ParticipantHi Hugo,
I did read that link you provided previously, and I have been searching the codex pages. Perhaps this is a case of “the light not coming on” for me. 🙂 It is probably an issue of me not ever having created a child theme.
If I understand the codex link you sent me correctly, then basically I create a buddypress directory in my personal themes folder (gotbooks_forums), then copy over whatever I want to modify? Like buddypress.php? And then I create a css folder, and copy over the css files that I want to modify?
Am I on the right track? My apologies for all the questions. I’ve been searching the web for hours and have finally decided to ask for help.
Thanks much,

ParticipantHi @sharmavishal,
the plugin is working on BP 1.9 ! And as site admin you can publish (create) an activity and make it sticky from within your activity admin.
The plugin isn’t intended to make any activity sticky. You can only make an existing post or an existing forum topic sticky. To do so, you have also to activate the screen option when you’re on the edit page.
Be also aware that you can only stick ONE activity.
Please follow this video for complete explanation about all this is working.

ParticipantI totally agree with @peterverkooijen and @codeispoetry
Keymaster @johnjamesjacoby (John James Jacoby) is clearly in another world mushrooming, because of his lack of PHP coding knowledge and world culture giving false arguments. BuddyPress developers years ago came up with this stupid ida of one full name and their DB structure is so messy that they cant be now bothered to change it. on DB structure the user name is not in user column, is just a value like any other form input values. So their change the fullname to firstname+lastname will be a BIG development deal, therefore they cant be bothered with it, so left it as it is. And on support forums like this, they keep defending this silliness by fake arguements like “some cultures use 4 names etc !!!” I guess they are talking about Mexican people have 4-5 names. But their lack of world culture makes them think like it. Mexican, Spanish people has 2-3 first name and then 1-2 last names (surnames), or in Europe some women carry their surnames and as well as their husband’s surname too, so they have 1 or 2 first names and 1-2 surnames. Birth given names are called FIRST NAMES anywhere in the world, and family given or marriage given names are LAST NAMES anywhere in the world. So what BuddyPress could do: Could create 2 name boxes and relevant DB structure, one saying first name (people can enter 1 or 2 or 3 names all around the world people know which ones are their first names and which ones are their surnames unlike the Keymaster @johnjamesjacoby John James Jacoby)) and on the second box they can enter their surname or surnames, thats all. So BuddyPress data would be compatible with all newsletter, emailing softwares and people can search first names or last names etc.. can normalize itself to the world web technology. So if some people dont want to display last names they can, if they want to display the whole full name they can, give people felexibility, instead what they do they behave like dictatorian attitude, they say “take it or leave it” arrogantly, and they keep arguing here with all participants who made BuddyPress this popular, although the popularity fastly going down because of this techology lackings. More importantly culture and attitude and support lackings.February 20, 2014 at 4:31 pm #178689In reply to: Mirroring forum posts

KeymasterYou’ll want to build a custom taxonomy for your topics to replace the way you’re using forums now. Topics can only exist in 1 forum, but they can exist in multiple taxonomies and terms.

ParticipantHi,
talking about forums and group forums, the clear difference between the both from technical aspect will be the URL formation.
Also i see SEO plugins don’t work correctly on Group Forums.Any idea why so?

I am having this issue currently whenever a user tries to access a forum or a topic. Did you ever find a resolution to this? I’ve been beating my head against the wall. LOL. 🙂
Thanks…

KeymasterSomething like that should work! I cleaned it up a little for you, and fixed a typo.
function bbg_change_profile_tab_order() { $bp = buddypress(); $bp->bp_nav['profile']['position'] = 60; $bp->bp_nav['activity']['position'] = 50; $bp->bp_nav['friends']['position'] = 40; $bp->bp_nav['groups']['position'] = 30; $bp->bp_nav['settings']['position'] = 10; $bp->bp_nav['forums']['position'] = 20; } add_action( 'bp_setup_nav', 'bbg_change_profile_tab_order', 999 );February 12, 2014 at 4:36 pm #178318John James Jacoby
KeymasterUnfortunately, you can’t assume that because your account has a certain role, that you’re able to do certain things, especially once you start installing membership plugins that directly manipulate the way roles and capabilities work.
(Role/cap problems are amongst the worst to troubleshoot in WordPress, IMO. There is no UI to help you, and there is little documentation available to guide you through the complex process of unraveling WordPress’s role based access control. It’s also my experience that most role/membership plugins are quirky, and can oftentimes leave your users and roles in a very crippled and polluted state.)
Do any of these plugins that you’re using place limitations on types of posts that users can see? Is it possible you blocked Topics on accident?
I wrote a bbPress plugin almost a year ago to try and provide a bbPress specific solution to roles and capabilities, and troubleshooting why specific users are blocked from certain things:
https://github.com/johnjamesjacoby/bbp-capabilities
You’ll need to install it on your site manually with your favorite FTP program. After installing the plugin, visit your Users in
wp-adminand try editing a user that’s having issues viewing topics. At the very bottom, underneath their Forum Role, will be a large table of bbPress capabilities, the current permission, the source of that permission, and allow you to manipulate it. Anything highlighted in yellow is a deviation from the role (saved to the user instead) and there is a button to reset the user’s capabilities back to match the default role.Hopefully this all helps track this down.

