In reply to: How to make Buddy Press Compatible with Theme
minigamersParticipantHello.
I’ve installed buddypress and the only error given was that related to bb-config.php location, but i cancelled bp-forums because i don’t need it.
My problem is that i can’t create groups.
I have the groups section, i’ve even installed groups pages plugin and still can’t do it.
On my profile page it showes me group section also but still can’t create groups.
I have other questions related to buddypress but i realy need to get somewhere with this one first.June 13, 2013 at 5:54 pm #165964In reply to: [Resolved] 404 message when trying to edit profile
tribblehunterParticipantWoo Hoo!
Thank you for the advice @mercime. I now have a dev buddypress to play with.
XAMPP worked fine once I removed IIS and other things which were causing conflicts.
Starting new thread for the other questions….

You can try this plugin which also has a premium version with more features. Not sure if it will meet your requirements but you can give it a try. Get it here:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-custom-profile-menu/Or try this method if your adventurous which I haven’t tested:

@mercimeParticipantPeace.
@dmd54 I can understand your frustration with a problematic installation and know that you want help asap. Remember though all who help out in the forums are volunteers from all over the world with different ways of responding to questions posted here. What’s kosher for some may be impudent to others. Moving on…i have the register page set to my sign up page but nothing appears.
– You mean you created a blank page with title/slug for registration, and then assigned that page to Registration in Settings > BuddyPress > Pages, right?
– What do you mean when you say nothing appears? Is it white screen in front and no source view or do you just see the title Register (or slug you chose) and no registration forms below?
– Are you on MAMP, WAMP, or XAMPP?
– Are you using a custom theme or have you tried using Twenty Twelve theme or the BP Default theme?
– Yes Register page and Activate page are separate because each page has a different function.June 2, 2013 at 3:48 pm #165238In reply to: URL for Menu to Logged-in User's Profile Page
TracyByrneParticipant@bp-help
You so seriously ROCK!
One question though, how do I mod that content (guessing in the wp_nav_menu_items) to tell it exactly which menu or sub menu I want this to display in? This code makes “My Profile” show up on all of my menus (there’s the top of page one, the one under my masthead and the one at the bottom of the page in the footer). Having footer duplicated is great, but having it duplicated in the two top menu’s together looks really bad lol.
I’d like to begin to seriously understand this code, so please if you can tell me what part of it needs modding and how, so that I can begin to understand and have to ask fewer questions later on, that would be spiffy!
Again, thanks this was wonderful I’m so excited 🙂
May 27, 2013 at 4:16 pm #164889In reply to: Privacy in BuddyPress
bp-helpParticipant@janogu
BuddyPress now has profile privacy built in for individual field visibility. BuddyPress Activity Privacy plugin is great at controlling who see’s individual activity posts. https://github.com/bphelp/private_community_for_bp does a decent job of locking down BP pages for logged out visitors. BuddyMobile is great for providing users of mobile devices an app like version of BP. So in conclusion I would say BP privacy has come along way since 2010. It would be nice if more of those features were built into the core in future versions but I am not sure that it would be something the core team would undertake at this point in development. The plugins I mentioned are in the repository with the exception of Private Community For BP in which I provided the GitHub link. Hope this answers your questions. Cheers!May 24, 2013 at 8:56 am #164690In reply to: [Resolved] Avatar in second blog MS not working

May 24, 2013 at 8:54 am #164689In reply to: Multi-Site, multi-network questions
afjsystemParticipantthis thread answer my question.
The user can login to any network using username and the password using theirs at main blog.
But, the avatar like mercime said. its only per site. User HAVE TO upload avatar again on each network.May 23, 2013 at 7:59 pm #164649In reply to: Multi-Site, multi-network questions
tsinclair1982ParticipantPlease help me get this straight in my mind, i need to reduce it to writing before i go find a developer to help.
I need multi-site, multi-network buddypress and wordpress. SINGLE signin point of entery and then multi private networks. Some networks may have top level domain and some maybe “behind” a website hosted on wordpress.
Is this a possible layout?
Thanks
May 22, 2013 at 7:57 pm #164547In reply to: Capabilities Editor
Ben HansenParticipantthe problem is that the capabilities do not actually exist like they do for bbpress and wordpress maybe you should try to ask your questions after the next devchat. @jjj mentioned that they do want to add them at some point in the future perhaps you can pitch in if you are eager to make it happen.

