dude
Memberi had tons of trouble with this.
Don’t know if you tried these methods but they worked for me..
I used two plugins:
Mail From and WP-Mail-SMTP
with mail from I had to create a myname@mydomain in the email section of cpanel because my site was stuck in default ‘noreply@mydomain.com’
It kinda splits your email send outs as: username @example.com
I chose: eMail Address admin@mydomain.co.uk as the Current address WordPress is sending mail fromWith the other plugin I noticed one major edit solved the whole issue for me in terms of my site sending out the registry email verifications.
First I chose to send out the emails with my newly created email address (made in cpanel)
then I checked the: Send all WordPress emails via SMTP box
then I chose: SMTP Host = localhost
then this was the was crunch that seemed to make it work..I changed the default SMPT port from 25 to 26 and it worked !
I also chose: Authentication No: Do not use SMTP authentication.
sent a ‘test’ email out to a test account on my site and all was ok.I don’t know if this will work for you..but all I can say is it worked for me so no harm in trying.
This issue took me 3 weeks to solve !!

MemberI took a different approach:
1)Buddypress general settings- rename the “Full Name Filed” to nothing… clear it out and save. This will remove the label from the reg page.
2) Hide the full name field on the registration page with css.
3) Add JS to mirror typed characters from username field into full name field
requires jquery 1.4.2
`#field_1 {visibility:hidden;}
function sync()
{
var n1 = document.getElementById(‘signup_username’);
var n2 = document.getElementById(‘field_1’);
n2.value = n1.value;
}`
Call it appropriately:
`<input type="text" name="signup_username" onkeyup="sync()" id="signup_username" value="” />
`Seems to be working pretty good so far.

ParticipantI’m actually joshDjenks on Twitter – no account set up yet for the Hub. I’m not terribly active either.
Kudos on the BP Labs plugin btw! Quick admin got me thinking about other ways to streamline navigation and reduce page calls. The biggest time saver in my mind would be adding ajax to the item nav/subnav in profiles. I tinkered with it last night – still some css clean up to do but it works just fine so far. http://www.arhistoryhub.com/members/joshjenkins

Participant@anesthetist As you’ll note this thread is marked as ‘Resolved’ this means that in all likely hood people are not going to respond to it.
It is general practice not to tag onto posts but to start a new one for your issue,, explain exactly what you have done, stages reached, the files manually edited as is necessary etc.
.htaccess lives in the root web directory of your domain.

ParticipantOn a cursory glance, yes you could work BP into your WP site, BP is simply a plugin for WP that extends WP to include social media aspects such as user profiles, site wide activity streams, user groups. You may want to install plugins such as BP Album+ to handle media , cubepoints for BP, or perhaps Achievements.
You’re best off setting up a test install and working BP into your theme using the template pack plugin to help integrate BP files into your child theme – a guide on this is found in the BP codex, then run through the various features of your existing site and see whether they function as is as WP aspects or whether you need to use more specific BP plugins that are BP aware, theres a good list of available plugins under the ‘Extend’ tab

MemberHi,
thanks a lot; now it works!
I got rid of that second name by editing that field in the database (making it no longer required).Now capital letters are possible, too: I had to change line 278 of the bp-core-signup.php from preg_match( “/[a-z0-9]+/”, $user_name, $maybe ); to preg_match( “/[a-zA-Z0-9]+/”, $user_name, $maybe );
If someone is interested in the details: I just wrote a tutorial on this topic (it’s in German, but you’ll see the code): http://neontrauma.de/wordpress/buddypress-mit-nur-einem-usernamen-samt-grossbuchstaben.php

couple of old classic links there
@andrewbuzz the table aspect for layout has been mentioned, but I really need to just labour a point, tables for layout are absolutely not the way to markup pages, it’s taken a few years to get everyone on board with this but nowadays you wil no one creating layouts this way. I suspect that you have ‘designed’ your layout in PS? and then have used a tool such as DW? to construct a layout.I would urge you to stop and reconsider before you go too much further, table layouts are highly inflexible, next to impossible to re-factor (one of the main points with CSS-P ) not search engine friendly and a whole heap of other reasons.
Are you preparing this layout for a client or is this an existing layout the client has come to you with?
July 2, 2011 at 3:54 pm #115566@mercime
ParticipantJust surprised that you’re using tables for your layout except the BuddyPress area. Moving on, it’s all then a matter of adding styles to your BuddyPress components – floating images and lists.

MemberI am ‘getting stuck in’, you’ll notice in my posts I’ve at least tried to have a go myself !
theres so many files, and so many are similar in name but unless I ask someone who has experience with these things I could end up ruining my site.
If you take a look at this link: http://swapbbm.com/ you’ll see ‘exactly’ what it is I’m trying to achieve and that is to display a similar notice in the activity stream: ‘please login or register to view the bb pins’ .
so this would be done in the ‘activity’ files you previously mentioned right ?
** update **
I tried on about 4 attempts to create the wrapper on that page and 2 out of 4 attempts in various different places made this come up on my site:-
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ELSE in /home2/pinhitco/public_html/londonbbmpinswapco/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/activity-loop.php on line 37
I tried

ParticipantThose are valid points. I also tend to open off-site links in new tabs (especially when researching, scrounging or learning new code bits
), so I can jump between sites without losing track of previously visited stuff. But, as you say, members of older generations (like my step-mother), or those not-too-tech-savvy (like my employer) can get confused when windows open automatically and overlap each other.It’s also true that this should be left to the user to decide. I agree, if links are set to open in new windows/tabs, this MUST be indicated to the user with a text message or icon.

ParticipantTry using this plugin https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-usernames-only/ which displays the username rather than the display name, this helps with using “@” replies and mentions.
I use this and adapted my profile pages to look like this: http://www.yeahhackney.com/members/ewebber/

Participant@gregfielding have you considered using p2 on a community blog where members can submit those community updates you need? In a sense it could serve as an activity stream for posts. and think of all you could do with wp posts that you can’t with activity stream entries.

ParticipantThe s2member plugin will do everything you want, and a whole LOT more too! Watch out though, you can easily get lost in all the features and options, so take it slow and follow the startup instructions closely. But everything is very well documented, and there’s a pretty good help forum available if you get stuck.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/s2member/There is also a new bridge plugin for s2member (or any other membership plugin) that enables you and your users to create private profiles that become visible to certain membership levels. It automatically inserts an “Upgrade” link in member profiles that displays to users who don’t yet have view permissions.

ParticipantCheck out this thread. You can adapt the code provided for xprofile fields by simply replacing the ul class with `table.profile-fields`.
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/make-drop-down-menu-links-open-in-new-page/There are also several plugins that might get the job done too, but you may have to fiddle with them. Search the wp repo for “Open external links in a new window” for a few examples.
