ok I understand though it could be clearer also on BP side, because for the login… they send to a WordPress login!
And all internet says that both bbPress and BuddyPress come from the same company!
I started by googling “free online forum platforms” and then saw there was a platform by wordpress… etc, and I finished here.

I could hardly arrive here… I have a free version wordPress site and cannot find where to download plugins, as I want to install a forum.
So I cannot install buddyPress nor bbPress!
I cannot even give my version of WordPress as I do not find where it is written… It is from december 2017.
And I could not even log in here with my log in informations from my WP site and had to recreate an account, so I dont even know if I have 2 accounts now, and why the BuddyPress site would not recognize my mail!
Quite discouraging as I used to run an SMF forum, so how much changed in 15 years?!!!

    Hey forum.

I have some questions. I have a community site with about 600 users. As I have let another guy run the site over time its all messed up with the design, plugins, etc etc. And now it seems like to big of a job to revert everything step by step. I got lost.

So I am thinking about deleting everything and build an new interface, new buddypress install, theme etc. BUT, how do I make sure that users, their profile info, forum posts etc not get deleted. I am not fluent in how databases work, what is stored where etc?

Could any of you Buddypress troopers give me some advice to the steps needed to be taken and waht to be mindful of? Link to any resources etc.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Terjemk

    Hi there,

Are your group email notifications delivered using the Group Email Subscription plugin? This forum is the wrong place to raise issues on that. However I had the same issue and it was down to an upgrade they made that needed some manual intervention.

Go to Settings>>Group Email Subscriptions and see that the migration has not completed. There’s a button to manually try it again. You will have to select this a couple of times but in the end it should work fine.

You’d need to ask in the bbPress forums for a definitive answer as they are the ones best place to answer questions relating to forums – https://bbpress.org/forums/.

However to the best of my knowledge bbPress forums ( as opposed to forums created in BuddyPress groups ) can only be created by site admin, users can’t create them and there is no front end interface to allow users to create forums on their own.

So you could place the link in the BuddyPress menu, but for most users it would come back as not allowed.

When I go to a Group, it defaults to the group’s home page. Nothing at all indicates that members can make “activity updates”. After searching all over I found in the right hand menu a link that says “Activity” and if they click on that, then they can add an update that then shows on the home page. Why can’t they just add updates right in the home page? I’d like for members to start making comments in the group but this seems cumbersome. Should I be adding a forum instead? Totally confused on the point of the activity feed.

Sorry, this forum is for BuddyPress support, Youzer is premium only so if you want to use it you would need to pay.

Ah, I see it. There were two groups pages created and only one was showing up.

Any thoughts on letting users create forums and topics?

HA HA HA HAAAAA! I knew as soon as I hit send, it didn’t make a lick of sense. Let me try again ????.

Buddypress and BBpress. In their “standard style”, the forum is basically in Grid form, (and that’s cool), but, I would like to break the grid form apart so that, say, when a Christmas Tree vendor post, the post has more style than just a grid. By “style” I mean that the forum doesn’t just have a grid format, rather more of a page layout. I am trying to come up with a way to keep the page more visually interesting to the general public, rather than the standard grid view, like this forum for instance. Not knocking standard forum stying, just looking away to jazz it up a bit.

Not sure what you are asking, but bbPress has their own forums.

imath might respond, but it is unlikely. They are rarely on these forums.

You’ll need to walk thru the code to see every step of how other tabs are handled.
I would look at the My Groups code.
It may well be an ajax issue.

If you find a solution, please update this topic.

If you check out my website you should see I’ve written a lot about the basics of BuddyPress, you should check it out, it should answer a lot of questions.

When you enable the BuddyPress Groups component you will be able to set up a Groups page, when this is viewed it will automatically show a Create Group link.

If you install bbPress you can enable group forums, that way your users get the option of addinga forum to their group.

Man, i could give you a (hug) right now! 🙂 Thanks a lot!

Now the question is i won’t be able to have the columns view and the round avatars of the members in legacy mode correct? I also have a question on how do members, if they so wish, start and create their own ‘forums’ and ‘groups’ in buddy press? What’s the process?

I’ve added Categories to Activities per this thread: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/add-category-field-to-buddypress-activity-4/

I see these categories turning up in the wp_bp_activity_meta table. I’m just not sure how to now filter my activity loop by these categories now.

Ultimately, I want a selection in the users profile to dictate what’s in their feed (e.g. only show me activity from my friends OR about this category) I’ve already got the activity feed filter by friends using: https://buddydev.com/support/forums/topic/friends-only-activity-stream/#post-1345

But right now I’m just looking for a steer on how to filter the activity loop. I’ll hopefully figure out how to make it a user option from there!

    Hi there, some answers:

    1. You can change the layout of profiles by overloading the profile files and css, see: https://codex.buddypress.org/themes/theme-compatibility-1-7/theme-compatibility-2/ it’s possibly a bit advanced for you right now but all the files in the plugins/buddypress/bp-templates/your-bp-theme/buddypress can be copied, modified and loaded from your child theme directory. Similarly you can overload the css to make styling and layout changes.

1b. The default is for horizontal navigation unless you’ve changed it in Customizer>>BuddyPress.

    2. The BuddyPress extended profile is editable from the front end, and avatar too. It’s only the wordpress profile that’s enditable in admin and most BP sites don’t use that as t’s really set up for authors.

    3. I recently posted the code to combine all the profile activity feeds into 1, https://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-combine-activity-tabs-to-one/

    4. https://wordpress.org/plugins/cb-change-mail-sender/

5+6 are bbPress questions, for the best answer you should post on their forum https://bbpress.org/forums/

    7. Assuming you have set up the groups directory page and enabled group creation by users in Settings>>BuddyPress>>Options, users will have the option to create groups on the Groups directory page and also from the Groups menu of the WordPress toolbar ( top right hand side of the screen, hover over your avatar image, drop down will appear one option will be groups.

We only do BuddyPress support here, for other plugins you should raise a request on their wordpress forum.

What you could do is install two factor authentication for your admin users:

    Two Factor Authentication

That might help. This is more of a general WordPress query so you might get better responses if you post to the WordPress forums.
