do I have to configure a wildcard for my websites

You only need to configure wildcard if you created a network (multisite) with subdomain structure/mode e.g. http://community.example.com . Looking at your example above with subsite example.com/community in subdirectory mode, so no.

You don’t want both http://www.example.com and http://example.com to both be accessible. Why? Because Google will penalize you for duplicate content ironically from your own site. You need to decide whether you want www or no-wwww. Check what’s in the Site Address of your Settings > General, it should be the same as your WordPress Address, either both have www or both have no www.

Deactivate BuddyPress. You have to resolve the URL issue before you activate BuddyPress again. If you need assistance with this matter, please go to https://wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite

@mercime.. will do. Question, do I have to configure a wildcard for my websites? Here is my scenario: I have one main site WITHOUT buddypress installed and a sub-site WITH buddypress and I only want to have these features on my sub-site: Forums, Groups, Extended user profiles, Private messaging and Friends connection.

Also, I want my sites addresses to look like these

My Community site: http://www.domain.com/community .. also http://domain.com/community (without www) should be accessible

And my main site: http://www.domain.com/.. and http://domain.com/ (without www) should be accessible.

What kind of settings should I use to accomplish this?

@hugodisasters Not familiar with the theme you’re using but based on the image alone, looks like buddypress.css and buddypress.js which are enqueued by the plugin are missing. I suggest checking in your premium theme’s forums for similar issues or try reuploading BuddyPress plugin folder manually (FTP,etc).

@mercime thanks for looking into this. I am using WP 3.5.2 and BP 1.8 I upgraded from the previous version and I am hosted on Bluehost.

Something really strange is going on, I tried to login today and my http://domain.com/wp-admin/ was redirecting me back to http://www.domain.com. I looked at my database and I saw my Siteurl and home tables were changed to http://www.domain.com/community (which is my community site) .. I manually changed my Siteurl and home back to http://www.domain.com and now I can login to wp-admin but when I try to browse the community site (http://www.domain.com/community) it says page not found. If I change my Siteurl and home in database to http://www.domain.com/community then both sites work but I can access my wp-admin only via http://www.domain.com/wp-admin and not http://domain.com/wp-admin. Is this normal that the database tables Siteurl and home change to my community site address?

I am going to follow your instructions and read the links you provided to see if I can figure out what’s going on with the Forum/Groups issue.

    Thanks

    Thanks for ur reply Hugo!

Yes he is done with the development but if I wanna add Buddypress forum after he is done it’s not his job anymore or I mean free job. I was using tal.ki forums and he installed it later I decided to move to a better forum like BuddyPress that’s why now it’s my duty to do the work. I have asked him for help about this but it’s taking too long for him to reply now and I can’t always wait him to reply for each issue I face that’s why I have to try to solve them on my own.

And yes I don’t have a good knowledge about CSS or javascrip or other programs but I have some knowledge that may help me to solve the problems I face that’s why the only way for me is to ask my questions here and if you need any more details I am ready

    Thanks for ur reply John!

Sounds like your theme has javascript errors in it somewhere. You’ll want to track them down and eliminate them.

Your questions so far have given me the impression that you’re quite new to WordPress web development (modifying plugin files, not knowing how to debug javascript, etc…) If this is the case, you’ll have a better experience by searching the web for similar problems, and solving some of these issues on your own.

That’s true, I have hired a web developer to design my website and he is done now with developing the website and now I found some problems I am trying to fix them on my own that’s why I am asking too many questions these days.

Also, words like “Help!” or “URGENT” don’t actually make anyone help you sooner than anyone else around here. Most volunteers will jump in and help who they can, when they can, — if you appear manic, it decreases the investment someone is willing to make in you, your site, and your topic.

Hoping to not sound discouraging. We’re excited you’re using BuddyPress, and want you to enjoy our community to its fullest.

No I understand you, I am already an admin on a big forum which has around 27K members and alexa rank around 35K and veryday I face members who ask questions like this ( like me 😀 ) and I know it won’t help but the previous question when I said urgent I was really afraid that all the data in the website has been lost because I didn’t have backup since around 2 days and I added so much stuff int the past couple of days and in this question I just was mentioning it’s a question by saying “Help!” and nothing more

    Thanks again!

set their forum role to keymaster in your users list or directly from the wp admin profile edit screen.

If anyone cares, the proper solution is just to copy loop-single-topic.php into your themes dir and edit till your hearts content. The only semi-tricky thing is that it must be in a /bbpress/ dir within your theme. For example:

    wp-content/themes/yourtheme/bbpress/loop-single-topic.php

    It worked 😀

I had a backup of the that file and reuploaded it but the new one has around 2400 line while the old one which I uploaded it now has 1032 line but nothing seems to be changed on the website so may that affect things or hidden things like functioning the forum and that things?

I think now it’s better because my website developer helped me with it http://www.techknowledgic.com/forums

but if a visitor wants to register do they have to register with wordpress to be able to log in to my site? I mean I can’t have my own registration area?

You need, then, to wait for a fix from the lead developers and/or raise a ticket on one or other of the projects trac system. Copying or mixing files from two different release versions of an app is always going to be something to absolutely avoid really, however there was more detailed fix demonstrated, which involves hacking core files which might be safer short term interim solution and which would be overwritten when a core fix/update is released.

