    Okay…I have more details from my testing. It works now, but I am not really sure WHY. It seems to me that you have to (for some reason) call the get_field_data function (even if its on a useless peice of data) before you can use the set_field_data function.

    If you notice from my post above…the only thing that is different is that I have added a new variable that is simply capturing the Name field (number 1). Well when I add this:

    $nametestfield = xprofile_get_field_data(1,$wpuid);

    And then the set_field after it (with my age variable)…than it starts working, and the field is inputted.

    SO….Is there a reason why you can’t call the set_field independently. Calling in the name is basicaly useless in the function above, but it DOES make the whole thing work for some reason.

    ///////////////////////////////

    function BP_Insert_Test($wpuid, $age) {

    $age = ‘tester gender’;

    $nametestfield = xprofile_get_field_data(1,$wpuid);

    echo(‘user name exists already’ . $wpuid . ‘ and userdata is ‘ . $age);

    echo(‘Need Field is’ . $nametestfield);

    xprofile_set_field_data(2, $wpuid, $age);

    }

    For some reason…no matter what I try, I can’t inject SPECIFIC variables via the xprofile_set_field_data function….I run this function (below)

    ONLY AFTER running two conditionals to make sure

    /////////

    ONE the buddypress globals are set

    and

    TWO the check for the xprofile function passes

    Both conditionals pass (as expected) then go to my test function below

    ////////

    End result — The echo statement appears correctly…but nothing is appearing in the field values for the user – I am pulling my hair out??????

    Sample

    ////////

    function BP_Insert_Test($wpuid, $age) {

    $age = ’22’; // Should appear in the profile

    echo(‘user id is ‘ . $wpuid . ‘ and userdata is ‘ . $age);

    xprofile_set_field_data(2, $wpuid, $age);

    }

    Any ideas?

    I’m attempting to do something kinda similar. I just want to create a block (pardon my Drupal lingo) that shows a blog’s author information in my theme. I want to specifically show their BP custom fields.

    Right now I’ve copied over bp-sn-parent/profile/profile-loop.php to my theme and called: locate_template( array( 'profile/profile-loop.php' ), true ) but this gives me everything in the user’s profile. I would like to get a little more granular and just specify certain fields. hmmm

    Here is my current example as it exists.

    I have this same issue. The blog name bears no resemblance to the username. There’s no reference to any blog in the profile fields.

    WPMU 2.8.4a

    BuddyPress 1.1

    It was not solved by itself overnight.

    Andy let me ask you….I am playing with the bp-facebook plugin you ported, and specifically trying to add a value to the insert function you have in there now

    function bp_fbconnect_insert_data( $user_id, $usermeta )

    ///////I tried setting an extra value inside that function – statically for now (just for testing) right under the default “full name” insert you have in there now.

    I set it up like this:

    xprofile_set_field_data(‘Age’, $user_id, ‘Test’);

    I have tried setting with double quotes, no quotes, and several different ways, but it never seems to insert into the “Age” field I created in Buddypress.

    Any ideas whats going wrong here? I am wondering if this function isnt firing at the right time? OR maybe I am making a stupid mistake :)

    Thoughts? Thanks

    Hey,

    is there a way to call specific profile fields within the profile loop instead of only calling groups of profile fields?

    I am creating a new template and want to position each profile field separately. I only managed to do this with whole profile-field-groups by putting the group id into the loop. it didn’t work with field-ids though.

    thanks in advance

    Well, I found that in the BP-blogmeta table the blog in question only had one row (last_activity), but not the Name and Description fields, so I added them manually and now they appear.

    I have no idea why they were not added in the first place though…

    Oh, and he was also missing from the bp_user_blogs table, have added that too and now his profile shows his blog.

    Hope this can be useful for others with the same problem,

    Cheers

    I just noticed I have the same problem. I am not sure if this is a bug as maybe not all admins check the old sign-up page?

    I had renamed it to stop splogs, but after the BP installation (1.1, from scratch, with new standard themes), the register pages shows the entire form, including extra profile fields, but the ‘regular’ sign-up page only shows up half (see http://biketravellers.com/wp-newblog.php )

    What is going on? No errors, it just stops halfway.

    Cheers

    Hi; I think that the “Name” field in the Base group of the profile should be changed to Username; because it is a little confusing.

    And then add First Name and Last Name fields.

    It would be great to be able to sort the members with their first or last name !

    Thanks DJ

    Reinstalled bbpress once again and it seems to respond now.

    Still can’t get the Profile Field questions to show up for new users.

    I think I’m missing something small.

    Sounds like your MySQL database connection details aren’t proper. However, if the rest of your WPMU site works…

    Was your previous bbpress install in a seperate database? (i.e. not in the same one as wpmu/buddypress)

    Installed 1.1 BP over 1.1 rc and followed all instructions. 2 problems.

