in the forum.
2) If I create a group it asks me if I want to create a forum for that group. In my phpbb3 forum I created forums for groups of people. After converting over to bbpress I have a forum for a ‘group of people’. When creating the group I did NOT create a forum for the group because I didnt want it to overwrite or mess up the existing forum in bbpress (the old forum and new group name are the same).
Without syncing buddypress and bbpress (as I explained above), is there anyway to link a group with an existing forum?
Ideally I want group forums, I just dont want to loose any posts already existing.August 11, 2012 at 9:54 pm #139160saukgp

Participant@smartmwp do provide more information about your installation like — Single or Multisite? Custom theme or have you tried changing to bp-default to see if issue is corrected? Plugins installed? etc.

Keymaster1. Yes, we changed this to make BuddyPress compatible with more servers. To change this WordPress email address, try a plugin like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/send-from/ or ask on the WordPress.org forums for other recommendations.
2. What theme (and version of the theme) are you using? What version was this working on? i.e. what version did you upgrade from.
3. 1.6 uses the WordPress core toolbar, rather than BuddyPress’ old toolbar. The WordPress logo is added to the bar by WordPress itself.

@mercime
Participant– re BP Gallery – if you have any issues with the plugin, then bring it to BuddyDev.com forums so @sbrajesh can assist you
– re BP Album – if you need assistance with this plugin, then do post it in their forums which the plugin devs check regularly at https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-album/forum/

August 11, 2012 at 10:28 am #139131In reply to: functions.php or bp-custom.php?
Paul Wong-Gibbs
Keymasterbp-custom.php is loaded before most of BuddyPress is loaded, and a theme’s functions.php is loaded later in a process. Functions.php is also specific to a theme, and bp-custom.php isn’t.

Participant@identity1998 – I checked and I am also having problems with the search.
I am using Custom Community Pro. I think I will contact them and ask if they can have a look at the problems.

MemberTaking a second look, it appears as if all the buddypress pages are blank. Activity, Groups, and Members are all just blank pages. Register doesn;t even appear in the page navigation. The menu bar is showing all of the BP menu items – but they all give me a 404.

MemberBuddypress 1.6, using the BuddyPress Default theme. The user is shown as banned in the Admin > Members list. The user cannot create forum topics, forum replies, or write new updates in the group. In a green box underneath the group description it states “You have been banned from this group.” when that user visits the group. It’s a public group. The banned user can still read everything, and he can reply to activity feed entries.
This was possible on previous versions of buddypress (1.5.6 i think) and I was wiping and re-installing wordpress and buddypress on two different servers (local and online) both producing the same results with fresh installs. I really had nothing to do that day… My site ended up only using private groups and I thought this was intended so I didnt mention it before.

ParticipantYes, there does seem to be a few issues.
While buddypress is claiming that there isn’t a need to network activate, making it work on a subsite doesn’t seem to be as easy as one might expect. I haven’t figured out how to get past the permissions thing on subsite, but network activating in the base site also doesn’t seem to connect to the subsites. They don’t seem to know buddypress is activated. Kind of frustrating, but when someone shares the secrets with the rest of us, it will be quite a nice install, I presume..Also, with themes that are compatible with v1.56, are they still compatible with 1.6? Or do the new files need to be moved to the theme directory to make everything work right? I ask these questions because of the problem I seem to be having with not being able to find buddypress profile from the subsites.. I am being directed to the WordPress profile, not buddypress, from the subsites.

Keymaster@joshualedetnet (and others having the issue) – Could you help us to debug by putting the following into your bp-custom.php or theme’s functions.php file?
`add_filter( ‘bp_do_redirect_canonical’, ‘__return_false’ );`
And then let us know whether the redirect problem stops. (If it does, you’re welcome to leave that line in there until there’s a fix – it simply disables a new canonical URL feature.)
