This sounds like a basic jQuery+WordPress question and not necessarily a BuddyPress-specific question. You will need to do a couple of things to pull this off:

1) Enqueue jQuery
2) Write/copy-and-paste a jQuery script that limits the number of characters in a specific field. Then enqueue that script

Start here (https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script) and know that there will be a bit of a learning curve!

Hello,

I’m interested in preventing users from entering more than some set character limit (say, 300 characters) in one or all of the custom profile fields I’ve set up. I’ve seen a few threads here and on StackExchange saying one needs to either use HTML or Javascript, but I haven’t been able to figure out exactly where (specific Buddypress files and line numbers) to make these changes. I’d prefer to limit characters on the user input side of things, not just let them enter as much as they want but limit how much I display.

Would some kind soul walk me through how I might do this, assuming out-of-the-box latest versions of WP and BP? I’m thinking I need to make changes somewhere inside buddypress/bp-xprofile, but haven’t been able to get anything to work… e.g.
– this StackExchange thread (http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/36159/how-to-limit-character-length-in-buddypress-function-output) doesn’t tell me exactly which files/lines to alter, so I haven’t been able to get its solution to work
– haven’t been able to figure out this Javascript solution (linked in another thread on this forum)–where to place the function and textarea code, and do I replace existing code?

Pertinent specifics:
Wordpress 3.4.2, running locally via MAMP
Buddypress 1.6.1 (latest stable release) installed
Using the standard BuddyPress Default theme

I have the huddle theme for wordpress. I have a issue with profile fields viewing

…johnny… Ok for some reason it’s not showing what I am talking about but it has a html link instead of name

How can this be fixed? I tried the extended options to not allow automatic linking and still not working.
Please help me?

Hi, I’m new to BuddyPress, am curious and wondered if someone could shine a light…

If I understand it correctly…
— A BuddyPress user is exactly the same thing as a WordPress user.
— But some of the user fields are editable by admin in WordPress’ Users settings…
— … whilst there is another set of profile fields that, whilst admin can create and edit the fields themselves, the information can only be edited by relevant users on the client side.
?

Why is the containment of user profile info split in this way and not accessible in one place?
Why, as an admin, can’t I access and edit all user info?

Is there any good documentation or reading matter? The Codex is rather spartan.

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for a Tumblr plugin, same as the twitter/facebook and google+ plugin that already excists.
One that will Mirror a field on the User Profile Fields and return a Tumblr button so people can add their Tumblr blog to their profiles.

Atm I can only let them add a manual link, but it would be a lot better if it were the same layout for Tumblr as for the other 3 social media’s.

Hope someone can help me out here.

I’d like the background colour for the navigation menus and the profile fields to be either black, or better still, transparent.

Is this possible? I’ve looked over the style sheet etc, but can’t find the function for this. If I view the source code for the page above, I can see the instruction for the background to be ‘rgb(254, 254, 254)’, but… can’t find that instruction anywhere in the css.

If I can fix that, then… I believe… we’re done.

No, this is not part of a Group/Group Forums at all. /Luciano/profile/edit/group/1/ refers to the first group of Profile Fields. As you can create more profile fields based on your community, you can also create more than one group of Profile Fields to organize profile information – https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-buddypress-components/#users-profile-fields
– Note that all the fields you add in the first group of Profile Fields will also show up in the Registration Form if you have that enabled. Those in the 2nd group or so will only show up in e.g. /Luciano/profile/edit/group/2/ and /Luciano/profile/edit/group/3/ if you have more than one or two groups of Profile Fields.

@ronnie_fantastic Looking good.

1. Missing BuddyPress styles: Go to Appearance > BP Compatibility. and uncheck “Disable BP Template Pack CSS”
– you need the BP template pack CSS to properly align the BuddyPress sections.

