    I’ve tried literally everything, but can’t get avatar uploads to work. Everytime a user attempts to upload an avatar and crop, it leads to the “There was a problem cropping your avatar, please try uploading it again” message. I’m not using any other plugins, just buddypress (1.2.7), wordpress (3.0.4 multisite), and a custom child theme (fishbook). There doesn’t appear to be any javascript issues, and the permissions are all 755. I’ve seen countless threads about this go dead, but it is imperative I get this up and running. Help is much appreciated!

    I have created a network called Open Media Education (http://www.openmediaeducation.net/). In the super admin menu I created two new sites:

    1) http://www.openmediaeducation.net//com480-sp11-jcu/
    2) http://www.openmediaeducation.net//com311-sp11/

    When I install the themes on the local sites I get different results. If I use the default wordpress theme it uses the local site title (for example, site #1). But when I use the BuddyPress theme, it uses the network name, and not the site name that I enter on the local site. So #2 reads “Open Media Education,” but it should say “Digital Media Culture – COM311 – JCU – SP11.” If I switch the the theme back to the default wordpress theme it displays the correct theme name.

    How do I fix it so that I can use the buddypress theme but retain the local site name?

    It really depends on what you want to do with the wiki. If it’s going to be a workspace for individual members or BP groups, I would recommend something like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-wiki/, or the new plugin that I’m building with @dwenaus https://github.com/boonebgorges/buddypress-docs

    If you want your wiki to be more along the lines of Wikipedia – a shared knowledge base, visible to all members of the site as well as the public – then MediaWiki is pretty good, but it’s a bear to integrate and keep integrated. You might accomplish something similar by setting up a blog on your MS installation as the ‘wiki blog’ and then enabling a plugin like http://wp-wiki.org/

    How do I fix this?? Is driving me insane, unless I am logged into my wordpress I cannot see my site!!

    Please help

    BuddyPress’ forums are group-specific like the forums on Facebook’s group pages.

    If you’re looking for a traditional forum, then stick with phpBB.

    Also, stay tuned to the new bbPress WordPress plugin:
    https://trac.bbpress.org/timeline

    There will probably be an alpha release for that in the next month or so.

    It’s better to be clear when posting!

    You can use this snippet in your theme’s functions.php:

    `function ray_bp_get_the_topic_last_poster_name( $name ) {
    global $forum_template;

    return str_replace($forum_template->topic->topic_last_poster_displayname, $forum_template->topic->topic_last_poster_login, $name);
    }
    add_filter( ‘bp_get_the_topic_last_poster_name’, ‘ray_bp_get_the_topic_last_poster_name’ );`

    This snippet is part of my BuddyPress Usernames Only plugin, which you might be interested in:

    I have WP MutliSite and BuddyPress – the most current versions. Users can create their own blogs on subdomains. When a user adds the “Groups” widget or “Who’s Online Avatars” widget in their blog the Gravatars display, but the custom-uploaded avatars do not.

    A Gravatar shows up like this http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/c1e3f5c892557fc3ddd9667477b8cb43?d=wavatar&s=50

    A custom avatar is here, but does not display: http://www.lockedndenied.com/files/avatars/1/2ea315e8ed513103b85f3e2a8906ae76-bpthumb.jpg

    Do we know why this is?
    I just now finally got the fix for uploading images via WordPress.org for multisite – its an .htaccess problem. And the folks there say this is a BP problem.

    hey folks, any advice on which wiki plugin I should choose for buddypress? @boonebgorges it looks like you’re using mediawiki for cuny commons. Have you been happy with the decision to use that instead of a plugin?

    thanks!

    Hello, I am using the bp-columns theme. Not very many 3rd party plugins are being used. I have buddypress 1.2.7, +wordpress 3.04

    I have a support group on my site. I have a user that is trolling to everyone, so I decided to ban him from the group.

    Saying “user banned successfully” I assumed that did the trick.

    Well he just rejoined within a few hours, and I was like “how???”

    So I pinpointed that if you ban a member from a group, they can just re-join via posting a forum reply!

    Please help!

    I need to display a list of the profile fields i have defined in my sidebar so that a user can click on one and be shown all the users that have selected that field for their profile. Is this possible?

    It basically so that all users have selected skills, such as photographer, bricklayer, sound engineer etc. Then when somebody comes to look for a specific skill from a worker they would click say, photographer, and then all the photographers will be listed.

    I have tried to mod Buddypress Profile Widget for Blogs but this doesnt seem to work for the latest wordpress and the profile fields are listed in a broken format and cant be linked

    thanks

    This is why it’s so important to provide as accurate a picture as possible:

    Initially you stated:
    system is not sending..
    Prompting my response for more detail but later you say:
    but I have no problem in my wordpress blog.. this only occur in buddypress one

    A vital piece of info that changes the nature of responses and needed to be provided from the outset.

