In reply to: BP in Education…
wickedbob
ParticipantI’m currently contemplating moving a network of educators to the BP framework as we currently use WordPress.
My only problem is that BP is fairly limited at the moment in terms of sharing.
We need groups to have file sharing capabilities as well as blog post updates appearing within them – two things which it currently doesn’t do.
Ideally these would run out of the box.
But it looks like I might have to magically pull some time out of my hat and start coding some plugins – not my ideal.
Another alternative we looked at was Elgg… it has the feature set we require but I find it really clunky to use, navigate and customize. I much prefer the ‘design’ of BP and WordPress.

Jeff Sayre
ParticipantOkay, since we’ve had a few people make this mistake I need to ask this just in case. Everyone in this thread who is having 404 issues is running BuddyPress with WPMU and not the single-user version of WordPress, correct?
This means downloading WordPress from here: https://mu.wordpress.org/download/
Specifically @Sgoetz-
Running WPMU, ran automatic upgrade to 2.7.1 prior to installing BP
Were you running WPMu 2.7.1-beta1 before upgrading?
If so, you cannot upgrade from beta1 to public 2.7.1 using the automatic upgrade feature. This is because the upgrade script “sees” WPMU 2.7.1 = WPMU 2.7.1, meaning it does not upgrade you from beta1 since it thinks you are already running 2.7.1.
So, you must manually upgrade WPMU following these instructions: https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WPMU

Jeff Sayre
ParticipantBdegier-
As JFcarter suggests, you should make a backup of your database before beginning this process. Your BuddyPress data should be in the same DB as your WPMU data. You also may have some image files in other locations, so back those up as well. Finally, be carful of what you delete in wp-content. If you have any customized themes, or 3rd-party plugins, you will want to make sure you have a backup just in case.
Now, upgrading WPMU: Unless this issue has been recently fixed, you cannot use the auto update feature to upgrade WPMU 2.7.1-beta1 to the public release version of WPMU 2.7.1. This is because the upgrade script “sees” WPMU 2.7.1 = WPMU 2.7.1, meaning it does not upgrade you from beta1 since it thinks you are already running 2.7.1.
So, you need to do the old manual upgrade of WPMU following these procedures.
Upgrading BuddyPress: follow these instructions.

ParticipantYou did follow this:
https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-buddypres
and do have the member them in the correct place?
where it says:
6. The plugins are now activated and running, but you will need to move the themes to the correct locations. Move /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/ to /wp-content/bp-themes/
7. You can use any WordPress theme as your root blog theme, but BuddyPress comes bundled with an extra “home†theme that you can optionally use. To install it, move /wp-content/bp-themes/bphome/ to /wp-content/themes/bphome/.
you will then need to edit the member theme to reflect similar changes in the base theme.
Hope that helps.

ParticipantI didn’t notice status changed to resolve, but it’s not. It’s somewhat resolved because I remove those lines.
I have a perfect working WPMU 2.7.1, and all I want to do is to add those lines as wordpress mu’s tutorial site suggests for security reason. I don’t need BBPress. I had tried installed BBPress before when I first installed BuddyPress. I didn’t get BBPress worked with BuddyPress so I ditched BBPress.
Clearly I have a working WPMU 2.7.1, and working BuddyPress 1.0 (final). Though my only problem is by adding those lines, the logout link won’t work properly. It’s obvious it has to do with cookies and sessions.
So by removing those lines meaning I’m not doing exactly like WordPress MU tutorial suggests. So it’s not resolved. I wonder because what I did with BBPress before and then decided not to use BBPress by removing it has an after effect that affects my situation now? I remember that BBPress requires you to mess around with cookies and stuffs like that.

ParticipantI would like to install buddypress onto my existing wordpress install (regular wordpress not wordpress mu).
At this time, BuddyPress only works with WPMU 2.7.1. You cannot use it with single-version WordPress.
How would I upgrade this to a wordpress mu/buddypress install?
https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=11126
will this integrate with my current wordpress theme
No. You will either need to use the standard BuddyPress themes that come with the package, or update your custom themes as detailed here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-buddypress/upgrading-from-rc-1/
May 5, 2009 at 10:50 pm #44551KitWit
ParticipantWordPress (regular) and BuddyPress don’t work together (yet). You need to install MU first and then BP.

Participantoh JJJ – to answer your Q, my username / login comes from wordpress.org so the integration works as far me logging in but there is clearly a problem with the way it is functioning. My inkling here is bug, perhaps an enhancement request. while is doesnt bother me per se it is a problem and requires a “fix”.

KeymasterNothing nothing nothing!
BuddyPress is a plugin FOR WordPress MU. Your question is, what does a WP plugin need to do to work in WPMU? The biggest differences I am aware of is that WPMU plugins don’t utilise the activation/deactivation functions that WP plugins do.
I suspect if you search the WPMU site or message board, someone will have asked this question before.

