In the BuddyPress plugin there is a folder bp-themes. In this folder is the default BuddyPress theme. The reason to use a child theme is to not edit these files making upgrades as easy as a few clicks.
A child theme is a WordPress theme that has a parent. The child theme gets all it’s files from the parent. If you want to override a file then you copy the file and folder structure over to the child theme.
Example: say you want to ad something to the header. instead of going into the BP plugin folder and changing something you would copy the header.php over to the child theme and edit it. Since it’s a child theme it will override the same file in the bp-default folder.
Read this on how to create a child theme. https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Another issue is if you are not using a BP enabled theme then you will have to use the BuddyPress template pack to get the corresponding files and functions working on a standard WordPress theme.
BuddyPress 1.3 works properly with the init hook now.
Its not a WordPress issue.
Its an issue that in some cases, some plugins break the automatic upgraded process of localized WordPress. The ticket I linked to explain.
The plugins shoul wait for the init hook to do something, and apparently buddypress does not.
Correction: not cubepoints. I looked at clean log and it’s showing up again.
@r-a-y I’ve reported it so gurus can have a peek. Thank you for confirming on your install.
surprised not many others are reporting same issue.
If it’s a WordPress issue you need to post in https://wordpress.org/support
This site is specific to BuddyPress issues.
So, I’m using the buddypress plugin, with a fully compatible theme.
However when I use the option to install bbpress and automaticall integrate it in buddypress, nothing happens, i does create the config file, but when I go to any of the folders in the bbpress folder no installation or forum appears.
When I download it manually though I can get the installer to function well, however it asks me if I want to integrate with wordpress, buddypress already is integrated to wordpress so I don’t want to mess up.
Does anyone knows if the following issue was or is going to be fixed soon?

I’m using BuddyPress on the WordPress MS
Anyone know how to block the activity of certain sub blog so it doesn’t appear in the activity stream?
@PiManIII
I think your last question is moot. Developers will very often create plugins and offer them free under GPL license. Just take a look at the WP plugin repo where you’ll find over 13,000 free plugins: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/
But anytime you request something be created or custom-built, it’s best to offer some form of compensation; whether you want some coding done, or a deck built in your backyard
If you can access WordPress’ PHP environment, yes, of course. It’s a function call. If you can’t, you’ll probably have to create your own XMLRPC listener or via an AJAX _POST request and do it that way.
I have two issues right now.
1. I just installed and activated a theme that appears to be a WordPress and not a BuddyPress theme. Now when I try to go to my page it is showing up as a blank white page.
2. Before that happened, I had a BuddyPress theme that was working fine. All of the pages worked accept forums. After activating the forums, I received a blank white page for forums.
Hi,
I have been trying to get the avatars working correctly for a few days now and no one has a suggestion on this site that works. When I try and change my own avatar for example everything would appear to go through fine, in fact I get a “Your new avatar was uploaded successfully! message after uploading an image, cropping it. But nothing changes and I cannot see a file actually present on my FTP in the wp-content/uploads/avatars/1/ there is absolutely nothing in there.
I now permissions are fine because I can upload media to other parts of the site and I can see they are present in the uploads folder on the FTP.
I am running WordPress 3.0.5 with Buddypress 1.2.7
Is anyone able to help me with the problem.
I have a ubuntu 10.10 machine running LAMP and WordPress MU and Buddypress.
I can see and use buddypress on my local LAN but I cannot access it from the rest of the internet. I did DMZ my computer. I can pull up the default apache2 webpage from the internet showing the server is responding to outside requests. When I setup buddypress the instructions I followed had me put everything into a folder called blog. It’s located in /var/www/blog
I did have 404 errors on most buddypress pages when I setup buddypress and I solved them, however the only solutions I have found want me to change my /etc/apache2/sites-available/default configuration. If I do that I get 500 internal server errors. I am hoping someone else has encountered this before. I just built the server so everything is the new versions.
I am currently trying to customize the nav bar in my wordpress site. All of my pages are top links and its cluttering up the navigation, I want to take some of the pages and put them under a child object called community. So when people put their cursor over community it shows a drop down menu with the following pages Members, Groups, Activity, and Links. Im not much of a developer so any help would be appreciated. The site can be seen at ericaangels.org thanks.
Not really a BuddyPress issue. You need to read up on the loop.
https://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop
when you install BP it attaches to the first blog on MU. You can tell it to attach to other blogs. So you could create a community.url.com bog and put the social (BuddyPress) on that url. Some blogs do not want BP taking over but want to add on a social aspect to WordPress.
It’s possible that bp_init is fired too early in the process for it to be detected with functions.php, which is only loaded with your theme (relatively late). Try hooking to something like ‘wp’ instead. You should be able to detect whether BP is activated by doing something like
`if ( !function_exists( ‘bp_loaded’ ) )
return;`
In any case, you should be enqueuing scripts on the init action, which is unrelated to bp_init: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script
I’ve been searching the entire web, yet can’t find a proper answer to my question:
I am trying to figure out what the advantages or disadvantages are of using BuddyPress on a WordPress MU installation or WordPress Single installation.
So far I figured out that:
+ Every user can have their own blog
– Takes more maintanance for every extra site / blog
– Requires more tweaking if you want to match everything with your main site
What else am I missing here?
This looks like just a WordPress site without any BuddyPress in it?
Or is this just spam?
@ risi hi, this plugin has not been updated since 2009, and we dont know whats going on with Giovanni who owns the plugin as all effort to contact hin proved abortive. i have used the plugin before but i got error relating to Zend so i removed it which is what i will Advice u to do for now. i think some guru will look into it may be they can write something similar. but you can also use Invite anyone plugin, which is what am currently using but u have to input email manually. here is the link

Start a new thread please and supply details about your setup.
Thanks for the info. I have made it that far and have installed the forum but it is giving me a plain white page. How do I activate the forums?
@grow-stories this is an 8 month old thread you have dragged back up. please, in future, if you have an issue you require help with you must start a new post/thread and describe the problem in detail along with any applicable info such as version numbers , custom themes, plugins in use.
You activate the plugin in the usual place for plugins, you visit the BP menu section and configure any options you want such as forum install, extended profiles etc, then visit the theme section and activate the bp-default theme or suitable BP compatible theme you might have.
So I have a WordPress self hosted site and installed the BuddyPress plugin but I do not see where I can access the plugin to utilize it. Any help?