May 15, 2013 at 3:46 am #164010In reply to: Missing Profile Fields
ebraxton30ParticipantThank you for responding.
I answered the version of Buddypress when you directed me to respond to all of the questions after my initial inquiry.
I did troubleshoot in Twenty Twelve as well as the BP Default theme and still am experiencing the same issues.
The reason I did not consider this to be an issue with the plugins and perhaps a question of character max level, is because I have created several test profiles and am not experiencing this problem. These profiles were created in the same exact way as the true NEW user profiles. That is what I meant by “test profiles.” So…I will ask again…Is it possible that there is a limit on the number of characters available in a profile? Or, is there some sort of pagination option? I would provide the URL but it is an intranet site for and I do not want to include it here. Could I possibly send you a personal message?
Thank you in advance for your help.

shanebpModeratorIt’s easy to display profile fields in the Dashboard.
Editing the fields on that screen requires additional custom work.
If that is something you need, please go to

it was a direct install, not an upgradeMay 3, 2013 at 8:47 am #163321In reply to: Buddypress 1.7.1 theme compatibility not working
Tammie ListerModeratorA few questions if that’s ok to try and work out what is going on.
1. Did your theme work for BuddyPress before you updated BuddyPress? If so it could be your theme is causing the issues.
2. What template is being used for the site rendering – is it single.php or page.php or another page?April 30, 2013 at 3:11 pm #163103In reply to: [Resolved] Not able to get 'Create Group button'
watercolourzParticipantThe problem is solved, now still puzzled with second question i.e. what sort/ types of questions does BP Courseware caters to?
Does it allow to create following types of questions ?
1. Multiple Choice
2. Match the following
3. Short answers
and so on like moodle.April 30, 2013 at 10:56 am #163080In reply to: "sculpting" bp
Tammie ListerModeratorMy first suggestion would be to do some user research. If you work there you can probably brain storm what you’d want from the site as a starting point. If you don’t then select 3-4 user types from the range of users that use them. A type can be gender, age, role, capability – something that makes them unique from other types. A simple format would be to interview / survey what they want from a site. Face to face for this rocks but you may need to do remotely depending on your situation.
Once you have these user types you can see the paths through your site and the user journeys needed. You can even create fake profiles for these user types – make them real in your mind. Think about what tools/ components will enable those journeys – what they need and want to accomplish. Write a list. That’s what should form the site.
Once you have this ‘shopping list’ you could even run it past your user group from the test (if you have one). Nothing like checking usefulness. I usually at this point create a site map using something like Balsamiq or another visualisation tool. This is setting the foundation and giving you an overview before you move onto fun stuff like wireframes.
From this list you probably will also get a list of functionality that you need plugins for (if you do). Do they want to upload documents (a common intranet request)? And so on…
That’s just a starting point but will create a picture for you.
A few other questions worth asking:
– Do you want a social network or do you want a community? A social network is purely connections and whilst can be part of a community isn’t one by itself. A community has deeper relationships and activities such as forums, working towards goals, a whole range of other actions beyond just a stream and friending. Do you want this to become their company home? Do you want this to be a full blown intranet or simply a social network?
– Do you need groups? Are there going to be enough people to create groups (nothing as sad as lots of 1-2 people groups fragmented just to use groups).
– How/who is going to maintain this? If you want a community it needs curation. Whatever format you go with you need moderation, encouragement.Just a point, when you say editing won’t work. You can in your theme create templates and those won’t get overwritten. This would be the recommended way. I’d say you should be doing this if you want a custom site not just the theme compatibility default version.

Try this technique:

Pay attention to nickf ‘s usage. It uses jquery so if your not familiar with it then you need to study:

careythegreenParticipantOK @bphelp – I’ve discovered some of my own answers. I see that the @name is the user name they chose and cannot be changed. And… I just noticed the grey area of options below the standard WP options, which of course are the options for buddypress. So… poking around long enough I’ve answered my own questions.
April 29, 2013 at 5:26 pm #163012In reply to: S2member integration? – a few questions
careythegreenParticipantI appreciate that… but it’s not exactly what I’m asking. I think I’ve discovered that if I add a new user in the WP dashboard and then I can just give them the username and password I’ve created and send them to http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin – they can login without going through PayPal.

April 27, 2013 at 7:56 am #162860Hugo AshmoreParticipant@knromaine This isn’t really a question regarding BuddyPress, this ‘page’ isn’t a buddypress’ page it’s a WP page which is using the WP reading settings to set it as the page to use for your index or frontpage, this will have the effect of removing the default view WP provides of the primary posts loop display from your frontpage (so a further page is required that says where wp shows blog post loops) and also removes or changes the buddypress default frontpage view of showing the Activity stream. What is intended to be shown on this new page we can’t say that is dependent on what your theme provides and as such it’s to the theme authors that you ought to address further questions on this aspect of your site.
