I had the same problem, this is the final code that solved it for me.

    WP 3.0.4
    BP 1.2.7
    Suffusion theme

    `$aspect_ratio = (int) constant( ‘BP_AVATAR_FULL_WIDTH’ ) / (int) constant( ‘BP_AVATAR_FULL_HEIGHT’ ); ?> <script src="/wp-includes/js/jcrop/jquery.Jcrop.js”>) )
    $aspect_ratio = (int) constant( ‘BP_AVATAR_FULL_WIDTH’ ) / (int) constant( ‘BP_AVATAR_FULL_HEIGHT’ ); `

    aljuk, thanks for the reply.

    1. I think the BP Profile Privacy plugin is just what I need.

    2. I’m not sure about the BuddyPress Private Community plugin. I think I’ll have to install it and play with it and see if it’s helpful for me..

    3. When you say “All of that should, and does, happen as a matter of course”, *Name* is a core field but doesn’t break a user’s name down into first name, middle initial and last name. So in order for me to have that level of granularity for the user name, I’ll have to add a “First Name” field, a “Middle Initial” field and a “Last Name” field. So I end up asking the user to fill in their name information twice and the value the user enters into the “Name” might not match the combined values of the “First Name” field, “Middle Initial” field and “Last Name” fields. I’d much rather have the user enter values in those fields then concatenate those entries to fill the “Name” field.

    4. So is there a way I can manage group members profile management separately from visitor management? If I set up the BP profile fields with the level of granularity I need for our members, that would be way too much information to ask a visitor to enter just to be able to register to leave comments.

    5. Sounds to me like until I can heap enough abuse on the folks over at Artisteer, I’ll have to retweak theme files every time I make a change to the theme with Artisteer. Your suggestion of constructing a child theme sounds like it would work but I’d have to have my “real” theme become a child theme to the BuddyPress default theme and that seems to me to be the exact opposite of how things ought to work. It would be really nice if there was some way to install the BuddyPress default theme as a limited child theme to my Artisteer theme without overriding my Artisteer theme formatting. That does bring up a question though… is there any way I can create page templates for profile management that use the BuddyPress default theme yet have the rest of the site maintain use of the Artisteer theme? Another option might be putting up profile management on a separate domain and synchronizing the database from there to the main site’s database. However, this sounds like a level of development that’s probably above my skill level (I’m not a PHP programmer but am at least a fair HTML guy).

Again, thanks much for your help.

    — Due to the privacy issues, and to be a member on my site, you need to pay a fee, —

99.9% of those who help out in this forum are volunteers. You cannot expect volunteers who are trying to help you to pay a membership fee to troubleshoot your custom theme which is already going beyond getting BuddyPress working in your site.

    — is it absolutely necessary to be on the front end? —

It would make it much easier and faster to identify the problem.

It’s less work for developing the default theme to call one file activity-loop.php from different pages. You can create your own activity loops and call them where ever you want. Maybe you only want to show activity updates that have comments. Create your own loop to just show that.

You don’t need the BP template pack plugin when using Citizen Kane theme. Just deactivate it and delete.

I’m all for better notifications; it’s something I’m keen to look at either in core, or in a separate theme, in due course.

Would either of those methods result in faster loading times? Or both probably equal? To me, something like this should obviously be built and only exist if a theme includes it, not something built directly into Buddypress and requiring a hack (or whatever you would consider that) just to not have it.

I also think it would be great to have a tutorial/codex on how to Buddypress’ify a theme or inividual pages without having to use the template pack. Being able to build pages from scratch would be a giant step forward for Buddypress I would think. There is just so much going on behind the programming scene it is spilling over into the front end scene.

I’ve tried to follow this a bit https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/ to produce something like I described in my previous post, but I don’t see the connection between bp_has_activities() and the “accepted arguments.”

    bp_has_activities(friends)

…seemed like the only logical way it could work, but no luck. And like I already mentioned, all the files for each activity page are all slurred together and editing them individually, is that even possible? I can’t even find the file for the @mentions page.

@modemlooper I’m not sure how you took what I said that way, I am suggesting for more options and forcing less built in stuff that not everybody wants, but still can be created, like the navigation bar.

I don’t see why any one would not enjoy a notification page, but that is something you could simply not link to if you don’t want it and wouldn’t require any special programming knowledge.

If more people than me have been suggesting a more Facebook like flow, I would guess it is because both do the same thing, but Facebook isn’t as confusing, Buddypress is too anal about things trying to divide everything up and categorize too much. Does anybody really need 5 tabs under the activity tab?