    @DJPaul Can you elaborate a little on this, is there in fact a possible issue between BP and WP when it comes to email sending? BP after all does have greater requirements for sending emails than WP, but I’ve never encountered an issue that was directly related to BP where email was concerned – as far as I’m aware! If there is a possible conflict is it something that can be flagged to look further into?

    Savannah: In the beginning I did start completely fresh. I began by deleting my original website by uninstalling WordPress through Dreamcast, deleting all databases and then clearing out the few remaining files via WebFTP. That erased all the traces of my previous website and, in theory, made everything like it was the first time I installed anything on this particular domain. So I do consider this process for me a completely fresh approach. I know the importance of just starting clean in order to trouble shoot, so that’s what I tried to do.

    This is my first post to these forums, and I have spent considerable time over the past few days here looking for a solution to my very common problem: forum posting will not work on my site. After trying many of the solutions posted here in various threads, I still cannot post anything to forums. So…

    What follows is a lengthy transcript of the very detailed process I took to troubleshoot the problem for myself and in accordance to the guidance I received in this forum. I would appreciate any help anyone can provide me:

    — I had a previous WordPress setup on my site http://www.its-your-move-org so I did this:

    1. Deleted WordPress from existing domain via Dreamhost One-Click Install “Manage Installed Applications” function.

    2. Deleted all remaining files associated with site via WebFTP.

    3. Installed WordPress with One-Click Install > custom installation > at my main http://its-your-move.org address. > I also chose the function “Automatically create database.”

    4. After successful WordPress install > From WordPress Admin Panel > Installed BuddyPress 1.2.7. plugin from plugin menu > Activated it.

    5. Under Settings menu > Permalinks > Updated permalink structure by choosing “Day and name” > Saved changes.

    6. Activated BuddyPress Default 1.2.7. theme from Manage Themes menu. (The theme that came up at the very beginning was Twenty Ten.)

    7. Went to BuddyPress Menu > Selected Forums Setup > Clicked “Set up a new bbPress installation” > Pressed “Complete Installation” > Received message: “All done! Configuration settings have been saved to the file bb-config.php in the root of your WordPress install.”

    8. Clicked on Settings menu > checked box “Anyone can register” > Saved changes

    9. Opened up new window and visited my website home page: http://www.its-your-move.org

    10. Clicked on “Groups” tab at top of page > On page 1. Details: Created “Test” Group; Group Description: “Test” > Click “Next Step” > On page 2. Settings: Made sure “Enable discussion forum” box was checked > Selected “This is a public group” under Privacy Options > Clicked “Next Step” > On page 3. Avatar: Did not upload avatar on following page > Clicked “Next Step” > On page 4. Invites: Clicked “Finish” after receiving message in orange: “Once you have built up friend connections you will be able to invite others to your group. You can send invites any time in the future by selecting the “Send Invites” option when viewing your new group.”

    11. The Home page for my new “Test” group was brought up automatically after clicking “Finish” on last page.

    12. Clicked on “Forum” in the light grey link bar. > “Post New Topic:” fields open with message at top in orange: “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”

    13. Entered this information in “Post New Topic:” Fields:

    Title: Test
    Content: Test
    Tags: Test

    14. Clicked “Post Topic” > Received two error messages on following page:

    In red: There was an error when creating the topic
    In orange: There are no posts for this topic.

    — So… I then attempted hnla’s solution in BP forums.

    15. From the page I received the two error messages > I clicked on “Admin” in the light grey link bar > Clicked on light-blue command “Group Settings” > unchecked “Enable discussion forum” box > Clicked “Save Changes” at bottom of page > Received green message: “Group settings were successfully updated.” > re-checked “Enable discussion forum” Box > Clicked “Save Changes” again > Received green message: “Group settings were successfully updated.”

    18. Clicked on “Forum” in the light grey link bar. > “Post New Topic:” fields open with message at top in orange: “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”

    19. Entered this information in “Post New Topic:” Fields:

    Title: Test
    Content: Test
    Tags: Test

    20. Clicked “Post Topic” > Received two error messages on following page:

    In red: There was an error when creating the topic
    In orange: There are no posts for this topic.

