ParticipantActually, to answer some of my own questions, it seems item_id is only the group id for a first message (which these types of message will always be).
secondary_id is used if there’s a reply/comment to a message, so for these purposes I can keep it as 0.
And the mptt values get updated with new replies and comments, so, again, for first messages such as the ones I’ll be inserting, a value of 0 for everything should be fine.
Would still like to know if there’s a BP function I can use to do the job though – and any potential pitfalls I might be missing. I am by no means an experienced coder…
Cheers

Participant@mercime thanks for that.
But when I change the subject of the Activation Email it does not change anything. The subject is the same as before.
Also there is no option to send a welcome email. Only a welcome private message, which isn’t what I was looking for because I wanted to provide them with their username and password in the email (and obviously they’d need that to login and see the private message).
Is there any other ways to get this done?

WebEndev
ParticipantHi JJJ,
Hmmmm…
This is my first BP site so please forgive the seemingly ignorant statements and questions 🙂I thought that BP created the Member role when it was first installed?
It is possible that another plugin I use did, but I’m not sure…
I definitely did not add_role for Member myself…
So you are saying that BP never created a ‘Member’ role at any time (i.e. it is not a default role for BP)?I just tested on the site. In addition to to not being able to see the WP Toolbar, the users with Role = ‘No role for this site’ cannot post activity, etc in BP (as I guessed since they have no Capabilities.

ParticipantOk, I’m getting this now and have some new questions.
1: How can I list all of the different blogs somewhere? Not necessarily most popular but all blogs in some form of list that people can look through.
2: How can I make some of the plugins non network? There doesn’t seem to be any option for making network available or not?
3: Same as above but for widgets.
4: I see that users can access their blogs once logged in, however, the network administrator needs to set up blogs for users. Is there a way to allow users to create their own blogs after they have registered?
5: BuddyPress – I installed BP from the network admin however, all of the plugins seem to be networked again? Is this so that blog owners can have the forums which are a part of BP or something else? I was wanting to make BP available only on the main site.
PS: I realize some of these questions are WP so no requirement to respond on those and I can post them there. Just figured I’d ask 🙂

KeymasterDon’t worry, that was my final question for you guys.
You can be mad, or you can have compassion for the umpteen other fires we put out on a daily basis. Repeatedly pinging us to answer questions for you, that you could answer yourself by checking out trunk, doesn’t help us get 1.7 released sooner, it only makes us your search engine. 🙂

@mercime
ParticipantGoing back to your first post, anyone who creates a group is the admin of the group by default (no plugin needed) so therefore has admin rights including setting privacy level to uploading avatars and promoting member/s of the group as co-admin or moderator/s among others. You should answer questions posted above, otherwise flying blind here.

KeymasterThere are lots of existing examples on the internet and in the codex on how to integrate BuddyPress into an existing theme. Start there, and come back with specific questions when you have them.

Participant@rickkumar You can run BuddyPress on single WP. Just contact webhost WP Engine about the Multisite issue.

ParticipantCouple more questions:
Is there somewhere a list of various profile fields that can be added?
Is there any plugin that can help add various profile fields?
Thank you.

ParticipantThank you @ubernaut
My WPEngine hosting (Professional Plan) came with Multisite enabled.
Is it possible for me to just have regular buddypress site and disable the Multisite?

Participant#1 there are a couple of options actually in your network admin network settings.
#2 you can also network activate the themes if choose.
#3 correct
#4 not necessarily if they understand css it should be fairly easy also depending on the built in them options they will not be able to “modify” the them files themselves
#5 buddypress certainly makes the whole site creation process more visible since a normal wordpress install doesn’t really do that at all (at least i don’t think it does).
#6 yes thats why they can’t do it only the network admin has the ability to add new theme/plugins.
#7 the only difference is the ability to admin their own sites but there are different settings to where they couldn’t even create them themselves (you’d have to activate any sub sites if you choose that option).

jeduhu
ParticipantBoris,
I have a few questions. I really like what you’re offering in Shabushabu and have questions about utility.
1. So this map can be added to each user profile to correlate to their location. Can you set it to private?
2. On your events plugin can you set the event geo tag to correlate with the profile. Meaning if you have a profile search event, to create begin and end point for instant navigation.
3. Is this offered to the US? I’m not sure what the prices are for us here.
Thanks,

