    @espellcaste, I had already read through that WP doc you referenced. That’s actually where I learned what lines of code to add to my wp-config.php file that I mentioned above.

    And yes, it is redirecting to the BP Registration page. That’s expected behavior since I have my BP settings that way. (I have some custom BP profile fields that I want users complete during registration.)

    I have posted my question here (as opposed to WP support) because it seems to me the issue may have something to do with how I have BP setup to interact with WP. And so I would think that someone else perhaps has encountered this same issue with BP and the Registration page.

    Anyone?

    Hey, @agundabbo, I’m new to BuddyPress but have been doing WordPress for a couple of years, and was happy to find two plugins that work with BuddyPress that have been stopping the fake registrations on my site. They are WangGuard and Pie Register. Good luck!

    I just installed WangGuard today on a new site I’m setting up that’s been getting slammed with several an hour, and it stopped the new faker registrations immediately. Also, I’ve been using Pie Register for a couple years on another site, and that alone has done a great job of keeping most spammer registrations out, so I put it on the new site, too. I didn’t have Akismet or anything on my other site, just Pie Registration and I was pasting a bunch of IP’s and certain words in the Settings > Discussion > Comment Blacklist, and no spam.

    Pie Register has the best Captcha I’ve seen in the plugins, but what I really like is you can program random questions that the user has to put the right answer in, and that’s fun. I choose stuff that is relevant to my sites, and amusing. I was really glad it works with BuddyPress!

    And I’m not affiliated with either of the above plugins, either, just another site owner who knows what it’s like trying to track down help.

    Thank you for your response @barney92

    Now I am finding that:

    * Sometimes the user is able to login using id/pw selected during account registration even if the activation message (after clicking the link in the email) is : Invalid Activation Key

    AND

    ** Other-times the message is still “Invalid Activation Key” and the user is NOT able to login using username/pw created during account registration.

    What a mess! It is now 2 weeks and can’t figure out what is going on.

    Really need some help here please.

    Can anyone recommend a good honey pot for BP registration? I keep seeing them for comments, not so much login.

    Here is now another phenomenon happening:

    1. New user clicks on the account activation email link
    2. The activation page displays error: “Invalid Activation Key”
    3. User can still login using the username and password selected during account registration

    Q: So what is going on here? Does it mean that the account activation email was never needed in the first place?
    Or
    Does it mean that somehow the account is activated even though the the page displays the error “Invalid Activation Key”?

    So how do I fix this issue? Is it possible to disable the activation email?
    Is it possible to chnage the “Invalid Activation Key” message to something like the following:
    —————————————————————————————-
    Now you can login using the username and password you selected during account creation.
    —————————————————————————————-

    Thank you!

    Hi @boonebgorges,

    Thanks for taking an interest. I went ahead and disabled all plugins and enabled Twenty Fourteen to test this out. My sites are hosted by WP Engine and they force some custom code via MU plugins (so, I couldn’t disable that). I also have some redirects set up to force registration on a custom form (via Gravity Forms). I would rather not change this in case I forget how it was set up.

    So, I wasn’t able to work out if new registrations were appearing. However I did test all of these:

      New Friendships (although an email was sent to the user whose friendship was requested)

      Blog Posts

      Blog Comments

      Replies to bbpress topics

      New bbpress topics

      New groups

    None of them showed up in the activity except the new group (which did). Which is weird.

    @mycal2

    It is an unfortunate situation.
    I have rest of the site setup but “Invalid Activation Key” has made me put everything on hold.

    It is now 2nd week that I am struggling with this issue with no end in site.
    What is more surprising is that this is an old known issue and there is no solution for it.

    I appreciate all the help from @henrywright so far.

    I am very desperate to find a solution to this so I can open the registration to the site.

    Btw, how do I access the key in the database (like your did ** DB Token = 42399c51355ac2303bfbfbd77e2b471f)?
    Can you plese give me some simple instructions?

    Thank you.

    I am having the same problem. I have created the buddypress pages but when I click on view page, whether logged in or not, I’m redirected to the homepage of my site, any assistance gratefully received.

    Also, I’m trying to design a registration page, i.e. for users to register, but can’t seem to do so. Any guidance on that as well??

