    Several of initial questions:

    1. Have you tried switching back to the standard BuddyPress home theme? If not, do so and see if the problem still exists.

    2. Have you tried deactivating all 3rd-party plugins to see what happens? If the problem goes away, you should then reactivate the 3rd-party plugins one at a time, testing after each reactivation to see if the problem has returned.

    2. Are there any errors in your log files? If so, what are they?

    Are you still having issues? A week ago you posted this:

    I tried using the default themes and the same problem persists. I could really use a pointer on where to even begin looking for a fix for this

    But you failed to tell us which version of BuddyPress you are running. Two weeks prior, you stated that:

    I downgraded to RC1. I am going to wait for 1.0 and then try again.

    Does your problem exist when using the public release version 1.0?

    If you’re still having this issue, you need to remove as many variables as possible. Since you are using a custom theme and a number of 3rd-party plugins, this is where you should focus your efforts.

    Before starting this process, make a backup of your MySQL DB just in case. Also, it is advisable that you back up all your custom themes and 3rd-party plugin files just in case you make some major mistake.

    Now, switch to the standard themes that come with BuddyPress. Try creating a group again. If the problem appears to be resolved, switch back to your custom themes and try creating a group again. If the problem returns, contact the theme designer.

    Next, assuming the problem still exists with the standard BuddyPress themes, you should deactivate your 3rd-party plugins one at a time. Deactivate just one, try creating a group again. If the problem still exists, then deactivate another 3rd-party plugin. Keep doing this until either the problem goes away, or all 3rd-party plugins are deactivated. You can also go about this the other way: deactivate all plugins except BP and then reactivate one at a time, checking to see if the issue occurs again with each new reactivation.

    If you find that the problem goes away after a particular 3rd-party plugin is deactivated, then you may have found the culprit. Contact the developer of that plugin and ask for advice.

    Please report the results back in this thread.

    Without knowing the details, it would be nice if you could somehow ‘pull’ the post form into a custom home theme in BP. This way users could seamlessly cross-post to Twitter from the home page using one form. I’m using P2 theme as my home theme so the need is obvious, but perhaps this could be possible somehow.

    Regardless, very happy to hear this is coming soon.

    Here are a few thoughts:

    1. Do a test with your users by switching to the standard BuddyPress themes. If the problem goes away, then it’s most likely a theme issue.
    2. Make sure that your users are uploading avatar files with sufficient dimensions. At a minimum, each dimension needs to be at least 150 pixels.
    3. Upgrade your version of GD. It is a little outdated. There may have been some browser-related bug fixes since your version (note: I’m just suggesting that possibility; I have not verified this though). The current, stable version is 2.0.35
    4. Finally, contact Sgrunt, the desinger of Facebuddy, and ask for his advice. He may be aware of an issue with IE 6 & 7. If he is not aware of your partciluar issue, he most likley will appreciate you keeping him in the loop–wether or not this particular issue has anything to do with his custom theme. Share with him the results of the above steps.

    RC means release candidates and it’s a programming term for referring to specific pre-release versions of software. Buddypress has had 2 so far – RC1 and RC2.

    On a similar vein, most programmers use something known as a revision control repository throughout development, primarily for easy access to previous versions (“commits” in this context) of software. One of the advantages of this is that it saves duplicating a folder on your computer each time you make progress. Each commit will have a version or release number. Imagine having 1303 folders on your hard drive with only slight differences between them.

    As far as we are concerned here, RC1, RC2 and rXXXX (where X are numbers) refer to a particular snapshot or version. Now Buddypress has had it’s version 1.0 release, every live website ought to be running version 1.0.

    Rules of thumb: any BP-specific plugins ought to run on v1.0. Any theme that says RC1, though, probably WON’T run on v1.0. There is probably a lot of tutorials etc that refer to a specific release number (like r1303 in your example). That’s just the nature of ongoing development – documentation is prone to getting out of date easily.

    If you’re trying to follow some specific instructions and get stuck, just post here and we’ll help.

    Jeff:

    1. I’m using Facebuddy theme, but it is only CSS changes, so I don’t believe it could possibly cause the problem.

    2. Running PHP5

    3. My GD version is 2.0.28.

    I’ve had a few users install Firefox and they were then able to properly upload and crop their avatars. The strange thing is that it looks like it is working, but once the final crop is done it goes black.

    You an do this but then you get the word “pages” stuck in your Menu. With the pages dropping dow to the right hand side.

    I’ve tried that other code but don’t understand what it means, do you mean add that as a php file to the theme and then make a referenc eto it in header.php?

    Delete wire post where? I tested that too. We’ve got:

    1) Profile wire on the member profile home page

    2) Profile wire in Me > Wire

    3) Group wire on the group home page

    4) Group wire in Group > Wire

    They are all working for me with:

    bp 1.0 trunk (1.0 should be fine too)

    default bp member theme

    BP_GROUPS_SLUG, BP_MEMBERS_SLUG, BP_WIRE_SLUG changed

    wire_patch_three.patch

    Where isn’t it working?