    1–The profile field setup was made and new users on fresh computers were not asked to “sign up”

    2–Forums setup

    from the dashboard I receive this message:

    Forums Setup

    bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly……

    But when I hit the Forums button on the home page I get this message (same as 1.1rc):

    $bb->custom_user_table = “wp_users”; $bb->custom_user_meta_table = “wp_usermeta”; $bb->uri = “http://net4us.us/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/”; $bb->name = ” Forums”; $bb->wordpress_mu_primary_blog_id = 1; define(‘BB_AUTH_SALT’, “982f93132e170a0a9d214e41336f56f1e6e399f705c8be7c5d96b411d040b4c4”); define(‘BB_LOGGED_IN_SALT’, “93b707990b272c6c02a866b3b67106d16ab91fb5c6ee1d5c984a524f791f7af1”); define(‘BB_SECURE_AUTH_SALT’, “dcac4305f1581dbd1f27313c4d629ec2fac65749ecf57895230316b7efead55c”); define(‘WP_AUTH_COOKIE_VERSION’, 2); ?>

    Hey everybody,

    I did a quick search about group types and it looks like this hasn’t come up yet. I basically want there to be a few different types of groups, e.g. normal user groups like we have now and then a special type for organizations (or even more types for different kinds of organizations). Advantage would be that we then could filter for one group type and display the returned data on the homepage for example.

    Ideally I’d like to be able to give people the option to register as a normal user or as an organization. When an organization registers, they automatically get a group set up for them with some extra information to be filled out, like their adress.

    Does anybody know of any component that does this or something similar? No point in reinventing the wheel! I guess I could assign different roles to the various group types and then show extra group profile fields depending on the role. I’d imagine there are plenty of hooks provided for such a case (I’ll have to look into that…).

    Anyways, I’ll be glad for any pointers in the right direction!

    Cheers,

    Boris

    I’ve upgraded to BP 1.1 on WPMU 2.84. Finally seem to have it running relatively smoothly. Using a custom WP theme that I adapted slightly to work with BP. But if I enable the Custom Profiles component, the entire profile widget does not appear on the user’s profile. The fields still exist (I can edit them) they just don’t display. If I disable the Custom Profiles, the profile widget shows up and displays the user’s name.

    I’ve tried switching to the default BP theme, but the same thing happens. Any ideas why this is? Thanks for your help.

    OK Andy solved this one for me in this thread. The answer is this: xprofile_get_field_data( $field_name_or_id, $user_id );

    Where $user_id is (in this case) $member and $field_name_or_id is (in my case) 61. I got the number by looking at the Profile Field I was after in Firefox with the Web Developer toolbar and it showed me the number in the class. I can’t work out another way of seeing a custom profile field’s id.. Off we go!!!

    Okay, I have been browsing the site up and down…and I feel like I am missing something obvious…sorry if it has already been answered, but I couldnt find it.

    What is the best approach (is there a function or api) to access custom fields within a plugin I want to create….or do I have to do it through sql directly.

    Lets say I setup a plugin that wants to evaluate whether to do something based on the age of a member. The age is a custom text field I created in the profile field setup in the buddypress admin….

    How can I actually get & set THAT custom xprofile data for use in the plugin?

    If this sets the display_name

    xprofile_set_field_data( BP_XPROFILE_FULLNAME_FIELD_NAME, $usermeta[‘display_name’], $user_id );

    Then is there something that is similar to set data to a “custom” field like my age example…and vice versa, whats the best way to “get” the data too

    I hope my question is clear, but if it isnt please let me know

    Thanks!

    Ok so I solved some of the problems I had by deactivating BP, deleting it, and manually deleting any tables prefaced with wp_bb or wp_bp.

    I installed it from the plugin browser in WPMU 2.8.4 and followed these instructions in the plugin browser screen:

    Installation

    BuddyPress requires WordPress MU, it will not work on a single install of WordPress (yet).

    — Plugins: —

    1.

    Upload everything into the “/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/” directory of your installation.
    2.

    Activate BuddyPress in the “Plugins” admin panel using the “Activate Site Wide” or “Activate” link (both work).

    — Themes: —

    1. Move “/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-sn-parent” and “/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default” to “/wp-content/themes/”

    You must then login as an admin and head to the “Site Admin > Themes” directory and activate the default BuddyPress theme (bp-default).

    Next, you will want to head to the “Appearance” menu and activate the BuddyPress default theme for the root blog of your WordPress MU installation.

    — Upgrading from an earlier version: —

    1.

    Backup!
    2.

    Overwrite the /plugins/buddypress/ directory with the latest version.
    3.

    If you are using the default theme, move the themes in “wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/” to “wp-content/themes” and overwrite any existing themes.
    4.

    VERY IMPORTANT: If you are no longer using the old two-theme system from BuddyPress 1.0, please make sure to delete your /wp-content/bp-themes/ folder to activate the new one-theme setup.

    — Forums Support —

    To enable forums please log in and head to “BuddyPress > Forums Setup” in the admin area.

    Installation worked great in that everything shows up where it needs to, I’m not getting error messages or 404s.

    However!

    I tried to test it out by editing my profile and creating a group.

    No Base fields show up, under “Edit Profile” and Profile Field Setup in WPMU control panel shows nada. When I try to create a group I get “There was an error saving group details, please try again.”

    I took a look at phpmyadmin, it created wp_bb tables but no wp_bp tables. So basically it installed. Sort of?

    Help?

    On Profile Field Setup -> there used to be options to add prebuilt fields eg: country, language, etc

    where did that go?

    Or, how do I add country field quickly. The thought of typing out all the countries doesnt excite me AT ALL :)
