All of these things are possible. Search through the forums, a lot of what you ask has been asked before.

Did some aspect of your configuration change? What other plugins are you using? Have you verified that the new avatars are actually being uploaded to wp-content/uploads/avatars/? What happens when you try to visit the URL of one of the images directly?
@funkisockmunki if you change to bp-default theme and clear cache, does the problem persist or is it corrected?
@boone discovered a problem with the plugin. Was unable to attach files to replies to an existing topic, despite seeing the form. Attachments only worked on the first post of new topics.
Dug around a bit, it seems that your JS-based enctype fix was not being loaded on single group forum topic views. When I updated the code to make sure the script was running on those pages, the plugin worked once again.
So, if anyone else is having this problem, check to see if the scripts.js file is loaded into the page and running properly. Hopefully this will save you several hours of searching through code and checking network transmissions. 
Thanks for writing a great plugin, Boone Gorges. Hopefully this can be patched in future versions.

I’ve made no modifications to activity-loop.php.
For the moment, I can restrict activity for not logged in users by using s2member’s uri restrictions, but this is just a patch, there’s something funny going on here.

PS as an aside, I can’t access any forum topics I’ve started or replied to through my profile page *on this site*. Also can’t post activity updates or private messages to anybody. Can’t access forum replies via the menu at the very top of the page either.
Seriously – if the Buddy Press community would organize the forums and HOW to then a lot of these Q&A would be answered by folks reading.
BTW I tried to PM Boone Gorges about this and I can’t post any updates here at buddypress.org for some reason…
I am using BP 1.5.1 and am having this exact issue – is it still an issue or am I missing something? Private groups still populate the ‘my friends’ activity feed. Nonmembers can see the activity of their ‘friends’ in private groups in the activity feed. I’ve disabled the ‘all members’ tab in the activity feed because of this issue, so I can’t currently comment on whether private groups are showing up in the ‘all members’ filter.

Hmm, I’m assuming you mean the members and groups folders within my theme – in which case no, I just checked and there isn’t a plugins.php file in either one. There also isn’t one in forums, blogs or activity (not sure if that matters).
I’m curious, if everything works fine in all of my default tabs, why would I be looking specifically at members and groups? Also, where would I get the correct plugins.php files to place in these folders?

#1 and #2 I suggest you contact Headway theme devs/support as they know their complicated theme inside and out. Although I’m sure they know it by now, you can refer them to the BP Template Pack compatibility process – https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/wordpress-to-buddypress-theme/

I’m having exactly the same problem: users are not getting any mail.
I don’t have “login with ajax” plugin install but only “bp user profile map”.
I’m gonna try with a fresh installation on a different domain name…
If only this forum were more active… I’m surprised, it seems not that many people are interested in BuddyPress, too bad for us who LIKE it.
anyone? I’m thinking that i’m missing the default bbpress-settings-page, this should be a flick of a button right? (are there more settings than just wordpressadmin->settings>forums ? seems to me a small amount of settings for a forum).
Anyone found a fix to this yet?

Recommend building and activating a child theme of Trending then with the child theme activated, install and activate the BP Template Pack and go through the compatibility process.
Re: Can’t get to Support page
Go to admin dashboard menu BuddyPress > Pages > Directories – Discussion Forums and select -None- and click on Save button. Then run Settings > Permalinks to the year/month setting I set up earlier.
Forgive me @mercime but I did exactly what you told me not to do and now can’t get to the support page. I’m sorry. I have tried installing a different theme and then going back to the Buddypress default, but that doesn’t work – please save me!
@deschle: Did you actually get this to work somehow? I’d like to do the same for our site.

@mercime The problem with the Buddypress theme is that the menu headings disappear. I had two rows of menus, which have now vanished. Can you recommend any other Buddypress compatible themes which accomodate this and / or that look more appealing.

Graphene is a nice theme but spout out too many errors – from creating the sitewide forums index page where it required post thumbnails etc. to adding the page to main navigation where it included the shortcode used to generate the forum index page.
The sitewide forums is functioning http://www.meetinbradford.org/support/ using the bp-default theme.
Reminder: Do not click on Repair button in – “The following active BuddyPress Components do not have associated WordPress Pages: Discussion Forums”.
