    I know this is old, but I ran into this problem last week, so I want to share what I did to resolve it in case any other users have a similar problem and are looking for help.

    Basically, when I installed Courseware, none of the subnav menus or text editors were showing up on my custom theme running BP Template Pack, but they worked fine on BP’s Default Theme.

    I tried to follow the instructions here, but I noticed that the BP Template Pack plugins.php file already had the hooks that it needed (bp_before_group_body and bp_after_group_body), so that wasn’t the issue.

    To fix the problem, I copied and pasted the plugins.php file from the BP Default Theme over my custom theme’s plugins.php file (the one created by BP Template Pack). I then made the necessary (div) adjustments to make it work with my custom theme (exactly as I had done when initially setting up BP Template Pack). Voila, my sub navs and text editors appeared beautifully, all within my custom theme.

    I hope this saves somebody a little trouble.

    @djpaul @39images I’ve removed my name from the topic which I forgot to do earlier 🙂

    From what I’ve seen so far, Artisteer themes are a tricky lot to try to template-pack. Some succeed, others don’t. Since you’re just starting your development, I suggest downloading BP 1.7 beta 1 https://buddypress.org/2013/02/buddypress-1-7-beta-1/ where you won’t need the BP Template Pack plugin unless Artisteer has rewritten WP regular templating system.

    P.S. If you’ve already gone through the Appearance > BP Compatibility process, you’d have to deactivate BP Template Pack plugin, then remove the 6 BP folders transferred to your Artisteer theme folder in server to allow BP 1.7 theme compatibility to work.

    I suggest the use of  Buddypress Extended Settings, a great plugin. https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/buddypress-extended-settings

    Could you perhaps explain what you are hoping to see on the front page.

    Buddypress will not just appear on the homepage of a website, just because you have installed it.

    If you wish to see links to the buddypress pages they you must familiarise yourself with the WordPress menu system: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide

    If you wish to see a complete, specific Buddypress page as your homepage (Example – Activity) Then you would navigate to WP/Settings/Reading – Select a static page option, and choose the page you want as your homepage from the dropdown. (Again these are basic WordPress settings, not Buddypress)

    If the above solutions are not what you are looking for, could you please explain a little better in what you are actually hoping to achieve.

    What theme are you using? We might have template-packed it already.

    Also, if you’ve only just begun developing the site, I recommend using BP 1.7 beta 1 instead = download beta at link https://buddypress.org/2013/02/buddypress-1-7-beta-1/

    Deactivate BP Template pack plugin and delete the 6 BuddyPress folders transferred to your theme’s folder in server namely: activity, blogs, forums, groups, members, registeration

    Go to Settings > BuddyPress > Components and uncheck Discussion Forums. Read this https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/

    Ugh. Run. Fast.

    Offer to hand over everything you’ve already completed for somewhere between $15K – 20K, then run like a bat outta hell. Asynaptic is spot on. This client is trying to eat you for lunch.

    And listen, you have to hear this. Offer to give him/her what you’ve already built and up to two days training on how to use it, then leave. Walk away. Go work for people who don’t make you FEEL like this person is making you FEEL. Don’t hang around this person, picking up their scraps. And do this now while you’re just starting out in your career. Get comfortable with the idea that you can pick who you work with, and that you’ve got a badass skill that deserves respect (and money).

    Still stuck on this.
    Have removed the white-space from BP default theme member files – always removing the close and open php tags before get_header( ‘buddypress’ );

    Here’s the error message:
    `Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at …/wp-content/themes/extendDefault/header.php:2) in …/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 876`

    If I use wp_safe_redirect, it doesn’t throw the error.
    If I use bp_core_redirect, it does throw the error.

    Both methods refresh the page.
    Neither shows the message from bp_core_add_message.

    Anyone? @djpaul ?

    I’m not a developer but am coming from the client side: let me warn you that any one who gives you BS like that is probably not going to pay you but string you along.  This may sound negative but let me explain.

    You wrote:

    “My client is currently telling me that they will pay me once the social community is bringing in revenue.  they have money, but they just don’t want to pay me.”

    What does ‘bringing in revenue’ mean exactly? gross or net? that is before expense or after expense? if after expense which expenses? does the expense include their salary? at what level of revenue? how will you verify it? will he open up his books and bank/paypal account to you? highly unlikely!!

    No my friend. You are about to get royally screwed. That talk is BS and it is merely another delaying tactic.

    Unfortunately there are a $ $ h @ t s in this world (on both sides, owners and developers) and they create problems for the rest of us by making us have to be very careful of who we work with and going through legal channels. Having said that, even if you have a contract do you realize that it isn’t really worth the e-paper it is written on? enforcing a contract is a totally different matter. Do you have the funds to hire a lawyer and go after this guy if he breaks his contract? so what good is a contract?

    The best thing to do is to STOP working and tell him: pay me NOW. If you have access to code or the site, lock it down and don’t release it until you are paid.

    Killing them Softly ending speech is relevant here (NSFW): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zK-b0INu1k

    Hopefully you’ll come out of this wiser and if you play your cards right also compensated for your time.

    About setting rates, go to elancer or other freelance websites, check with a ‘buddypress’ filter what the rates are for developers with your level of experience and knowledge. Then multiply it be a geographic modifier to find your rate (for example, if you are in the UK and they are in Indonesia, multiply your rate by 2.5).

    Hugo, Jeff & Paul:

    Thank you very much for your quick response.  This has helped me exponentially, and I have some idea of what to talk to my client about today.

