    Thank you all for posting this! I’ve been reading for hours and this has fixed my issues.

    I’m running BP on a network install and want ALL subdomains to have use of BP. It was working on the main install but as I created subdomains, the BP pages (Activity, Members, etc,) was giving me 404 errors. I went down the htaccess rabbit hole for a while and gave up. Started at the beginning and reading thru all the forums that looked related and found this.

    @WesCleveland – The bp-custom.php works like a charm so far. Thanks for posting your solution.

    If in config.php add `define ( ‘BP_FRIENDS_SLUG’, ‘peeps’ );`, it works well clicking activity tab in home and going to friends tab. But if you click your account name and entering personal homepage, then clicking on friends tab will not load friend activity, still displaying sitewide activity.

    If you use customized group slug, then the problem will also be with group activity stream.

    I’m running bp 1.2.8 with wp 3.1.2

    R-a-y – that doesn’t work for me unfortunately.

    I am using the:
    – latest version of WordPress 3.1.2
    – Child theme of Suffusion

    And the latest plugins for Suffusion BP Pack (1.02), BuddyPress (1.2.8), and s2Member (3.5.7).

    Using the s2Member plugin settings, I have set my site to redirect users to a “Member Home” page upon logging in. This function used to work before I added BuddyPress + Suffusion BP Pack. However, since adding those plugins, I initially could not figure out why it no longer worked upon logging in. Currently, when a user logs in, the site just directs them to the main page (the default WordPress & site address). I disabled the other plugins and determined that it was BuddyPress handling the redirection.

    So I made a bp-custom.php and added that code just to see if I can test the redirection function itself and it didn’t work. I even tweaked his code as well to try add_filter(“login_redirect”,”bpdev_redirect_to_profile”,100,3); Did I need to do anything else to activate the plugin or did it automatically run and link to BuddyPress?

    Ultimately, it seems like I may have to implement a technique that onyx mentioned or something like http://www.thinkinginwordpress.com/2009/12/tweak-your-buddypress-login-to-redirect-to-the-page-user-was-viewing-while-login/

    Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

    for the record I have just done this with your page and it works as expected!

    Use this stylesheet they provide for most of your customisations rather than squirting them into the head.

    You can thank Boone for the answer below. Replace scope=groups with what ever filter you’d like to apply.

    Changing the tabs is an appearance issue; it doesn’t have any effect on the activity items shown.

    Try the following function in your functions.php or bp-custom.php. The logic is this: If the query string is empty (as it is when you first visit the activity page) and there is nothing in the POST variable that says which scope to show (that is, the user has not clicked ‘All Activity’ and thus set an AJAX request into effect), then show only my group content.

    `function bbg_my_groups_activity_default( $qs ) {
    if ( empty( $qs ) && empty( $_POST ) ) {
    $qs = ‘scope=groups’;
    }

    return $qs;
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_ajax_querystring’, ‘bbg_my_groups_activity_default’, 999 );`

    It looks like you need to do two things.

    1) Don’t do bp_ajax_querystring( ‘friends’ ). The function does not take arguments like ‘friends’. Just do bp_ajax_querystring() in the template file.
    2) Here is a function that, when placed in wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php, will do what you want:
    `function bbg_my_friends_activity_default( $qs ) {
    if ( is_user_logged_in() && empty( $qs ) && empty( $_POST ) ) {
    $qs = ‘scope=friends’;
    }

    return $qs;
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_ajax_querystring’, ‘bbg_my_friends_activity_default’, 999 );`

    The problem is that this is almost certain not to work correctly with the function you have in your template file:
    `function my_query_filter_new ( $query_string ) {
    $query_string .= ‘&per_page=10’;
    return $query_string; }
    add_filter( ‘bp_ajax_querystring’, ‘my_query_filter_new’ );`

    If you need this latter functionality, I would try to do some work to combine the functions so that the query strings are added in the proper order.

    Hi, im new on buddypress. I just created a custom theme for buddypress, using wordpress theme and buddypress template pack. My problem is there have no ajax-loader.gif for all my buddypress page (when i click post to reply an activity) all ajax’s functions working. Just no image of ajax loader as default themes.

    using buddypress 1.2.8. Can someone share where can i find that css or some code for my custom theme. thank you.