    — So… I checked if I could post anything directly through “Forums” tab

    21. Clicked on “Forums” tab at top of page > This opens up Group Forums Directory” > Received message in orange: “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”

    22. Clicked on “New Topic” grey box > Entered this information in “Post a New Topic:” Fields:

    Title: Test
    Content: Test
    Tags: Test
    Post in Group Forum: Test

    23. Clicked “Post Topic” > I was automatically returned to Group Forums Directory and again received this message in orange: “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”

    — So… I tried to re-install bbPress forums again

    24. From WordPress Admin Panel > Went to BuddyPress Menu > Selected Forums Setup > Received message: “bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install” > Clicked “re-install” link > Clicked “Set up a new bbPress installation” > Pressed “Complete Installation” > Received message: “All done! Configuration settings have been saved to the file bb-config.php in the root of your WordPress install.”

    25. Returned to my website > Clicked on “Groups” tab at top of page > Selected “Test” group > Clicked on “Forum” in the light grey link bar. > “Post New Topic:” fields open with message at top in orange: “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”

    26. Entered this information in “Post New Topic:” Fields:

    Title: Test
    Content: Test
    Tags: Test

    27.Clicked “Post Topic” > Received two error messages on following page:

    In red: There was an error when creating the topic
    In orange: There are no posts for this topic.

    — So… Checked some other things I heard about in the BP Forums:

    28. Through my WebFTP > I confirmed that file “bb-config.php” is located in the same place and level as “wp-config.php”

    — And this is where I decided to stop and ask for help.

    I do not know much about programming or dealing with databases, but I suspect after all of these tests and trying other things on a different site that:

    Somehow, the bbPress tables are not actually being created in the database where the WordPress tables are. I see no sign of the bbPress tables in the database when I examine the database via Dreamhost’s phpMyAdmin.

    Again, I do not know that much about databases, but I do think this might be the root of my particular problem, seeing as how other people’s solutions have not worked. So…

    Is there a way to just add the tables to my database?

    And any other thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

    I’ve added buddypress to my standard wordpress site with my own theme. Then I used the Buddypress Template Pack plugin to make it compatible. Which worked relatively well. But when I get to the step abotu the html structure, and update all the files, all fo the buddypress pages don’t seem to update like they should.

    I’m trying to change one line to add:
    `

    `
    To all the pages, but when I try and change all the places in buddypress where is says
    `

    `
    so I can update them on the site, I change them, but test it by going to a users profile, and my changes don’t affect.

    Such as on http://thenozzle.net/members/mrniceguy/profile/public/index.php, I’ve edited all fo the files specified int he template pack to add:

    `

    `

    But none affect this page! If you view source you’ll se it still said the simple

    `

    `

    How do I edit these pages!?

    Thanks in advance!

    Just as an update, I ended up using these two plugins to achieve the desired result:

    Capability Manager – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/capsman/
    BuddyPress ACL Profile – https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-xprofiles-acl/

    @mercime Basically the build of BuddyPress software on this website is pretty old. It has a bug where it doesn’t check for missing closing tags. As I have admin permission on the site, I went in and edited the post and corrected the markup. Don’t worry, this bug was fixed in the release versions of BuddyPress a few versions ago :)

    @johnjamesjacoby has indicated that he going to update the WordPress and BuddyPress versions on the site this weekend. That will make things much better, though will inevitably involve some downtime whilst the upgrade is performed.

    Or take a look at an existing WordPress plugin that adds a page in the same area that does you want, and try to reverse engineer it. My Achievements (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/achievements) plugin is quite well documented ;)

    BuddyPress uses the WordPress mailing routines. It’s probably due to a higher quantity of emails that your BuddyPress site is trying to send, vs WordPress.

    Depends on your webhost actually. Some had to use a plugin to make mail work https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ and I’ve read others use this https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mail-from/

    Check out the BP Skeleton Component:
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-skeleton-component/

    It teaches you how to create a whole plugin for BuddyPress; you won’t need to use all the code in the skeleton component, but it’ll help you structure your code for BP.

    The functions you want to look at in particular are:
    `bp_example_setup_globals()
    bp_example_setup_nav()`

    Both are located in bp-example-core.php.

    Hope that helps.

    There are two hooks BuddyPress uses when editing a profile that you can hook into:

    `do_action( ‘xprofile_profile_field_data_updated’, $field_id, $_POST );
    do_action( ‘xprofile_updated_profile’, $bp->displayed_user->id, $posted_field_ids, $errors );`

    These actions are in the xprofile_screen_edit_profile() function in bp-xprofile.php.

    If you’re unfamilar with WP plugin development, check out the WP Plugin API:

    Create a new WP page with the verbiage you want to add.

    You might want to create your new page with a custom page template:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Creating_Your_Own_Page_Templates

    Then set this new page as your frontpage:

    There’s a new group category plugin that might help you out:
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-group-hierarchy/

    I haven’t tested it though.
