    Howdy y’all!

    I’m really bad at using technology, so sometimes I wonder why I’m pursuing the things that I am. Alas and alack it seems to be the world we live in. That said, I decided to extend my wordpress blog to the buddypress sphere to have a social networking site.

    I used simple scripts through my host service to install both wordpress (upgraded to 3.0.1) and buddypress (1.2.6). I have not been able to utilize or link to any forums although I have set it up from dashboard. I have all the social functions enabled also.

    My host informs that when I installed wordpress it was not wordpress MU. Could this be the issue? Should I download wordpress MU and then upload it to my host? If I do I can easily import my existing wordpress site?

    Thanks for any and all advice.
    Jon

    I think you can use the User Avatar Plugin

    I highly recommend Laughingsquid.

    They are one of the WordPress recommended hosts, https://wordpress.org/hosting/
    and I think they are great.

    Hello everyone.

    I registered my domain name under fatcow.com and then installed wordpress to my site, only to find out later that their servers do not support social networking based platform. I canceled my account. Where should i get my new domain name ? Any recommendations ?

    One of the primary reasons I ended up going with the wordpress+buddypress combo was because of the usefulness of the extended profiles. I’m not sure how important profiles are for other sites but for what I’m trying to use it for, see http://physicsgrad.com, they are absolutely crucial. One of the main issues I’m having so far is that people generally don’t feel the need to fill out their profile information so I’m looking for some kind of incentive or recognition attached to their profile that is generated when they’ve filled out some amount of their profile, say more than half. I’ve considered utilizing the “buddypress verified” plugin and adapting it so that when I give it a check, it is used to indicate users who have good profiles

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-verified/screenshots/

    However, I don’t like the idea of doing it manually because members can easily change their profile info without me noticing and then they will go unmarked. I also considered using the achievements plugin but I couldn’t find an event that marked out how well a profile was filled out.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello community!

    I’m a newbie using Buddypress. I’m using WordPress MU, Buddypress and bbPress Integration plugin. So, I want to integrate one forum per blog created by WordPress MU.

    I mean, if I create a blog in WordPress MU and apply Buddypress theme (activating blogs before in the main Buddypress installation), I want a forum inside it.

    Is that possible? I can only create a principal forum in my principal blog (localhost/wordpress is the main WP installation).

    Thanks in advance!

    EDIT: I included define ( ‘BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG’, true ); to my wp-config.php file, but now the main forum is shared between every single blog in my WP MU platform. I want independent forums.

    What host provider are you running the install from? Do you have command line access?

    I’ve done that, it’s a BP problem…

    @Annoyed, What theme are you using? Do you have a link I could take a look at. Often the problem is that a theme or plugin includes a different version of jquery to the that comes with WordPress. You could load jquery from google. Put this code at the top of your functions.php (in your theme folder)

    `function my_init_method() {
    wp_deregister_script( ‘jquery’ );
    wp_register_script( ‘jquery’, ‘http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4/jquery.min.js’);
    }

    add_action(‘init’, ‘my_init_method’);`

    I get this message after submitting an event registration on a page.

    Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output … header.php:3) … …

    I did read the wordpress codex and googled around bp solutions, and there’re no breaks and spaces in the coding.

    here’s the first few lines of my header.php

    the page ended with:

    I’m using the latest version eventpress plugin, latest stable version of buddypress/wordpress

    I just created an event on my site, and guess I expected a “register” button next to the event. Other than being invited, how do people register for events if they just happen across the event and weren’t invited?

    I’m not aware of any documentation outside of the software itself. The functions that do the sync are pretty short and easy to understand. Check out `xprofile_sync_wp_profile()` and `xprofile_sync_bp_profile()` in buddypress/bp-xprofile.php to get a sense of just what’s being synced.

    Hi Paul, I am using WordPress 3.0 and BuddyPress 1.2.6

    I have not changed any settings – Buddypress comes right out of the box using member’s login info in the urls.
    My URL for instance is /members/admin and stays that way even though my full name is “FirstName LastName”.

    I need BuddyPress to use the full name field, not the username field.

    Can you help with this ?

    @modemlooper, if I create a custom link item to “example.com/activity”, and then click on that link, it loads the correct page and applies the ‘current-menu-item’ class to the li element. I’m testing this on BP trunk and WP 3.0.1.

    If I put a Page into my menu, it gives it the class ‘current_page_item’ as it recognises it is part of the WordPress object hierarchy.

    @modemlooper Components in BP 1.3 will exists as Pages in WordPress. The Pages will be created as part of a new Setup procedure.

    Thread #1 has been successful so far, so let’s try again. Anyone for CSS for nested comments on blog posts? From memory, the regular WordPress classes are in, but the style just needs adding.

    First of all I would change it back to the “full name” field until you figure this out.

    What versions of WordPress and BuddyPress are you using?

    is there any documentation which fields get synchronized with which fields? maybe some more fields could be hooked up for synchronization? since you said: `with changes automatically synced back to WP.` I’d like to know what goes where and when :-)

    just curios here.. and thanks for clarifying this for me.

    I’m wondering the best way to go about this. I just set up a new install of WordPress (Network enabled) and installed BBPress…

    The domain that will eventually be used isn’t yet pointed to the server, because it’s necessary for the current site that is running (on another server).

    However, just using the IP Address (as the domain in General > Settings) doesn’t seem to be working out so well.

    Would there be problems if I just pointed another domain to this server, for the sake of the building of this project — and then, when finished, point the original domain here?

    Or is there another, better way?

    Try switching off BP, and registering a new user through WP’s normal signup procedure wp-signup.php. Are WP emails being sent? If not, then this is probably not a BP problem, but is a problem with the configuration of your WP installation.

    For the first stage of the process (blog, feeds, twitter integration) BuddyPress is overkill. WordPress by itself will be great for this purpose.

    If you want forums and other social features, BuddyPress will be a good option. The best place to start is by installing BP on a test installation, playing around with it and asking questions in these forums. Good luck!

    I learned PHP by trying to build something. Find a BuddyPress or a WordPress plugin that does something small but interesting, and pick it apart. Try to modify it to do something similar.

    If you’ve got a system with lots of people, you may very well have more than one person named “John Smith”. That’s why you need unique identifiers like usernames. The regular name “John Smith” then acts like a piece of profile data. This works the same way in WP as in BP, though WP and BP (for a variety of reasons) store that full name info in different places.

    The BP-WP profile syncing is basically a syncing mechanism for full names and email addresses. That’s because WP doesn’t have very extensive built-in profiles. On the vast majority of BP installations, users will never have any contact with their WP profile data – all of their profile management will happen through BP, with changes automatically synced back to WP.

    ok so the Wp one would be the username and the BP one whatever I want? still I think its unnecessary.

    btw. where can I read more about this supposedly synchronization between the WP and BP profiles?
    I mean this is not activated so what gets synchronized and when? `Disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing?:`
