MemberOf course they can and should be Googling that stuff, but we both know that is rarely the issue. The goal isn’t to educate the masses. The goal is to reduce the time it takes to answer those people by just posting a link.
For example. Someone recently asked how to change the color of the buttons. Yes they need to know how to adjust BP css, but they also need to know how to use tools like Firebug etc. Perhaps some feel the second part is beyond the scope of these forums (and I tend to agree), but the goal is to reduce the time it takes to reply to each. By providing them with links to non-BP tutorials it would reduce the amount of follow up questions.
As BP is made easier to develop you will be getting a lot more questions by people that don’t even know what css stands for. You have one of two choices, either try and help the helpless or turn them away frustrated by their ignorance.
You are going to have to deal with these issues as BP turns from being a a plugin mostly for developers into more of a consumer assessable plugin.

ParticipantWelcome to the BP forums

Firstly, I would like to know if I already have a wordpress site up and running and with a template that is not buddypress. If I install buddypress on that site, would it fit in with the current template or would I have to change my look?
Answer: You will need to integrate the new BP templates with your current theme. The plugin BP Template Pack guides you through this process and is available fro FWEE! in the plugins directory
.I am still finding my way around plugins/ addons but would normal wordpress plugins still work with buddypress?
Answer: This depends on the plugin and it’s functionality – to my knowledge, trial and error is the bestway

My site would be a Christian portal with community features. Where is best to get buddypress plugins from?
Answer: https://buddypress.org/extend/plugins/
News – This would import news from other sites via rss feed. : Use WordPress

Ecards: Find a plugin or someone to make it for you.
Directory Mod: Maybe you can modify the Portfolio plugin to do this
?
Q&A: Sorry, no idea
Amazon Store: Run a search with our best friend, im sure he’ll hit you up with a good plugin
You’re welcome for as far as it helped

Cheers,

Participant@shawn38 thanks for your help i figured things out after reading this post i also figured out that the plugin does work you just can’t turn it on or off using the new toolbar so what i did was using the custom file to temporarily activate the old toolbar in order to activate the ninja plugin. thanks again for all your help here and on the other topic!

grafics
ParticipantThis is crude and requires hacking core file, but until a better fix is found this seems to be working.
In the file, bp-forums-functions.php (located in buddypress>bp-forums) I added $text = ‘dice roll’
to line 354. So it now looks like
`function bp_forums_reply_exists( $text = ”, $text = ‘dice roll’, $topic_id = 0, $user_id = 0 ) {
$reply_exists = false;`Tried several successive dice rolls and they posted correctly. You’re mileage may vary! It also seems to allow duplication of regular text replies as well, so that’s not ideal.
I’d much rather have a function or better yet, an update to the plugin, but this seems to work for now.September 1, 2012 at 7:06 am #140681In reply to: Problem with a group forum dice roller
grafics
ParticipantIt appears that the check for this is coming from bp-groups-screens.php. The dice roller produces the same “Dice Roll” text each time so it’s being seen as a duplicate.
There has to be some way to add another check for the dice roller text, but not sure how to do that.
Perhaps a function that would override? Anyone have ideas?September 1, 2012 at 6:06 am #140680In reply to: Is this possible? YES / NO?

Hello,
Thank you very much that you replied. No, I have been trying to find a solution for this for more than a month at BuddyPress forums, S2member forums and everywhere else I could find people talking about BuddyPress but no luck!S2member support has said that this is not possible, they suggest uri restrictions but a uri restriction prevents user from seeing their own profile too.
If for example I restrict /profile/ a member will not be able to see his/her own profile. I somewhere found a custom uri /members/%%displayed_username%%/ but that too blocks members from own profiles.
Please put some light on the idea you have in mind.
Thank you very much for your time and help.

KeymasterHi tjtate, this forum thread is over 10 months old. When you see an old thread that hasn’t been answered in awhile, it’s better to just create a new topic.
To quickly answer, when bbPress 2.0 is more tightly integrated with BuddyPress groups, it might be possible to use an existing bbPress 2.0 plugin with BuddyPress when that time comes. Until then, you probably won’t see threaded forum posts.
I’m going to close this thread now, but feel free to post new topics in the future.

KeymasterSounds like the DB import might have affected something.
Can you try using a fresh DB? Try creating a few new groups and group forums and see if you can duplicate the issue.

Keymaster@jwordsmith – Sorry if you were confused during the forum installation.
You shouldn’t have to click on “Use existing installation”. Try clicking on the “Uninstall group forums” button and then click on “Install Group Forums”.
Hopefully that fixes your issue.

MemberI reinstalled bp to try to solve the fact that my forums page was blank. I never got the install wizard this time around. Is there a way to force that?

MemberCan anyone explain how upgrading to 1.6.1 might have caused WP to ‘lose’ my forums? And what I can do to help it find them. I’ve deleted and reinstalled fresh files, but no joy.
I’ve tried putting the absolute path to the bb-config.php (in the root of my WP install) into the Settings page and clicking on ‘use existing install’ but it says the file does not exist. My forums still don’t show up. HELP PLEASE!
Anyone?

Participant@mercime this was a fresh install, because I had problems after upgrading to WP 3.4.1 so I decided to start afresh. It is a single install. The only thing I did was import my backed up database, if that’s any help.

@mercime
Participant@zillabuggs to troubleshoot further, is this a new install or was it upgraded from BP 1.5+? If it was upgraded, was it working properly before the upgrade? Are you on single install or Multisite? If multisite, is BP activated in main site or secondary site?

So, Yes, i have BBpress installed as a plugin along with Buddypress. I felt it was required. Perhaps I’m confusing things?
