    Okay, I’ll try to be clearer…

    I’m using a theme I converted to be compatible with BuddyPress. I know it is now compatible because when I first installed BuddyPress it worked perfectly. All the BuddyPress menus appeared at the top and I tested every page. I’m using WP eMember membership plugin and it worked perfectly with BuddyPress. When logged in as either an Admin or regular user I could see the top BuddyPress menu and everything worked perfectly.

    Then I activated WP multiuser mode…

    After activating WP multiuser mode, I can only see the BuddyPress menu on the front end by using my Admin account. If I try creating any new accounts through either WP or eMember, they are unable to view the BuddyPress menu. Originally, I thought these new members were unable to view any BuddyPress pages, but now it appears that if I manually try to access different pages, the new members ARE able to see BuddyPress pages. So IT IS ONLY THE BUDDYPRESS MENU THAT DOESN’T WORK FOR NEW USERS. However, the BuddyPress menu DOES work for my Admin account.

    Obviously something happened when I activated multiuser mode and I have no idea what it could be. If anyone wants to register for a free account to check it out feel free: http://magneticquest.com/registration/

    All I need to do now is figure out how to get the BuddyPress menu to appear for new users.

    It’s a pretty good idea to deactivate the BP theme before deactivating BP, though strictly speaking it should not be necessary. Having a BP theme active while deactivating BP will mean that visitors to your site will see a white screen. However, the Dashboard of your site should still be available. You should *not* be seeing 500 errors when you attempt to visit http://example.com/wp-admin.

    I’m not sure what cloudflare is – I looked at their site and I don’t get it. Is it a caching plugin of some sort? It’s possible that a caching plugin might cause this sort of problem. Generally, what other plugins are you running?

    I still am not clear on what’s happening. Presumably, you are using a BP-compatible theme, such as BuddyPress Default. Users should then be able to access BP content by clicking on links like Members, Groups, etc. What do users see when they view your site? Do they see the theme that you have installed? Or a blank page? What happens when one of these new users attempts to view a page like http://example.com/members? I think that we need a clearer sense of what’s going on before we can suggest a solution.

    Do you have any plugins installed that restrict member access to certain parts of the site? For instance, are you using some method of keeping non-members from accessing pages like example.com/members?

    Do I need to switch off the buddypress theme before deactivating buddypress?

    == when I make a text widget of any type they only seem to show on the main page. ==

    That is strange, I see no evidence of a text widget in the home page nor in the inside pages, did you already delete the text widget?

    Troubleshooting –
    1. Deactivate ALL plugins except BuddyPress. Now add text widget – not Adsense, just a regular one – and I believe the regular text widgets will show up in all pages. It might just be that your Adsense plugin is not working as expected or has got a conflict with other plugins installed in your site.
    2. Deactivate ALL plugins except the Google Adsense plugin and change theme to default twentyten theme. Add the adsense widget. If the Ads don’t show up, then you have to resolve this issue at the WordPress.org forums https://wordpress.org/support/forum/plugins-and-hacks and reference whichever Google Adsense plugin you are using

    Added a version which is stable and all errors sorted out. Only thing left to do; is work on the styling of the main nav bar as anything other that of ‘home’ selected doesn’t reflect the selected colour..

    The guy reviewing my theme has pointed out that there should be a option to disable/enable the admin bar. Iv’e documented this in the readme.txt so Im not going to bother with it and he also pointed out that having a crap load of menus will kinda break the theme – if you want to use that many menus, good luck! link to the menu

    I specifically included the custom menu/drop down menus as to reduce ‘cluttered menus’.

    I just checked fishbook, a child theme of bp-default theme with one sidebar. There should be no deterrents to getting your widgets to show up in sidebar. What if you add a “Members” widget or a regular text widget e.g. About, me? These should show up in sidebar of whole site.

    I’ll clarify when I say “upgrade BuddyPress”, I mean update the files and reactivate the plugin, then visit the plugins page in wp-admin. Then before the next step, deactivate BuddyPress. You won’t need to toggle between the BP Default theme during this.

    Backup everything — entire web root folders and the SQL database. Check the backups work. It never hurts to keep a backup of the backup somewhere, perhaps on another computer. The idea being is that if you have to delete everything and start out from scratch, you know you’ll be able to get back to where you are now.

    You will have to re-build your theme, as the BuddyPress theme structure changed since the version you are using. You’ll probably be able to keep your WordPress theme, but you’ll essentially have to build a new BuddyPress theme, or be happy with using the (new) default BuddyPress theme. You can check out the default theme on http://testbp.org/.
    I would suggest you get your theme sorted out before you upgrade.

    It’d be massively easier starting from scratch with a new BuddyPress installation, but I’m assuming you can’t do that. The upgrade process from this old versions will be complex. Definitely do it in steps, don’t jump to the latest version.

    0) Disable BuddyPress and all other plugins. Revert to standard WP theme. Get WPMU upgraded to 2.9.2.
    1) Get BuddyPress updated to 1.1.3.
    2) Get new theme ready (or use BP-Default) and then upgrade to BuddyPress 1.2.4
    3) Upgrade WPMU to WP 3.1.1 (latest version)
    4) Upgrade BP to 1.2.8 (latest version)

    You’ll need to test this upgrade process / order of events before you have a go on your live site. Set up a local test site, or on a test server, and try this there. I haven’t done any upgrades like this (keeping the data from an old version), but good luck

    === Finally activated it and the default theme came up. ===

    By default theme, you mean twentyten default theme. You need to go to Appearance > Themes and activate bp-default theme. Better yet, create a child theme of bp-default and activate that.