KeymasterGladsteins, there won’t be a /members directory in your structure.
Within your /bp-themes/ directory are there themes in there? Namely bpmember? If your /bp-themes/ directory is empty, then nothing will show up in your settings screen.
Let me ask all of you a question. On your root blog, the main blog of your site, what do you all have your WordPress MU Permalinks set to? Admin->Settings->Permalinks

Okay, thanks for the updated information. From those error messages, it appears that PHP is having trouble saving session information. This will cause big issues. However, this is not a BuddyPress nor WordPress-specific issue. This is an issue with your web server.
I suggest that you contact your web hosting firm and ask them to help you.

“Please move the default BuddyPress themes to their correct location (move
\apache2triad\htdocs\wordpress/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/ to
\apache2triad\htdocs\wordpress/wp-content/bp-themes/) and reload this page.”See all the folders in the correct spots
Do NOT have option to activate Buddy Theme in Admin themes
Nor do I see a /members dir in WP structure

InactiveI’m also getting 404 errors on the links to anything members/groups/etc. BUT my WordPress installation worked fine (with some users that I believe were imported from our other test system) before installing BP. We didn’t import any blogs, themes or plugins from our other install — just some user accounts.

ParticipantArghagain-
Adding to what jjj and TheEasyButton are saying, if you are still having issues then it is important to start from scratch. You must get WPMU functioning properly before installing BuddyPress. Then make sure BuddyPress is functioning properly before installing and integrating bbPress.
From what you are saying, it is not clear if you are upgrading WPMU from 2.6 or 2.7? Did you already have a working copy of WPMU installed? If so, what version?
If you are upgrading from 2.7 to 2.7.1 following these upgrading instructions, then make sure you finish the upgrading process by logging into WPMU’s backend as site admin and going to “Site Admin -> Upgrade”. Also, make sure you use the wp-config-sample.php file that comes with WPMU 2.7.1 and modify that version as needed. Do not use an older version of the wp-config.php file.
If you do not have an active site with real members and you are only in testing mode, then you can safely delete everything and perform a clean install. This means that you do not have any data in the MySQL DB that is worth saving.
If that is the case, save to a separate file any custom themes you may have created or installed. Also, save any 3rd-party plugins you may have installed for WPMU. Then, start from scratch. Delete everything including your MySQL DB. Once you have reinstalled WPMU succesfully, you can copy back your custom themes and 3rd-party plugins into their proper locations.
Finally, if you are still using BP RC2, it is time to switch to BuddyPress 1.0, the public release version of BP.

Mark
ParticipantThanks for the response.
I bought the themes from StudioPress and see they have made a Grunge Buddypress theme for another client. I will try and contract them to do the same for myself.
Unfortunately since we will be using a purchased theme, I would not be able to make it open to everyone, however I will ask StudioPress to consider adding it to their product list for sale.
I will also look at the coding myself as I am generally good with be able to follow systems that are well documented. If this is the case I will look into creating themes using free/gpl wordpress themes. What my clients have been after is more of a wordpress modular feel than buddypress.
I am also looking into integrating phpMotion and will report back to this forum as my clients all want locally hosted/owned video/images site wide and on user profiles.
Regards
Mark

ParticipantHere’s definition.
http://wpmu.org/the-wordpress-mu-guide/site-options/standard-site-options/
wpmu doesn’t have the option you are looking for. But you can use 2nd option with a plugin to moderate new blogs. To find out more, visit wpmu forums and wpmudev.
This has nothing to do with BuddyPress.

ParticipantAll or most of wordpress plugins DO WORK on wpmu under /plugins/ folder. But for the case of /mu-plugins/ folder, you should only use the plugins that supports wpmu in general.

KeymasterWordPress and bbPress use several cookies to ensure your identity across all directories and areas that are important to the applications. When those cookies are out of alignment, things start working strangely like you describe.
The best thing is to check the cookies that your site is dropping, review the information inside them (typically with Firefox) and see if there are any places that are obviously incorrect or pointing to the wrong locations. Then, you use those global variables to adjust the settings back into place.
This is one of those bugs that’s difficult to diagnose, difficult to direct you to a fix, and hard to explain where to even start.
It’s also PIVOTAL that all of your separate applications (WPMU, BP, bbP) are all correctly installed/upgraded to begin with. If you’ve never gotten to a point where they were playing nice together in the first place, it will be extremely hard to figure out what’s wrong.

KeymasterThe documentation/codex area provides a ton of documentation that can help you with all of these things, but there is no magic button you can press to make this happen.
There are dozens of functions and loops that need to be installed and addressed on several files and themes to make all of BuddyPress work the way it does. All we can do is document them for you, and let you give it a try yourself. It’s up to the growing audience of BP developers to start creating themes for 1.0, and that will eventually happen, I guarantee it.
If you’re in over your head and desperate for a theme asap, it may be time to hire someone to help you out. If you’re not looking for custom functionality and simply want a revamped BP theme, I might suggest joining the WordPress developers mailing lists and asking some WP professionals for assistance. Otherwise right now we’re pretty lenient about users asking for specific requests here (meaning we will lock the topic but we won’t delete it or spam it.)
