Hi there,
I’m considering using BuddyPress for a fairly complicated social networking site and can’t find anywhere specific information about its capabilities. I have installed it and been playing around trying to make my own theme very slowly, but before I get too far I want to check that I will be able to do what I want with it.
1. Can you make several different ‘types’ of users who can see different amounts of information, like limited profiles who can’t do the same thing as people who have updated to full profiles?
2. Can you have a messaging system that can message everyone in a specific group or attending an event
3. What is the easiest way to completely transform the look of your BP site for a beginner? Does it require jumping between the Dashboard and coding the new theme files? I am a web designer with some experience using HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL but not quite to this extent, will I just have to read a lot of code to slowly understand it and change it up?Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve seen this discussed here but no real definite explanation of how this site (buddypress.org) has set it up so that activity/groups/members are all in a “folder” but it seems like it’d be a nice feature to be able to implement on sites (obviously since it’s working well here).
Does anyone know a definitive way of doing this that won’t screw things up? The code `define ( ‘BP_ACTIVITY_SLUG’, ‘folder/activity’ );` does not seem to work.
I am working on a multisite that features a BP theme as the primary site at http://www.domain1.com. I need to hide the site while I’m developing it, so I want to use a placeholder theme as the primary site and temporarily move the BP site to a secondary site at http://www.domain1.com/main until the whole project is done. Then, I would like to move the BP site back to the primary position. Is there a simple way to do this? Even after I generate content? Any help appreciated.

I would like people to be able to respond to specific content in posts, which will have a standard layout. For example, lets say this is about buildings and every post for a building has the same sections (history, engineering, form, etc). At the bottom of a given post, I want users to be able to comment or start a discussion forum on a specific element about the building in the post. Is it possible to customize buddypress to do this? If so, any thoughts on how? Can I assign forums to posts instead of groups? Alternatively, is there a plugin to add a list of items with checkboxes or a drop down menu so when someone makes a comment they indicate what they are commenting on?

We use buddypress for collaboration at work. We are a nonprofit who serve the poorest communities in Dallas. We take tons of calls from people needing assistance on various areas. Buddypress allows us to share ideas and comment about the ongoings of our mission.
On our phone system, If someone misses a call (it’s forwarded to a google voice number that rings multiple people) we want the email google voice creates to create a topic in the buddypress forum so we can follow up. Right now, it creates posts on WordPress, which doesn’t have the flexibility of a forum post. Any ideas?I have a site where I really don’t want other members to have the capability of “reaching out” to all the other members… Forum boards are okay… But I don’t want anyone to be able to go in and send everyone a message individually. I’m in a business where clients can be stolen. I saw something that said BuddyPress has a “Member Directory.” Can this be disabled if it’s on there, and if it is, is it sort of going against installing buddypress at all? I just don’t want people having the capability of contacting everyone else. In the forums I can just delete an inappropriate post. But if they can just mass email or email members 1 at a time, I’d like to avoid that. Thanks!!!
I have just read this article and have been very excited about it. I searched for WP Symposium on the Buddypress forum and found nothing.
I think this could be interesting for others as well

I’m wondering what would be a simple way to have the registration link go to the regular WP registration form, rather than the BuddyPress page?I’ve customized the registration process using the following plugins:
– Janrain Engage
– Register Plus Redux
– Theme My LoginSeems to work OK so far (though there are some very minor wrinkles to iron out). That is to say that users who are created via Janrain or the WP register page can still login and update their profiles when a BuddyPress theme is enabled.
I just want the Login and Register links to go to the wp-login.php version, not redirect to the BP version. Thanks!Topic: How To List 100 Forum Topics
Hi Guys
I would like to create a series of separate forum pages that list the latest topics from particular groups of forums.
I would like to list 100 topics or perhaps 50, but cant get the code to list more than 20.

ive pased it into a page template and the pagination doesn’t seem to work either