    === I’m getting no links to my already made pages and i’m not sure why at all. ===

    Make sure that mod_rewrite is enabled in your server as “pretty permalinks” are required for BP components to work in your install. If you’re using bp-default or the child theme of bp-default the Pages you created should be rendered in header area after the BP component links.

    Thanks a lot Mercime :) Have it all figured out, made myself .htaccess and I’m good to go. Now to my next problem which im sure is easy to fix! Finally activated it and the default theme came up, only thing is I’m getting no links to my already made pages and i’m not sure why at all.

    Yes but it will be a little trickier than that as you’ll need to look at the various files that make up a page and what parts you want to allow to show and what new bits you want to write so you’ll likely need an else: in there somewhere to allow the normal page elements to display if this group is not ‘support’. Just a matter of playing around a little, and of course work in a child theme copy of the files.

    The new BuddyBuilder v1.2 now includes over 160 customization options! (Geez… will it never end? Nope.)

    Especially fun in this update is the Header Image Rotator: you can display up to 8 images in random or ordered rotation in your header, complete with animated descriptions. You have full control over image display time; fade-in/out speed; description size, location, animation speed… and much more.

    See details here: http://buddylite.com/2011/notices/new-in-buddybuilder-v1-2/

    Questions? Don’t be shy… ask here or in the BuddyBuilder forum at: http://buddylite.com/groups/premium-support/forum/

    == thumbnails of next and previous images ==

    @famous next and previous thumbnail images are shown by template tags –
    and

    One quick solution for an image.php file:
    – copy bp-default theme’s index.php and save to your child theme folder
    – open up index.php and replace the following lines:

    Replace

    <div class="entry">

    </div>

    With

    <div class="entry">
    ID, 'large' ); ?>

    </div>

    Replace

    <div class="navigation">
    <div class="alignleft"></div>
    <div class="alignright"></div>
    </div>

    With

    <div class="navigation">
    <div class="alignleft"></div>
    <div class="alignright"></div>
    </div>

    Replace
    <h2 class="posttitle"><a href=&quot;" rel="bookmark" title=" "></a></h2>
    With
    <h2 class="posttitle"><a href=&quot;post_parent); ?>" rel="attachment">post_parent); ?> </a></h2>

    You can also check out twentyten’s loop-attachment.php to see how image attachments are rendered along with other forms of attachment https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/3.1.1/wp-content/themes/twentyten/loop-attachment.php

    You could always edit the template files for /members/single/ (in a child theme) and wrap default actions in something like :

    `if( ‘1’ == bp_displayed_user_id() )`

    As a check for the displayed user being ‘1’ or primary network super_admin then you’ll do stuff based on that such as unique markup for that user alone or use in a ‘if not’ manner to hide certain profile display elements.

    That’s a basic approach you could extend that to be more flexible by checking a users role bp_displayed_user() checked against WP roles and capabilities for that user.

    This is exactly what I want to try and do. Mingle I think has outlived it’s purpose at http://ecigusers.com and I’m trying to migrate to buddypress but I have around 29 users and a steadily growing forum built in using mingle forum, Both Mingle and Buddypress can be activated at the same time I have found but the menu system thats semi-transparent on the header is a knighmare to navigate. If I re-activate buddypress could someone take a quick look at the site and make suggestions as to what I can do.

    If you want your members to create groups at will, then you could place it in member header area.

    This is how to do it If you had created a child theme of bp-default theme and you want to place the create group button where it can be seen right away, you could copy this file https://trac.buddypress.org/browser/tags/1.2.8/bp-themes/bp-default/members/single/member-header.php from the bp-default theme into your child theme’s folder following the directory structure
    i.e. wp-content/themes/yourchildtheme/members/single/member-header.php . Then you can insert the code as one of item buttons; and you should check if the Groups component was activated in your install first by adding conditional: if ( bp_is_active( ‘groups’ ) )

    This topic is pretty rude. Of course people have gotten BuddyPress to run “ok.” You’ve made a couple of posts on this site since joining, and they both seem to be about your dissatisfaction with the default theme. As @hnla says, most sites will want to customise the theme. The BP-Default theme lets you create child themes of it, so you can very easily and quickly put your customisations in place whilst maintaining functionality.

    The third-party market for themes (free or premium) is limited, but that’s mainly because BuddyPress is a pretty new project as far as software goes. One of my favourite theme providers for BuddyPress at the moment is StudioPress; they sell a plugin called GenesisConnect which adds BuddyPress compatibility to a lot of Genesis themes — http://www.studiopress.com/plugins/genesis-connect

    I’m closing this thread as it’s not very constructive; if you are really asking “where can I find BuddyPress themes”, search the forums or post a new thread asking constructively, and I’m sure people like @pcwriter will come along and share what they’ve found. If you’d like information about Pligg, I’d try their website or forums. When asking on a BuddyPress forum about Pligg, you’re only ever going to get any meaningful feedback from people who have recently used both BuddyPress and Pligg, and I’m willing to bet that’s a pretty small cross-section of users on this site.

    I thought “theme” was the synonim for “topic” or “main post”. OK, nevermind.
    How to forbid deleting and editing topics on a forum for everybody except BP-superadministrators?

    BP is not really an out of the box solution to create a successful community in functionality and look you have to put some work in, there are some grat examples of what can be done but they have had time spent on them and require a certain amount of skills with PHP and frontend coding CSS ? HTML.

    Not sure what you really mean by a consistent website? bp-default isn’t a bad theme at all for an ‘out of the box’ better than most I’ve experienced but even with that theme you are meant to take it and make it your own.

    What are these ‘Sample sites’ you refer to?
