It’s only a matter of switching up a few functions and hooks to relocate where the menus are, so it can satisfy just about anyone’s needs.

If you have other plugins that rely on BuddyPress being installed, then this is a bigger project for you than just upgrading BP. Since a lot of the functions and their locations have changed from 1.0 to 1.1, lots of the plugins needed to be upgraded as well.

What I would recommend is deactivating all of your plugins, deactivating BP. Upgrade BP. Make sure everything works okay with just WPMU and BP installed, and then step through each other plugin one by one and upgrade them if they need it, or activate them and see what’s conflicting.

sorry . it was a silly mistake. php tags were missing. works fine now . A featured posts gallery from various blogs would be a nice asset for buddypress.

I’m having the same problem. I will provide as MUCH information as I can per the list.

    Website here: http://test.risdarchitecture.net

I’ve moved the BP themes to the wp-content/themes directory.

This is the third clean install of WPMU and BP (including new SQL database, etc).

I host with 1and1, so I’ve had to add a .htaccess file to the root directory to change to php5.

    1. Which version of WPMU are you running? WordPress MU 2.8.4

    2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install? Directory

    3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? It is in the root, however the root URL itself is a subdirectory.

    4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WPMU? If so, from which version? No.

    5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress? Yes.

    6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running? Version 1.1.2

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? No.

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Yes.

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No.

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No.

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? BP came with an install of bbPress installed (I think).

    13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. My site is hosted by 1and1. I don’t think they provide log files.

Please help! I’ve read and read this forum and there doesn’t seem to be a definitive solution anywhere.

I’ve at least dug back through the fiddles I’ve done and I suspect the “force member login” but haven’t tried to fix it yet.

Here are the candidates for my woes

BP Events 0.59 was formerly manually added to the MU Plugins folder, not with BP1.1x and events 1.1

I see in mu plugins also force member login which I think I added for security purposes it’s from here https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/plugin-force-login-for-member-pages

The facebook connect needed a twiddle as at https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-fbconnect-missing-argument-5-for-fbc_get_avatar#post-20801

BUT I think that isn’t a problem for the revised FB connect

Brajesh – sorry for being “stupid” but I did “use existing bbpress installation” and I got the message that it worked but BuddyPress would now use its own version of bbPress so I could delete everything except bb-config.php.

In addition my forums are now at mysite.com/blogs/forums

    THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED.

First of all, thank you for trying to help out. I didn’t mean to abandon my own issue when everyone stepped up to help, but I was wildly distracted and just found time to work on this some more.

Long story short: Another WordPress Classifieds Plugin breaks BuddyPress groups. I just spent two hours going through everything, and it’s absolutely, undoubtedly AWPCP.

The odd thing is that I had it installed before this issue was happening. I even upgraded tonight, thinking it was nothing. I deactivated every BP plugin I was using weeks ago — groups, welcome pack, auto-join-groups, external-group-blogs, achievements — thinking they were the most likely culprits. I re-installed them tonight, then de-activated all of them again in case something was corrupted or went bad. Nothing changed.

Based on DJPaul’s advice, I went for both cforms and AWPCP out of sheer desperation. I’ve tested it 100 times now, and as it turns out, AWPCP breaks the avatar upload functionality.

It’s worth noting that I don’t know why. I even tested the events avatar functionality, and it worked just fine.

I googled this before I posted, and I haven’t seen any other mention of this conflict, so I’m posting this here in hopes that it may help someone else. I currently have version 1.0.5.9 installed, but like I said, I just upgraded tonight, so the previous version was an issue too. Older versions may well not cause a conflict.

Anyway, thank you all again for your help on this and your work with BP.

    hi

You can use the existing/stand alone bbpress instllation.

from the backend buddypress->forum setup->use existing bbpress installtion.

Now if you have installed the buddypress on the root domain, and you want the url

yoursite.com/forums for standalone bbpress forum,You will have to make some changes.

Since with bp 1.1 yoursite.com/forums is used as the forum directory, you need to change that forum slug or install bbpress at some other url,say yoursite.com/some-forum

Well, I have managed to step back to BP 1.0.3 at least and all is working as it was a 2 hours ago. (I populated a 2nd mysql table with the backup and pointed back there)

I think that’s enough excitement for today.

I did note Michael Berra’s comment here

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/trouble-upgrading#post-25605

saying he had some special file added in. This reminded me that I’ve made little mods too. When I return to this I’ll document them and see if I can uncover the problem (and report it here)

    You are welcome.

I am not sure about the fatal error(as it should not appear).