    If you are writing your own functions, you need to make sure and declare:

    global $bp;

    at the very top of the function. Otherwise the function doesn’t know where $bp is getting set and treats all variables as blank.

    up, up… :)

    Any helping hints, please?

    I have a feeling I’ve just done something wrong and that’s why i’m having these error messages…

    But i’m a little bit confused because forums and groups worked fine for a while and then they don’t. I didn’t change the code expect my own theme’s css. I changed default theme back, but still not working.. :( And own theme worked fine before too.

    I got someone to look at the code and the error messages and he said something like there’s no error in the database, but I get the SQL error because the site is trying to make database query with a broken code.

    now it was:

    ´SELECT count(id) FROM WHERE item_id = 1´

    and he said it should be:

    ´SELECT count(id) FROM <TABLE_NAME> WHERE item_id = 1´

    He also said that some variable that has that table’s name is missing… Or something like that.

    I’m not very familiar with SQL so… and know only php basics…

    I am still having this issue. I’m running BP 1.0 and own theme but changed the default 1.0 member theme back… and still not working. I also have other problems (https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2633).

    Kit-

    I’m sorry you’re having troubles with your theme folders. To be clear, I want to make sure that you realize that you were not, as you state:

    advised to change my “bphome” name to preserve it in case of future BP upgrades.

    I assume you’re talking about the discussion we had in this thread you asked:

    I assume renaming the theme is simply changing the name of its folder?

    I responded:

    That is correct. Make a copy of the bpmember theme, rename your copy, make whatever changes you want to it, and you have–in effect–a custom theme! Just make sure you keep your new theme in the /wp-content/bp-themes/ directory.

    Also, in this thread where I advised you to:

    Follow the same procedure as before. Make a backup of the standard bphome theme, rename it to something new…

    This means, rename your backup to something new, not change the name of the original theme folder.

    Furthermore, as per a private conversation you initiated with me on May 6 via the members messaging system, I state that:

    Make sure that you make a copy of both bphome theme and bpmember theme. Your customizations should be done in copies, not the original. That way, if you have issues with your custom themes (and we all do when working on customization), you can switch back to the standard BP themes to see how things should work.

    And, as we were talking about CSS issues in that private message and you stated that you had WordPress theming experience, I assumed you knew that the primary style file in BuddyPress, style.css, would need to reflect your new theme’s name.

    If you were confused by my advice, I do apologize. But, if you had done what I advised, you would have made a copy of the original theme and altered the copy. As I stated in my private message response to you, do not alter the original theme files.

    And if you use the same logo, you should change the same file in the bphome theme as well ;-)

    I solved by myself: I had to change also the file base.css in the bpmember theme.

    I have the same problem as Bento, and I guess this has something to do with localization, considering everything works when I set language back to English in WPMU General Preferences.

    So please, could someone look into this and suggest what to do, ’cause I really have no clue.

    More info on the erratic behavior (again, if WPMU language is English everything works fine):

    WPMU 2.7.1 – Buddypress 1.0 – default bphome & bpmember themes – WP_Lang it_IT

    – Dates generally won’t be saved into the DB

    – Some random dates, however, are saved, but off by 1 day (as per original message by Bento)

    – Manually editing the DB shows the date in the Public Profile page

    – When editing the profile after a manual DB edit, a month won’t be selected in the datebox (while day and year are)

    – Months names (F) are translated in the datebox, still in English in the Profile Page

    – Doesn’t matter what date format you set in WPMU preferences (be it F or m for the month)

    (Edit: typos)

    Okay, so here’s what I’ve done:

    1. Added this code to the beginning of the bb-config.php file (I have WPMU installed at the root):

    require_once( $_SERVER[‘DOCUMENT_ROOT’] . ‘/wp-blog-header.php’ );

    2. Added this code to the bbPress footer (before the closing /html tag):

    <?php wp_footer() ?>

    3. Added this code to the bbPress header (before the /head tag):

    <?php wp_head() ?>

    4. Added this code to my bbPress header theme:

    <div id=”search-login-bar”>

    <?php bp_search_form() ?>

    <?php bp_login_bar() ?>

    <div class=”clear”></div>

    </div>

    The result: I am getting a white space above the bbPress header where the bar should be and the login bar is showing up in that space. But there is no CSS flowing (I changed the buddybar color) and I don’t see any of the buddybar menu items.

    Hope this helps those who are newly joining the conversation.

    Any further help would be appreciated. :)

    open up style.css, you need to modify the header (i.e. this section)

    /*
    Theme Name: BuddyPress Default Home Theme
    Theme URI: http://buddypress.com/
    Description: A widget framework theme for the home of a BuddyPress enabled installation. This theme is not required to use BuddyPress.
    Version: 1.0

    Oh. Yep, I see it. Hang on a sec..

    Well, no I don’t see it. If I have an existing group and all my friends are already members or I don’t have any friends then I get a message like that.

    I just created a new group and bp displayed all my friends and allowed me to select those I wanted to invite. I invited some and all is fine.

    I’m using bp 1.0 and the default home/member themes. Works for me.
