KeymasterSweet! Definitely need this! Thanks JJJ!
JJJ: Can I recommend changing the word “slug” to “url”? The word “slug” doesn’t really make sense to the end-user.

EDIT: Just tried installing this on WPMU 2.8.5.2 / BP 1.1.2, got this error when activating:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM in /var/www/example.com/wp-content/plugins/bp-edit-group-slug/bp-groupslugs.php on line 195I see you’ve left in this bit of code for a future version, so I’ve just commented this out for now.

ParticipantSome aspects of the new theme break in IE6 (yuck). Should I open tickets or should we consider IE6 no longer supported? Unfortunately I still have a reasonable number of IE6 users.

Participant“The new bp-default theme will actually be a parent theme.”
Just downloaded trunk-r2184. I was wondering about that when I opened the folder. Thank you Andy for this impressive work as always.

ParticipantI have just done a cursory overview of the new theme but the “fact that activities drive everything” is a big shift and would hinder me from using the new theme especially if the activities panel can’t be widgetized.
The goal of my site is to have group(what i am calling projects) be the focal point, no blogs at all. I will continue to look at the new theme and see if I can mod it to my needs.
Is there a list of other features that are coming out with 1.2?
Thanks,

ParticipantYes, my Privacy Component works just as I described. It is an advanced beta available for testing. See this thread for more details: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-privacy-component-an-update/page/3#post-30574
I wouldn’t give users the option to set it to friends only. Or at least… I would like the site admin to have the ability to disable that option.
In my Privacy Component, the site admin can choose to disable this feature.
But, to get back on topic, I agree that the best solution is the one that requires the brunt of the filtering to be accomplished through invisible, behind-the-scenes techniques. Requiring users to prove that they are members and not bots should not be the first line of defense. I think it is okay, even necessary for registration purposes. But that is a one time occurrence. After that, the system should do more of the policing.
Concerning your second link above, perhaps we could create a new CAPTCHA that could harness the collective intelligence of site members to solve the Unified Field theory.

ParticipantThat would be logical David.. Can’t speak for Andy ofcourse but it would make sense to built upon the new theme with all the performance and theme developer friendly .css layouts.. It would mean a better experience for my users and less trouble for me updating my theme

Participantwell, can you explain form which version you upgraded.
there have been changes in the database schema for activity as far as I remember in bp 1.1(just 1 table now).So that may be a reason.
have a look here
https://buddypress.org/blog/news/buddypress-1-1-released/
and search the forum, you will see similar things already discussed.

ParticipantSo if one were to use a child that simply tweaks a parent via CSS (as well as probably a header and footer override)… it would probably make the most sense to use the NEW theme as your parent since I assume the classic theme will… at some point… NOT be kept as up-to-date with all the latest changes?

If you’ve already created a BuddyPress theme using the old system don’t worry, these themes will continue to work for at least the next couple of versions. You should find it fairly simple to convert your themes to the new system. The old default themes only took a few hours to convert over.
So apparently I can keep my old theme. Do you know how? Is it hard?
Thank you in advance.

I think a very good start is that you can only message your friends. Thought that this would be already ths case, that is why I wondered how we could get spammed?
See this discussion: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/compose-message-send-to-username
Basically, the autocomplete message recipient list only autofills from your friends list. However, anyone can message any other individual via the “Send Message” button on user’s profile screen. All that is needed for a user to send a PM is that they have a member account and that they are logged in to the system.
On a related note, my Privacy Component does have an option to filter out the “Send Message” button, making it only visible to those you choose.

KeymasterThere’s a fix for this “brute force” method of plugin deactivation in the trunk of WPMU2.9, so a fix is on the way if you don’t have phpMyAdmin access.

KeymasterThis is the way it works at the moment. If you want it changed, create an enhancement ticket suggestion on https://trac.buddypress.org/ using the username/password which you use for this site.
At the minimum, yes, that error message ought to be improved.
I’m marking this thread as ‘not a support issue’ as this is working the way things should be working at the moment.

ParticipantHi Andy, I think you are incorrect there. Spammers like to send spam. I am sure you get some in your email?
What is easier to get into a nice big community (without having to create a blog) and easily (?) send spam PM to all members of the community? You don’t even have to infect computers, as you can use the internal messaging system and you know most users will get the message as an email as well.
Hey, it saves them from email harvesting or buying ‘5 billion email addreses’ dbases as the community has already done this.
So, no, apparently (and this example that started this topic has proven this), it is possible on BuddyPress and it serves the spammers purpose, so disabling blog registration will not stop this. You can disable blog and user registration, but it might be hard to start a community that way..
Cheers, Harry

ParticipantYeah, but that’s not gonna work with buddypress. You need to specify that your calling a javascript function. Buddypress just sees those things as links. I doubt this is gonna work with buddypress at all if you call to the functions like that. I’m amazed it worked with wordpress.
Edit: You added the earlier code to the text? Your supposed to put it in your header either in a external javascript file or just between script tags.
Xevo
ParticipantTry this, and put rel=”fancybox” on your links. I doubt the script is ever gonna work like that with buddypress.

ParticipantI’m using buddypress 1.13. Here is the url: http://socialpress.co.za. I’ve read everywhere to disable the plugins and I have tried that and re enabled them. Same 404 error page. I have even tried other themes but it still won’t work.
I also can’t get the RSS site wide activity feed to work: http://socialpress.co.za/activity/feed
I had to add extra chars to that URL: http://socialpress.co.za/friends/activity/feed and then it works but I know this is not the best solution and for some reason when I add the extra chars aka “friends” to the delete link http://socialpress.co.za/friends/activity/delete/123?_wpnonce=30864bbwe2, it only works for the administrator and not always.
Back to the topic, everywhere on the site where there is a “delete” button next to the content when clicked gives the 404 page error if I leave the link as it came with BB.

Participanthi
well here is the modified plugin. It will show the avatar from buddypress and the link will be the name of the user with the profile link.
http://buddydev.com/http//buddydev.com/public-download/sidebar-login.zip
I will advise to do one thing though.
after installing plugin go to Tools->Sidebar Login
and from the Logged in links text box, remove the line which says wp-admin/profile.php
This should work perfect then.
If you get any problem, please let me know. I will be glad to assist further
