October 30, 2009 at 4:30 pm #55486In reply to: autocomplete not functioning when composing message
Jeff Sayre
ParticipantActually, for me, autocomplete does not even work on BP.org. I composed a message a couple of days ago to DJPaul and JJJ–who are both friends–and the autocomplete was AWOL. I just tried again, and no dice.
There is also an issue with messages not getting sent which is being discussed here:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddpressorg-messages-broke
October 30, 2009 at 3:55 pm #55482gazouteast
ParticipantFound similar issues on the osCommerce forums related to javascript uploaders for images, and in the WordPress.org forums for the WP media Library’s flash uploader since v2.5
Although I’m not tech enough to solve this issue, it does absolutely appear to be related to the javascript cropper for uploaded images ….. AND NOTHING ABOVE HAS FIXED IT FOR ME
Please don’t trot out the “start your own thread” instruction – there is too much of the above posts that are pertinent and the problem is not resolved.
…. or do you want the same situation as the WP.org forums that have hundreds of report threads about this error? None of them resolved other than to point at the WP plugin to use the “no flash uploader” plugin.

Anonymous User 96400
InactiveYou need to put the var_dump stuff on its own line below your original date function

Just had a look at the forum functions and here’s what you need to do.
global $forum_template;
echo date("j", strtotime($forum_template->topic->topic_time));Let me know if it doesn’t work.

ParticipantThanks there Travel-Junkie
How exactly would I populate $topic?
It’s not that
<?php echo date("j", strtotime($topic->topic_time)); ?>
<?php echo date("M", var_dump($topic->topic_time)); ?>isn’t working entirely, it just gives me completely wrong numbers (1 JAN). And if I’ve done the var_dump right it indeed gives me a NULL.
Thanks again

Anonymous User 96400
InactiveHey,
actually, the j should only give you the day of the month and nothing more. If you want the day and the month you need to use “j M”.
The rest should work just as you wrote it if you have access to the variable $topic. Try this:
var_dump( $topic );and see what it outputs. If there’s nothing or NULL, then you’ll have to populate $topic first.

ParticipantJust completed a fresh install like you did Arghagain. Thought it was just my eyes that was trickerating on me!
Ahhh. Figured it out. Based upon what I read over here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/%C2%BFincluded-bbpress-in-buddypress-or-integrate-standalone-bbpress
You’ll realize that in the BuddyPress integrated lite bbPress, you have to create a group (analogous to forum title creation) and then you’ll be able to post topics to that group’s forum listings.
At least I think this is how it works!

ParticipantI never solved this and others seem to have the same kind of problem. I’ll try to rework the whole website so that I don’t need a primary blog.

MemberAnd the solution is….? Because…?
What’s the point of installing bbpress through BuddyPress if we cannot use it? The forum tab works but since there are no forums I cannot create any topics.
Should we install bbpress separatly to be able to use it at all?

Keymaster1and1 seem to have issues with WordPress MU. If anyone else uses 1and1 and has problem, search this forum for previous topics.

KeymasterWhere exactly are you trying to work this? Also, that’s just a IF statement; it may evaluate true or false but that line or itself won’t produce anything on the page.

ParticipantSure, will refer the codex for adapting to the new theme way John, thanks!
These are the links that I’m referring to, great documentation available to help users with all the info they need to switch to the 1.1 theme architecture :

Meanwhile, is there any alternative to bp_core_signup_do_signup() in BP 1.1.2?
Thanks,

ParticipantThanks a lo for your help, its working now.
I did it like this:
first I need to change the body class:
<?php
function new_body(){
return 'directory forums';
}
add_filter( 'body_class', 'new_body', 0, 2 );
?>and then I need to modify the index.php from the forum directory.
with the modified version I can call the forum directory everywhere.
<?php include (STYLESHEETPATH . '/directories/forums/index.php'); ?><?php
global $site_groups_template;
$defaults = array(
'type' => 'type=most-forum-topics&max=6',
'per_page' => 10,
'max' => 6
);
$r = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults );
extract( $r, EXTR_SKIP );
// type: active ( default ) | random | newest | popular
if ( $max ) {
if ( $per_page > $max )
$per_page = $max;
}
$site_groups_template = new BP_Groups_Site_Groups_Template( $type, $per_page, $max );
?>
<?php if ( $site_groups_template->has_groups() ) : ?>….

ParticipantBetter would be to use, the lite version (since this is already configured with buddypress), but if your looking for the old forums way, then you’ll have to install bbpress seperately and tweak it to get the buddypress looks.
I personally have both groups and normal forums, now I’m looking for a way to get the buddypress functions in bbpress.

ParticipantDJPaul, I am logging into my site http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin and when I login there I see nothing about just a BuddyPress section where it says Forums Setup. Where exactly are you talking about? This maybe why I am having a lot of problems with a lot of other stuff!

KeymasterThe data in the database is safe, but you’d go back to the old “deep integration” method of making them look and play nicely together. You could either rename the DB tables to use the bb_ prefix instead of wp_bp_, or you could specify wp_bp_ as the custom prefix during reinstallation of bbPress.
Then you’d go the same old route of using the integration plugins to share cookies, etc.
Your question also depends on whether or not you’re going to keep group forums. If yes, then group forums already know which forum_id they’re linked to, and BuddyPress will continue to use its own internal bbPress to write to and read from the DB, while your separate installation will be the one that works for your “forum root.” If you choose to ditch group forums, then you’ll want to visit your bbPress site-admin and rearrange and change your forum settings and descriptions to make more sense.
October 28, 2009 at 4:49 pm #55344r-a-y
KeymasterThis is something I’ve been pondering about myself.
It really depends on your community’s needs and how you anticipate growth.
If you like how buddypress.org has their forums, then you’d want a separate install of bbPress.
If you anticipate that you’d want other forums besides the ones created by groups, then you’d want a separate install of bbPress.
If you want more administrative control over your forums (moderation, plugins), then you’d want a separate install.
If you like the fact that forums are only created within the Groups infrastructure, then go with a “new install”. Positives about this approach is you wouldn’t have to modify your BP template often, whereas going with a separate install requires you to create a new bbPress template to match the rest of your site.
—
I have a question for the BP devs: let’s say I go with the new, integrated forum approach and want to switch back to my old, separate install… I’d probably have to restore a database backup as well as a backup of my files right?
