stevieg – It’s probably because the following theme hooks are missing in Template Pack:
    https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.2.8/bp-themes/bp-default/functions.php#L339

stwc – If you’ve customized your BP theme files to oblivion in your WP theme, then don’t upgrade / reset the template files!

Well If the suffision theme offers the horizontal list, than copy the CSS from the theme using firebug, and you should be able to copy it into your current theme.

It’s probably a one rule statement of css your missing.

I do not know if fishhook theme is a child theme or not, but try looking in

    wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/members

This is where buddypress default theme should be located relative to your wordpress installation if you are using wordpress 3.X (maybe 2.9) or greater.

OK – I have had a good search and I simple cannot locate this file in the Fishbook theme. Maybe my lack of knowledge with the BP file structure, but I have genuinely met a dead end.

Here is a recap of some posts I posted at http://buddydev.com recently:

I use Bp-Cosmic-Pro Theme built of of bp-mag and have about one spam registration per couple of weeks (and it’s usually a real person that registers and gets through)… They are caught within minutes of posting something ridiculous and marked as spammers by the admins.

There are a number of reasons for that:

    1. It’s a closed/ register only site (but free to all), (note: I do not require e-mail validation either)
    2. I use BuddyPress Humanity Anti-Spam Plugin
    3. I use Si-Captcha Anti-Spam
    3. Multiple Profile fields are required to be filled-in at registration as an ANTI-SPAM measure – in part.
    4. I have a TERMS and use that Requires THE CHECKING of a box to register.
    5. I use the bad behavior plugin to keep out the crazies and use the Blocking-list feature of it.

Occasionally, I get the I can’t register e-mail, but it is rare and there is a note for people to contact me if they can’t register properly… I have 1700 active (non-spam users) on my site and virtually no SPAM.

I believe one of the keys to success here is that it is a “private site” and as such it’s not indexed (I realize this could be a problem for many sites, but not my niche site). So, sites don’t scrape it as a potential source to attack.

I would also recommend the ANIMAL BuddyPress Captcha plugin.

    *****************************

I usually think about SPAM protection in the form of a Castle for open community WordPress Sites:
    1. The Moat: Programs like Bad-Behavior and plugins that stop bots/scrapers before they get “through” to the site.
    2. The Gate/Drawbridge: Programs like Captchas, Math Challenges, Reverse fields that SHOULDN’T be filled in to “trap” bots from auto-filling.
    3. The Keep: Programs like Akismet.
    4. The Guards: Moderators with the ability to knock out spam when they see it.

The biggest issue with BuddyPress is that THERE IS NO KEEP (no. 3 above) for the Activity Streams…
As far as I know, there are not programs like Akismet or any of the “KARMA” / Comment anti-spam plugins that work for the BuddyPress group/activity/forum streams… DJ-PAUL has talked about making Akismet work on BuddyPress Streams at the BuddyPress.org site, but there is nothing yet that I know of yet –

If anyone does know of something that will “auto-moderate” the BuddPress Stream updates/comments, please let me know… ;)

    Regards.

== however on the sub-domains it does not show up in the navigation menu or in the back-end. ==

That is default behavior, so you haven’t done anything wrong. What exactly do you want? To add a navigation menu of the main site to all subsites? Then you either have to add the source code of the main site’s navigation to your member theme/s or use switch_to_blog function which could be intensive if you have dozens of main navigation links, etc.

== Is it even possible to have one buddypress installation that shows up on all the sub-domains being created with Multi site ==

BP by default is activated in one site of one multisite installation and it aggregates information from main site and subsites (in your case in subdomains) to record the activities of members in said installation.

Now if you want to have multiple BP installs in one WPMS install, check this out – http://wpmututorials.com/news/new-features/multiple-buddypress-social-networks/

== My blog’s sidebar displays at he bottom, but there’s nothing on the side for buddy press. ==

@lizdavalos it very well might that you haven’t made the necessary HTML revamping of the BP template files moved over to the folder of your active WP theme. i.e. you need to impose the HTML structure of your WP theme onto said BP template files – those wil get_header at top and get_footer at bottom.

It tells you right there where to look for the file? It’s either there or you have a copy of it in your child theme.

    Tell us what folder though!

if you are refering to a child theme folder then it’s possible it doesn’t WP uses a template hierarchy system this means that it looks for files first in the theme folder then if the theme says it’s a child theme WP looks to the parent theme for the file so a child theme may not have copied over that file and is using the parent copy in which case copy over the whole file to the child theme and edit it from the copy which WP now uses instead of the parent copy

I did try the BP default theme and that seems to have taken care of the errors and even some other glitches I had. I do have a question on the BP default theme..
All my pages seems to show on the tabs on the top of the main page. Is there a way I can get them not to show? In other themes I was able to select them not to show but I do not see how I can do that with the BP default theme?

Thank you for any additional help.

@4ella no DO use a child theme, if all you want to do is some basic CSS styling ten you only nee to create the most basic child theme with a style.css file in it.

Follow this guide it’s very straightforward:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/

If you now activate your theme in the dashboard it will inherit/ import the main BP styles as well as all the other important BP stuff, you can now add your own styles to your stylesheet below the @ import calls to override any BP styles.

Sometimes, themes seem to be missing a few essential style elements for Buddypress, but you can fix that. Open your Fishbook theme’s style.css file and scroll to line 966 where you’ll see the style rules for `ul.activity-list li`
Add the following to make sure everything in each activity item sits snugly inside the container:
    `display:inline-block;`

The styling for images added to the activity stream by BP-Album plugin also needs a slight adjustment for your theme. You can add a bit of extra space beneath activity item images so they don’t crowd the divider line. Open bp-alnum/includes/css/general and scroll to line 197. Add the following to `.picture-activity-thumb img`:
    `margin-bottom:10px;`

+1 for the hook manager idea for a theme option. It would make adding custom features a lot simpler for many.

No, it’s not a simple edit on any specific page because those are links you’ve added to a WP Custom Menu. As they are stored in the database and called via the wp_nav_menu function, they won’t be visible in any file.

But it looks like it can be done with jquery. 🙂 Assuming you want to continue using WP Custom Menus for those links in your navigation (rather than hard-coding them into your header.php file), you’d need to target only those links contained within the specific <li> item in the menu. (According to Firebug, that would be .sf-menu li#menu-item-174 li a. Note that if you modify the custom menu after applying any rules to that specific li#, you may need to adjust the the following code ‘cuz the li# may change.)

    jQuery(document).ready(function($) {
    $(".sf-menu li#menu-item-174 li a[href^='http://']").attr("target","_blank");
    });

To see how it’s done, see the 2nd example snippet on this page: http://css-tricks.com/snippets/jquery/open-external-links-in-new-window/
    …as well as wp_enqueue_script: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script

Another way would be to use register_nav_menu to create an additional Theme Location under WP Custom Menus where you can assign a special menu coded to open all links in new windows. See the WP codex here for that: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/register_nav_menu

    Hope this helps 🙂
    …and have fun!
