Memberah i see its starting to make more sense now
i am in the process of converting a large php social site into wordpress and just came across buddypress and it looks like the answer to my problems. So when a user signs up to my site in wordpress are they signing up through wordpress and then buddypress takes this information and allows more social things to be done with it?
I have to pick a new theme for the site so i guess it wil make sense to pick a wordpress/buddypress theme to make sure i get the most out of it all.

ModeratorCan you provide a link please to see as this probably is because of your theme and can’t really judge until see what you mean by don’t ‘look like a regular page’?

ModeratorIt opens up social networking and other things besides yes. Where the menu item is though is down to the theme and also up to you if you edit files.
You do not have to change the look of your blog you’d use the template pack to allow your theme to work for BuddyPress. There are some files you’d need in your theme but the template pack solves that.

MemberSomehow I think both themes are active – is this possible?
In the article:
https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Under “let’s start building”.. it says “Check your site home page. You’ll notice that there is no design at all. It’s just text on a white page….”Well when I got to that step that was not the case the bp-default styles were there. I just checked again. My new child-theme IS activated. The BP default.css is being enqueued as well.
So why are files from two different themes conflicting? IE ajax.php.
I have gone into the bp-default theme and deleted the content of ajax.php which gets rid of the fatal error but still leaves me with none of the ajax on my site is working. I’m pulling my hair out!September 27, 2011 at 5:11 am #121216JohnP
ParticipantSorry, the previous comment is incorrect – if I upload the /settings directory to the ACTIVE theme it works fine.
September 27, 2011 at 5:00 am #121215JohnP
ParticipantSame problem here – /settings, /settings/general and /settings/notifications all show a blank page after upgrading to 1.5
I’ve manually placed the /settings directory from bp-default into my theme/members/single/ as suggested, but with no result.
Further suggestions would be appreciated.

MemberThat’s a good question… lol
Originally I installed BP 1.2 and used the template pack to get my WP theme working. I customized the html in the files within the theme/sirup/groups folder.
Then I upgraded to 1.5 and stuff broke. I have moved over all (i think) of the folders/files where I didn’t make changes to the theme root from the bp-default as per: https://codex.buddypress.org/releases/1-5-developer-and-designer-information/#theme
So I figured I had better make a real child theme which really just entailed adding the definition in the style.css.
I am worried I am making my problems more complex though…

@mercime
Participant@abutterworth Please clarify – are you using
a) child theme of bp-default (your custom child theme or from WP repo or other third party child theme) or
b) child theme of sirup theme you posted above (that’s why you activated BP Template Pack?)September 27, 2011 at 2:53 am #121207In reply to: BP template pack not working

MemberHi, I have the same issue. I have done all the steps leading up to this point except the second part of these instructions..
“2. Alternatively, you may find it easier to make copies of your theme’s header.php, sidebar.php and footer.php and rename them to header-buddypress.php, sidebar-buddypress.php, and footer-buddypress.php.
Then you can alter the structure of these new template files (header-buddypress.php, sidebar-buddypress.php, and footer-buddypress.php) to resemble your theme’s page.php (or index.php).”
I tried to follow the instructions listed above but these instructions appear to be slightly different from what’s in my .php files. Please help. I don’t know what it means to “alter the structure of these new template files ( ) to resemble your theme’s page .php.” or how to do it.
The site is http://mybridalstuff.com, Please please help.

Thx

@mercime
ParticipantIf you’re using the bp-default theme or better yet, a child theme of bp-default theme, you do not need to install/activate the BP template pack.
September 26, 2011 at 11:14 pm #121190@mercime
ParticipantYou could add the following to your theme’s sidebar.php after the login
</form>:<a href="http://uffc-campaigncentral.net/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword">Lost your password?</a>September 26, 2011 at 11:07 pm #121189In reply to: BP template pack not working

Participant@modemlooper do you know what template files I can mix to get the buddypress pages working on twentyeleven, basically it’s the same thing template pack does, but having buddypress template pages for buddypress content only?
@r-a-y can you help with that?
September 26, 2011 at 9:37 pm #121179@mercime
ParticipantChange to bp-default theme. Looks like your current theme needs to be updated.

Member@frenx4u Do I just copy the /bp-default/groups/ folder to the corresponding folder in my Custom Community Pro theme? A little worried about messing up the work sorting out the profile which sits in the same Root directory!
Will check back here later or tomorrow.
Cheers
