In reply to: phpbb3 conversion to buddypress forums
still giving
Participant@kriski
“Has anyone managed successfully convert/transfer from phpbb3 forum into buddypress?”
Why would you want to? phpBB3 is a far more mature discussion forum with a large and vigor development community.
For the lack of real integration between the various parts, would not WPMU/phpBB3 integration, as per WP-United, be a better route to go down?

MemberThank you DJPaul.
I need to upgrade from WP 2.9.2 to WPMU / WP 3.0 in an overnight action and without the risk of loosing BuddyPress data.
That’s why the tests.

ParticipantYes, it is “by design” that BBpress/BP Forums cannot do all the things normal users would expect from a forum.
I am not sure what design that is but it is a little depressing.
BBpress was already the prematurely born poor cousin of the Automattic stable before it was integrated into Buddypress.
I’ve asking to see the roadmap of where ever this is all going but it does not seem that, despite the corporate funding now, there is one.
And I think it is just all too much work for just one developer and open sourcers.
Against my wishes, I’ve pretty much given up hoping and would rather see phpBB3 integrated with WPMU, as per http://www.wp-united.com. With WP3 coming up soon … they may be hope on the horizon.
Sorry to be so honest.

KeymasterBuddyPress 1.2.2.1 isn’t built or tested for compatibility with WP 3.0-Alpha yet; I suspect it won’t until WP 3.0 gets to Beta.

Member@MrMaz Or we can just wait until WP 3.0 comes out ( http://wpengineer.com/wordpress-3-multisite-settings/ ) since it will have multisite capabilities and it will create a blogs.dir subfolder in wp-content which is compatible with the plugin. But then again I’m not sure how long it will take for v3.0 to hit when we’re currently at v2.9.2.

ParticipantI was up late trying to implement this myself using jquery, when I stumbled across Mark it up (http://markitup.jaysalvat.com/). You can do some creative coding, implement the jquery and tell it to apply it site wide, and BAM, you and your users have instant image upload, auto bold and italics, among other great features. Just makes buddypress work more like big boys.
You can see my implementation on my site, OfficialManCard.com

ParticipantI use the bpGroups plugins (“forums” subdomain of the BP site) but the plug-in required some updating to get everything working smooth (activity notifications, public/private/hidden/ready only stuff)
@nuprn1, what did you modify? I noticed that posts in bbpress don’t show up on the activity notifications, and the public/private/hidden stuff doesn’t seem to work either…
Also, the plugin is looking for an Authorized Buddypress Username, or “the user that BuddyPress uses to access bbPress.” Is there actually still a user, or was that part of the older BP/bbpress integration method?

ParticipantActually I was looking for a simple snippet to show who’s online.
Unless I’m mistaken, the ‘Who’s Online Avatars’ widget is part of the default Buddypress install.

ParticipantThings seem to be working, Boone, but the Big Hope that I had, inlining, isn’t working for me, still, sadly.
Couple of use-case notes that I hope will help you wrangle stuff:
1) Editing a comment with an attachment (image, in this case) shows browse buttons to add new attachments, but no sign of the image already attached before the Edit.
2) Editing a comment and trying to add another attachment doesn’t actually add the new one.
I’m doing this on a localhost.localdomain XAMMP install — don’t think that should matter, but just in case, I thought I’d mention.
kriskl, the very latest versions of this and the Forum Extras plugin are working for me in tandem (or at least, not broken other than what I mention above). Quote works fine — don’t have any other the other subplugins enabled other than the wrapper.

ParticipantCouple questions about the Quote plugin:
1) Hitting the ‘Quote’ button populates the textarea with the text of the entire post being quoted, rather than just selected text. Is that the intended functionality?
2) Quoting a post that already quotes something (the much-feared QUOTE PYRAMID, or at least the beginning of one) doesn’t work (it populates the [cite] but not the [blockquote])… again wondering if that’s by design or not.

ParticipantFound the conflict I mentioned earlier — it was Boone’s old Forum Attachments for Buddypress (at version 0.1). The latest version (0.2.2) works fine, and all is well (so far).
Thanks to both of you!

ParticipantI am getting the curl_multi_init.dll error on every page where the twitter checkbox should appear.
It is hosing the app so much that the buddypress admin bar does not show after the error.
Can someone post their hosting setup and perhaps what php extensions are being loaded so I can compare to see if that might be the issue.

ParticipantErwin it’s all good man! I think it’s a testament to the quality of your work that your plugin is so widely used. I will say again this feature is essential component of a community site and if we all depended on this feature perhaps adding it to BuddyPress core should be discussed at some point. Me personally I think it’s more important the a photo album. Just my 2 cents
March 23, 2010 at 2:24 am #69761In reply to: Default role for new users within BuddyPress?

KeymasterA user should be able to post to their activity stream even at the lowest WP role.
testbp.org is an example of that.

KeymasterAhh I see what you’re doing there!
I requested a new action before the topics loop so something like a group listings loop can go right there:

MemberOne more test.
1- WordPress 2.9.2
a) New dir at wp-content > blogs.dir
b) Settings > Miscellaneous > Set uploads to blogs.dir and wrote the full uploads URL path
2- BuddyPress installation
a) Avatars didn’t show
b) Changed line 389 of bp-core-avatars.php to:
if ( !$path = get_option( ‘upload_path’ ) )
$path = WP_CONTENT_DIR . ‘/blogs.dir’;
else
$path = ABSPATH . $path;
c) It worked! At this point it was possible to upload, preview and crop the images.
3-Upgrade to WP 3.0 alpha using the Beta Tester plugin > Bleeding edge nightlies
a) The avatars have disappeared and in its place there’s the text “Avatar Image” and “Member Avatar”
b) No preview on crop

ParticipantI made a little progress on a forums index listing
then the Forums page sub-nav tabs would look like this:
the only action that will add something to the forums directory component subnav is
<?php do_action( 'bp_forums_directory_group_types' ) ?>which forces use of the ajaxbp_has_forum_topics( bp_ajax_querystring( 'forums' ) )so i decided to hook on
<?php do_action( 'bp_directory_forums_content' ) ?>ordo_action( 'bp_after_directory_forums_list' )both below the topic listings. the first action will display the forum index on all subnav ajax tabs (all topics, my topics, and tabs) the later will only display on the forums directory page until a subnav tab is clicked.http://files.etiviti.com/misc/buddypress/bp-forum-extras-forum-index.gif
