    @r-a-y
I couldn’t make it to the chat today, but I just read through the thread. What I couldn’t find was the reasons for using pages instead of post_types. Were those listed off on the audio portion or something?

I’ve spent the last month digging really deep into post_types, and while I don’t have a strong background in bp structure, post_types seems like the perfect fit for bp. Would you kindly give us some of the pro’s/con’s of pages vs types and why the decision was made? Maybe it would help many of us to understand the bp structure and direction in the future a little better.

Use paginate_links() https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/paginate_links. It’s not very easy to use (IMHO) but it’s better than doing it from scratch.

    Hi,
I added buddypress to my blog and I have 50,000 plus members and I just discovered that Buddypress cannot handle usernames that have a space in them properly. You can’t click on the person’s name and the @ username thing doesn’t work.

I have seen posts that indicate that WPMU and I guess buddypress are not designed to handle usernames with spaces or capital letters.

My question is… is there a command I can run in mysql to change everyone’s username to their nicename? (I think that’s what it’s called)

    Thanks!

No luck. Here it is right now:

    Options +FollowSymLinks

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /wordpress/
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /wordpress/index.php [L]

You’ll have to wait for Google to check your site again.

You can expedite this process by signing up for Google’s Webmaster Tools and requesting your site to be delisted.

Also make sure your WP site is blocked from search engines:

    BuddyPress is overkill.

You want to use a front-end posting plugin. There are a bunch of them out there.

    Here’s one thread:

Hmm, needs to be some sort of way for front end users to harness the power of content types. Like that pages will be components. It’s merging into WP better.

    Hey there.

I was just wondering how you guys backup your databases? I’ve seen a wordpress plugin called WP-DB-Backup. Do any of you use it and recommend it? The target audience of my site have sensitive information and I want to make sure I don’t lose any of it.

    Thanks,

Such a discussion was briefly brought up by @sbrajesh today on the dev chat.

BP components will be full-on pages in BP 1.3.
However, there are currently no plans to implement custom post types for BP components.

    Hi,
I am trying to make a fully private buddypress installation.

I use the plugin registered-users-only-2 to password protect the site, but this only blocks 99% of it. One issue I am running into is the RSS feeds are still public, especially the site wide activity RSS.

There is a wordpress plugin called disable RSS, but this does not disable the buddypress specific RSS feeds.

Is there a way to delete/block/disable all the RSS feeds? I would like to avoid blocking via .htacess at all costs.

    I have wp 2.9.2 and bp 1.2.3

I have just installed WordPress 2.9.2 and BP 1.2.3. I am running the site on IIS 5.1 with ISAPI_Rewrite v 3.

    My url looks like this:

    http://localhost/wordpress

My permalink structure looks like this:

    /%category%/%postname%/

My httpd.conf file (required for the lite version of ISAPI_Rewrite 3) looks like this:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /wordpress/
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /wordpress/index.php [L]

The home page and default about page display correctly, but when attempting to go to: http://localhost/wordpress/activity/ or any other BP url for that matter I get the friendly Page Not Found message. At least it is not the ugly 404 one. I have searched and racked my brain to no end. Does anyone have an idea of what I need to change? Thanks in advance.

Certain users are unable to access the blog and New Post dropdown under My Blogs. The site has only one blog available – the main site. Everybody is made a contributor by default. The drop-down works for me, but a user says,

“Nothing comes down under “my blogs,” and under “my account” if I roll down to “blogs” in the drop down, I get no options.”

    The site is http://www.selfpublishingreview.com

Hi everyone. We just launched a site called FarmvilleFunClub.com. It’s a place where people can talk about farmville and share tips and tricks on getting the most out of the farm.

The site is running Buddypress on WordPress 2.9.1 with the Avenue-k9 theme.

To celebrate our launch, we are running a sweepstakes to win a free Apple iPad. It’s open to anyone just for joining and confirming your membership.

Hi, I am new for buddypress.

Yesterday, I installed Unplugged Child Theme from WordPress control panel and followed the instructions.

However, right now, as you can see from the blog:http://merrionitdesign.com/wordpress/

I cannnot find out the place where I can post new articles!