    I can see them everywhere in the UI, but when I try to navigate to them, I get redirected to my homepage

    @el_wilson
    That is default behavior when you’re still logged in. Log out first if you want to see your Registration page.

    I changed the theme back to twenty twelve and registration still does not work.

    New users cannot register through buddy press signup page. I can setup a new user through the admin though and it sends notifications, activation emails etc just fine.

    When you enter your information to signup it refreshes back to the signup page.

    @aaronhester it would have been better to start your own topic instead of posting everywhere 🙂 Responded at https://buddypress.org/support/topic/impossible-to-registerbuddypress-registration-process-broken/

    @aaronhester What have you done so far to troubleshoot the issue?
    – Is WP default registration working if you deactivate BuddyPress?
    – What’s the bottleneck – you cannot send email notification, registrant does not receive activation email, etc.?
    – If you change theme to Twenty Twelve, for instance, does registration work?

    Updates:
    1. I just found out that even though clicking the registration email link displays the message “Invalid Activation Key”, I was able to reset the ‘new password’ to the ‘same original’ password using “forgot password” link and login using the new password.

    2. Then I created another test user and had exact same error message upon clicking the registration email link: Invalid Activation Key
    I ignored this “Invalid Activation Key” error message and this time I was able to login using username/password.

    It is very confusing and new users will just give up when they will get the error: Invalid Activation Key

    @djpaul

    Thanks for the response.

    I have tried everything I can think of, including testing with three different new accounts on different days.

    I keep getting the same error message: Invalid Activation Key

    Q: Can it be possible that BuddyPress (in our case) never stores the code in the database that it send in the registration email link? Perhaps that’s where the mis-match/invalid message is coming from?

    Try test the activation link immediatly, after your new registration test.

    I have narrowed down to the point that I can say editing following code breaks the registration.

    define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);

    Whether I change ‘true’, to ‘false’ or remove the code or comment out the code, registration system breaks.

    Any ideas on this?
    Thank you.

    I suggest having a look at s2member plugin. It allows for member registration and I believe have an option where you can restrict the content of certain pages to members.

    Okay, so yes the website is working however new registrations are not going through. When I click ‘Complete Sign Up’ the registration page refreshes and comes back blank just with the heading ‘Create an Account’ no registration form on the page.

    No activation email sent, tried all basic possibilities, deactivated all plugins, just buddypress is active. Cannot do any registrations.

    Please help

    Problem solved.

    Anleitung:

    Im Ordner /wp-content/plugins/ die Datei bp-custom.php anlegen.

    Die bp-custom.php Datei öffnen und folgendes einfügen:

    <?php
    /**
    * Disables BuddyPress' registration process and fallsback to WordPress' one.
    */
    function my_disable_bp_registration() {
    remove_action( 'bp_init', 'bp_core_wpsignup_redirect' );
    remove_action( 'bp_screens', 'bp_core_screen_signup' );
    }
    add_action( 'bp_loaded', 'my_disable_bp_registration' );

      add_filter( 'bp_get_signup_page', "firmasite_redirect_bp_signup_page");
        function firmasite_redirect_bp_signup_page($page ){
            return bp_get_root_domain() . '/wp-signup.php';
        }
    ?>

    Datei speichern. Fertig!

    @robg48 something else you could do is use a honeypot. An example is

    http://www.pixeljar.net/2012/09/19/eliminate-buddypress-spam-registrations/

    It works by adding a hidden field to your registration form. Users can’t see the field so will never complete it (it will always be blank). Spam bots, however, don’t view the page in the same way as users. They ‘see’ the page source so will always ‘see’ the hidden field and try to complete it.

    On registration form submission, if the hidden field is blank then we know it’s a genuine user trying to sign up. If the field is completed then we know it’s a spam bot and we can halt the registration. Hence, the name honeypot.

    @robg48 just a thought – try changing the name of your registration page. Spam bots automatically look for pages such as /register/ so maybe use /sign-me-up/

    Have you checked if registration works if BP is deactivated?

    Yes I have and mails still not coming through .

    @henrywright
    Hi Henry , I was in touch with them regarding the Mail Q or if there was a current issue with server – still awaiting a response…

    Thanks Guys
