Hello I am very new to Buddy press but have played around with WordPress for a few months now :)
I have to set up a blog for a new and up coming band who already have a lot of followers on twitter, fb ect…. So i am going to set them up a blog, will buddy press be the best thing for this you think?
The main things i want is a home page which displays latest blog they have posted, then a page about each member 3 of them with blog feeds, and maybe integration with twitter.
and then an “about us” and “Events” Page. Also future plans will be a forum, shout box and also chat rooms so they can talk to the band. I want people to be able to regester so they can recive updates and also post comments on blogs not on there pages.
Is there a place i need to start?
    Thanks :)

The specif problem after a new user registers on the site they are not receiving an activation email to complete the process.
Yes, it is on a multisite and I haven’t done anything significant other than install buddypress and activate the buddypress theme.

I assume this is on multisite? How exactly do you mean “does not work”? What doesn’t? What are you trying to do that doesn’t work? What did you do just before?

Version 1.2.6 with WordPress 3.0: New User Activation not working

If I enable buddypress, new user activation does not work.
If I disable buddypress, new user activation works.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

It’s no different than say twitter where you have your @username and then Joe User on your profile

ok i try to get a little clearer/break my help request down a little bit:

Is it possible to give a wordpress user-role the default-capability of looking into every bp group without being a member of it? (and ideally getting activity-updates via mail)?

    Hi,

I know it has been done to death, but I’m going around in circles and cannot find a solution.

    BuddyPress v 1.2.6
    s2member v 3.2.9
    Wordpress v 3.0.1

    Problem:
Upon creating membership, members cannot crop their uploaded avatar. The facility just is not there.

    Solution:
I have been searching for several days for a solution to this problem. None of the options that I have seen (and tried) have worked, and many are completely irrelevant to my WP install (for example, there is no “Miscellaneous” in settings).

Having searched for a while, it seems there are plenty of people having this problem, and that it has been going on for several months. This is a pretty basic function that I would have thought would have had more emphasis. Why is it so hard to find a fix for this?

I’m not a coder, but I have tried to rectify this using all the code alterations offered (ones where the locations of the files to edit have actually been identified and not just assumed to be obvious to someone like me!)
    Nothing is working.

Please don’t link to other threads stating the same problem. I have been going around in circles on this following every link available already.

I really want to get this fixed, but I just can’t find any solution to it. For such a fundamental and common problem I would have thought a proper fix would have been released, considering this has been going on for months.

Please, I’m begging you, if there is a solution to this that actually works with the versions stated above, I’d really, really, really love to see it. :)

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi,
I have a membership site where each member’s login name is their email adress.
I just installed BP and it is revealing everyone’s email adress because it uses the default “login” field from wordpress, instead of displaying the full name field.

It is a huge privacy breach.

How do I change this ?

    ** here’s what’s happening now :
When someone new registers on my site, they login as johnspersonalemail@gmail.com and their “first name” wordpress field is John, last name is “Doe”.
But their BP member URL is mywebsite.com/members/johnspersonalemailgmail-com
and it’s also clearly displayed on their member page : John Doe @johnspersonalemailgmail-com

    ** here’s what I want
I want their login information to be hidden on all BP pages.
So the member URL would be mywebsite.com/members/johndoe
and on the page it would show John Doe @johndoe

How do I do this ?

Thanks for your help, I’m looking forward to your helpful answers.

    Sebastien

Thats one but i’m not sure it will work with BP. My thought was you could create a “verified” role and then do an if statement for some code to show a verified check badge.

I may make a plugin that adds a verified check.

In the trunk version of BuddyPress (what will become BP 1.3), I’ve changed the default theme to support the custom menus that were introduced in WordPress 3.0. What this means is that the default theme now supports nested menu items, in the same way that twentyten does (hover dropdowns).

It looks like something this (Activity is nested under Groups):

You will note, however, that the styling is horrible. I’d love it if one of the community here who design themes is able to dive in and produce a patch (or just an updated CSS file). Restrictions: no javascript. You can find the CSS that I mostly copied-and-pasted from twentyten at the very bottom of http://svn.buddypress.org/trunk/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/default.css

I’m in the same boat, experienced in WordPress and building my first BuddyPress site. I can’t speak to all the specifics of the photo gallery but overall I’d say yes, a site like that is possible. I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a good photo gallery BP plugin out there.

BuddyPress functions should be pretty intuitive if you know WordPress, although BuddyPress is not as well documented. So it helps if you know enough PHP to understand how a function works just by reading the code.

    Good luck!

I tried the following now: I deactivated all Plugins, also Buddypress. Then I tried to upload an image to the Mediathek in the Adminarea of WordPress, but I get the same error, that I get in Buddypress with Avatars. So I think this is not a Buddypress Issue, but I do not understand where this issue came from and how to fix this? Do you have one more idea?

    Hi all,

I’m new to Buddypress but pretty seasoned with WordPress.

I have been asked by a client to produce a kind of photographer’s social network site, similar to `www.modelmayhem.com` and `www.purestorm.com` and I wondered if Buddypress was a possible solution?

I have zero experience with Drupal or Joomla so, if possible, I would love to be able to stick with WordPress on this.

    The site would need to have the following features;

    Private messaging,
    Photo uploads,
    Photo gallery creation
    Photo / photo gallery commenting,
    Facebook style ‘Friends’

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    @Bowromir, Thanks!

1.5.2 comes now with a jQuery slideshow for the front page and your pages.
A post template to list the latest posts from a category.
You can add CSS into a separate area, to keep CSS changes update save.
    And much more…

I hope I explain this right. The active theme on my site is Detox, which is bp enabled. However, I am using the Page Theme plugin so I can use different themes on different pages. The theme I want to use on two different pages is the Ecolines free theme (https://wordpress.org/extend/themes/eco). So it’s that theme where I want the bar to show up. (live link: http://herppeople.com/herpauctions/).

I have installed the plugin using the corrected file above, and this is the error I get….

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare bp_dtheme_post_update() (previously declared in /home/***MY SITE****/public_html/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/ajax.php:113) in /home/*****MY SITE****/public_html/wp-content/themes/Detox/_inc/ajax.php on line 92

So I think the fact that my primary theme, Detox, is bp enabled, is conflicting with the plugin. Clear as mud? LOL!!!!!

Re plugin – you might want to look at how BP Group CSS plugin is done – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-css/ where CSS can be set by group

Re pure CSS manipulation – filter body class to add e.g. username to body class so you can manipulate layout, colors, fonts, etc. in individual member pages

@paulhastings0 – I was able to setup a local host environment on a Mac for WP 3.0.1 AND enabling the multisite user (though I never got to testing any sites in DW yet as I immediately installed BP). An outstanding tutorial on how to do this can be found here: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/wordpress/how-to-set-up-a-killer-wordpress-testing-environment-locally/

1 – Make sure you have multisite enabled. https://codex.wordpress.org/Tools_Network_SubPanel
2 – Enable creation of new sites in the “Registration settings” section under “Super Admin” > “Options”

I think they want the main tabs to have drop downs. Search https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=drop+down+menu&sort=

There are a bunch but the problem is they won’t match the BP default style. You’ll have to add the code to call the wp custom nav and delete the hard coded BP nav.
