Whoa, that’s confusing because a user was plugging in my display/screen name, they would have no way of knowing the user name unless they look at the status bar path which the average user will never do. I guess the auto complete function will take care of that when it rolls out hopefully soon.

Thanks again for all the hard work here Andy. You and the team are doing some real inspirational work here with buddypress! Not only on the development and visual side, but also on being reactive the all the threads floating around your forums and answering them in a timely fashion.

I’m pretty sure this is planned to be included in the first official release. However, in the interim, you can install bbPress on its own and integrate it with WPMU no problem and use it as a general forum.

Hey Andy, I’m sure your busy getting the beta ready and all but just wanting to check the status of the group forums… is it looking likely that group forums will make the feature list for the Dec 15 beta or should we be looking to implement an alternative forum solution for now?

Appreciate all your hard work on BuddyPress… you’re making all our lives that much easier! ;-)

We’ve been working with Lisa Sabin Wilson of eWebscape who built a custom BuddyPress installation on our newly launched site http://www.weheartthis.com

(Andy – We love it so far and think it will really help us build a great community!)

Some of the biggest issues we’ve faced:

    1) IE issues – page alignment is off, toolbars do not work, lots of 404 messages (we’ve encouraged our members who use IE to download Firefox or Safari instead, fingers crossed that the official release will help with some of these bugs)

    2) We have the same avatar cropping issue as mentioned by other posters – it’s very hit or miss for us, sometimes it works fine, sometimes it just can’t be done at all)

    3) The browser title bar will read, “oops, that’s a 404 page” or “nothing found for ____” even when it isn’t a 404 page or it has found something.

    4) We have installed BBpress forums as well. The password and login of our member works for both applications, but members need to login at second time when they land on the forum main page (even if they have already logged in earlier)

Thanks (and any feedback on the site is appreciated.)

The Recent Blog Posts and the Site Wide Activity widgets both have code that restricts them to blog id 1.

The Recent Blog Posts widget lives in the mu-plugins/bp-blogs/bp-blogs-widgets.php file. There are two of those nasty blog id 1 checks at line #8 and line #30. Same thing exists in the mu-plugins/bp-activity/bp-activity-widgets.php file.

If you want ‘News’ to work in the home theme then modify themes/buddypress-home/functions.php on lines #49-#50. I just commented them out.

I’m guessing that the thinking behind this restriction is “Get it to work first, then get it to work everywhere”. Kinda like narrowing the possibilities for problems that are gonna exist anyway, down to something trackable. If you browse the forums here and on wpmu you quickly see that wpmu can be installed in about 97 different ways on 205,478 hosts. Slap on a major component like buddyPress, then let noobs like me loose upon the face of the world who want to play with my toys ‘my way’ and I understand the thinking. :)

That is part of the roadmap and I believe it will be in the first release of buddypress as well.

Is wpmu installed in the document root? Nothing but problems otherwise. So I hear from reading threads here in the forums.

Not sure about a group blog, but there is going to be a group forum. It isn’t done yet, but is on the list of upcoming features.

Yes BP is designed to work on $blog_id = 1 but there is no reason you can’t copy the widgets and create your own.

Perhaps in future versions of BuddyPress, you will be able to set where you want BuddyPress to be hosted along with the ability to set widgets as global or single blog.

(we also would like to let our future users use some of the widgets – but are working on a few other bits and pieces atm – I might create a patch when I free up some time)

I have searched the forums to answer this question with no success – but I hope I am not repeating a topic.

I really like everything about BuddyPress and its users – social networking for social people, I think I speak for everybody when I say ‘ask your question anyway and someone will try and answer’ :)

Im also using a bbPress Forum with it…..forum.iBlogle.de

And the Ipod Touch News Blog iTouchable.de is also hosted by BuddyPress with its own bbPress forum…forum.iTouchable.de

And all these Sites are usable with only one Account….although ive a little problem with the cookie sharing between the TLD….so one has to login into both pages!

This is a known issue and an official fix is in the works, but in the meantime here’s a solution to improve the bar in IE7:

In terms of privacy of seeing profiles, this is coming in a later version by default, but for now, you can do what I proposed at the following:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=160

It just makes the entire buddypress-member theme from being no viewable by anyone but logged in members. The buddypress-home theme still is available for signups though.

https://buddypress.org/forums/search.php is the correct link for the forum search function. Why it isn’t linked on the forum or in the sidebar I don’t know but that’s where you can access it at.

Thanks ron_r but I don’t think that link works:

    404: Not Found

Seems as though we couldn't find what you're looking for. You may have come from an old outdated link.

Use the menu above to find your way.

I’m sure google is on this, so we can just google site:buddypress.org

I have used Media Temple for WPMU sites in the past and the Grid is better than most shared hosts, but really WPMU itself can grow past resources quickly. That is why VPS or dedicated is recommended, though many still say they are fine on a shared host if their bandwidth and userbase is low. Other great VPS providers include Slicehost.com and Futurehosting.biz

Getting recommendations for hosts is covered extensively in the WPMU forums, so you might want to pop by for a search there.

    In reply to: Group Administration

    Wardee

I am considering creating a social network, and I wish to pre-define the groups, which would therefore provide structure to the forum topics within groups. If the network members were allowed to create groups, I see potential overlap (in my particular community) in topics, discussions, etc. I wish to keep it simple to my own pre-defined groups or groups I choose to add in the future. Quoting from About Buddy Press:

“Groups also include a group forum (bbPress), wire, and photo gallery. These features can be selectively disabled by group creator.”

When I enable the group forum, I believe that limiting group creation will keep forums more organized and therefore, more easily navigated by members.

    So that’s why.

If this isn’t possible, then I would ask, is it possible to use the forum without the groups? Or would that entail a separate installation of bbPress?