ParticipantNope, not at all, as long as we join up in the solution! I’m in the same boat as this being an urgent issue, and I’m not sure what to toggle, or files to look at to resolve this.
I’ve cycled a user through every forum role, and site role, and in my case, only the Administrator can see the content. I have removed protection on the post itself completely and that hasn’t made a difference. Not sure what else to stab at.
@johnjamesjacoby You mention things that look like PHP calls in a template file somewhere, which I haven’t edited, but how would I test for these things?February 11, 2014 at 10:45 pm #178277SaoWolfe
ParticipantI’m having the same problem, except that it doesn’t matter what the user role is, the topic content isn’t visible.
Here’s an example link: http://www.knhub.ca/groups/communications-community-of-practice-cop/forum/
When you click on the topic all it shows is the topic title (as was the case in @robgranholm’s example #1) and the option to reply. But reply to what??? The content isn’t visible to see. I have administration access so it’s not a role issue.
I would also really appreciate some support as this is a HUGE problem for me right now. FYI, I am using a membership plugin…Membership Premium. But it doesn’t seem to be a role or content protection issue since I’m an admin.
Here’s the link to me earlier Buddypress Forum post:https://buddypress.org/support/topic/content-of-topics-in-group-forums-not-displaying/
@robgranholm: I hope you don’t mind me piggy-backing on your post here since it’s essentially the same issue. Thanks,

ParticipantAny chance this has been addressed some how? i need basic options for bios – so members can make them look nice – not just one big block of text….
p, strong/b, em/i, link, ol/li, maybe h2/3/4, blockquote
that would suffice.essentially the same options we have here in the forum… sans the code one.

Participant@henrywright cool, hadn’t noticed anything but then seldom run that constant, if you spot anything naturally ticket it.
@fkapnist you’re not doing yourself any favours – in life you get what you pays for, know where I’m going with this? 🙂Complaints? no no complaints here, this is a volunteer help forum.
BP installs just fine in the vast majority of cases, run BP with a correctly written theme and you’ll have no problems unless some errent plugin is at work.

ParticipantThe documentation says: “improvements to theme compatibility.” But judging from all the complaints on this forum, I’d say that version 1.9.2 has introduced new theme compatibility problems…

ParticipantI wrote my own theme and am always trying to do things the right way but initially things were not working correctly with bbPress or BuddyPress. I now realise was my theme using the_excerpt rather than the_content on the special pages.
I’d read the topics in the buddypress codex on theme support but these mainly addressed the issue of altering pages using the template selection rather then explaining what a theme author needs to do to make their theme work properly with bbPress or BuddyPress. Just explaining how it injects its content into pages (by hooking the_content) is not immediately obvious to the newcomer.
In my theme I had been using is_singular() to know when to show content rather then expert and use parameterised preferences for each post type for when is_singluar() was false.
Simply changing this test to (is_singular() || is_page()) suddenly turned my theme from incompatible to reasonably compatible. The “/forums” slug still did not work properly but after searching around I discovered the is_bbPress() function and expanded the test to:
(is_singular() || is_page() || (function_exists(‘is_bbPress’) && is_bbPress()))
There may be other tricks and gotchas I haven’t found yet, but as I say it would be really nice to have a topic directed specifically at theme authors to make sure they know what needs to be in place to make things work.

ParticipantOk what is not clear in that particular guide is the necessity of creating a new forum but selecting ‘category’ rather than ‘forum’ when you save/create it, this category is the groups forums parent and the slug that you would see appear in that select option, the one referenced ‘Groups Forum’ is simply an example name.
Have a read of this other guide to installing bbPress from new written by our own @mercime as it explains the steps very clearly:
The upgrading guide will need a little editing to make things clearer.

ParticipantI take it you are working in a localhost, dev environment from your reference to Dreamweaver?
If that is the case your topic title was a little misleading and implying something that wasn’t the case – fyi it is considered bad form on lists, forums to use ‘Urgent’ or ‘Emergency’ in thread titles.
Dreamweaver can’t run dynamic sites of any description, it’s frankly a rather bad application in general, the only real use for it is in it’s editor form, avoid any notion of using it’s wysiwyg options.
If this is a a localhost dev issue then you need to setup a proper server to run these sorts of sites from, look at installing something like Xampp or Mampp or search the WP plugin repo as iirc there are plugins to help with setting up dev environments.