Since the Buddypress menu is available in the admin now,It seems the plugin got activated.

    try following

1.rename the wp-content/bp-themes directory to something else[as you upgraded from 1.0.3 which used old theme architecture]

    2.copy the themes bp-sn-parent and bp-default from buddypress/bp-themes to wp-content/themes

Go to site back end.Enable the themes and activate the bp-default.hopefully,It will be working.

    Thanks Brajesh

I used FTP, uploaded BP 1.1.2 zipped, deleted the BP folder in plugins, unzipped the new BP refreshed the page and it showed up as installed but inactive (as it should).

    I attempted to activate and:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare bp_activity_install() (previously declared in …/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-activity.php:19) in …/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-activity.php on line 52

I see the PB dashboard elements in the left column now up under “site admin” which is marginally better I guess but the public facing page is now blank

hi,seems there have some files partially present in your plugins directory.

try using FTP and deleting the buddypress folder inside plugins. Then try manually uploading the buddypress (using FTP to avoid any partial download issues) and activating it.

    Let us know,how it goes.

andrea_r in a similar situation over at MU forum recommended deleting the plugin and reinstalling it. This I tried. I used the Plugin control panel and clicked “delete” and got this error:

Warning: require_once(…wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-loader.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in …/wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-events.php on line 36

in all cases above I’ve replaced my actual root file names with “…”

I also note that while the list of plugins says it is inactive, the left hand column of the dashboard still has BuddyPress listed at the bottom. I think this was what was supposed to show for 1.0.3 but my development sandbox version of 1.1.3 that does work fine, has that near the top under site admin

    @Erich:

This is kind of diverting from the original topic, but what I meant in your ticket is BuddyPress forums are powered by BuddyPress groups.

So you can’t really have “threaded forums” without having “threaded groups” or some way to organize and categorize groups, which currently doesn’t exist.

If you’re just talking about displaying the forums vertically, that’s possible via CSS.

    Hope that makes sense…

Yes, it is on the roadmap:

BuddyPress 1.3 (TBD) / Wire: “In-line replies to messages”.

I have asked for “threaded” items many times in this Forum, but it seems WP-guys do not like “threaded” things (besides P2-theme)…… :-(

    https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1068

    @RAY

I do not understand the comments you have made within above mentioned TRAC-ticket.

Just have a look at the link within this TRAC-ticket; there you will see a threaded Forum which works very nice and intuitive…..

DJPaul – I fear you are wrong – this is EVERYTHING to do with buddyPress – BP KILLS WPMU themes when that pig of a 1960’s ice cream parlour decor known as bp-sn-parent and it’s cantankerous child bp-default take over the entire site.

The plugin “Default Blog Templates” is available from the WPMU Plugins repository but the “bluddypress” default theme also kills the settings in that, and takes control of the blog admin pages too, such that saved drafts cannot be previewed and the top left button to “visit site” simply returns the user back to the blog admin dashboard.

I don’t know if this is specific to just v1.1.2 on WPMU 2.8.4a but it’s getting closer to a rip-out and ditch for BP for me. At least WPMU was working and ready for custom development before BP went in.

If I set a forum in a hiddend BuddyPress group it will be hidden in BBPress too?.

    @sacom, not necessarily.

Look into Burt Adsit’s bp Groups plugin:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bpgroups/

This is what I’m using on BP < 1.1 (yeah I know I got to play catch-up!)

I’m not sure how compatible it is with BP 1.1+…

    Hey Marcus,

Check out a cool plugin by Sandra Petronic that does what you want it to do:

    http://devbox.computec.de/2009/09/buddypress-activity-comments-plugin/

    Discussion thread here:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/activity-comments-plugin

    Hope that helps!

Thank you Brajesh for your reply.

One question more… so If I do that, installing a separate BBPress, the group forums of BuddyPress will be available in my standalone BBPress?

If I set a forum in a hiddend BuddyPress group it will be hidden in BBPress too?.

    Thanks in advance ;)

In the long run it does not matter to me where the privacy settings menu reside. Proper functionality is of prime importance.

Perhaps we will find a happy medium ground for placing the privacy settings menu in the default BP theme and simply let people decide for themselves how they style it in their own custom themes.

tcesco, I recently ported over a version of the more general bbPress attachments plugin by _ck_: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/. The downside is that I haven’t yet gotten inline images to work, which means that people can upload and download images but they don’t appear as images in the posts (just downloadable file links). Thus it might not work for your purpose, but it’s worth a look.

    Yes, you are right.

Buddypress allows you to integrate an standalone bbpress installation. To have full control,Install bbpress separately and Integrate it to buddypress.

You will have your buddypress groups with forums enabled with bbpress,as well as the standalone bbpress forum accessible.

    Thanks DJPaul.

So if I like to have more control over forums, maybe I must install a separate BBPress and then integrate it?, or it makes no difference and BuddyPress forums and BBPress will go separately each on his side?
