I am trying to create two navigation bars, simply because the main BP nav bar takes up too much space when there are a number of WordPress pages. I want to be able to add various WP pages, and sub-pages, and there isn’t the space at the moment.
I am currently using the BP Columns 1.2 Theme, just because it has 2 sidebars, which I also need. Ideally, the Theme would show the second (WP) nav bar below the header, but I am open to suggestions.
Can anyone point me in the right direction – I can’t see anyway in the standard Buddypress to do this. I wondered about setting up a separate Page Template for Buddypress or WordPress pages, and only showing Buddypress on the BP pages, but it doesn’t feel like it’s the correct way to do it.
Pointers, anyone?
Paul: Could you tell me which wordpress is better for buddypress? I’ve been using buddypress+WPMU almost 5 months and buddypress+WPSU about 1 month, but I couldnt make decision which one is better for buddypress..
thank you for your great work! I have installed the theme locally . i get this error message when trying to view live:
Fatal error: Class ‘BB_Query’ not found in /opt/lampp/htdocs/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums.php on line 318
also the css seems to be all messed up with most of the screen white.
thanks

Hey sorry I missed the follow up to this. In a word, I ended up hacking the progpress plugin for WP (http://jasonpenney.net/wordpress-plugins/progpress/). I added a filter for the buddypress xtended profile that I named Goals and it showed up like a champ on the profile pages.
I then made some edits to my theme, which is more of a hack, but now progress meters show up anywhere the member loop is used, and next to the user avatar in the profile page. That said, I wanted to take it one step further and improve the ui (you basically have to load in an html comment that the plugin filters for with a regular expression). I don’t know how to do that in buddy press, but if anyone knows how to modify the UI for the extended profile such that I could take a few different form elements and concatenate them on the WAY to the db, I’d finish off my little hacking and send it back to the plugin developer to see if he liked my extensions.
Hello,
CaPa is simple and efficient compared to the (too) big Role scopper.
I can’t use it with wordpress 3.0 rc2 + buddypress…
Blank screen when activate.
Debug log show 2 problems… by removing the concerned sections, CaPa can be activated… but Buddypress not working properly…

Is there a way to resolve this problem ?
Thanks
I’m getting errors that I’ve never had with wordpress-mu before when trying to upload group avatars and add topics to the forum pages.
For avatars I get this when I try to upload group avatar image:
Upload Failed! Error was: The uploaded file could not be moved to the upload folder.
Uploading avatars for the profile pages, however, works fine.
For forum topics, I also get an error telling me it cannot post the message, but yet it DOES post the message (much to the frustration of my members right now).

Help with this would really be appreciated!
I modified the “Manual Approve” plugin by Matt Kern to work with BuddyPress (don’t think he published it to the WordPress repository). I think that may be your answer to approving manually. Just put it in mu-plugins.

Is there any critical risk or problem if bp-core-avatars.php from BP 1.2.3 is used in 1.2.4.1 ?
It appears that user uploaded photos (as avatars via BP) showed up globally without any problem in wp mu posts and comments but in 1.2.4.1 this does not happen in wp mu posts – we discussed this here:
http://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/how-to-show-avatars-uploaded-via-buddypress-in-wordpress-mu/
This problem solves itself if the old bp-core-avatars.php from BP 1.2.3 is used in 1.2.4.1. The old file is slightly smaller in size so I am not sure if there can be any other unseen problem if the new, slightly larger (and thus containing addtional or modified codes perhaps) file is not used.
Thanks for any help.
It looks like the dev probably wrote it on Windows and it used upper case but when it went into the wordpress repo, it went in as all lower case. You have to change the case of the folders to BP-Group-Control for it to work. I didn’t want to just change the file in case there were other dependencies.
Retested and retested. With 1.2.3 things okay … with 1.2.4.1 user uploaded photos show in bp activity streams etc BUT NOT wordpress mu posts eg. comment posts
Hmmm … I have other buddypress and wordpress mu plug ins, not much but few.
When I downgrade to Version 1.2.3 of buddypress things work okay.
But using the 1.2.4.1 version causes problem. Did they introduce some bug somewhere ? ( Maddening for me!)
Have you got a working site with BOTH buddypress 1.2.4.1 and WordPress -mu-2.9.2 ? Any web link please ?
I’m running BP 1.2.4.1 and it’s working for me.
Buddypress is activated sitewide. User uploaded photos show up across all activity streams. Except in wordpress mu blog posts and comments. Not sure whether this is a problem with the latest Buddypress.
Are you using the latest buddypress ?
If you activated BuddyPress sitewide, this should work across all sites.
A child theme is basically a stylesheet with a tag telling WordPress to use another theme as its foundation.
Then you can inherit all the templates that foundation theme uses and you can also override these templates in your own child theme.
Please read the article I linked to and start reading from the “Let’s start building” section.
If you have any questions about it, please list them.
@nuprn1 – Ahh okay, I thought Nick was talking about this:
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2009/04/23/comment-reply-via-email-open-to-all/
The “Post via Email” option you mentioned isn’t available in WPMU, which is what I have on my testbox.
Am wondering if this option is available in WP 3.0 in network mode?
An interesting plugin idea indeed! The only thing I’m worried about is the email address that users will be sending to. It could get potentially hammered! I know this will definitely not work well on shared hosts.
Hello, I have a question which I have been unable to find any support for thus far.
I am using wordpress as a CMS for all registered users. I want them to be able to perform all user-related tasks from within the backend of wordpress, this includes buddypress participation.
I am most concerned with the activity page. I don’t necessarily need groups or forums. I just want logged in users to be able to view, favorite, and post activity threads. Of course, activity filters, profile page, friends page, settings page, etc, would also need to be migrated to display in the backend.
I am relatively familiar with PHP, and CSS, and I already know how to create plugin files that display menu entries on the left side of wordpress. I just need a buddypress wiz now.
I’m aware that this could be a tall order, and there might not be a quick explanation, but does anyone have any ideas, or have you heard of anyone else trying this?
Thanks for any help!
Joe

I just want that users who have uploaded a cropped photo or avatar via buddypress should be able to show the same in all posts and comments across blog posts in wordpress mu. Those who have no such upload or are non-registered commentators should have gravatars. I wish this was an easy option automatically available.
If there is any plugin that lets wordpress mu users to upload cropped avatar to show in buddypress too, that will also do. At present the two plugins wpmuavatars and add-local-avatar are broken, the later one gives complete error with latest versions of buddypress and wordpress mu.
Any solution to the
tag not taken by firefox in latest plugin modificaiton with WordPress 2.9.2 and Buddypress 1.2.3?
I don’t imagine it would be related to the WordPress version… but you never know. One thing I find confusing is the instruction to replace the “activitycomments” folder in the default theme. BuddyPress 1.2.4.1 does not have such a folder in it’s default theme.
Hey guys,
I’m new to BuddyPress so I just want to ask a few questions. Is it possible to turn off certain features of BuddyPress? If so how would one go about doing it? Secondly, do most plugins that work with normal WordPress work with BuddyPress?
Thanks guys
Yui
That’s only on WordPress.com and only for blog comments. It’s proprietary code unless Automattic decide to release it to wordpress.org. And then someone would need to adapt it for BP as well.