One more thing!! I lost the orginal wordpress control panel where I can manage the settings, plugins… Right now, when I am login from http://www.merrionitdesign.com/wordpress/wp-login.php, I only can see the top nevigation bar without wordpress control panel’s side bar. Does that mean I need to login FTP to modify the code?

Can you help me? Either direct me on how to go back to the orignal wordpress without buddypress, or how to get my easy-to-go wordpress side bar back

    Thanks.

I did all the required to get this plugins to work but I got this error everytime I’m trying to activate the plugins:
502 – Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server.

    Wordpress : 2.9.2
    Buddypress : 1.2.3 fresh install
    Server : Microsoft IIS 7
    Host : webhost4life
    Site location : root

The error displayed in my site both at front and back. My site went back to normal after I remove the plugins via FTP.
Can anyone tell me how I could get this great plugins to work?

    • 1. Which version of WP/MU are you running?
    •
I’m not sure about the WP part because simple script installs everything at once, but it was a fresh install.
They also offer WP 2.9.2, so I believe that’s what it would be if they installed wordpress first.
    •
    2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install?
It was installed directly to the domain with a /city after it.
It is not my primary account, but it lists as just the domain name. so in my case it is not 12gates.citywidesites.com, but 12gates.net .It is an add-on domain
    •
    4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version?
    • NO
    •
    5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting.

I installed WP under a different subdirectory to test it when the Buddy press did not work, and it worked fine.
    •
    6. Which version of BP are you running?
    1.2.3
    •
    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version?
    NO
    •
    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?
    NO
    •
    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?
    Standard
    •
    10. Have you modified the core files in any way?
    NO
    •
    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php?
    NO
    •
    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in?
    NOT running bbpress
    •
    13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files.
    14. Which company provides your hosting?
Hostmonster is the host and simplescripts is the installation software

Okay — so I know this might sound crazy, but I just set up an awesome dev enviro using *both* git and svn. Here’s why:

I’ve always hated using externals in svn, and if you want to track *both* your WordPress install *and* BuddyPress, that’s one really annoying way to do it (which has always been troublesome to me).

So, I first set up the latest tag of WordPress (2.9.2), and just got that running fine and dandy. Then I went to the folder I’m developing in and did a local “git init” repo, *just* for WordPress.

Then I setup all the cruft I want to ignore via .gitignore. This is a crucial part. Make sure to add “.svn/” as a line in the .gitignore file. This will set you up to pull BuddyPress bleeding edge trunk in.

Then it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 pulling in BuddyPress into the right directory. (From the plugins folder: “svn co http://svn.buddypress.org/trunk/ buddypress/”) This might seem ridiculous, but for a person like me who needs compartmentalization and organization on projects, this was a no-brainer. Now I’m managing both repos separately, but they’re layered right on top of each other, fully integrated.

(Now I’m just waiting for WP/BP to actually make the switch to git, and then the world will really revolve in unison.)

    Hi all !

Just playing with nightly build wp 3.0 and buddypress 1.2.3.
As BP can be installed on a standalone WP or WP multi-sites, i though i could install BP on one of my WP site letting other sites working as standalone sites.
    Apparently this is not possible.
    Did i missed a specfic setting ?
Any idea if future release will allow this ?

I’ve read over a couple renaming topics but none seem to really explain how to do it fully. I’d like to change “Groups” to “Communities” throughout my buddypress install. I’ve made edits in the header.php which allows me to change Groups to Communities in most places. But, I can’t easily make that change in the admin bar or a couple other places where “Groups” still appears. Is there a file where “Group” is defined for naming throughout the entire site? I tried using this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-rename-components/stats/ but it doesn’t seem to work with later versions of buddypress. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance…

    ps. I’m garbage at PHP

Thanks for that explanation re: localhost.

But my main issue (and looking at the earlier posts in this thread over the last few weeks, it is a problem experienced by several other posters) is the same sort of problem on my remote site, http://waterwaywatch.org . I can get as far as Member and Group pages but if I try to click on a member to display their profile, the site re-directs to About.

I’ve been struggling with this for some time (see earlier post in this and other threads). In an attempt to isolate the problem I have reverted to a standard bp 123 theme- including choosing a non-default permalink – but the problem persists and it is a real show stopper as I can’t launch the site as is.

    Thanks for your response,

    Regards

    Will
