@nathanwoulfe Sanity Check. When you say child theme, do you mean child theme of the bp-default theme? If not, if you have a child theme of a regular WP theme, have you installed the BP Template Pack plugin and have gone through Appearance > BP Compatibility process?
WP/BP versions?== a h3 tag
[?php _e( ‘Site Activity’, ‘buddypress’ ); ?]
that isn’t rendering either… ==
– I’ll assume that you used brackets instead of the “ symbols so that they show up in forum post. Know that you don’t have to use brackets, just surround your code with backticks, symbol you see between parentheses `( ` )`

@mercime
Participant@jende The avatars in the sidebar widgets are constrained down to 40px x 40px via stylesheet. The actual avatar size is 50px x 50px. You could change the avatar size via your bp-default child theme’s style.css file like so:
`#footer-widget-area div.item-avatar img, /* remove this line if you only want to change size in right sidebar */
div#sidebar div.item-avatar img {
height: 50px;
margin: 1px;
width: 50px;
}`April 10, 2012 at 12:49 am #132747In reply to: [Resolved] BuddyPress strategy for a newbie…
@mercime
Participant@dave953 I suggest that you set up a separate WP/BP test site using different DB on the same server where your current WP is installed. That way, you can test BP, different BP plugins and/or themes first before installing or introducing it to your users in your main site.

@mercime
Participant@coxis123 It’s the other way around. You need to make your Thesis theme compatible with BuddyPress. We use the BP Template Pack plugin to make WP themes compatible with BP.
Overview to the compatibility process and the list of WP themes at the bottom of the same page that we’ve made BP-compatible at https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/wordpress-to-buddypress-theme/

@ChrisClayton
Participant@coxis123 Their site states “The Thesis Theme framework is a premium template system for WordPress that is designed to serve as the rock-solid foundation beneath any kind of website.”
With “any” emphasized… So, you can assume so.

But, it’s up to the theme developer to make their themes compatible, so you should ask them.

The version of WordPress is 3.3.1 and Buddypress is 1.5.5. I installed wordpress manually via FTP. I have only 1 plugin installed and I deactivated and still the same issue. I installed Buddypress both through FTP and WordPress online. The issue is still there, and can’t figure out why none of files are seen except blog.April 9, 2012 at 6:04 pm #132731In reply to: WordPress theme with buddypress
@mercime
ParticipantWP/BP versions? Did you install WordPress manually or via webhost script like fantastico or simplescripts etc? Have you tried re-uploading BuddyPress again manually via FTP to plugins folder. Basic troubleshooting includes deactivating all plugins except BuddyPress and change to bp-default theme.

@mercime
ParticipantSo what you want to add another widget area after the login form in your sidebar. You would have to register a new widget area in your child theme’s new functions.php file, then add a new get_sidebar call under the code of the login form in your sidebar.php. See how: http://justintadlock.com/archives/2010/11/08/sidebars-in-wordpress

@mercime
Participant1) BuddyPress requires “pretty permalinks” so go to Settings > Permalinks and set to something other than default and Save.
2) If you do not see any “Repair” link after that announcement, go to BuddyPress > Pages and create or associate the pages https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-buddypress-components/#bp-pages

ParticipantI used to work with the Atahualpa theme. I have been unable to use it with BuddyPress then moved to a home made child theme of the bd-default. I’d be glad to see there is a way to do this as Atahualpa is definitly a very achieved tool for wp users.

MemberJust double checked – index.php is in the same folder location in my child theme. Dumped the cache, no change. I’ve just added arbitary text inside both the content and padder divs, to check if the changes were rendering, which they are not.
That said, there’s a h3 tag
[?php _e( ‘Site Activity’, ‘buddypress’ ); ?]
that isn’t rendering either…
Strange thing is I’ve been able to edit /activity/entry.php with no problems.

ParticipantI installed BuddyPress and changed the theme to the bp-default. How do I know if everything is working? I get the toolbar up top, but the links go to 404 Not Found. Except for Groups – that goes to a page with Group Directory and link to Create a Group that works. If I go to Profile>>Public it brings up my page indieconnect.com/publicity.
When I click on Forums I get multiple errors.[Errors acknowledged and deleted – too long in our forum page]
So is this working for something that has not gone through the BP Compatibility stuff?

MemberAre you using the original buddypress theme, or a child theme?
April 8, 2012 at 10:55 pm #132695@mercime
Participant– Install BuddyPress and test it in your server using the bp-default theme.
– If everything’s working well, change to the Atahualpa theme or another WP theme,
– Install and activate the BP Template Pack plugin then go through the Appearance > BP Compatibility process to transfer the BP template folders to Atahualpa theme folder in server.
– Upload the header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php file to your theme folderJust a thought, you didn’t delete your theme’s header.php right? You shouldn’t
April 8, 2012 at 7:32 pm #132690IndieConnect
ParticipantSad, sad, sad. I can’t get to see anything anymore. All I get is the toolbar with the links up top, but they do not work. I do not seem to get the 500 Internal Server Error anymore, but I get the 404 Not Found.
I have repeatedly cleaned everything up and out (through the installer and looking at the directories) and tried again. I fear I have ruts now in my plugin installer.
So if I start from the beginning, I’m gonna install BuddyPress and the BP Template Pack and activate them. Does it matter what order I activate them? Also, even though I have cleaned stuff up, when I install anew, I see remnants of previous work – the Pages are already listed in the BuddyPress Pages tab.
I am gonna clean it all up again and wait nicely for your direction.

ParticipantIt should. Are you sure you uploaded the revised index.php file into same directory structure as in themes/yourWPBPtheme/activity/index.php in your server? Cleared cache? What changes did you make?

How did you change it? And where did you make the changes, in your child theme?April 8, 2012 at 4:59 am #132654@mercime
Participant== I get a 500 Internal Server Error or 404 Not Found when trying to get Buddy Press pages. ==
When did this happen? After you uploaded header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php ? Or after activating a new plugin?
Have tried running Settings > Permalinks again to other than default, and click Save?

Participant1. /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/
You shouldn’t need to touch those files, instead create a child theme: https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