I mean in the WP admin area and I see it in the dashboard

and about the pic I have asked a question yesterday about re sizing the pic size in the forum https://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-resize-memebrs-images-sizes/

idk what’s going on with me and why nothing is working

and about the weird characters also they are available almost in all the pages like the contact us for example it ends with #.Ue-C0PnI1FM I thought that it’s normal but I will check this out with the developer if he solve it

    – Let’s test. Create a new Page named Discussions and place the forums shortcode there. Go to Settings > Forums and change archive slug to discussions. Then go to technowldgic.com/discussions/ and check out your forums

I tried this and after saving the setting the forum page became 404 error page and also I am seeing this error near the box where I wrote discussions “Possible bbPress conflict: Topics base” so I removed it and wrote forums and topics again in the archive slugs

Going back to logging in. I added the bbPress login widget to the sidebar of Twenty Twelve theme and it’s working fine even with BuddyPress activated. What are you using for your users to log in?

I don’t think I am using anything, I thought everything would come with the buddypress plugin like the log in area and everything else. what should I use?

and I am so sorry for asking too many questions and having too many problems but idk why I am so lost by installing the forum

and ty so much for ur help

What did seem to make a difference was downloading the Members Plugin and changing the roles for Administrator. A bunch of them were not checked, including the role of a Participant. I checked everything and was able to post again. I then updated to the latest version of bbPress.
Glad you figured out a workaround, however one shouldn’t need to use a thirdparty plugin to fix another, there’s an issue that needs addressing, I have this where I have groups enabled for forums but haven’t had a forum selected to use, trying to do so results in a perms issue and using the bbpress forum tools to remap users to default perms has any effect which it ought to or suggests ought to.

However, if I navigate to the dashboard and edit the group from the CPT where you have the same options as front end the process does work, so when issues might arise worth trying from that way around.

@faramarz let’s start at the beginning, WP/BP versions? Is this a new installation or did you upgrade from previous BP/WP versions? Where are you hosted?

    – Did you follow the steps at https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/ ?

    – Try basic troubleshooting procedures like changing to Twenty Twelve theme and deactivating plugins except BuddyPress and bbPress and let me know what happens.

The same setting works just fine on my local XAMPP but it doesn’t work on production server.

How did you install WordPress in production server – via webhost’s one-click install or did you install it manually e.g. FTP? If via webhost’s one-click install then you could encounter some hiccups in your production site see https://codex.buddypress.org/user/before-installing/#system-and-server-requirements

I log in to my admin area I see this message “Go Daddy Quick Setup ™

More than 5 years since I used GoDaddy, when you say admin area, are you referring to the GoDaddy admin area or your WP install’s admin area? If in WP install admin area, then there’s an issue. Otherwise, let’s move on.

I am just trying to fix some issues with it before I launch

I don’t know what aspect of your site was developed by the person you hired.
    – Note that your avatar at http://www.techknowledgic.com/members/techknowledgic/ is showing up humongous in Chrome.
    – And the avatar under freshness in Forums index page is showing too big.
    – Why is #.Ue8yX43rw80 appended to your forums slug when I go http://www.techknowledgic.com/forums/ ? strange.
    – Let’s test. Create a new Page named Discussions and place the forums shortcode there. Go to Settings > Forums and change archive slug to discussions. Then go to technowldgic.com/discussions/ and check out your forums

Going back to logging in. I added the bbPress login widget to the sidebar of Twenty Twelve theme and it’s working fine even with BuddyPress activated. What are you using for your users to log in?

@hnla, since you have been patient with me so far, Hugo, can you help me with my initial question of the Activity streams? I found the following and made notes in my forum help area on my site:

I want to disable replies on the Activity Streams because they do not carry through to the original post in the Group Forums.

My notes on how to do this:

Post on why this is confusing: http://commonsinabox.org/groups/help-support/forum/topic/your-members-might-be-confused-activity-stream-comment-vs-group-forum-reply/

Discussion about this on GitHub: https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/commons-in-a-box/issues/73

Solution by boonebgorges (one of the BuddyPress authors):
Putting this line in your functions.php or bp-custom.php file will disable all activity stream commenting:

    add_filter( ‘bp_activity_can_comment’, ‘__return_false’ );

    Note on bp-custom.php file:
    Creating your file

bp-custom.php does not exist by default. If you don’t have a file located at /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php, go ahead and create a blank file with the following:

    ?
    1
    2
    3
    < ?php
// hacks and mods will go here
    ?>
Next, save the file as “bp-custom.php” and verify that this file is located at /wp-content/plugins/.

Now, when you encounter a forum thread telling you to put a code snippet in bp-custom.php, you’ll know what to do!
    See: https://codex.buddypress.org/developer/customizing/bp-custom-php/

    Action:
How is this done? Do I go to my control panel and create a file there?

@hnla, Hugo, I was able to figure it out! (Jumping up and down!)

I got it to work! Whew!

I did a lot of different things, including installing an older version of bbPress, but I don’t know if that matters. Actually, it probably does, because I was then able to see the forums on the backend again.

What did seem to make a difference was downloading the Members Plugin and changing the roles for Administrator. A bunch of them were not checked, including the role of a Participant. I checked everything and was able to post again. I then updated to the latest version of bbPress.

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/members/

I hope that it doesn’t do this again. A major pain! It took me all day to try different things and get it to work.

I tried to deactivate bbpress and the forum got deleted and the page which is mywebsite.com/forums became not available and giving 404 error and when I activated it again it worked again and in both cases I can’t see log in or register or anything in the page

and about the second question actually there was someone that was developing my website and he is done now with the website and now I am just trying to fix some issues with it before I launch it so idk if he used GoDaddy or not but when I log in to my admin area I see this message “Go Daddy Quick Setup ™
Build your WordPress site in just a few clicks.

Get Started No thanks, I’m good.” and sure with pictures and stuff but this is in general so maybe he didn’t use GoDaddy and also I have an FTP account to upload files or images but I just edit my site by the admin area mywebsite.com/wp-admin

and here is the link of the forum if you wanna check it clearly and see the details http://www.techknowledgic.com/forums
