KeymasterYou should not be using bp-sn-parent theme, it says it right there in the description. Use the bp-default.

InactiveWell if all you did was change a theme in the first place, try changing it back and see if that solves it. If it does, you’re a step closer to working out the solution. It might be something simple like a lack of support for it in the new theme. All you’d have to do would be to cut and paste the info from the old theme (which must be newer and did support it) into the new one (which is probably old and was designed before activity streams were invented). Let us know how this goes!

designodyssey
ParticipantThanks, that the first explanation of working with a WP theme framework that actually made sense to me (I think I’m slow). I’ll be trying with Hybrid when WPMU 2.9 arrives. Doing it this way, I should be able to get most things done with child’s style.css and functions.php
Feel free to show us an example.

designodyssey
ParticipantI’m essentially thinking of doing the same with Theme Hybrid. I’m guessing you move over the BP-specific templates to the Thesis theme directory and build the children off of the Thesis parent directory. Is this right?
Then you figure out how to make the css and functions work with this setup in your child. Interesting thing about Hybrid, most everything is done through style.css and functions and child themes have few, if any templates (as least with the two I’ve looked at).
Let us know when you have a working model we can view

Berkshireman
ParticipantThanks, Choufi. And there’s to need to apologize for your English! I’ll try it out.
I’ll point out one possibly related problem. The BP installation won’t take the default theme. The drop-down menu keeps reverting to the parent themes in P General Settings. If BP can’t find a usable theme, if can’t find the content.

Participant@alexduvot-
Okay, your current issue is not too clear anymore. Originally, you created this post because you could not get BP to activate. It appears that you have successfully activated BP but now have theme issues? Correct?
To resolve issues, you need to boil your install down to its lowest, common denominator. Assuming that you have successfully activate BP, then what you need to do is switch to the default BP theme then deactivate all plugins except BP.
Is BP working fine after doing that?
If so, then you either have an issue with a 3rd-party theme or one of your plugins.
Also, check your server’s error logs to see if there is any information. It can help point you in the proper direction

ParticipantWhether you are upgrading or installing BuddyPress for the first time, the instructions are clear on what to do with the theme files:
Upgrading: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/upgrading-from-10x/
Installing new: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/
Please, always read the instructions before upgrading an old or installing a new copy of BuddyPress. The readme.txt file that comes with BuddyPress is also clear on what to do with the theme files.
As it is quick, simple, and painless, I always manually upgrade or install new BP versions, instead you using automatic update. You have more control over the process.

Participantperhaps instead of giving everyone that big error, the message could be changed to tell them to place themes in the theme folder and to activate a buddypress theme.

ParticipantChouf1: I have wp_, bb_ and bp_ tables inside the same database.
DJ: Yes. I prefer the way BB handles forums to BP’s – plus it is easier to modify a BB theme to mesh with BP than it is to modify the groups and forums.
As to my original question, I moved my original BB forums to a defunct category, then re-created the themes from inside BP. I’m now able to post to those BB forums from within BP.

ParticipantHey there – I’m getting a similar, probably related issue.
I have followed the steps above regarding moving the folders etc.
However I am getting a ‘Broken Theme’ message: Stylesheet is missing & template is missing.
Also ‘BuddyPress Default Home Theme 1.0.2’ appears to be the only BP related theme available.
Thanks!

MemberDJPaul,
I disagree, I didnt expect to have to read upgrade documentation when doing a fresh 1.1 install. The red dialog box in the themes section conflicts what you are saying.

Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterIt worked for me – and I suspect plenty of others – so there’s probably a bug lurking somewhere.
So just to check – delete /wp-content/bp-themes/. Put the new two theme directories into /wp-content/themes/. At this point, going to the BuddyPress admin backend (in /wp-admin/) will get you a red warning box.
Then go to http://example.com/wp-admin/wpmu-themes.php, activate ‘BuddyPress Default’ (not ‘BuddyPress Social Network Parent Theme’). Then you should be able to activate the ‘BuddyPress Default 1.1’ theme on http://example.com/wp-admin/themes.php.

KeymasterIf /wp-content/bpthemes/ exist, BP will try to use pre-version 1.1 themes.
If that folder doesn’t exist, it will load from /wp-content/themes/ as like normal WordPress. This is explained perfectly well in the upgrade documentation and throughout this forum.
October 2, 2009 at 10:55 am #53562In reply to: Need for Buddypress API
Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterOf course there’s a BuddyPress “API”. How do you think we write plugins and themes that rely on BuddyPress? If you are specifically talking about stuff like how WordPress can use XML-RPC for remote blog posts, then, no, there’s nothing like that at the moment. You could use the AJAX functions for quite a lot of stuff, however.
I would imagine this is a very low priority feature suggestion and such a thing would more likely be driven by someone writing some kind of external app.
October 2, 2009 at 10:23 am #53556Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterYou are not following the upgrade instructions properly. There’s a document linked on the news post on the front of this site to an in-depth article, but:
1) Deactivate all of your plugins, but not BuddyPress (yet).
2) Remove any plugins out of your mu-plugins folder.
3) Change your theme back to the standard WordPress theme.
4) (Now) deactivate the BuddyPress plugin.
5) Delete BuddyPress off your server and the /wp-content/bp-themes/ directory.
6) Upload 1.1 and move the new themes into /wp-content/themes/.
7) Reactivate the BuddyPress plugin. Reactivate the BuddyPress theme.
Reactivate any other plugins you took out in step 1.

Simon Wheatley
ParticipantDoh! Good point. I did say untested.

You could try adding the line to your functions.php in the theme?
October 2, 2009 at 10:05 am #53553Simon Wheatley
ParticipantIf the front end is blank white but the admin section is visible, it might be because the theme directory has been moved from where WP is expecting to see it… try going to the appearance section and resetting the theme.
October 2, 2009 at 8:23 am #53539Reiner
ParticipantAndy, thank you. but
still not working. everything deactivated but the grey bpress admin bar is still showing.
When I delete the buddypress directory from the server I get a blank page as starting page. Also white: after deleting bp-themes and bpress. Also white, when I delete bp-themes without deleting buddypress…
When I upload the new version, still white… I somehow cant get bp1.03 out of the dna of my system…argh….
thanks.

MemberI agree with your post, copying the themes to where you suggest has resolved the issue for me. The instructions in 1.1 are wrong, or at least, they were for me.
