Inactive@anetz is correct Richard you can bypass installing BuddyPress all together if you just want the forum functionality. I actually like the bbpress forum plugin sitewide install. It just seems easier to keep track of but that also depends on what you use it for. Just don’t do multiple forums as Anetz specified.

MemberHello Richard,
Setting up buddypress or bbpress is quite easy, however you need to avoid some few general mistakes that a newbie makes.If what you want to do is just get a forum for your site then you don’t need to setup buddypress forums. You may instead go for bbpress forum plugin. { note: avoid using multiple forums such as bp group forums and sitewide forums togather}

Inactive1.) Are you using forums for groups, or site wide forums?
2.) Did you make sure the discussion forums box is checked in dashboard/buddypress/components.
3.) If you used forums for groups you have to create a group first. This can be done in the front end under groups as long as your logged in. After you created a group, then click forums and create a topic.
4.) If your using a site wide forum you need to go to dashboard/forums/new forum and create the page and name it, then publish it. Then it will show up in the front end under your forums navigation. Just name your Topic, give it a description, and at the bottom of the screen click submit.
5.) You may also need to create a custom menu in dashboard/appearance/menus. Create a new menu, name it, save it. Where it says Theme Locations Primary Navigation click the drop-down menu select the name of the menu you just created and click save. Below you can now select your all your pages, click the check box’s then click add to menu, and in the left you can drag them to the order you want to appear on your navigation, then save the menu. I hope this helps!March 8, 2012 at 12:22 pm #131029Sofian J. Anom

MemberI’m really sorry for dragging up an old thread but I just cannot get this to work! I also want to hide the home tab and make the forum tab default in the group pages.
I’m running WP 3.3.1 and BuddyPress 1.5.4 and have tried every code on here to no avail! Any help would be huuuugely appreciated!!
Thank you very much!

Participant@jamesmcbennett I looked at your members and forums directory and looks like something went awry with your HTML structure since last time you posted at the forums.
With regards to your question, add the following to your theme’s stylesheet:
`div#subnav.item-list-tabs {
margin: -15px 0 15px !important;
}`March 8, 2012 at 8:08 am #131014In reply to: Search forum/support

ParticipantI totally agree with you, I actually thought it was a bug BP had. The only way I can search is if the word or some word near what i am looking for, is listed on the hot tags widget. Maybe BP should have a tag page, with all the tag words (alphabetically) listed. I am sure that would be easy to set up.

Not sure what you mean. But since BuddyBoss is a premium theme, you should be able to get free support from the theme developers at http://www.buddyboss.com/forum/

MemberHello peeps just wondering if u can help me out. After doing a fresh install off buddy press it seems i can’t sign up new member profiles or any other component working i can enter by admin and set up new users but can’t register new users from the login or register page. I have followed step by step instructions but it seems it might have something to do with my permalinks. Buddypress installs with default url permalinks but when i was setting up buddy press it asked me to set up my permalinks. I chose php my admin but after setting up pages for buddy press which it asks u to assign a page to a catergory it seems the urls are the default permalink urls and not the ones for my site. My url permalink is http://localhost/xampp/wordpress/index.php/activity-streams/ The default set of links are:
Activity: http://localhost/xampp/wordpress/activity/
Members: http://localhost/xampp/wordpress/members/
Groups: http://localhost/xampp/wordpress/groups/
Forums: http://localhost/xampp/wordpress/forums/
Register: http://localhost/xampp/wordpress/register/ (registration must be enabled)
I have read so many turorials but none seem to point me in the right direction. Can someone help me out as i still can’t find an answer and i thought it was a simple plugin that worked out of the box LOLMarch 6, 2012 at 3:41 pm #130949snowlas
ParticipantI want to bump this because I think I’m very close to finally solving this for many of us, but it’s going to need someone who is better at reading PHP or understanding the BP Codex.
My activation links work if I register from BuddyPress, but not if I register from WordPress. Is everyone else doing the same?
Here is a link to the new thread in hopes to solve our problem.

ParticipantI have no idea. From Event Espresso’s support forums, it looks like something they’ve worked on since November. Now when Event Espresso go to 3.2 (it’s at 3.18) we may see a difference then.
I just stopped using Member Integration. I was already using Membership from WPMU Dev and all Member Integration was going to do was prefill information for me. But it didn’t work and I’m not heartbroken. Membership did a lot more for me.

KeymasterChek bb-config.php in your WP folder has the right database connection details. Check you’ve completed forum setup in wp-admin > BuddyPress > Forums. Then edit a group > admin > settings, disable forum (save), then reenable forum (save again), and try again.

Participant@thesurfinstitute Following is the simplest way to make your theme compatible:
If you’ve changed any of the BP template files in your theme folder, replace all of them for a clean slate by deleting the 6 BP folders in server – /activity, /blogs, /forums, /groups, /members, and /registration – then re-run Appearance > BP Compatibility. (make sure Sliding Door Child theme is activated before you run this)
A. Copy your theme’s header.php and Save As > header-buddypress.php
Open up header-buddypress.php and at the bottom of the file, below all other code, add this:
``Save file.
B. Create a BLANK sidebar-buddypress.php and add this line only
`
`
Save file.
C. Upload header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php to wp-content/themes/sliding-door-child/
D. Style modifications for BP templates – you might want to use some or all of styles listed in this page https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-dev-bp-template-pack-walkthrough-twenty-ten-bp-1-5/3/

ParticipantBuddyPress Followers plugin works only with BuddyPress plugin activated.
I recommend that you post at WordPress forums for assistance in seeking for plugin/s that would meet your needs. Before posting there, you might consider searching for such plugins first like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=follow

MemberOK, I feel pretty stupid.
To change the header menu you just go to Appearance > Menus, and create a custom Menu.
Yay!