    I made a custom component( x-object ) and use the following code to post update in activity stream. It works perfectly.
    Then, I made another component( y-object ) and use the following code(replace x with y), — Neither component can post updates when they are both activated, can only active one of them.
    `function bp_xobject_activity_custom_update( $object, $item_id, $content ) {
    if ( ‘xobject’ == $object ) {
    return bp_xobject_post_update( array( ‘type’ => BP_XOBJECT_ACTIVITY_ACTION_COMMENT, ‘xobject_id’ => $item_id, ‘content’ => $content ) );
    }
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_activity_custom_update’, ‘bp_myobject_activity_custom_update’, 10, 3 );`

    If I remove this line:
    `if ( ‘xobject’ == $object )`
    then, both components can post, but their activities cross over to all other component’s activity page.

    Need help desperately.
    Please forgive me for calling the magical names.. @r-a-y , @boonebgorges

    Is it possible to have a custom profile for the admin? I want to disable a lot of things for the admin profile.
    Like: Activity, Profile, Messages, Friends, Album, Settings.

    Instead I’d like to have some kind of statement. Maybe telling people where to seek tech support.

    Hi,

    I’ve created a custom group extension. Now I want this to be a group homepage, not the activity stream.
    I really don’t want to change something in BP core, but couldn’t figure out how to make this the default output when user goes to domain.com/groups/groupslug

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    I just try it above muchad’s code and put that in your child theme function.php. It works, why? Because the characters are messing it up. Here’s workable code:
    `//=Change the number of activity items to show per page
    function my_custom_query_filter( $query_string ) {
    $query_string .= ‘&per_page=30’;
    return $query_string;
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_dtheme_ajax_querystring’, ‘my_custom_query_filter’ );`

    dl the zip untill it’s added to the respiratory – Buddypress UX

    I just uploaded a theme I created focused on enhancing the user experience – 3 column layout: multiple sidebars allowing for relative content to context, zebra activity styling, an enhanced logged-in widget and more.. The theme serves to be a base to work from and learn from whilst offering an alternative to the buddypress default theme.

    A special thanks to r-a-y, hnla, DJPaul, dwenaus, modemlooper and boonebgorges for helping me problem solve and furthering my skill set over the past two years. The theme is a ‘response’ to the post I read earlier today. Screw this..: people often forget that these people help us out of their ‘own time’, buddypress is community driven and we should, how ever we can, give back to the community. Sorry if I have left anyone out.

    Let’s hope it gets approved. I hope to get feedback/criticism on how the theme could be improved. In the mean time you can read the below.

    What’s been changed in the theme?

    The theme has been customized for a better user experience, there are a lot of small changes and I will try to list them all.

    -added multiple sidebars: home/index, activities, members, groups, forums, blog.
    -added a smaller header and content padder for the following pages; so users can focus on the task at hand, also removed the sidebars: registration page, create groups page.
    -added zebra styled activity streams for better readability*
    note there is an issue with IE
    -customized the logged-in widget with some added functionality, previously located in the buddypress default sidebar ( sidebar.php ). This was done to improve ‘user navigation’.
    -customized the activity form ( what’s new *user* ).
    -added a ‘change avatar’ link to a members profile, ( ../members/single/member-header.php ). This is only visable by the ‘profile owner’.

    Themes intended purpose

    This theme has been created to allow ‘new comers’ to Buddypress to have a bit more of a variety and a base to work from ( being a child theme of the buddypress default theme ) whilst maybe learning a thing or two – as the theme is well documented ( readme.txt ).
    Along with the above, I have tried to create a theme where by the user experience is better enhanced, allowing for better usability and readability.

    To do

    -fix the issue with the zebra styled activity streams not showing in IE.
    -fix a issue where by if the content area is ‘shorter’ than the sidebars ( being ‘taller’ from widgets ), the content boarder breaks.
    -remove unnecessary ‘pages’ and clean up the css.

    Hi guys,
    I’m working on a project ‘lovethistune.com’ where I want to allow members to create fan pages ,first I thought to use groups for fun pages but then I decided to develop my own component to be able to allow members to customize their fan pages as well ,similar to youtube channels.

    So everything seems to work fine so far but now i need to add actions to activity stream for lets say (some_user created a fan page or some_user has become fan of some fan_page).

    I appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Alan

    <i> How can I make it so it displays the users by nicknames, not by their names?</i>

    That is what Buddypress does currently. It displays their “RealName” rather than their Username across the site.

    <i> how can I add Activity and Members links in the adminbar?</i>

    Add this to your bp-custom.php:

    function pages(){
    ?>

    <li class="no-arrow"><a href="yoursite.com/activity">Activity</a>

    <li class="no-arrow"><a href="yoursite.com/groups/">Groups</a>

    <?php
    }
    add_action( 'bp_adminbar_menus', 'pages', 15 );

    I have been reading the http://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/ page and believe it is possiable, but I’m not exactly sure how.