    After reading through your answers and then looking up successful social communities like ones from the link below that evoke some of the success that my client is working towards, I realized that there is another question I bet many of us are wondering about.

    http://wpmu.org/buddypress-showcase-12-unique-and-inspirational-sites/

    What kind of revenue is/and can be developed from one of those BuddyPress communities.  Given, we can’t tell our clients “This “$___” is a range of how much revenue and traffic you should expect to receive from your BuddyPress social community.”  But, it would be nice to know from these communities how much they get in revenue.  I know that for some this doesn’t apply – because they are not-for-profit communities.  However, the traffic volume question is a good one for all these successful communities and would help us BuddyPress builders as we work with our clients and plan for the future.

    Thank you enormously & sorry about all the repetitive language in my original question above!

    Whoa – great question/post @mcgrafx!

    I’ve spent the better part of the past ~ 14 months doing:

    1. Customized, professional child theme designs for Buddypress (The design takes the most time) √
    2. Many levels of membership (some paid, some free) √
    3. Many++ sleepless nights to do points 1 & 2 (on WordPress multisite + Buddypress + bbPress)

    Many of the issues you’ve mentioned, particularly the contracts/fees/maintenance are issues I’ve struggled with in the past, and to a certain extent still do with some clients/projects. I’ll re-read this closer next week, but one thing, only based on my own experience working with buddypress & bbPress w/ clients is that anything involving buddypress (particularly with any full-design customization w/ child themes &/or custom plugin/functionality development as you’ve mentioned) is a ‘significant’ commitment of time + resources on both sides of the table. In my experience, very little happens along the path to ‘outside-the-box-customization’ auto-magically with buddypress! If it were me, I’d ask for 1. a retainer 2. a monthly or yearly mutually-binding contract (depending on the scope/scale – with separate parts for developing the site + future-maintenance ). You could also think about 3. a percentage of future revenue, but that might be more closely tied with being a co-founder & could basically dilute the potential for points 1 & 2.

    Still, a great & difficult question – good luck!

    -Jeff

    @mercime I understand what you’re saying, I really do. I tried everything. When I was able to successfully activate BP 1.7 beta, I received multiple posts on the activity stream — four of them right in a row. Here’s the really weird part. When I went to the BP default theme and posted from there, the little button wouldn’t appear to post the text. My site had some severe issues. It tried to, and a hard refresh sometimes made it appear. After making a post, the button disappeared again.

    I ultimately reverted back to the Stable BP version, and everything worked fine. Then, to make sure I won’t face an upgrade issue down the road when the new release is issued, I uploaded everything from scratch. Totally wiped it all clean and created a new database with a different name.

    I know this solution sounds like turning off a computer with the button on the tower — a big no no for professionals, but I’m still learning. A week ago I could barely navigate my multisite, and today I’m really moving through it. I even created custom page names this time to assign to BP.

    Last week after I installed BP 1.7 beta, I tried several times to change me permalinks. Mostly due to appearance and robot spam (renaming register page to something else).

    A new install today has afforded me the chance to really make a good solid base for any and all WordPress and BuddyPress upgrades in the future.

    I’m really learning a lot about databases and domain add-ons (for clean URLs). This past week I’ve taught myself to use cPanel for almost everything. I use FileZilla now for mostly uploading zip files.

    I hope I don’t wear out my welcome here with my issues. I really appreciate everyone’s help. I find myself often reading posts that are two and three years old. All informative. It’s all very interesting, and I’m really learning a lot.

    Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it.

    Kevin

    I successfully deleted my BuddyPress tables in my database so that i could re-install 1.7Beta1

    @km-schafer-1
    You shouldn’t have deleted the BuddyPress tables in your DB. You could just uploaded the BP 1.7 beta 1 folder to your server, that’s it.

    Or, via wp-admin, deleted BuddyPress in plugins panel and then uploaded the zip file of BP 1.7 beta 1.

    Reminder: always backup DB and server files whenever you upgrade. A few minutes doing that saves a lot of grief if something goes awry.

    Or, if you want tot test the latest beta versions:
    download BuddyPress 1.7 beta 1 – https://buddypress.org/2013/02/buddypress-1-7-beta-1/
    download bbPress 2.3 beta 2 – https://bbpress.org/blog/2013/02/bbpress-2-3-beta-2/

    Shame though; the point of 1.7 compatibility ought to have been to remove the need for template pack once and for all not to allow it to survive

    @hnla
    Agreed. Thing is, if the two/three -buddypress.php files don’t work because of all those customized conditional sidebars (it has happened), the other alternative is to hardcode the HTML structure this time by checking out the source code of a chosen layout and apply it to all of the 17 BP template files.

    Patience, patience, patience 🙂

    @ronia The only privacy BuddyPress provides out of the box it profile field visibility. Google around for other privacy options.

    @hnla this is a scenario which the BP Template Pack plugin could be used. Initial scan shows that two/three -buddypress.php files need to be created for compatibility.

    @creativepixels
    if you’re game, post the source codes of your theme’s header.php, sidebar.php, index.php and footer.php files as well. Let’s give it one more try 🙂

    Don’t quite understand

    i dont think its supported anymore

    The plugin author still replies to queries at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/wp-user-frontend up to, well, 30 minutes ago !

    Am glad though that

    wp user frontend brought me much closer to what I wanted!

    There was another plugin Quick Post Widget which was really superb but unfortunately vulnerabilities were identified and apparently it was withdrawn from the wordpress repository and to-date has not been updated. I presume a good coder (not me) could fork this so that the vulnerabilities were eliminated!

    @saukgp try http://buddydev.com/buddypress/introducing-buddyblog-allow-users-to-blog-from-their-buddypress-profile/ cool thing is that the posts created by the user will be shown in user’s BP profile page as well.

    Switched theme to Buddypress default theme. This irons out the duplicate post issue on root, but not the inability to add/delete activity from the mappedsub (Cyber-chat) ?
