ParticipantI guess I should have worded the above different. I also found the plugin you speak of, however–I guess what I was wondering is, will buddypress eventually incorporate their own plugin. The reason I state that is because, it seems logical to email all users in case there is a problem with logins or if someone hacked the system. BuddyPress seems like it should be the responsible party to potential problems. Not muWordpress or wordpress. And being that it is a social network website owners must keep the attention of users by sending information out occassionally. Just a thought…

ParticipantFor web apps there is no need for multiple versions for different devices such as iPhone/Android/WebOS, that’s the main benefit of doing a web app over a native one.
Love the screen shots so far, looking great! Did you see the WP-Touch plugin for wordpress, might be some useful stuff you could use there.

ParticipantYou could use https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/front-end-editor/ for inline editing. Haven’t tried it myself, but it looks pretty good.

ParticipantTry re-logging with your FTP, not sure what FTP program you use, but mine (FileZilla) sometimes shows old files that I already removed with wordpress. Also check the chmod, not really sure if it can block you from removing files, but just to be sure, change it to 777.

ParticipantCan you explain a bit more on the process of making a child theme? I too would love to have the member blogs have an integrated look and feel into the default buddypress theme – NOT the ugly WordPressMU blue theme :p.
Thanks

ParticipantAndy,
What type of plugins/multiple db’s/caching do you have enable to handle all the users of this site?
Of course WordPress.com which runs MU has scaled quite well, but I know they do some special things on the backend to make that happen.
WordPress (which is what I’ve done up until now) scales VERY well. I’m amazed at how much traffic I can handle on WordPress for $6 a month.

ParticipantThere are more free buddypress themes at http://freebpthemes.com.
The list at https://buddypress.org/extend/themes/ should have more on it in the next couple weeks. Once updated that list will include https://wordpress.org/extend/themes/tags/buddypress.

ParticipantHello all, before I get started I have spent a good deal of the day searching the forums and trying bits and pieces but I figured I would create a new thread in hopes to salvage whats left of my unproductive day.
Now the good stuff, I am using a Theme based on Woothemes Fresh News, worked perfectly, so I decide to add buddypress 1.1.3 to the mix and wanted to use my current theme over the BP theme. I saw Andy’s post that all you have to do is copy over the files from bp-sn-parent to my current theme and it would work, so I did that and it works… somewhat
I have uploaded the following directories and files to my current active theme from the bp-sn-parent folder:
_inc
activity
blogs
directories
friends
groups
messages
profile
registration
status
wire
links.php
optionbar.php
plugin-template.php
searchform.php
userbar.php
attachment.php
Then I opened style.css from the bp-sn-parent and copied and pasted the contents into my current style.css.
/* Font styles */
@import url( _inc/css/fonts/12px.css );
/* Layout styles for home page, internal pages and blog/directory pages */
@import url( _inc/css/layout/home-page/3c-right.css );
@import url( _inc/css/layout/internal-pages/3c-left.css );
@import url( _inc/css/layout/blog-dir-pages/2c-right.css );
/* Admin bar styles */
@import url( _inc/css/adminbar.css );
/* Default example styles — these should be your own styles in a child theme */
@import url( _inc/css/screen.css );
/// THE ISSUES
The homepage has the admin bar up top just without any styling (i.e drop down colors, admin bar background) but its there. When I go to a member profile page the admin bar is running down the side not up top where it belongs and the rest of the page has no styling attached. So what am I missing here? None of the styling is attached to my custom theme. I typed all this because im sure other people have this problem maybe this thread can help them.
Thank you all

KeymasterWordPress scales just fine. Is it perfectly and sveltely built for all applications? No.
http://ma.tt/2006/03/wordpress-and-lyceum/ is a good read about this from a few years back.

BuddyPress doesn’t really suffer any of these as advantages or disadvantages, since it currently sits on top of an MU installation; it just kinda “is.”

KeymasterFYI, here’s the demo of BP on standard WP:
Plugin isn’t released yet AFAIK.
At least this allows standard WP folks to test out BP before the merge, I can see this greatly helping development timelines for those looking at standard WP for social networking.
For updates, follow the developer’s Twitter account:

ParticipantHowever, any geek is quick to point out that “WordPress doesn’t scale”. I’ve always wondered if that was just an urban myth. There must be some truth to it?
John James Jacoby
KeymasterI suspect it was just a matter of finding the WPMU functions that don’t exist within WP, recreating them in a plugin and using existing WP functions in their place. This isn’t surprising considering that the platforms share about 99% of the same code, but with the code merge around the corner this plugin is a little bit late to the game for most folks.
A for effort though.

ParticipantOnly extra that buddypress needs now is an easier wordpress intergration, bbPress already has all the core functions of a good forum software, if you need more, write a plugin.
I’d rather not have bbPress get bloated like one of the other huge forum softwares out there.

KeymasterYeap! This installation is probably the best example of a site with thousands of active users. You can even see how it works in a sisterly fashion at http;//profiles.wordpress.org. Same user tables but different site/blog so to speak.

in group forum Installing BuddyPress416member
ParticipantI was looking at the About section of this site but didn’t really get the answer that I need. If someone could enlighten me pleas if BuddyPress can be a standalone software or does it need to be migrated with WordPress/MU/BBPress?
I’m looking at building a community site where each user can have their own blogs and showcase their stuffs (videos / music)?
Thanks in advance

KeymasterBlog support is just disabled, since there is no support in regular WP.
December 7, 2009 at 12:23 pm #58159In reply to: How to disable Gravatar completely?
Marcus (aka @msykes)
ParticipantYou shouldn’t have to edit the core files at all. I had to whip up something similar today for a client which you may find helpful.
What it does is replace the email that is used to access the gravatar with a different one. I recommend you replace the default email template with your domain, so, the gravatar will remain persistant if it’s an identicon or wavatar:
class DisableUserGravatar {
var $email_template = "member.%USER%@yourwebsite.com";
function DisableUserGravatar(){
add_filter('get_avatar', array(&$this, 'wp_avatar'), 1, 5);
add_filter( 'bp_core_fetch_avatar', array(&$this, 'bp_avatar'), 1, 3);
}
function wp_avatar( $content, $id_or_email){
if( preg_match( "/gravatar.com/", $content ) ){
if ( is_numeric($id_or_email) ) {
$id = (int) $id_or_email;
$user = get_userdata($id);
} elseif ( is_object($id_or_email) ) {
if ( !empty($id_or_email->user_id) ) {
$id = (int) $id_or_email->user_id;
$user = get_userdata($id);
} elseif ( !empty($id_or_email->comment_author_email) ) {
return $content; //Commenters not logged in don't need filtering
}
} else {
$user = get_user_by_email($id_or_email);
}
if(!$user) return $content;
$username = $user->user_login;
$email = md5( str_replace('%USER%', $username, $this->email_template) );
return preg_replace("/gravatar.com\/avatar\/(.+)\?/", "gravatar.com/avatar/{$email}?", $content);
}
return $content;
}
function bp_avatar( $content, $params ){
if( is_array($params) && $params['object'] == 'user' ){
return $this->wp_avatar($content, $params['item_id']);
}
return $content;
}
}
global $DisableUserGravatar;
$DisableUserGravatar = new DisableUserGravatar();Create a file in wp-content/mu-plugins with the content above.
I’ll put this up on wordpress.org as a plugin.
Xevo
ParticipantIsn’t the only big difference between wpmu and wp, the blogs? If you can cramp those in a single table, I wouldn’t see why it’s impossible to run buddypress on a single wp.