KeymasterThese are all bbPress templating questions; you’re best to ask on the http://bbpress.org support forums, as that’s where the bbPress experts are.
December 5, 2012 at 5:57 am #146563In reply to: How to manage users & their extended profiles?
doncgarner
ParticipantHI, I am a recent transfer website owner from ning.com. I have a community there, and i’m moving this weekend to the WP platform. I have many questions, that I can’t really seem to find the specific answers to. The plug-in that this user spoke of (The features and more) can buddypress really manage a social community like the ning platform, and what about other features? Here’s what the user wrote:
@boonebgorges thanks for your response and plugin link, in terms of functionality it is almost exactly what I need, only:
– Need it to manage users instead of groups
– Need it to show their full profile fields (including xprofile)
– Need options to deactivate(very important) or delete users
– Need function to export list to excel sheetI need similar functions in a plug-in and need to know whats the BEST plugin or what combination of plug-ins will give me the features for a membership community that I want, members want, and that are essentially need to maintain a viable members community. Here is what I need as far as features and functionality:
-Secured membership registration and login seprate from WP admin. So members CAN’T access the backend of my admin panel.
-After they join they are sent to their members profile page to add a bio, photos, videos, music, etc..and everything post in their profile page, and in the community videos, photos, and music display like on a youtube page or gallery style. I also, need profiles that look more custom instead of simple layouts or designs. This is a BIG problem we had with our ning platform. Wish we could offer up to 6 or more profile page templates for members to choose from, complete with comments and a better layout for uploaded videos, photos, music (In a player on profile.)
-Members display in a four/five accross…four/five down style grid instead of up and down like a list.
-Search for members, based on attributes or career choice or find all member in a certain category.
-Want a upload feature on whatever page or place I designate for members to upload content like videos, music, photos.
-Add paywalls on whatever page I need to, for the purpose of selling premium content to members.
-Add featured profile/members and delete/block members at will.
-Don’t want to use multisite plug in if I don’t half to. Rater not use it.
Any help here, or a push in the right direction with plug-ins for buddypress please let me know. Thanks in advance good people. Blessings.

Participant@allenfuller – On http://dogsuniverse.dk/ we have 7 networks where the users profile is shared across all 7 networks but the user still have to login per network.

ParticipantWould there be a way to do the opposite? In other words, once someone has joined 1.domain.com, they are part of a shared user table and can then join 2.domain.com and all of their profile information copies over?

r-a-y
KeymasterHi Peter,
Commons In A Box is not a fork of BuddyPress. It utilizes BuddyPress as well as other vetted BuddyPress plugins together to form an easy package to work from. The rationale is you shouldn’t have to go and find which plugins work and don’t work. CBOX also packages a nice theme to work with that is easily customizable.
Check out the CBOX website for more info. Also feel free to register and ask questions over there.

r-a-y
KeymasterPlease try not to post the same thing across several threads. A good rule of thumb is to create a new topic for your questions and not bumping older topics that haven’t been responded to in awhile.
As for your questions:
* Geotagging for member profiles – several plugins exist. You might want to try Mapology. It’s a premium plugin, but it’s probably the most feature-rich.
* Auto-refresh activity page – there are a few plugins out there, but I haven’t really tested all of them. Try this one:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/rs-buddypress-activity-refresh/* Events – again, several plugins exist. Do a search on Google for “buddypress events” and you’ll find the top plugins.
You’ll probably want to test out a few of those plugins to see which ones will suit your needs.
Hope that helps.

ParticipantHi Kevin,
I wish I could recommend Salutation theme but alas I cannot.
I am very comfortable with WordPress and have been designing websites from purchased themes for several years now and this was my first venture into the world of forums.
The theme itself looks awesome – the main problem is the work I had to do to get the theme looking exactly like the demo – when first installed, Salutation does not communicate cleanly with WordPress so it comes out jumbled with static blocks all over the place. The work I had to put to figure out how to get it to look exactly like the demo alone was astronomical (and the demo was why I bought it).
The support available was very basic. I would ask a lot of questions and be given half an answer – frustrating and very time-consuming. I could not figure out how to work it out myself – a very unintuitive theme.
The videos are excellent and I did find some help there but here I sit… 50+ hours later with a beautiful website that does not work because I can’t get Buddypress to play nicely with Saluation… Hence, my request here for some professional assistance.
Hope this helps, Kevin!
🙂