    I wish to great a filtered activity stream tab to show activity from specific users only. Only users who have selected a specific result for their profile from a drop down menu. In this case, a certain country.

    How would I go about coding this?

    Many thanks

    Hi there

    I want to be able to have different user groups on registration. At the moment all users are added to the Base user group I believe, however it would be useful if there could be two groups that users could be added to. The point is I’m trying to create a virtual exhibition website and wanted to have different permissions for exhibitors and normal people. For instance normal people can interact with each other, make friends, join groups and such, but I want exhibitors to only be able to have a profile page. They can’t make friends with normal people, or view their profiles, as it were.

    Is there any way to do something like this at all? Say on registration users have to choose whether they are an exhibitor or a normal client (delegate)? And then change the permissions for these groups.

    Users still need to be able to create custom groups and join them etc, but just define their overall activity on the site with these two overall groups. Is there a plugin or feature for this?

    Thanks

    or, :) you can redirect the “Reply” button to the “Leave a reply” textarea in the forums, and so on in the comments:

    `
    function cac_insert_comment_reply_links( $has_comments ) {
    global $activities_template, $wpdb, $bbdb;

    do_action( ‘bbpress_init’ );

    $topics_data = array();
    $posts_data = array();
    foreach( $activities_template->activities as $key => $activity ) {
    if ( $activity->type == ‘new_forum_topic’ ) {
    $topic_id = $activity->secondary_item_id;
    $topics_data[$topic_id] = $activity->primary_link;
    $topics_data[$topic_id] = $key;
    }

    if ( $activity->type == ‘new_forum_post’ ) {
    $post_id = $activity->secondary_item_id;
    $posts_data[$post_id] = array_pop( array_reverse( explode( ‘#’, $activity->primary_link ) ) );
    $posts_data[$post_id] = $key;
    }
    }

    // In cases where we only have the post id, we must do an extra query to get topic ids
    if ( !empty( $posts_data ) ) {
    $post_ids = array_keys( $posts_data );
    $post_ids_sql = implode( ‘,’, $post_ids );
    $sql = $wpdb->prepare( “SELECT topic_id, post_id FROM {$bbdb->posts} WHERE post_id IN ({$post_ids_sql})” );
    $post_topic_ids = $wpdb->get_results( $sql );

    // Now that we have the topic IDs, we can add that info to $topics_data for the main query
    foreach( $post_topic_ids as $post_topic ) {
    $topics_data[$post_topic->topic_id] = $posts_data[$post_topic->post_id];
    }
    }

    // Now for the main event
    // First, make a topic list and get all the associated posts
    $topic_ids = implode( ‘,’, array_keys( $topics_data ) );
    $sql = $wpdb->prepare( “SELECT topic_id, post_id FROM {$bbdb->posts} WHERE topic_id IN ({$topic_ids})” );

    – Create a child theme.

    – Copy over the file index.php from activity folder of bp-default theme to childtheme/activity/index.php
    https://trac.buddypress.org/browser/tags/1.2.8/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/index.php#L10

    – Add the slider to above or within the content div or wherever you want in that index.php file

    Is there a way to customize the “activity” page by editing the theme files? All I want to do is add a jj nextgen slider on the top of the box where logged in users can post content. I’m planning to make the activity my home page, but I want some pictures on top of the activity stream.

    I tried to add the image slider to the activity-loop.php, but nothing appeared. Makes me wonder if I’m editing the wrong file.

    I am trying to add custom query pagination to the activity stream.
    http://www.domain.com/members/steven/page/2/
    However, I get re-directed to the homepage.

    for example:
    `
    $query_string = “author=$user_id&post_status=publish”;
    $myResult = query_posts($query_string);
    while ( have_posts() ) : the_post();
    echo “some code here”;
    endwhile;
    include (TEMPLATEPATH . ‘/paginate.php’);
    `
    I can display the proper pagination links (next page,prev page), but a page load of http://www.domain.com/members/steven/page/2/ re-directs to the homepage rather than displaying the 2nd page of my custom query results. I think that the activity stream pagination may be interfering or that query pagination is not hooked to the activity page.

    Anyone have any ideas on how to get pagination working on the activity stream?

    It would be VERY helpful if the $settings_link variable was included with the following filters:
    ‘messages_notification_new_message_message’
    ‘bp_activity_at_message_notification_message’
    ‘friends_notification_new_request_message’
    ‘friends_notification_accepted_request_message’

    The $settings_link is dynamically calculated within the originating functions and is not easily duplicated (and in some cannot be duplicated) in any custom functions filtering the message content.

    For context: The $settings_link is used for directing email recipients to their notifications settings page.