2. Enable registration: Go to Settings > General and look for the line where you allow registration (it’s off by default)

3. “It has what looks like a 2 cell table with ‘Base’ written above it and the name/username within”
– This is the Profile page and it shows profile fields. BP Codex is your friend https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-buddypress-components/

Has this changed at all since you last posted?
I had the same question and got here.
I am new to BuddyPress. It seems ridiculous that a site admin couldn’t alter profile details of a user on his site.
In my case, I want to pre-populate a site with an set of guaranteed users whose info I want to enter for them.
Surely, if BuddyPress was just a part of WordPress alongside it, all BuddyPress user profile info should be accessible and editable under WordPress user profile admin, not just the core WordPress fields?

We had the registration all set up to send out an email. As we added, and tested, each plugin, we would test the registration process. We have WP 3.4.1, the latest BP and the latest Membership from WPMUDEV. We backed up after every change we made. After the last change, where we were trying to change profile fields, we noticed the emails no longer were being received after registration. We went back to the prior backup. Same results. We went back to the backup before that. Same results. We are contacting WP, BP, WPMU DEV and our hosting site in the hopes that someone can answer us. Why aren’t the emails working, even after going to an earlier backup when we knew it was working? Please help! We are at a complete loss!

I’m trying to create an array of all xprofile fields (not specific to a user) created by the site admin. What’s the easiest way to get at that?

UPDATE:
I solved this in what I think is probably the easiest way, using the global $groups like the loop in bp-xprofile-admin.php does within the function xprofile_admin(). It’s a pretty simple statement after all.

I think a better bet is to collect that info on the BP registration page and then not display it on the user profile (that way you’ll still be able to use it in other ways). With BP 1.6. you can change the visibility of each xprofile field to friends only, logged-in users, or public (and force that level or allow the user to override your selection). (Visible to admin only is coming in BP 1.7, btw, which would totally fix you up.) At the moment, you can modify your theme template file (themes/yourtheme/members/single/profile/profile-loop.php) to hide some fields like this:

Hi

I’m wondering if anyone has any experience in integrating the buddypress xprofile fields with Woopra’s custom visitor data?

I’m currently using Membership plugin to restrict certain content on my site to members only. Users have to complete a registration form to become a member. The registration/profile fields are created using the Buddypress xprofile feature. I have also installed Woopra for tracking user activity. The Woopra wp plugin sends user profile data to Woopra after a subscriber has logged in but this only includes name, avatar and email. I would like to also send the custom reg data created by buddypress.

I understand its possible just to edit the woopra plugin to add the fields I’ve created?

If anyone can help that would be awesome

Fields are hidden on a profile until a user edits their profile and adds something to that field.

Hi, we have installed a plugin – WP-Approve User on the site, which queues all applications for joining the site pending approval. Currently the setting is: Membership = “Anyone can register”, and new user default role = “Inactive”. This arrangement is working well; however we have a set of additional profile fields in the ‘base group’, where we compulsorily require prospective members to enter data. Would like to know how the site admin can take a look at what data was filled in in the additional fields, before deciding who is a genuine applicant and who is a potential spammer. Is this possible?

Sure thing @modemlooper. The code below will look for all the custom fields that a user has filled in, compare them to what should be visible for the currently logged-in user and then loop and display the forum reply user’s data. Instead of simply looping the default titles and data of the xprofile fields, I do a custom switch/case so that I can format each field individually for more control.

@modemlooper thanks! I used a combination of your tips and info I found here https://bpdevel.wordpress.com/2012/03/16/profile-field-visibility-in-bp-1-6/ to make this work for me. I now have any custom field in Buddypress show up in my forums loop and it shows up conditionally as well for the appropriate users only.

I need to include some line breaks in my profile descriptions, but it appears any HTML included in the descriptions get stripped out. I also tried a carriage return (n), but that just printed an “n” in those spots. Is it possible to get line breaks in there?

To be clear, I’m talking about the profile field descriptions, not the field data itself.

You have to pass id # of field a string wont work.

`$data = xprofile_get_field( 2, bp_displayed_user_id() );

This will not give you a members choice. It will only return the default visibility you set up in admin. to get a users visibility on a field you get from user meta.

`$user_visib = get_user_meta( bp_displayed_user_id(), bp_get_user_meta_key( ‘bp_xprofile_visibility_levels’ ), true );