Hi thanks. I discovered that themes with the Nav bar along the top with the link to groups gets you to the Create Group site. However, there is still no link to create groups in the Bar along the very top of the page which has all the links and access to your Dashboard etc. You can check http://ordinaryjoe.ca/endthemadness/

Also when using the BP Compatibility Plugin on a standard wordpress site, it says you have to change the html structure of some template files such as blogs/index.php and groups/index.php etc. It is supposed to have this structure..
By default BuddyPress templates use this HTML structure:

    [HEADER]

    [PAGE CONTENT]

    [FOOTER]

If BuddyPress pages are not aligned correctly then you will need to modify some of the templates to match your theme’s HTML structure. The best way to do this is to FTP to your theme’s files at:

    /home/ordinar5/public_html/endthemadness/wp-content/themes/citizen-kane/

Can you advise on how to do this?

    Thanks,
    Don

    1. If you don’t want the nav bar, you can suppress it with the following line in your wp-config.php file:
    `define( ‘BP_DISABLE_ADMIN_BAR’, true );`
or you can manually unhook it with the following lines in your theme’s functions.php:
    `remove_action( ‘wp_footer’, ‘bp_core_admin_bar’, 8 );
    remove_action( ‘admin_footer’, ‘bp_core_admin_bar’ );`
    No need to hack anything.

    2. A vanilla installation of BP, using the default theme, loads one stylesheet: style.css. That stylesheet includes two others: _inc/css/default.css and _inc/css/adminbar.css. There is also a stylesheet for the Dashboard view. If you are using the template pack and are finding too many stylesheets, it’s possible that your WP theme is to blame. In this respect, BP is being fairly austere in the number of CSS files it’s loading. If you want to override things, there’s no reason to “hack” – just put your own overriding styles after the import commands in style.css.

    3. This is a great idea, I think. Perhaps you could file a formal enhancement request at trac.buddypress.org (same username/pw as this site)

    4. The way that the default theme handles profile, activity, friends etc separately, provides a large amount of straightforward customization in child themes. If bp-default had them consolidated, child theme authors would have to rebuild the pages to make them separate. We are erring on the side of enhanceability. You are welcome to build a child theme that incorporates these parts of the profile into a single page – I bet a fair number of people would be interested in such a thing.

Hey @boonebgorges. Yes, it’s my custom theme, the default is not affected.

I am a noob on code, so will u help me fix this?

I can paste files of whatever you need

Off the top of my head, it could be that the theme author did not include the proper WP hooks in that particular template (wp_head) so that the stylesheet isn’t loading correctly. Or maybe something in the crop javascript is keeping styles on the rest of the page from being activated. It’s hard to tell without actually seeing the site. Have you tested to see whether the problem persists when using the BuddyPress Default theme?

    #104504

    Using custom theme.

The theme author has one of those forums where it’s nearly impossible to get support. :(

It could be that the Buddymatic theme you have in your install has not been updated to current BP 1.2.7 version.

Yes I have everything enabled. Unfortunately, I just installed a new theme to try it (Buddymatic) and when I activated it I got the following error.
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare bp_dtheme_ajax_addremove_friend() (previously declared in /home/ordinar5/public_html/coupons/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/ajax.php:334) in /home/ordinar5/public_html/coupons/wp-content/themes/buddymatic/_inc/ajax.php on line 63

Can you tell me what happened and how I might fix this?

like @mercime said “Deactivate BP Template Pack if you’re going to use a BuddyPress-compatible theme already.”

Looks like he’s using the Custom Community BP Theme by @svenl77 per problem in “/home1/laozenco/public_html/wp-content/themes/custom-community/_inc/ajax.php “

Edit- didn’t type fast enough. But if you’re using Custom Community theme, you don’t need to install BP template pack. Use BP Template Pack only when you choose a WP Theme. Deactivate BP Template Pack if you’re going to use a BuddyPress-compatible theme already.

Hi Modem.. sorry about posting the same topic twice. I am new to this and didn’t know the proper process. My apologies.

Yes, I am using the template pack. I used Bluehost to install BP and it came with the template pack.

=== The IMages just don’t even load on the crop page, which is not really a huge problem, but it is sort of ugly and out of place. ===

@Bigjimmysisco I understand that your avatars uploads are working. Good for you because most of the problems I saw in these forums were the avatar uploads and not that of header or background image upload/rendering.

Since it’s the loading of the background image and a header image that is failing for you, we have to troubleshoot what’s causing the block to a very basic function.. So are you using the bp-default theme or child theme of the bp-default theme OR a custom theme? If it’s the first two, then reupload manually (via FTP/cPanel) buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default theme to your server. If it’s a custom theme, contact theme author of theme glitches for BP 1.2.7/WP 3.0.4.

Another aspect to consider is that default maximum file size uploads are 2MB or less. Check image file size. Check also image file types allowed – jpg, gif, png.

Does this occur on the default theme? After you’ve disabled all plugins? Or have you customised your activity loop in some way? (looks like the activity stream item permalink/single page template)
