ParticipantI haven’t done a thorough check, but what about BBPress Direct Access (as pointed out by Andy) and BBPress plugins?

KeymasterIn the current theme setup, no… So you’re not missing anything. There is no general “New Topic” page mostly because the number of forums that people can create by being able to create their own groups can grow to be pretty enormous.
It’s the difference between http://testbp.org/forums and http://testbp.org/bbpress/
The first link is obviously the familiar look of forums in BP1.1, the second link is what the TestBP sites’ bbPress looks like without any taming or control. There are 11,100 groups on that site alone, most of which have test forums. If there was a general “New Topic” page (like http://testbp.org/bbpress/?new=1) you’ll see you just have a select drop down list of 10,000 forums to place your topic in, which isn’t really an effective way to categorize the discussions when displayed in that way.
I think when people adapt to this method of user/group/topic centric forums versus a top-down categorical list of forums, we’ll see some unique and interesting setups.

ParticipantJust upgraded to buddypress 1.1 beta and I can say that it is really great! With the 1 click integration with bbpress, it is really good! But 1 question, can I use this 1-click integration to create a site wide forum just like here in buddypress.org, wherein the forum is not just a collection of all forum posts from the different forums used in buddypress components (primarily in Groups). Hope you could help me out on how to do this. Thanks in advance!

KeymasterHi
Yeah, if you’ve installed from the .zip, you need to upload bbpress into place manually.

Participant@jeff, “Favorite Status: Add this topic to your favorites (?)” link. When you click on it it adds to your favorite. How do you manage it? You have to go to bbpress profile instead of the buddypress profile. I’m changed all my links trying not have the user go to bbpress profile because it’s confusing have two profile pages. I would like to be able to manage the favorites in the buddypress profile not bbpress.

ParticipantYou are talking about the saving of forum threads. This should be asked/suggested in the bbPress support forums. Even though bbPress is utilized by BuddyPress, it still is its own, separate plugin.

ParticipantYes, both testbp.org and BuddyPress.org use bbPress. You need to customize your bbPress theme. Search the forums here for “bbPress theme”.

As i said before the plugin intergration seems to be ok. You can see it in the groups but when you click “Post Topic” you get an error
“There was an error posting that topic” happens on all groups.

Participant@Jeff. That’s cool. I can just use a simple plug-in to block out groups, etc. wholesale. Like that code Burt did… just using is_user_logged_in(). It’ll do for now.
The issue is, I want to use BP as a kind of simple, lightweight “Intranet”/communication tool for our local Search & Rescue group. We’ll mostly use groups and/or bbPress to discuss fundraising, training, recent searches… etc. As well as look up members in the directory. Etc. All that stuff should be just for members. Some of it can be sensitive info. But we still need a public face for news, events and static info (faq, about, photos, etc.)
Two sites (a WordPress site for the public and a BuddyPress site for members) might make sense… but there’s overlap. All that public stuff needs to be available to members as well (pages, posts, events). So having two sites would be kind of a nightmare.
But I digress!!! As I say… I’m sure I can hack something together. Since I’m just hiding entire classes wholesale… it should be simple enough with a bit of PHP. Not sure how events will work though.
Anyway… very much looking forward to the privacy component as designed. Even thought it’s not what I thought it would be… and won’t do what I had in mind… it sounds like it’s actually a lot more impressive than that.

ParticipantInteresting question. I have not heard of an way to do this, but it should be possible with some behind the scenes coding.
Have you checked the WPMU or bbPress plugin repositories to see if such a plugin exists?

Jeff Sayre
ParticipantI had considered adding the ability to block a certain user or groups of users but then realized that the selections that are offered do in fact block groups of users by virtue of them not being able to view a given object. For example, if a particular user is bothering you, and they are not in your friends listing, you can make an object only viewable to friends. This, in essence, will block them.
Possibly future versions of the component could enable the grouping of several filter options or even include the ability to filter out certain users. But suffice it to say that the first version offers plenty of options and flexibility.
Since forums are not a core-created object but in fact are objects pulled into BuddyPress from an outside plugin, BPAz will not offer a filtering option for forums. There are simply too many distinct objects that bbPress creates. It truly needs its own privacy filtering system. Therefore, it is up to bbPress to offer such privacy options or a 3rd-party bbPress developer.

ParticipantJeff:
1. Which version of WPMU are you running?
2.8.4a
2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install?
directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory?
subdirectory (domain.com/designs/wpmu)
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WPMU? If so, from which version?
No I made a clean install
5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress?
Yes. Login was working fine. When I installed buddypress I couldnt login from the buddybar login. It looks for wp-admin.php in the root instead of in the directory “designs/wpmu/” where wp-admin.php is located.
6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running?
1.1 beta
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version?
No clean install
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?
Only Buddypress
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?
Standard that comes with buddypress
10. Have you modified the core files in any way?
No
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php?
No
12. If running bbPress, which version?
bbpress 1.0.2
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files.
When logging in from the buddybar it cant find wp-admin.php as its looking for the file in domain.com and not in the correct location which is domain.com/designs/wpmu where wp-admin.php is located.
When clicking login I get the message “No input file specified.”
I even tried making a clean install once again. Same problem with buddybar!

(not /plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/bbpress/ !)

Participanthello, hello… my forums are pointing me to a 404 page from the main nav as well as whenever i want to add a forum to my group. bp says that they are installed correctly in the forums setup. i hit the reinstall link twice and still got the “bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly” message but no luck. running the latest versions on everything — bp 1.1beta, wpmu 2.8.4a, bbpress 1.0.2. everything else is spot on though and works right out of the box. wpmu/bp is in the root with directory install. this was a fresh install for everything at michaelkuhlmann.com … no mods or additional plugins, just testing everything before i theme it.

ParticipantI was seeing the same errors as yourself. I solved it by placing the bbpress installation in buddypress/bp-forums and then running the one-click forums install. BuddyPress then creates a bp-config.php file in your WPMU root.
The key is having the bbpress installation in the bp-forums directory.
The 1.1 forums installation is light years ahead of the witch doctor moves you had to endure to get buddypress and bp-press to talk to each other.
